Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 14-20, 2019
by SailorJumun
It’s time to say goodbye to some great dramas this week and get ready to part with even more next week. *sniffles* Where has the time gone?
Cable networks continue to dominate in the ratings game, with The Crowned Clown getting awfully close to 10 percent after only two weeks of airing. The sweet little rom-com Clean With Passion For Now, however, had its lowest ratings thus far after returning from a two-week break.
The first drama to go was thriller Red Moon, Blue Sun, and while it didn’t have the best ratings, I did see some rave reviews from Beanies’ comments. Next, it was game over for the crazy-addictive Memories of the Alhambra, as well as for its competitor Priest. SKY Castle will be ending soon too, and at 22.3 percent, it shows no sign of slowing down.

This is respond from Nielsen Korea regarding confusion of ratings for Goblin:
Hi, this is Nielsen Company Korea.
About your inquiry, we do apply different standard of rating analysis, respectively, between Nielsen's website and portal site (Naver,Daum).
For ratings stated on Nielsen Korea's site stands for how many households saw the drama 'Goblin' among households who saw only via Cable TV.
However, for ratings on Naver and Daum, it is data based on Pay TV households.
If you want to make a comparison between 'Goblin' and 'SKY Castle', you have to compare using rating that has been calculated at the same level.
In other words, 20.509% of 'Goblin' (20/01/17) and 19.243% of 'SKY Castle'(12/01/18) calculated based on Pay TV households, are proper counterparts to be analyzed
Hope my explanation helps your understanding.:)
Regards,
Soyeon

Sounds fair but it did beat GOBLIN on Saturday 19th so it's worth celebrating!

Totally!
I sound like a broken record but it bears repeating -this show's ratings are even more amazing when you consider that it had no celebrated writer like Kim Eun Sook nor star power like Gong Yoo.
Don't get me wrong, some of my faves are popular actors but it's always nice to see good but not popular actors get major roles and shine.
There are good dramas which don't get the ratings they deserve and it irks me especially when I see lousy ones get high ratings just because of some hallyu power. This is one rare case where a good drama wins. Sky Castle deserves every bit of its success.
I read somewhere that a drama like Sky Castle might do well in domestic ratings but won't sell overseas. I am not sure about that because the theme is relatable everywhere. At least it is in Asia. Perhaps the view is that only dramas with hallyu stars like MoTA and Encounter will be considered successful because of the PPLs they garner or the fact that these dramas will sell well overseas due to international fans of the cast.

I am really happy that it beats Goblin, and I hope that it can exceed 25% by final episode.
The reason I sent email to Nielsen Korea to clear the confusion regarding Goblin's ratings since 2 years ago.

Thank you for sharing!
This is kind of like trying to figure out the adjusted gross for a film from 10 yrs ago in comparison to today's ticket price.
Math is not my thing lol.

SKY Castle's record-breaking ratings are even more impressive because it airs at 23:00 compared to Goblin which aired at 20:00.

One can just hope that such a show would at least get a final review from Dramabeans.
Back in the day it would certainly have an episode by episode recap with hundreds of comments...

Yes I agree. I wrote into the DBeans Gods (through the contact us page) lamenting about the lack of an arena for discussing the show. For a site that proclaims its motto as "Deconstructing Korean Dramas" it is awfully sad that SKY Castle is ending its run without a single avenue for viewers to discuss it properly. Back in the day, recaps would have been up within hours and viewers would be crazily refreshing the page and then launching into analyses and theories and character discussions. Miss those days!!!

Rom-coms need to reinvent themselves lol. They can’t get high ratings anymore. Family dramas and makjang, with fewer episodes and in prime time slots, are what Korean viewers seem to want now.
Congrats to SKY Castle! And I’m happy The Crowned Clown is getting attention.

I am really looking forward to watching The Empress Dignity once it ends -the writer must be the best makjang writer out there based on her last show Unni is Alive.

Bad Detective is losing a lot of viewers this week and i can't say in all honesty that it's not deserved.
Lee Seol and Shin Ha Kyun are still leading this boat like the queen and the king that they are, but not even the fact that they are oozing charisma, talent and have an incredible chemistry can fix the damages caused by the unbalanced writing.
I have never seen a drama crumbling so fast after promising so much.
We had few weeks at the start where the stakes keep getting higher and higher while offering meaty character developments, and then after the major revelations of ep11-12 (or ep6) which turned upside down the drama's universe, it seemed like the writer lost his touch.
The implausibility is not anymore since then a guilty pleasure in which the writer indulge once a while for the fun but the core of the drama itself.
Ep 21 and ep22 are from this point of view a total mess: a bad copy and paste of an episode of Black Mirror, with all its excess.
The scenes where people were voting online to decide if the criminals should be killed or spared, or when they were gathering and filming at a crime scene to just watch a man getting killed were bad writing beyond all redemption.
I don't know how they managed to screw the adaptation of a show which seemed to have such a clear identity but it has s clearly past the point where it can be awarded as the biggest disappointment of the year.

Two week hiatus for Clean With Passion For Now was simply too long. Viewers simply drifted away. This is too bad because it is a really good show.

Its a really bad show with very poor and unimaginative plot and awkward age gap. Literally the only people watching it are the fans of the lead and no else cares about it in Korea or outside. There are only hate comments on it from knetz.

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion -even you -but that does not justify your above rant on people watching the show..Just bcos it has low ratings doesn't mean the show is not good..

Sky Castle really is an interesting show (I am only on Ep. 11, and counting). I am happy that the Crowned Clown has made a strong opening. If the writing stays strong, this one is a real winner. Lots of acting power all around.

Surprising to find no comments for My Only Ally-(ratings are at 40 % levels) and it is definitely one of the best family Kdramas made

I only watch one family drama at a time and right now I am committed to "My Healing Love." Occasionally, if there is nothing good on, I will go back and pick up an old family drama (I did this with Father is Strange about 75 percent in).

Sh*t just go real on My Healing Love this weekend, both on the start of confuuuused romantic feelings (one one side, at least) and the takedown of the evil stepmother!! I hope ratings go up next week. This is such a good show with a great cast.
