The otherworldly couples of The Lonely Shining Goblin

We’ve got more stills from tvN’s upcoming fantasy romance The Lonely Shining Goblin, this time featuring our two main couples plus Yook Sung-jae (Village: Secret of Achiara) all by his lonesome, but holding his own.

The couple at the center of the story: Gong Yoo (Big), who plays the titular goblin who can only end his immortality by finding himself a human bride, and Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap), who plays a nineteen-year-old with the fate of someone who should’ve died, claiming to be the bride the goblin needs. From birth, she was anything but ordinary, but she longs to be a normal, test-taking high school student.

Their photos were taken against the autumn backdrop in Quebec. Kim Go-eun looks like a happy, fresh-faced youth next to a stoic, suit-clad Gong Yoo.

The other couple: Lee Dong-wook (Bubblegum) plays an amnesiac reaper and the goblin’s unlikely roommate, one-half of a bizarre roommate scenario. Yoo Inna (One More Happy Ending) plays a chicken shop owner who figured out early on that the most comfortable way of living as a woman is to live thoughtlessly.

Their photos were taken on a footbridge in Korea and have a decidedly different tone than the Quebec shots. They gaze at each other intently, and the mood seems rather serious.

Last but not least, we have Yook Sung-jae’s solo shots as the chaebol heir whose family has been taking care of the goblin for generations. I think the way he’s dressed comes across as more mountain villager than chaebol heir, but I’m sure there’s a reason for that.

I’m about ready for this drama to make its bow. It appears there won’t be a love triangle in the Goblin, which is nice; I figure writer Kim Eun-sook learned that two distinct couples can work just as well if not better after the smash success of her Descended From the Sun. May the odds be in the Goblin’s favor because I really want this drama to be great!

Friday-Saturday drama The Lonely Shining Goblin will premiere on December 2 on tvN.

You said it, chickachunga! I'd consider live-watching this show if it wasn't for my intermittent net connection over the next few months. Boo hoo hoo! Gong Yoo and the lack of a love triangle already sounds so tempting... *cries*

First time I like female lead for Wookie. Normally I'm getting used to his co-star or starting to like her while watching the drama. But here I really like Yoo In Na from her previous works I've watched. Thank you, Dramabeans for your updates! A bit more then 2 weeks! Fighting, Goblin!

She's Lee Da Hae :))) Lee Da Hee it's another actress. I liked her in Hotel King, but not in My Girl (not my type of female character), but I was talking that I used to become liking his co-stars while watching drama, cos before I didn't know them. As for Yoo In Na, I know her dramas and I like her from "Queen In Hyun's man" and "One more happy ending".^^ That means I'm already appreciating both from couple, no need to watch drama lol

I don't think Kiara is mixing up Lee Dae Hee and Yoo In Na.

I think she thought you were saying that you didn't like his costars at all even after watching the drama, and she was asking if you did not like Lee Dae Hee with him in My Girl. But you just meant that you didn't like the actresses until you watched the drama. And this is the first time that you already like the actress before the drama starts. Is that right?

I know she Kiara is not mixing LDH and YIN. She has miss spelled Lee Da Hae's name. There are 2 actresses: Lee Da Hee and Lee Da Hae. The one in HK and MG was Lee Da Hae. And I was not meaning I didn't like them before drama. I was meaning I didn't know them at all before dramas. And in case with YIN I know her and already like.

I still thinking LDH's best works in My Girl. Hope she finds her way back to kdrama. Since she already reunite with LDW in Hotel King, maybe next time reunite with LJK in a good romcom drama. My Girl still remains as one of the best romcom that i've ever watched considering that I am not so into romcom.

@samoa please don't start an unnecessary fan war. If you read princi's comment again as well as her comments in response to @Kiara's post, she has clarified that she meant that YIN's the first lead she's known and liked before the airing of LDW's dramas. Nowhere did she say that she has anything against LDH. In fact, she has said that the HK is one of her fave dramas and she also likes the chamo pairing. I think it's perfectly fine for us to have our own preferences with regards to actors or actresses as long as we are respectful, which she has been.

I've read somewhere that both couples will have different chemistry. I guess Grim Reaper and Sunny will be in charge of more mature romance with funny and hot moments.

Even the third leads are cute.
Yoo Inna - Kim Sung oh (Secret Garden)
Yoon Jinyi - Kim Minjong (A Gentleman's Dignity)
Krystal Jung - Kang Minhyuk, Kang Haneul - his teacher (forgot her name), Kang Haneul - Kim Jiwon, Minhyuk's dad - Jiwon's mom (The Heirs). Basically I like everyone in The Heirs but the story is just meh. I even love the frenemies relationship between Park Shinhye and Krystal, it's so hillarious.
Except Descendents of the Sun, I love the lead to the bone eventhough it's not my fave drama.
I expected to love second lead couple but ended up kinda dissappointed after seeing Kim Jiwon's character. She harrased almost everyone there.

From her styling to her walk and overall demeanor in these stills, Kim Go-eun looks a bit too much like a little kid. I can see it being an issue if this is the vibe they give off throughout the drama.

And Gong yoo is in a suit looking older. I am sorry but I have her dad vibe coming across. Like he is going for a PTA meeting.

And I will be watching it. Except KSE is so youthful looking anyway. And GY has always been manly handsome.

Oh yeah, he definitely looks like her father here. It's so creepy.

It really doesn't help the ick factor when your female lead is a high schooler who totally has the demeanor and appearance of a schoolgirl, and then put your male lead who has always looked older in a suit.

Maybe the drama will prove me wrong, but from the last teaser it seems like KGE is even putting on a bit of a voice to sound younger. It seems creepy to me!

I'll probably end up watching at least the first episode anyway, though.

I wonder if KES' writing style will translate well to tvN?

but then tvN has been making itself over into Big-3-lite for the last year now.

Required fields are marked *

But isn't it more about ratings now? I think they are hiring big names to get them big numbers (as in ratings) now. Recent example is K2 where quality was sacrificed in order to get the show written by someone who as an award winning writer and his previous show was a hit.

If I ignore that this drama's writer is KES, the premise of the show intrigues me and I would've definitely watched it but taking that into consideration I hope tvN has toned down her cheesy style a bit, though again that is what brings the numbers.

0

Glad I'm not the only one who feels that from tvN. KES isn't going to change, tvN will accommodate her style is my guess.

I think i can guess why KGE's character has the fate of someone who should've died. You just KNOW she's a past lover of centuries ago who has reincarnated to present day.

Lee Dong Wook and his soulful eyes. If I ever dream abou a Korean actor( well aside from the usual daydreams and fantasies), it'd be about LDW staring soulfuly at me, as he laments our love that can never be. Before he then, looses himself and pulls me into a passionate embrace and an intense make-...i'll stop here, lol

Yook Sun Jae looks more like a young martial arts teacher who runs a chicken and buns shop on the DL.

Now Dear Isolated, Sparkly Goblin, hurry the sh!t up! Not that I was waiting or anything.

I really hope you're right about Ji Eun-tak being a reincarnation of Kim Shin's past lover because then I can see Kim Go-eun in beautiful historical garb! ?? But like someone mentioned below, I don't think that's likely since it's not in her character description that she's a character from the past... anyways, I know I've been waiting too long for this drama, so yes, PALI PALI JUSEYO! ??????

I always end up loving the second lead couple's story more waaaay more than the leads in KES's dramas. Even in SeGa despite Hyun Bin and Ha Ji-won's insane chemistry. And after DOTS where I practically fast forwarded almost all of the whole main couple's story, I think it'll be the same here. Lee Dong-wook and Yoo In-na looks great together already.

"she was anything but ordinary"

Could she be someone who is 19 but "spiritually", she's actually old? I'm just trying to make sense of Kim Go-eun's character being a high school student. She seems special. She wants to be a normal student and she also knows that she's the key to ending the Goblin's immortality. Maybe there's more to her character than we know. The character descriptions have been vague so far, so I'm hoping the show will surprise us.

I'm trying to make sense out of it too. Is she even human? We have a goblin and a reaper. She has some kind of special ability to see supernatural beings or something like that.
Then we have a second lead who probably murders chicken for her soup restaurant. Can we just go all out supernatural here and forget about the age thing lol.

For me one of the positives in DOTS was a dual couple and technically no love lines crosed with main couple. Each couple had their story and charm. I truly hope its the same case for goblin. I also miss Yoo In Na. Hope her storyline with LDW is engaging n interesting on its own.
Im also looking forward to see golblin and reaper's interaction.

Can I just say how gorgeous the set looks with the bright vivid colours? the PD definitely knows how to bring in the pretty, and how to showcase the beautiful cast! kim go eun looks so lovely :)

i know quite a few people who are turned off over the whole high school girl dynamic, particularly with Kim Go Eun playing it particularly young and girlish (from the teasers) and gong yoo very much looking like a man in his 30s (albeit a very very good looking one!)

it could be that there will be a time jump into the future , or the show wants to display her coming of age into a matured young woman (hence her playing it particularly young and fresh in the first episode to provide a contrast to her maturity later on). I have hopes it will tone down in the future!

the goblin is quite a departure from gong yoo 's usual drama characters (young, boyish and playful) - he has finally stopped chasing noonas and is playing the more adult one in a relationship! maybe that's why I am having slight difficulties envisioning the dynamics and chemistry between him and kim go eun - it will be quite interesting to see how he tackles this one!

I don't know what to expect but one thing gong yoo has never lacked in is his chemistry with his female leads. kim go eun seems to be really talented as well! looking forward to see how their relationship unfolds.

also the grim reaper has the most soulful eyes outside a basset hound I have ever seen. he looks so adorable! his amnesia will only heighten his lost puppy appeal haha!

Please, Kim Eunsook, don't make Goblin another-superrrcheesy-romance.
