Drama viewership ratings for the week of Nov. 14-20, 2016

This was a premiere-heavy week if ever there was one, with three brand new shows starting their runs in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. But far from being a tight race, it was one clearly dominated by the much anticipated blockbuster drama Legend of the Blue Sea, which netted an impressive 16.4% for its first episode. It dropped a point for its second though, leaving it at 15.1%, but no one should be surprised if those numbers skyrocket by next week.

It works that the other two shows running against it are smaller, simpler shows, with underdog Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju bringing up the rear at a low 3.3%, and the adorably sad Oh My Geum-bi taking second with an impressive 6.5%, all things considered. It’ll be interesting to see how the numbers shake out as all three shows get to their feet, but it doesn’t seem like we’ll be seeing any major upsets for a while.

There weren’t any surprises for the weekend shows, except that poor Our Gap-soon keeps getting shifted around and/or pre-empted based on the week. It’s not hurting its ratings much, at least, and the show is holding steady against family juggernaut Laurel Tree Tailors. And over on cable, This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair is seeing a justifiable slow rise in numbers, while Entourage looks doomed to live in the land below 1% for the near future. (People can’t stay awake for seventy-five minutes! Trim your episode length, guys!)

Happy to see that This Week My Wife Will Have an Affair's rating is doing well. Both writing and acting are brilliant and I'm happy I am watching this show.

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim is also doing well. Cannot wait to see Night Light starting next week and maybe to shake up the rating? . ? Weightlifting Fairy also enjoyable to watch although I still have some issue with NJH's acting., Anyway hope the rating will be able to reach at least 5%.

Happy too see Our Gabsoon's rating as well. Probably it is a good strategy by SBS to air it back-to-back on Saturday. The story has become more interesting and love that Gabsoon has finally realized what is important for her ? Gabdol is still remain unlikeable although he is now wearing suits and I don't mind if they don't end up together at the end. Hope the rating can maintain two digits next week onwards. This drama has become my favourite weekend drama at the moment. ;)

With their sudden rise in ratings, I hope that JTBC will increase their drama production next year. JTBC may have reduced their drama budget, but they did not lose their superior production values. :)

Whose bright idea was it to have 75min episodes in the last time slot ?. If you want Entourage to pick up, adding more minutes to the show won't help it's cause. On the other hand I'm happy that MWIHAATW is steady, probably the least expected weekend drama ended up catching people by surprise.
I'm here for Oh My Geum-bi, it's amazing that a little girl has out performed everyone in her own drama and her rivals in the same timeslot too.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju is the real under-dog for its slot and the heavy competition... Being a sports-person myself, I've watched its first two episodes and enjoyed them too much... while I'm yet to watch LOBS, Geum-Bi seems to be a tear-jerker and so sceptical on whether to watch it or not...

HeadsNo2, do you hate 'This Week' and 'Our Gab Soon'? Why you always said like that '2 dramas have terrible rating'.
This Week break highest rating record of jTBC dramas 2016.
And Our Gab Soon take second place of weekend dramas, the things never happens in 4 years! (4 years! It's really long so you need to talk about it. You always talk like "no suprise" "nothing special"..

As for Gabsoon, I am happy it is doing well. It is competing against Blow Breeze (same time slot) and for epi 25 if im not mistaken it doesn't competing with any drama. Overall it is doing well, wish it can continue to rise.

It's just so hard for a little show like that to compete against the Goliath that is Goblin.

Hi! I'm not that worried about Goblin's premiere. Goblin may air 30 minutes earlier than JTBC's My wife is having an affair this Week. However, JTBC Drama's pre-programming is their main news program, which is doing way better since JTBC had exposed their president's political scandal. I think that most people will stay for My Wife is having an affair this Week's Finale after the news, and this will not weaken their ratings, albeit Goblin's premier.

Moon Lovers can't really be considered as a flop.

Even though viewership ratings of people who watched on TV sets in Korea were not good, they improved during the 2nd half and ended with 11.3%. Despite the low TV viewership ratings, Moon Lovers topped Content Power Index in Korea several times during its run, reflecting its "popularity" and interest.

The drama also sold for a high price to China, and was also sold & broadcasted in other countries in Asia, and achieved high viewership ratings overseas.

I guess it just didnt do as well as expected like a 20%? Yea u could say its partly due to MDBC.. MDBC was done well.. Scarlet heart was not only outshone because the other show done well, but it had its own problem that led to the poor rating..

Looking at its predecessor doctor and successor dr romantic for the same time slots (maybe korean have a love or thing for doctor genre show), moon lovers rating is pretty mediocre considering its huge expenditure.. And i believe most would agree with the editing problems and story flaws.. it manage to end on a higher note due to MDBC ended.. anyway that number is pretty normal now that we look at it, since dr romantic that took over the slots competing with the same drama aired already manage to get higher rating than the average of scarlet heart since ep1 and totally win the highest rating of scarlet heart from ep2/3 onwards

Entourage is sold for even higher price than scarlet heart.. Price doesnt really reflect the quality of the drama.. It could be due to the casting and popularity or hype of the drama.. high virewership is really subjective.. 2bilion views in china is really nothing, if u compare this with their domestic population and show.. yes, it could be a lot for korean show and maybe this broke record, but this show license is bought from china bu bu jing xin.. this might be due to why the china are paying more attention to it..

From Wikipedia: "Despite its ensemble cast, extensive publicity and US$13 million production budget, the series only averaged single-digit audience rating of 7.59% in South Korea and received criticism for its directing and acting. A commercial failure domestically, it drew a more favorable response in other parts Asia."

Basically, a flop.

I hope I'm not mistaken but weren't Goblin and LOBS supposed to be pre produced? I don't think they are anymore. And now it is better for them that they aren't because after seeing Entourage's ratings people would've been massively put off by the pre production concept, though I still think that the failure of a show has to do with the content and not that its pre produced or not but I guess that was on of te reasons why people didn't even tune into watch ML.

Required fields are marked *

I honestly think pre-produced stigma getting bad stigma is more because of moon lovers rather than moon lovers being the victim.
they start at 8%,
people don't put off by the pre production, moon lover have actors people not interest (as example JJH, Gong Yoo or Lee Min Ho), they had lee junki but he is the only one,
combined with bad acting, bad plot and messy starts, Moon lovers is a mess as their own,

other pre produced drama is web series, 1% of anything, uncontrollably fond which is accepted well enough, at least have decent rating,

goblin and lobts is half pre-produced as any kdrama as usual but that is NOT why they probably became popular,
tired with this moon lover is victim,
if they had a good story it makes sense, but when they doesn't ...

0
12
reply

Required fields are marked *

+1 on moon lovers..

not that they didn't have a story.. but the fact is that a lot of departments in that drama did not do their job, acting is least to blame given grave errors of other departments..

And although i loved the show.. OLY for LJK.. i am very very very happy that ratings faltered.. because bad work should not be encouraged... specially not over those who take their craft seriously..

And i do hope that wed-thus ratings even out between the three.. because LOTBS is no great drama..had ample flaws.. JJY's antics trying to be the main pullin force...and its just sad when poor product overall gets undue advantage just because it has more money to hire better models to promote it

UF don't have a good ratings. It's a flop which wasting 1 billion won to produced.

0

Required fields are marked *

The first of the pre-produced dramas to falter was actually UF, it did all right on its initial ratings but the ratings dropped like a stone once W came along and it couldn't even struggle back up into double digits on a day when W pre-empted an episode.

So when Moon Lovers came along and had an underwhelming initial episode, the scepticism about pre-produced always being better was already in place (and it still managed to get itself into double digits in the final week).

At times it's not production fault. At times The fault is in korean audience the quality is falter and falter. I think pre produced drama became A mess because they re edit it like CITt to what they want. God fyckin hate those netizen and media play.

It was based on a great novel. How would LJK know that the post-production i.e. editing, music etc. was going to be bad?

I think the cinematography, costumes & fighting scenes were great.

0

......why blame the audience, though?

Cheese in the Trap was a horrible, piano-addled mess BEFORE the netizens began complaining. Same with SH's first two episodes. This attempt to push the narrative of "horrible netizens, how dare they complain about dramas on their airwaves!" completely ignores the fact that in every one of these cases, the drama had issues well before Korean viewers started complaining.

I disagree that pre-produced dramas getting bad stigma is because of Moon Lovers. They started at 7.4%, which shows that Korean viewers were not interested right from the start, for whatever reasons. Compare this to DOTS and UF which started at 14.3% and 12.5% respectively.

UF started well enough, but dropped to single digit ratings after Ep 6, did not recover and ended with 8.4%. On the other hand, Moon Lovers started low at 7.4% and climbed up to end at 11.3%.

Imo, whether viewers are interested in a drama is dependent on content, and not whether a drama is pre-produced or not. I doubt if the general Korean TV drama viewer even knows or cares whether a drama is pre-produced or not.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree that content is what counts. Being a viewer, isn't what most important is that you enjoyed the drama?

With regards to Moon Lovers, I think the fact that everyone knew that it was going to be a tragedy played a big factor in the lack of initial interest. Like the original drama aired in South Korea if I'm not mistaken and the novels were a best seller, that's why a remake/adaptation was put into works, so I'm pretty sure the overall plot is quite well-known. I'm not from South Korea and am not an expert on this, but from what I have observed so far, the general South Korean audience does seem to prefer light-hearted comedies, and more particularly romcoms, and endings where the leads don't end up together are simply unacceptable, so I think the plot overall is quite off putting already. But no point crying over spilled milk, only thing I've learned from watching ML, is that I am boycotting Kim Kyu Tae's works from now on, at least until he learns how to frame properly.

These days I tune into new dramas just because they're new lol, it has more to do with the lack of stories in dramas that people opt out of the old ones easily may be. I'm surprised at the ratings for Man living in my house, it started with higher numbers that what it currently has.
SBS has taken the top spot from KBS with both weekday timeslots doing pretty well.

I hope for higher ratings for Oh my Geum-bi, even if it is almost impossible to beat LOTBS, at least 9-10% ratings won't hurt.

Ouch at Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Ju and Entourage's ratings, which happens to be two of the three shows I'm watching.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Ju is seriously adorable, but I don't see it faring any better with star power Legend of the Blue Sea as its competition. Lee Jong Suk's cameo was love. "You look like a manhwa character."

Entourage honestly makes me bitter at how pretty people always get what they want. Movie debut predicted to flop? Box office hit. Not cast for a blockbuster? Director suddenly changes his mind. Rejected twice by the girl of his dreams? She liked him back all along.

Gap-soon is actually doing remarkably well! Its 24th and 25th episodes are the first to beat MBC's weekend dramas since My Love, Madame Butterfly in 2013 (for the 8:45 p.m. slot) and Angel Eyes in 2014 (for the 10:00 p.m. slot).

Praying hard it will stay 2 digit next week onwards. The show started become interesting compared to earlier episodes, and I'm happy to see the number of ratings. It is family drama and I'm sure it can steal ahjumma's hearts little by little. We have half way to go, who knows it can reach 20%? ;)

Hope it. This writer will make more things happen before it ends. At least it will reach 15%.

I could be totally off base, but I don't really expect LoBS to explode in the ratings anytime soon. I know it'll be a hit, but probably not like DoTS, but more Doctors/Moonlight. The reviews just aren't too promising so far, while other dramas in the timeslot are getting better word of mouth. I doubt it's in any danger of getting anything below 15% though, but I could really see Oh My Geum Bi being a sleeper hit here. The plot of LoBS will really have to kick into high gear soon or grab the audience in some way. While I found it fun so far, it's just missing something the will make it the next super hit imo.

The thing about Doctors and MDBC is that they were 'underdogs', as they were not as highly promoted and not nearly as high-budgeted as LOTBS and literally no one expected them to be the big summer/autumn hits.
The initial ratings of LOTBS were expected to be in the teens, otherwise it would have been a commercial flop, especially given the fact that high-profile names and production team were attached to it. SBS is probably expecting it get higher ratings...
I love my queen Jun Ji Hyun though, there is something about her aura...

Totally true. Both those dramas came out of nowhere. LoBS ratings are really good, but expectations are much higher for it. I'd guess SBS would like a repeat of YFAS ratings for LoBS at the very least. And I love JJH, but right now I feel LoBS is relying on star power and not writing and it's not doing a great job pulling the audience in (it is, but not to explode in the ratings). I could be totally wrong, though, and episode 3 could break 20% and it could go on to be the biggest hit of the year lol. It's too early to tell. Episode 3 is usually when you can tell how a drama will do in the ratings.

Agreed. Although I love JJH and like LMH, I gotta admit that it's all just visuals and star power right now.

It's only week 1 anyway......DOTS started w/ similar ratings % then blew up....LOTBS could so the same.

The ratings didn't fall for DoTS and other shows though and they had better reviews and fewer complaints from the beginning. Well, we'll see in episode 3 anyway. Too early to write it off as a monster hit anyway.

Yea too early.. Hard to tell.. Let's see if more would tune in next week or what..

I went back to look at DOTS rating, it sort of went explosive mode and almost doubled in ep3 and continue rising thereafter (i really wonder where all these viewers come from suddenly.. like out of nowhere sudden emerge from their cave? ok its a joke hehe)

Kpop dance sadly won't happen considering they only have one more week before the final week of episodes, when Goblin premieres. But they have got to feel good that it has been pretty well received so far with steady climb in ratings over the past weeks. Personally I am glad that the story has maintained its tension even when D-day happened in episode 3.

Not surprised by Legend's strong start. Expecting this one to hold the top spot during its run. Sad to see Weightlifting getting so little love. But I'm enjoying both shows and plan to watch till the end.

Was gonna start Entourage sometime, but I think my interest has waned given the reviews so far and the episode length. Will probably just watch the above two K-dramas for now amidst a C-drama.

If we are talking about ratings then it is a flop. They are lucky it was pre produced and sold before anyone saw the final product.

Oh My Geum Bi looks good, but it also sounds so damn depressing.

Legend of the Blue Sea and Weightlifting Fairy are so much more comedic and fun so I will likely not be tuning into Oh My Geum Bi for the foreseeable future, but I am happy it rose in episode two.

Also, Entourage may be a domestic failure but it sold so well internationally that I think tvN are content with how its doing.

But I do agree, smaller episode lengths would help a lot. Trimming the runtime likely wouldn't hurt too much either because it already feels fairly stretched out as it is. I do enjoy the show though.

What is the depressing thing about oh my geum bi? i dont know if she is gonna be sick in the future or not, but for now its a hopeful story. A little girl find love. Many people went through hardship in life, thats where they start, not where they went. That little girl didnt choose her life that way, she didnt choose to have mom and dad like that. But she fight through all. She is still a nice, intelligent, caring, loving girl. And she is still a cute little 9 years old kid. There are many ways she could give up her life to be bad, but she choose to stay with her dad no matter what, caring about him, stand up to him, doesnt do bad thing like him. Its the drama about love between family member. You gonna fight but you stay together through hard time.

Wishful thinking: if oh my geum bi get 10%, our lee young and raon ie can make a cameo plsssssssssssss

As viewer who avoid any heavy or depressing drama after Scarlet Heart, I am kinda sad that "The Man That Living in Our House" gets lowest rating among its rivals. It is one of two dramas that I am watching right now (the other one is 1% of Something). Regardless the plot, I really love Kim Youngkwang and SooAe's relationship. Everyone is funny here. I even can't wait for the growth of sibling relationship between that lawyer guy and his sister. They look like real siblings, they fight, they scream at each other etc but in the end they support each other. Eventhough they have hidden motive as well.

When a show dropped in ratings, it only boils down to one thing. Something wrong with the story. This show has quite a lot of attention from the start but the Scriptwriter is simply too naggy. Dragging the story too much. I read that they are trying to improve the story and making it more exciting. This is the plus point of real life filming. But the ones who suffer are the actors and the crew, with very little time to rest. I also love the OTP. Very nice and beautiful. Otherwise, I would drop the showing time ago.

I'm so happy for Our Gap-soon T_T At first this drama wasn't convincing me, but now I've grown fond of all its characters. Yes, a couple of them and the storyline can be unpleasant sometimes, but it's depicting life and not everything in life is pleasant and happy. I've yet to watch episode 25, but I loved episode 24. It brought tears to my eyes. I felt bad for Cho-rong and Da-rong for having such a mother, and proud of Gap-soon who's taking control of her life. In her words I've heard what I've thought sometimes as well...

"if I don't become something, nobody in the world will love me. Men for sure... and even parents and siblings look down on you. At my age, it's hard to find jobs and I don't want to work part time. I'm going to have my own business. My first dream is to be self-sufficient. "Dream" sounds like a sweet word. We say "dreams" but they're occupations. Are dreams about having good jobs and having a better life than others? It's my life so I'll take charge. You're my family. Don't look at me like I'm a failure. I haven't failed. I once dreamt of being a teacher but it didn't work out. I'm going to stand up so that nobody can mock me."
(sorry for the long quote)

Agree episode 24 was really good, the last 5 minutes too, finally there is some development in Gap soon's character. It should have gotten to this point much earlier like 10 episodes ago. Would have been a lot more interesting watching Gap soon's struggle with starting a new business. Didn't think they would go there with Gap soon's parents in episode 25. The scene with Gap soon's mother in episode 25 clocked in the highest rating so far ~16%.

Yes, the last five minutes were really, really good too. And so... I'm gonna put the quote from that scene as well! This is what Gap-soon says to Gap-dol:

"I didn't say I'd marry you. I'm not going to depend on men. At times, I did want to get married and stay at home. But I know how foolish that is now. I'm going to work. I'm going to stand up so that nobody can mock me. I'm going to become independent... and I'll choose to get married."

I hope ratings rise. The series deserves it, if it stays like this.

It's weird to see JBTC having much higher numbers than tvN. Good for the wife that's having an affair this week! I'm about to finally start watching it, hoping for the best. The Man Living in our House on the hand is very sad. Ah well.

JTBC is on a roll this year! They have really good dramas this year and I'm quite surprising myself too, because I dropped a lot of tvN dramas this year (K2, Entourage, Cinderella) and replaced it with the ones from JTBC (Age of Youth, Fantastic, My Wife is Having an Affair).

I have always felt like ratings isn't that big of a deal, I'm happy if a drama I love does well, and I don't really care that much if it doesn't. But for Weightlifting Fairy, I am genuinely concerned that if the ratings continue to be like this, it might get cancelled early, but I like to think MBC has more integrity than that.
