[2021 Year in Review] Dramas for ajummas

Man in a Veil

By Nightowl

Maybe it was the pandemic, maybe I am getting older, or maybe I am just going through a bit of a drama slump. Either way, my 2021 drama choices were mostly limited to dramas that target an older audience. They were not necessarily stellar or innovative, but they were engaging, and being in the company of drama watchers and commentators made each of these dramas hilariously entertaining.

Man in a Veil

In KBS’s daily drama Man in a Veil, it was clear the audience was enjoying the antics of the villain — most of the drama was spent on her throwing tea cups. I must say that I enjoyed it a lot, but I did wonder if the restaurant was billing her for all those tea cups that she kept throwing. How exactly did the invisible bill cashier create the invoice?

In addition to the tea-cup-throwing antagonist, there was the second lead who entertained some of the audience with great abs. Unlike most male leads who only show their abs when they are experiencing angst, this one kept showing off his abs when he wanted to eat kimbap (yes, the actual food) and was in love. So you can guess what happened when he was rejected by the female lead: no abs and no kimbap either.

But, the actor is really hardworking – even during his death scene in the middle of winter, the PD made him show his abs for the CPR scene, and the later crying scene from other characters. The poor fella even made an Instagram post to indicate how hard he worked while freezing. Ah, the dedicated work of the actors for their fans.

Miss Monte-Cristo

If you thought that men caught in love triangles have to be interesting or handsome, you are wrong. In KBS’s daily drama Miss Monte-Cristo, viewers could not understand the appeal of the “universal oppa” – the man who inspired love in both the heroine and the villain. Both of these ladies were infinitely more interesting compared to this limpid man who seemed like he was perpetually suffering from constipation. (Yes, that’s him in the middle of the frame wondering “Oh dear, how did I get stuck here?”)

Personally, I much preferred “disco oppa”* – the second lead who did a little dance when presentations went well. We all should dance a little when things are good, no?

*Another fun aspect of the daily drama community is the hilarious nicknames. Most people cannot remember the actual character names. We all have short-term memory loss just like our K-drama characters.

Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce)

No one threw tea cups in this TV Chosun drama! Why, why, why? Yes, that was my primary question while watching a drama about infidelity. While most of the commentators had strong discussions about marriage and relationships, I was more annoyed that the kitchens did not look like they were used and were too sterile. And for a drama that is supposed to have arguments, not a single tea cup was thrown, and no tables were flipped. Tsk, tsk. However, there was plenty of popcorn thrown between commentators, which made it entertaining (as well as alarming) to watch.

To give a little sample of the weirdness of this drama, there was a ghost grandpa in the swimming pool; and for reasons unknown, ghost grandpa changed into swimming shorts.

Red Shoes

Do you know that song “I Hate You but I Love You?” I wonder if the writer of KBS’s Red Shoes was listening to that song while she drafted her scripts. Or maybe the writer had cabin fever after being stuck indoors like many of us, and was inspired.

The drama had a mirror that seemed to magically repair itself. The villain would have conversations with herself and then break the mirror in a fit of rage. However, it seemed to repair itself and was always unbroken in the next scene. Indeed, we all need magic mirrors for when we go cuckoo.

Bossam: Steal the Fate

For a while, I have been convinced that the romantic in me has died. But no, that wasn’t the case. It is just that I am no longer interested in immature romances where the couple doesn’t seem to have any problems other than their romance. After all, there is far more to life than just romance — even if the ads try to convince us otherwise.

So MBN’s sageuk Bossam: Steal the Fate finally gave me a romance I enjoyed – mature people who have faced the weariness and disappointments of life. A romance where less was more, and there was far more at stake than the question of whether they liked each other. In many saeguks, I get lost in the politics, but with this one, I wanted to know how the greed and ambitions of others would impact our leads who just wanted to survive most of all. As Ba Woo the male lead said, “We don’t need a reason to live. We just do.” And finding the small joys of life amidst the dreariness is something we all had to strive for this year.

Be My Dream Family

While KBS’s Be My Dream Family was a daily drama that centered on blending of two families with adult children, it was ultimately a drama about average people with average lives. It captured how difficult being average can be, and what it’s like to face the disappointment of broken dreams. The drama was about learning to enjoy others, liking yourself, and finding the ability to live and laugh. Whether it was exams, education, career goals, or even romance, the drama explored how fears and doubts can freeze us like an athlete scared by the memory of her past injury.

Then, there was the simple advice the drama left us with: do we stop training or getting on the mat before we even know the outcome of the match? Amidst the fears and uncertainties, sometimes we just need to keep on training, and keep on showing up in our everyday lives. A rather apt message for this year.

So that was dramaland 2021 for me: filled with dramas that were made funnier because of the community of viewers. To the drama commentators, viewers, and fans everywhere, thank you!

Nightowl - Your ironic observations, especially the ML's hard work in Man in a Veil and the limpid ML in Miss Monte Cristo had me laughing. Thank you! Like you, I loved the subtlety and nuance of Bossam.

I've been fretting about the roles of ajummas in drama. If they are not noisy OTT harridans, they are evil (t)witches, especially of course the MILs. What really gets me riled is that the momentum of the drama all depends upon the machinations/class consciousness/ prejudice/ obstinacy/fears and anxieties of the evil ajumma. It makes me wonder about the possible existence of bubbling and never-ending resentments against women in SK. Have you noticed this?

It might seem there are no roles for ajummahs if you watch the shorter prime time dramas but it really depends on the genre. If you watch the weekend or daily drama genre a lot, you will see a lot more variety and depth. Even in over-the-top makjang dramas, it is the ajummahs and ajusshis who are having the most complex arc and have to showcase a range of emotions. :)

In Bossam I love that they also struggled with mundane things like you need to eat, keep a roof over your head, the reality of everyday life is not ignored. and how Ba Wo is a total Beta male who is wayyyy too soft for that world, and tho he does NOT by any means lack will power, since he has lived like that without going crazy and as a single dad. but his heart is just a friggin unlocked door to a diamond warehouse. . in his 21st century life he´d get the least stressful job like a sound engineer. or a gardener.

and the princess is better than the modern hardworking candies who have a lifestyle of odd jobs. she had never done it but just dived right in.
when it is true love, sometimes you dont have to say it, you just feel the presence

Yes, absolutely! I loved that we got to see the struggles of everyday mundane life and the joys in those small moments. Both the characters were so well-written - gah! They definitely captured my heart! :)

Be My Dream Family was one of my favorite dramas of the year, I never thought I would love a daily drama the way I loved BMDF. There were months that I felt so bad I couldn't even watch one single episode of anything, everything felt wrong, except for BMDF. They really became my dream family, their struggles were so relatable and their bond was so precious. Seeing them grow and heal also helped me to do the same.
I don't know if it was the timing of the show (in my life) or just really good writing but it was wonderful, I felt great watching it. Just lovely.

It really was lovely. What I loved is that it was slice of life but wasn't boring. It covered a range of real life topics and problems but at no point was it so depressing that it made me stop watching. It was such heartwarming gem. :)

That's one of the things I love about the show, they did such a great job with character development! The first half of the show I was so done with that couple, but by the end I liked the actress and
I thought the second son was okay. And together they were cute. Hahaha

Wow, your post made me think we were talking about dramas from another dimension.
Never knew any of them being broadcasted this year.
But it was fun to read.
Thank you!

Hahahahha.... daily dramas and makjang genre do tend to be of another dimension LOL!!!! Thanks -- I wasn't sure if people would enjoy reading as many may have not watched these dramas. However, I love this genre when I am going through a drama slump or just bored -- the company of viewers and commentators make it very funny because most of us don't take any of these plot twists or characters that seriously. There are lots of giggles and snark! :)

To watch Korean dailies you need to watch official TV channels for example KBS channel on YouTube, they are usually not available on standard streaming platforms such as Viki or Netflix (at least not in my region).

Your post made my day.

If I am a braver person, I would have watched Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce), just to see grandpa ghost turning into swimming shorts. But I have learnt my lesson with Empress Ki and Wonderful Mama, 50 episodes are too much for me even if they are laden with pretty oppas.

Awesome! :) This genre is best enjoyed when you are watching with a group. Even during the boring stretches, the commentary of viewers can keep you entertained. It is tough to watch the longer dramas by yourself.
Love (ft marriage and divorce) was ridiculous to the core but rather amusing to watch as a group. If I was watching by myself, I would have dropped it.....

BE MY DREAM FAMILY was absolutely first rate- one of the best dailies in a long time. It was certainly far better than the Weekender we had going at that time. I eagerly looked forward to each new episode. Part of what made it so good was watching our female lead play a, ahjumma character so completely different from so many of the other roles where I have seen her.

BOSSAM was a really good Sageuk- and for the reasons you have noted here.

Revolutionary sisters was a bitter unwatchable nightmare and I was glad that I dropped it very early. From comments, it did not improve at all. One of those hate watches from what I can gather.
Be my dream family would have worked as a weekend drama as well -- it was just sweet and earnest. And I enjoyed the different themes it took on -- how many dramas do you see a character struggle with menopause?

“ Part of what made it so good was watching our female lead play a, ahjumma character so completely different from so many of the other roles where I have seen her.”

My elderly mother, having seen her in so many dramas acting a bad person, kept expecting/waiting for her to show her true (bad) colors…

As a result of the reduction of the number of KDramas being produced in the last year, and the Netflix-ing of KDramas (more action and gore, more geared towards male viewers, less romance), I've started watching dailies. I've dropped a number while viewing. Two that I stayed with till the end are Man in a Veil and presumably (because it's still got a few weeks to go) The Second Husband. The later has my pick as then best daily of the year, unless it severely messes things up in the remaining episodes. I feel like the writing has been a lot stronger than many of the other dailies with less churning in place and less time given to annoying side characters. In addition, the female lead's character is not a doormat (after the first few weeks of the show, at least). The lead couple is genuinely adorable - the male lead has grown into the stand-up kind of guy any girl would want to have as a husband.

The two WORST dailies of the. year were IMO Red Shoes and Phoenix 2020 (which technically, started in 2020 but ended in 2021). Red Shoes had the most unlivable heroine I've ever seen in a KDrama. Phoenix 2020 was a remake of an older drama; the first seen was a fast-forward between the female and supposed male lead. He exited the show mid-drama, written out for some reason, never to be seen again, and another character took his place. So apparently the fast-forward scene never happened? So, mid drama, the show deviated from then show it remade.

That was "Unlikable" heroine (Red Shoes). Darn Siri autocorrect.

I am enjoying Second Husband a lot. I didn't include it as it is still airing. We can't rate a daily completely till it ends LOL.
I would agree with you on Phoenix 2020 -- it was so messy offscreen as well. I dropped it early as I hated the female lead and kept thinking the villains were more likeable.
Red shoes was bizare. I disliked Gemma and I found her annoying. If it wasn't for the villain couple, I would have dropped it. It was one of those dramas that irked you but you still kept watching anyway. The song "I hate you but I love you" should have been the theme.
