[Beanie Recs] Cast of Queen of Tears

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. We’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short.

Queen of Tears felt like such a ride and now I’m sad it’s over. Even if I wasn’t super-psyched on the final episodes, I loved it and was especially wowed by the cast. I know Kim Soo-hyun (of course!), but I had only seen Kim Ji-won in a couple of dramas before, and now I feel like maybe I need to watch more of her work. But the supporting cast was great too. Can you recommend other shows featuring the same actors?

Park Sung-hoon in Into the Ring (also sometimes called Memorials) is an absolute must-see, especially for those who might think of him only as a despicable villain. Not so here. Not so here. The whole drama itself is good from start to end.

Into the Ring is fabulous! PSH is perfectly paired with Nana here.

INTO THE RING is a classic must watch drama- maybe the best drama that Nana has ever done and PSH was part of why it was so good. It was actually a bit jarring to see him playing an ultimately irrational villain in QoT because in MEMORIALS (aka INTO THE RING) he was such a rational hero- the difference between the two roles is almost night and day: A real tribute to his talent and professionalism.

Agreed - after Into The Ring, it’s hard to see him as villain in Glory and QOT. He’s more than proved his lead credentials.

For Park Sung-Joon, it’s worthwhile to also check out Not Others in which he plays the no non-sense cop who is Soo-young’s fancy.

But my favorite romcom of his is the 2018 KBS drama special My Embarrassing Days with Jeon So-min. Really short and sweet!

I see that "Embarrassing Days" is currently on YouTube in the US, which is great--these drama specials can be hard to find!

Kim Ji-Won : What's Up, it was an ensemble cast but the drama was really good. In Lovestruck in the City and My Liberation Notes, she chose roles not easy to like but really interesting.

Park Sung-hoon : Into the Ring, I loved his haircut! The KBS drama special Review Notebook of My Embarrassing Days was really cute.

Kwak Dong-Yeon : Puberty Medley was a special drama with 4 four episodes, but I really liked it. He was great as a bodyguard in Love in the Moonlight, best haircut! Gaus Electronics was very funny but you need patience, the first 2 episodes are not the best ones.

What's Up 😍
KJW's extreme babytalk and weird babyish demeanor can be very off-putting in the beginning. But let it slide, and it get a lot better.

When first watching What’s Up, KJW’s baby talk takes time to adjust but back then, I would never have foreseen how MUCH she has travelled! She is a natural beauty without dispute if you check her out in What’s Up.

I kind of tolerated LITM for KDY. The wig just suited him so much and so far, it has been one of the best I’ve seen in a KD. That hairstyle made him even more soulful and somehow made him mysterious/inscrutable but still sympathetic.

My Love from the Star [Kim Soo-hyun]
From the same writer except infinately better, its also one of the most iconic K-dramas of all time and has spawned 8 million remakes and localisations since it aired in 2013.

Heirs [Kim Ji-won]:
Heirs is hot garbage but its trash TV at its finest, do not go in expecting anything good, but its entertaining and KJW is great despite the character being one-note

Perfect Marriage Revenge [Lee Mi-sook]
She was fabulous and i will never miss an opportunity to plug PMR

Yes, it is ironic that MY LOVE FROM THE STAR also ha the same writer as QoT as well as KSH as the male lead. It is one of the best K-dramas out there and anyone who has not seen it is missing out.

This may be an unpopular opinion. I always think MLFTS is a drama for which JJH is irreplaceable but not so for KSH’s character. He is however a MUST for QOT.

If you're aiming to rinse your Park Sung-hoon palate, I'll suggest you watch The Kidnapping Day and Not Others. Both are sweet supporting roles you'll love and wish you got more cause you'll beg for more.

Jung Jin-young: I have a lot to recommend. If you have the strength for 30+ episodes, catch him in Kingdom of the Wind. For 16 episode shows, watch My Unfamiliar Family. For an opposite of Daddy Hong, watch May It Please the Court.

Kwak Dong-yeon: Watch Vincenzo for a complete direct opposite of Hong Soo-cheol. You'll also get to see one of Daddy Hong's men following Hyun-woo around in the earlier episodes, Consigliere fanboy Im Chul-soo. And, watch Gaus Electronics to follow up on Hong Soo-cheol.

For Kim Ji-won, I've only seen her in My Liberation Notes. I'm sure it'll be mentioned by many beanies.

As for lady Moh, please watch Perfect Marriage Revenge to rinse your Lee Mi-sook palate. Feel free to add The Empire to your list to see more fabulously dressed quick thinking Lee Mi-sook. Don't worry, the intelligence remains a constant factor that's always on top.

For Kim Soo-hyun, I have but one recommendation: You From Another Star. That's the only piece I've seen him in save for QoT.

Yes, PSH is wonderful in The Kidnapping Day. He’s fit as glove as a good cop, just like in Not Others.

Agreed Vincenzo for KDY. Likewise, My Unfamiliar Family for JJY who is underutilized in QOT.

I’m a fan of Lee Mi-sok who plays evil woman like nobody business from the movie Untold Scandal to My Name is Lee Shi-shin as IU’s mom - but she is the real lead in Money Flower with chill-down-the-spine portrayal that stays with you for a long time.

For Park Sung-hoon The Kidnapping Day
And for Kim Ji-won My Liberation Notes Descendants of The Sun Fight For My Way
Kwak Dong-yeon Vincenzo Moonlight Drawn by Clouds Big Mouse

KJW's secondary pairing in "Descendants of the Sun" is the best part of that drama to my mind. She's also very likeable in "Fight My Way" and impressive in "Liberation Notes." "Lovestruck in the City" is a bit of a slog, but she does good work in it. It strikes me that overall, she always has great chemistry with her co-stars, no matter the quality of the drama.

I know you weren't looking for recs for him, but my favorite KSH performance remains "It's Ok Not to Be Ok." He does everything in this one and yet still manages to be a very swoony romantic lead. I especially appreciate his portrayal here because his character is flawed and makes mistakes throughout; he can also sometimes be aloof and emotionally shut-off. And yet, by the end, I found him so endearing and perfectly paired with the FL.

I loved Park Sung-hoon in "Not Others," but I don't think he got enough screentime to make up for the other things that didn't work in that drama. He's also great in "Into the Ring."

Kwak Dong-Yeon is excellent in "Vincenzo" and "Gaus Electronics." He's also hot in "Love in the Moonlight" even though he doesn't have a loveline in that one.

100% second "It's Ok to Not Be Ok" -- one of my most favorite k-dramas. It's incredibly unique. Bonus that Kwak Dong Yeon is also in the cast!

Watch KDW in "my husband got a family" a supporting character but so impressive and funny.
And watch the crazy aunt in "a gentleman's dignity" and grandpa's wife in " money flower" and " greasy melo"

Kim Ji Won is excellent in Fight My Way.
Park Sung-hoon is a must see in beanie favourite Into The Ring.
Kwak Dong-yeon is great in everything, but Vincenzo and Gaus Electronics are my favourites. Two very different characters as well.

Kim Ji Won: My Liberation Notes, Fight For My Way and Heirs (but I recommend just watch clips of her in character as Rachel)

Park Sung Hoon: The Glory, Kidnapping Day and Not Others

Kwak Dong Yeon: Gaus Electronics, Love In the Moonlight and Vincenzo. But also watch his cameos in Fight for My Way, Its Okay To Not Be Okayy and Our Beloved Summer

Lee Mi Sook: Perfect Marriage Revenge

Kim Soo Hyun: Its Okay To Not Be Okay

Everyone's already recommended most of the shows I was thinking of. Only one I think not mentioned yet is Park Sung-hoon in Psychopath Diary. Another of his fantastic villainous turns.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Kwak Dong Yeon’s heartbreaking turn as the tortured villain in My Strange Hero. I’ve never empathized with an antagonist more. QoT could have learned a lesson from his performance in creating a more nuanced version of Eun Seong.

I'm currently watching Jealously Incarnate which has both Park Sung Hoon (a small part as it's one of his early roles) and Lee Mi Sook.

PSH in the small but noticeable role of both following and arguing with his boss (Go Kyung-Po) is funny and very different from all other roles mentioned in this thread. It is the kind of performance worth checking out of someone coming a long way.

Watch marriage not dating where the grandfather in qot plays a cheating husband. I love KSH in all his dramas and people here have not mentioned moon engraving the sun where he plays a lovelorn king if you are into historical dramas

My first Kim Ji Won drama was the classic Descendants of the Sun but I really loved her in Fight For My Way.
Whoever decided to cast her and Park Seo-Jun together needs a raise stat!

Kwak Dong Yeon, basically his whole filmography. He's such a versatile actor, from Its Okay to Not Be Okay to Vincenzo. Not to mention he was phenomenal as the bodyguard in Love In The Moonlight. When I found out it was him, I couldn't believe it at first! He was SO different! He definitely excels in comedy though!
He was a great cameo in Fight For My Way (Yes he acted with Jiwon too! Talk about foreshadowing!)
He was alright in Big Mouth although it wasn't his best roles.

This probably does not count as its a promotional video for QoT with PSH, KSH, KJW. But I enjoyed it, they talk about some cool things like restaurants and sport. I don't look for/watch promo videos generally, but the ones I have seen before tend to be silly games, not actual conversation. (link in comments)
