Lee Je-hoon to fight for Korean independence in Lee Jun-ik’s next film

Lee Je-hoon (Phantom Detective, Signal) has been cast in Park Yeol, the twelfth and latest film by acclaimed filmmaker Lee Jun-ik, who has an impressive filmography that includes award-winning Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet, Sado, and The King and the Clown, among other notable works.

Lee Je-hoon will take on the titular role of Park Yeol, the founder of the anarchist group called “Heukdohwe” and leader of the Korean independence movement during Japanese-occupied Korea. Dissidents of Japanese imperialism were referred to as “unruly Koreans,” and Park Yeol wore that badge proudly, satirizing the term and self-describing himself as a “troublemaker.” A real-life historical figure, Park Yeol was a bold and eloquent dissident who confronted Japanese oppression head-on and plotted to assassinate Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito.

Director Lee Jun-ik aims to make a moving and truthful historical film with lingering imagery and without exaggeration. His most recent film Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet starring Kang Haneul and Park Jung-min also took place during the occupation, so he’s already well-versed in representing this dark and tumultuous period in Korean history.

He described Lee Je-hoon as an inextinguishable fireball of an actor, and Lee Je-hoon stated that he’s always wanted to work with the director and feels honored to depict the life of someone who lived through such a painful era. As a fan of both Lee Jun-ik’s films and Lee Je-hoon, I am so onboard with this. I like that Lee Je-hoon continues to take on a variety of roles, changing it up and expanding his range. And I enjoyed Lee Jun-ik’s Sado despite bawling my eyes out. Now I’ll be adding Park Yeol to my list of things to look forward to in 2017!

Production on Park Yeol will commence in January 2017.

Get your mojo back Lee Je-hoon! Back to Chungmuro with a good director should do it.
Sounds like a perfect role for him and I love director Lee Jun-ik. He does a lot of research first. If Park Yeol was still alive he would hunt him down for every little details.

Plus, are there any good recommendations for shows set in the Japenese occupation era? I think they are way lesser than sageuks.

Bridal Mask/Gaksital is the only one I can think of, but it's a good one!

Kissasian has Dongju with eng sub available. I haven't checked if the sub is good though.

Very interesting read on CIA website. A full TV drama should do more justice for this type of subject. Two hours is simple not enough.

I may be the only one who thought Lee Je Hoon was the weakest link in Signal. I know there's a ton of fans here so please don't hate me but there's always something about his acting that leaves me wanting more and not in a good way. There's a certain lack of depth I felt with his character all through Signal, where some moment felt like overacting?

Anyway, I really hope to see him honing in those skills because the man is definitely adorable.

I liked him in Signal, but Cho Jin-Woong and Kim Hye-Soo were definitely the more experienced and exceptional sunbaes.

Bleak Night is still his strongest work; he was amazing in it.

The first time I saw Jehoon in Signal, I said, "Ehhh, he's not cute."

But omg his looks so grew on me and now I'm so obsessed and I've read like all his interviews and he acknowledges he's only doing variety shows doing promotions more recently because he knows he's not a funny person and gets very serious easily and he was so honest about it and acknowledged that Fashion King was challenging for him and while he knows it's not his best he learned a lot about drama filming from it and you can tell he's really serious about his acting ahhhhh

Anyway he is now my bias
