Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 24-30, 2018

With 2018 wrapping up, we’re hit with all the award shows and all the pre-emptions. And if that doesn’t scream “Happy New Year,” then I don’t know what does.

Along with 2018, we’re also saying goodbye to two dramas this week. Fantasy romance Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter ended with a solid 3.8 percent, and office romance Happy to Die ended with 2.7 percent. The highest ratings for both shows were, interestingly enough, their premiere episodes.

Meanwhile, An Empress’s Dignity continues to top itself, being very close to the 20 percent mark. There wasn’t much to report on weekend dramas (pre-emptions galore), but those that did air, such as SKY Castle and Memories of the Alhambra, are still going strong.

It's a pity that Clean with Passion for Now isn't rating better, it's a really good show. It's not necessarily rating BADLY for a JTBC show but I just think it deserves more.

It's doing fine for a fluffy web-toon. I didn't expect it to be over 5% although it would've been nice.

I think PASSION's ratings might dip lower since Yeo Jin-goo's THE CROWNED CLOWN will be the competition from tvN.
We only had a few sageuks this year so I think it's going to be the Mon/Tues rating winner.

I'm excited and sad at the same time because I love Yoo-jung and Jin-goo to pieces but sageuk is my love.

Mr Lawyer, Mr Jo also is coming for M/T slot, to add the competition. For cable, looks like tvN will win, but overall, I think it will be a tight match between MBC & KBS. Even My Strange Hero is doing fine.

I'm looking forward to Lawyer Jo too although I didn't watch the first one. I'm in it for Go Hyun-jung and her character sounds rather intriguing based on the trailer.

I hope MBC's ITEM (2/2019) will do well. Supernatural genre hasn't been well received by the Korean viewers.

MBC has been stepping up their game in 2018, and honestly the best among public broadcasters for me although not all are rating hit such as Children of Nobody and Bad Papa. Not sure about ITEM, but I think Lee Yuri's new drama will do well.

No way. Passion with cleaning is so dull and unoriginal. The romance tropes are all paint by numbers. They didn’t really do much to make it fresh. Clique to the max.

I’m frankly surprised the rating aren’t lower. I really dislike how the romance got started, by her kissing the main lead to protect her ego. One of the most insensitive characters in a long time. The writers got really lazy as the show progresses. It’s really disappointing that after two years of drama hiatus, Yoo Jung came back with this dump, cause she deserves better. In fact , all the actors in the show deserved better. The main male lead was so phenomenal in his last drama rebel.

Ikr!? That time slot seems to be given to a rom com genre.

But both beauty inside and clean with passion are so dissapointing to me, I can't believe JTBC producing it., the leading female lead are such a talent acctress and deserve better script.

Both Yun Kyun Sang - Kim Yoo Jung deserved much better drama, they totally carried this drama from the day 1. Actually this drama isn't too bad, but the plot might have been better as a webdrama or maybe with idols / rookie actors starring, not someone at the level of these two. It's hard to get a good romcom nowadays, fortunately there is My Strange Hero for me (so far).

Despite my immense love for KYJ and having waited patiently for her return for 2 years, I just couldn't stomach this past 2 episodes. And my poor SJR too. To say this story is cliche is an understatement. YKS's character felt like it was totally lifted off Yoo Seung Ho's I'm Not A Robot character, complete with vacuum friend. I've never been more disgusted with a drama.

Wow, with both Sky Castle and Empress’s Dignity over 10%, this might be one of the rare times the DB audience and the Korean audience agree. Have pigs sprouted wings?

We predicted that EMPRESS might bring back the ratings for SBS based on the writer's past dramas but SKY CASTLE is kind of a sleeper hit. I expected good ratings but not over 10%.
JTBC's female-centric shows with veteran female actors rocks. I support this trend and I love seeing the ladies in their 40+ showcase their talents in successful quality shows.

The veteran actress are pretty amazing and do not disappoint in this drama.
I did not expect it to be so good.

sky castle is pretty addicting.... Though if there is complain., i wish they need to reduce the close up scene with exagerated expression. But so far so good.

Right on the twins scenes. I was actually hoping we get to see Soo Joon’s reaction when he was picked to run as Vice President with Yeh Soo. But sigh.

I wanted to at least see their interactions. Soo Joon is the only one (aside from Ye Seo's parents) who doesn't hate her guts and actually tries to be nice to her

It's pretty amazing that Episode 1 of Sky Castle started at 1.7% and Episode 12 broke JTBC's record for highest drama rating.

I can totally see why ep 1 started at 1.7%. We were introduced to the characters all at once. They were too many of them. I didn’t even bother knowing any of them cuz I was sure I’d drop it after ep 1. But that cliffhanger!!! By the time ep 1 ended, I was like 😶😶 wait whose mom was she again??! I can’t stop watching after that and forced myself to learn whose family is who by ep 2.

I wish there was a recap for this drama on DB 💔 it would be nice to try to analyze each character each episode. I started from hating all of them, raising eyebrow at their twisted views of the world to accepting that they’re flawed, imperfect characters, and that I’ve grown to care for them.

I always attribute ratings for the first episode of any drama to the popularity of the cast, writer and hype . Sky Castle is the type of drama which doesn't score high on these so I am hardly surprised at the ratings for its premiere.

help! Can anyone recommend where to watch Top Star with decent subs? Or Sky Castle at all?
Harrumph, I'm in a slump right now because Viki doesn't have licenses for shows in NA and the hoped-for promise of On Demand Korea hasn't panned out, sub-wise, at all ☹️

Thank you very much! Top Star does have the awful subs but it's a cute show even so.

Biggest and most stressful question for me: will Children of Nobody/Red Moon Blue Sun reach 5%?
The drama, the cast, the writer and PD more than deserve it, why isn't the word of mouth working here? Because of the main subject?

Bad Detective/Less than Evil is doing better but is still fa from the Empress's Dignity and Sky Castle's numbers, and i really don't see what it's missing: why are not quality k-drama rewarded as they should for the hard work?

It's probably like MOTHER. An excellent drama but hard to watch because of the subject matter.

I didn't watched Mother because i'm stucked with the original version but i heard the reviews were very positive, so i thought the drama was a hit too.

I don't know how close it stayed with the original but Sakamato Yuji's script made the japanese version a real research on the concepts of motherhood, womanliness, the sense of family.
It wasn't all about abuse, so it's really a shame to miss this necessary but too rare debate.

Not surprised with An Empress's Dignity's high ratings. Show is very makjang but very addicting in a fun way.

It's fun having certain characters to really hate and to really root. I'm all for realistic portrayal with 1000 shades of characters, but sometimes being able to really root/hate without much calculating or sympathy while watching drama is pure, basic fun!
