Dramabeans Podcast #37

We’re almost done catching up (and it only took three podcasts to do it)! We actually recorded this podcast two weeks ago, though in the chaos of the site switch-over, it took a little while for us to get it ready for you all. Luckily (?) we’re still behind on old dramas, so the extra delay doesn’t really affect any of the discussions going on about the current shows. Yay?

Podcast #37

Running time: 1:17:53

Topics and dramas discussed:

  • Intro, when we discuss the new site, which at the point of this recording was still in the future
  • Jealousy Incarnate (4:19): We’d talked about this in a previous podcast,
but only briefly, so came back to revisit it
  • This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair (15:14): And all the things we loved about it
  • Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim (25:57): The quirky initial setup, the wacky hospital characters, the medical narratives, and the sizzling chemistry between Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin
  • Entourage (37:58): And everything that went wrong with it (there were so many things!)
  • After the Show Ends (51:20): Veering off to talk about variety shows, we stop to look at this experimental hybrid reality-drama format
  • Three Meals a Day (1:00:22): The latest season, with Eric, Yoon Kyun-sang, and Yoon Kyun-sang’s cats
  • Newlywed Diary (1:08:04): And capping off with yet another of Na PD’s new shows, featuring newlywed actor couple Ahn Jae-hyun and Gu Hye-sun

I liked After the Show Ends, despite how experimental and not perfect it was.

And congrats on the new site. It's going really smoothly and the glitches WERE minimal. :)

I was laughing throughout the section about Na Pd. His genius is such that even listening to both of you talking about his shows makes it funny.

Honestly, I'm so proud of you guys. I'm just really grateful and impressed that you went back and covered everything. Even revisiting my favorite show again, Jealousy Incarnate! Between the year-end reviews, all the 10-year anniversary features, and the new site, I never expected it. Please don't worry about being too consistent though! I personally enjoy the spontaneity and don't want you guys overworked :)

Btw, I totally know what shot in JI javabeans is referring to. It was when they were introducing the newsroom and it felt off-putting to me too. That said, I think the PD toned it down after that and found the right balance. There were still some long takes when he liked to move the camera around and shift perspective, but the shots never swirled around like they did that first time. In fact, they were pretty expertly used. I still remember this scene in episode 10 when Jo Jung-suk is wandering drunk around the newsroom asking every women he meets (lol, including Lee Mi-sook, his former sister-in-law,) to date him and I just loved the camerawork in this scene, along with his facial expressions and body movements. There was just something so funny about it.

Well, I'm very happy with this podcast because it focused on my personal favorites of 2016, JI and This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair. Thank you so much for all the hard work!

About This Week, My Wife: Yeahhhh, Kim Hee-won. Because I ultimately did enjoy the resolution to his storyline (I knew they cast the fierce Yeh Ji-won for a reason) I forgave the show for perhaps spending a little too much screen-time on his escapades (which I honestly found quite nauseating).

If I had to pinpoint one underlying issue for me regarding all of it though, I probably just had a really hard time accepting this aspect of the drama's reality: that a married man of Kim Hee-won's caliber could so easily snag any women he wanted when Lee Do-yeon, who is pretty much as attractive as him, was thrown into the storyline again for comic relief & to have a hopeless, unrequited love. It just left a bad taste in my mouth while I was watching the show.

Still, his miserable ending made up for a lot of it. Sometimes a satisfying ending for an arc really can make any discomfort it caused worth it!

Awww, I missed JI! JJS and GHJ was such a dream combo! I hope to see them in another project together!

You are right; it'd be nice if the show had given the other 2 storylines more development because the moms' triangle was hilarious as well! I see potential in that line! ><

Nevertheless, another great comedy from GHJ and JJS.
It makes sucha different when the writing, directing, music, and acting are at the top of their game.... it really makes the show shines! <3
And an ending that actually doesn't sucks? I wouldn't be surprise of an ending that kills the entire drama (because I've seen so many from dramas that were doing so well) but I was so satisfied with the ending, especially the wedding! <3 Icing on a very yummy cake!

Ha, I can't let you go on not knowing which group Lee Minhyuk is from... He's from BtoB, the same group as Yook Sungjae, aka Deokhwa from Goblin.

Here's a duet he sang with Sungjae

And to clear any confusion, even though he sang with Sungjae, he's actually BtoB's rapper.

He just sings for fun but he raps professionally

I prefer his Season 2 cover (he also both sang and rapped in that one), also it's the lesser known song but I love it more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvYULh4YCoQ

I agree, I prefer Season 2 video, much better. But it's not the lesser known song kkkkk. Crush's song is much more known than Geeks' song.

What the... I did a double-take when I saw BTOB and Minhyuk mentioned in the Beanies' comments feed/page.

Couldn't believe someone on here knows him, he's one of the lesser known members (of course, everybody knows Sungjae).

One of my favorite duet he did was the impromptu Sung si kyung duet he sang with Girl's Day Minah. He was promoting his drama at the press conference when they asked the two of them to sing. You could tell how flustered they were.

What's cute is that they had a love line in the drama. I only stopped shipping them when Minah kissed Nam Gong Min in Beautiful Gong Shim. And incidentally, he acted again with Yura, another Girl's day member in After The Play Ends. Haha.

Duet: Sung Sikyung

pwuahahaha. It's so weird to see that ahjusshi who played the villain in I can see your voice smile like that. He looked so impressed O___O I always see him play the villain in dramas so this is weird to see him looking so benevolent when they sang. It's freaking me out. lol

"pwuahahaha. It's so weird to see that ahjusshi who played the villain in I can see your voice smile like that."

kkkkkkk. That ahjusshi is called Jung Woong-in, and is very famous and has been in many movies and dramas.
This is the same clip with millions more views kkkkkkk His face was saying "wow" kkkkk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY2lh1b43yU

@beodimellodi @beodimel I know Min-hyuk from Nightmare Teacher because I'm a fan of Kim So-hyun. He was cute in the drama and I wished they kissed. Coincidence, but Kim So-hyun has also been paired with his group member Sung-jae.
He's not unknown, you know? kkkkkk He's very much famous in Korea for being extremely athletics and breaking records after records. On Idol Athletics Championships, I think he has 16 gold medals individually, not counting medals for team futsal where he scored goals too. He broke all the records for high jump, vault jump, sprint, and hurdles as you can see, very exciting!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b32mDjL42lA
His record videos have millions of views, so you see, he's not unknown like you think.

Well in fact, he's not well-known if you don't speak korean. The videos with million of views are all korean in title, no english title.

And yes, I know he's in charge of athleticism. He's even in charge of acrobatics as you can see him do all these amazing flips and tumbles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUvLnAHYYto

It's just the podcast was talking about him as with his group of music, so I mentioned singing and rapping but not his athletics.

RDTK and 3MAD were the only shows in this installment I watched, so it was great to hear your takes on the others. I also enjoyed hearing the OSTs. JEALOUSY INCARNATE is on my watch list. ;-)

First time podcast listener! This is so amazing and I can't believe I skipped out on this for so long!! Analysis of sitcom feel of the 2 moms in Jealousy Incarnate and wanting more on that storyline really resonated with me!! Them all living together in the end was such a quirky end.

I will say I actually loved Go Gyung Pyo as the second lead. He plays the super nice guy really well and I thought he had great chemistry with Jo Jeong Suk, which was another important aspect of his role. Sung Hoon, to me, comes off as too bratty or emotionally aloof.

Okay, haha, I just have to mention one more thing.

I honestly thought it was so weird, even at the time, that After the Show Ends would employ Ha Suk-jin when he was working on all these other dramas (each pairing him with a different actress). Like, no, really...what was the plan there? If the whole concept was intimacy forming between two leads, then why not find an actor that wasn't the lead of a legit rom-com at the time? If I remember correctly, he was even filming 1% while working on their show.

I'm actually rewatching 1% right now while waiting for new Radiant Office episodes and, well, I can't help hoping JB's theory is true ;)

Oh, this is way late, but I can't remember whether I ever found subs for this. I watched a little of it back when jb enjoyed the chemistry between HSJ and YSH. Initially, they seemed pretty cute before they started trying to force it. But I started to notice all the flaws mentioned AND could barely understand anything so I gave up. Still subs have probably come out since then!

Jealousy has the same writer as Pasta? Man that explains the similarity in asshole-y male lead character and doormat candy female lead! Jo Jung Suk saves it from going overboard, like I can only stand Lee Sung Kyung's character for 10 episodes (granted Chef is worse, and maybe because it was aired years before and alpha-male was so idolised back then).

I can watch this ensemble of casts for 50 episodes to be honest, I love the sitcom-y feel and the casts really makes it work. I don't normally like office dramas (I dropped Chief Kim and Radiant Office in episode 3) but I can see Jo Jung Suk, the moms, and the chief bicker all day in the office. Or Jo Jung Suk bickering with the doctor and nurse, oh Park Jin Joo is hilarious!

Also, I belatedly realised that Do Bong Soon's dad is the same dude from Jealousy during the wedding scene in final episode of SWDBS when he's all suited up and has his specs on. I remember him being a charismatic anchor in Jealousy and I am awed that he can play the beta-male character well like in DBS too - so well that I don't even recognize both being the same actors, and I watched Jealousy twice!

I had to actually pause the podcast when you were mentioning names for the fantasy casting of Jealousy Incarnate to imagine the suggestions in their roles. AND THEN SUNG HOON'S NAME DROPPED AND I SQUEALED. (I skimmed through the episodes of My Secret Romance today, liked it, then went on a Sung Hoon hunt and watched every single scene on KBSdrama of his love line on Five Children last year oops). Yes suddenly wish that had happened.

I couldn't finish Jealousy Incarnate because I thought there was no contest. I'm currently on a Sung Hoon hunt (stopped watching MSR at ep11, will continue later). I'm watching New Tales of Gisaeng and enjoying Sung Hoon's acting (and deep voice, and chiseled features and dreamy eyes.......

It's too bad I haven't finished watching This Week My Wife Will Have An Affair.. I watch them subtitled in Chinese, and the version I have doesn't translate the text messages. So, I miss most of the meaning when so much information is conveyed in text on screen, instead of being spoken. At any rate, that's my own problem. And I could easily find another source to watch it on.

A'way, I'm just so happy to listen to podcasts. I could listen to JB and GF talk all day long. Thanks for this, and...I hope more are in the works!

Don't worry, you girls don't have to be on time, as long as you keep them coming.

And Minhyuk is the same age as me, it feels so weird to see him act in dramas.
