Five drama recommendations… for girls’ night

This week we bring you drama recs for girls’ night — in other words, great female-centric stories about life, love, and friendship. Dramaland does it well (though not terribly often), and this is one sort of theme that everyone rejoices over when it comes around, and reaches for more of when it’s offered.

Age of Youth (2016)

Any mention of dramas centered around female friendships will always bring to mind Age of Youth. Following five girls as they confronted the ghosts of their pasts and healed from them, this drama portrayed the trials and tribulations of growing up and navigating life as a young adult in such a relatable manner. With a solid ensemble cast, and standout performances from Han Ye-ri as the diligent Jin-myung, and Park Eun-bin as the boisterous Ji-won, this heartfelt coming-of-age drama captured my heart and never let go.

Every character has their unique quirks and flaws, which caused many a conflict at first, ranging from Eun-jae’s misinterpretations of her housemates’ behavior to the recurring conflicts between the diametrically opposite Yi-na and Ye-eun. Still, the Belle Epoque girls eventually learned to embrace one another’s idiosyncrasies. They may bicker and quarrel, but when push comes to shove, they’ll have one another’s backs no matter what. Sometimes that means whacking your friend’s awful boyfriend with your purse, and sometimes that means pulling an all-nighter to cover your friend’s convenience store shift. I love that even with romance arcs thrown into the mix, the girls’ friendships are always at the front and center of the show. Ji-won may have been the one to wear the Wonder Woman costume, but every one of these girls are heroines in their own right. –@solstices

Buam-dong Revenge Club (2017)

I will use any opportunity to talk up this gem of a drama. I’m always up for female-centric stories of friendship, and Buam-dong Revenge Club (more commonly known as Avengers Social Club) is one of my all-time favorites. It’s heartwarming and hilarious watching this endearing trio of women bond as they bumble their way toward revenge against the men who’ve done them wrong. Throw Jun in the mix as their teenage partner-in-crime (and the brains behind the operation), and you have one memorable drama.

Lee Yo-won, the ever-wonderful Ra Mi-ran, and Myung Se-bin play our leads who are as different as they come in terms of class, personality, and circumstance. But amidst their quest for revenge, they form a lasting friendship born of support, trust, and understanding that’s lovely to see. And as a bonus, there’s also a sweet stepmother and stepson relationship. Although there is some heavy subject matter (one of the women is abused), it’s not a grim drama – in fact, it’s primarily a comedy. The drama is only 12 episodes, so it has time to develop the story and characters without overstaying its welcome. Awesome female friendships, hilarity, found family, and women coming into their own – what’s not to love? –@quirkycase

Search Query: WWW (2019)

A girls’ night in dramaland wouldn’t be complete without the powerful trio from Search Query: WWW. Ta-mi, Ga-kyung, and Hyun are at the top of their professional game, but when life gives them lemons, they’re the kind of gals who grasp them in their fists and juice them with their bare hands. The thing I admire about this trio is that they’re assertive and go after what they want, whether it’s being the driving force behind the number one search engine in the country, taking the lead and actively pursuing a man, or finally getting free of a corrupt and oppressive mother-in-law. It’s a refreshing portrayal of women in a medium that often paints its leading ladies as needing saving, either professionally, financially, or from an evil ex-boyfriend.

K-dramas often pit women against each other, too, making them catty rivals who seemingly hate one another for the sake of drama. While the loyalties between these three women are sometimes strained — as they are on opposing sides as business rivals — they eventually come together and prove that strained friendships can be mended and healed. And like the queens that they are, they ride off into the sunset looking fierce — sunglasses on and convertible top down. –@DaebakGrits

Be Melodramatic (2019)

There are many things to love about Be Melodramatic, and the great female friendships are certainly near the top of that list. Our three leading ladies are long-time friends and roommates who have been through thick and thin together, and their love for each other is evident. They’re quirky, a bit of a mess, yet strong in their own ways and like the best kind of friends, make each other even stronger.

Romantic chemistry in a drama often gets the spotlight, but friendship chemistry can really make a drama shine. This drama wouldn’t have worked had Chun Woo-hee, Jeon Yeo-bin, and Han Ji-eun not had strong chemistry as our central trio. They’re great individually and together, lighting up the screen with their hilarious antics (that oppa scene with Han-joo had me in stitches) and delivering on the emotional moments (Eun-joo seeing herself on camera and realizing she needed help was gut-wrenching). I loved watching this group of friends support each other and grow amidst the absurdities of life. If you’re in the mood for a slice-of-life style quirky dramedy with strong female characters and friendships at the core, Be Melodramatic is well worth the watch. –@quirkycase

The One and Only (2021)

Ahhh, nothing brings a group of women together quite like the murder of a man who really, really deserved it. In the case of The One and Only, the dead man in question definitely had it coming, so I don’t feel morally conflicted about rooting for In-sook, Se-yeon, and Mi-do. All terminally ill and living out their final days in a women’s hospice facility, this trio decides to rid the world of some evil on their way out the metaphorical door.

The events of that night predictably lands them in some hot water, but the heart of this drama isn’t the suspenseful story arc of them trying to avoid arrest and another less benevolent killer. Instead, it’s about how these very different women form an unlikely friendship — under some extraordinary circumstances — and choose to leave the world on their own terms. There’s also a terrific ensemble cast of women in the form of the other hospice patients who occasionally lighten the mood with their matchmaking antics, but they also drive home the message that life is fleeting but infinitely better with a posse of friends by your side. –@DaebakGrits

Search: WWW was really good and the only one that readily comes to my mind. The badass red lipstick she wore to face the committee, talk of power.

Because this life is my first's girl friend trio was remarkable; and my fellow citizens heroine girls group was a good support system.

Great list! Especially love the trio in Search: WWW. So many great moments between them, including the patented kdrama wrist-grab rescue! Also loved that moment when Scarlet goes and beats the shit out a car, no questions asked, just because that's what friends are for 🤣.

My list would probably include the female friendships in Because This is My First Life, Weightlifting Fairy and 20th Century Boy and Girl. While these are not purely female-centric dramas, there's something lovely about watching female friends who grow and change together.

I wasn't expecting to see The One and Only in the list. It's a pretty depressing drama for me and the friendship didn't make up for the terminal illness and investigation.

Age of Youth was really great. I loved so much Han Ye-Ri and Park Eun-Bin in their role. PEB did so great in the second season between the crazyness of her character and the revelation of the past.

Be Melodramatic was so underrated. I really liked the fact they lived in the same apartment to be with Eun-Jung (and because it's hard to find an apartment in Seoul :p).

For Girls night, I suggest Dance Sport Girls and Girls Generation 1979 too.

This is a great list. I would also add Age of Youth 2 to this list.

Agreed! I never watch Season 1 so I missed the story of Han Ye Ri & Yoon Park and the funny scenes of Park Eun Bin as Ji Won. (Saw her in some talk shows and realized that she is such a quiet person compared to her character in the show).

But I can't bring myself to watch season 1 because of Ryu Hwa Young.

Why you don't like RHY? She was fun in the role.

It is not about her acting but RHY as a person. So far I managed to avoid most of her shows except for her guest appearance in 2nd season and The Beauty Inside. I guess I am still bitter about what happened to T-ARA.

Ohhh I see, I don't know anything about her as a person, but I understand.

Argh, a fine list and all but the post just serves as yet another reminder for me that no matter how successful Han Ye-ri and Lee Yo-won have been, their talent deserves so much more fame and opportunities.

For girls' night with alcohol, laughs, and tears, Work Later, Drink Now.

I really liked both Age of Youth and Be Melodramatic. I liked aspects of The One and Only, but I think they spent too much time on the murder plot instead of developing the friendship.

I also recommend Work Later, Drink Now for girls' night. It took me a couple tries but once I got past the excessive alcohol consumption, I really had fun watching the three leading ladies and their friendship. They were all weird in their own ways but ride or die for each other.

I love Search WWW. Those 3 and the 3 from Because This is My First Life are my picks for favorite female friends.

The women in BECAUSE THIS IS MY FIRST LIFE were particularly memorable.

Others to add to memorable women:

- Girls Generation 1979 - A show that needs more love
- When the Camellia Blooms - the women in this drama are the stand out. With special mention of Son Dam Bi who was heart breaking and Yeom Hye Ran

Another that many may not agree with is:
- Marriage not Dating. For me this show only stands out for the amazing relationship between the brilliant, and missed, Han Groo and Kim Hae Sook who is equal parts stoic and tragic. The supposed romance elements of this show is defined by awful men all round and the show is more about how women deal or become trapped with such poor partners.

+1 for Be Melodramatic. First time seeing Jeon Yeo Bin in anything and was so impress with her. Plus, Anh Jae Hong was great in the show.

+1 for Because This is My First Life. Esom was such a girl crush.

Buam-dong Revenge Club (2017) sounds interesting. Will consider watching this show.

Hmmm… this is a good list for “girl power” and female bonding/friendships.

But it’s not a great list (in my humble opinion) for girls “kdrama” night.

Instead, I suggest dramas with swoon worthy leads. Or on the other side of the spectrum- horror. The squeals and shrieks will make a fun and memorable night and cement the friendship more than watching a drama “about” female friendship.

But I do get the point. You are highlighting female centric plots. Vs literally kdrama for girls night.

I agree. Coffee Prince would be the girl's night pick for me. Swoony worthy Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook.

If it's Coffee Prince, it's Kim Dong Wook. Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook would make it Goblin 😅.

So glad someone went with Horror. Also, on a similar tangent; Lee Shi Yeong is so awesome in "No Mercy". I suspect its topic lead it to be one of the great unsung action films. The 2002 HK "So Close" also sits in that list.

How LSY didn't go on to do a series of action films is beyond me.

P.S. As others leave the genre behind, Japan is still making a enjoyable and sometimes fascinating vampire/zombie stories.

I couldn’t get in to Be Melodramatic, I’ve tried a couple of times. It seems like something I should like on paper but 🤷‍♀️ sometimes it just doesn’t click.

I'm not sure if The Red Sleeve would qualify, but I like the friendship of the 4 court ladies, and the female lead's mentor. I've forgotten all the characters' names and too lazy to Google...

Not a girl-centric drama but I remember strongly rooting for the FL and her bestie in She Was Pretty and feeling relieved their friendship survived the guy-crisis. Probably at that point I haven’t really seen a lot of “girls getting along in a drama” so the two kinda stuck with me.

SEARCH: WWW is a really superior drama, not only from the acting standpoint but also from the direction and cinematography. I would recommend it to anyone.

I totally agree, with one exception--I really thought the agonizing of Im Soo-Jung's character over her relationship with a younger man was way too drawn out, because too much of it was based on an insecurity that she couldn't make him happy in the long run. She was beautiful, smart, and dynamic -- of course he would fall deeply in love with her. It actually seemed a bit sexist to me, because a male character dealing with a similar age difference in a younger woman would hardly contort himself into knots over such a relationship.

It really was sexist- and you are exactly right about why he could very logically fall for this incredible woman (and she really is in every way) and her insecurities have no real foundation at all.

Haven’t seen The One and Only but the rest of the list is wonderful and part of my comforting dramas that I rewatch once in awhile.

Just realised that Jeon Hye-jin now has two roles where she’s oppressed by a chaebol mother-in-law 😅

I love all of these except for Search: WWW, which felt kind of meh to me. Found it hard to root for any of the characters. I did like Jeon Hye-jin in her role though. Haven't seen The One and Only, but I want to.

Yay, this is such a fun post! Highly recommend you all to watch Avengers Social Club and Age of Youth!!

I enjoyed watching 'The woman who still wants to marry' in 2021/2020 and the friendship between the three women was the best part. There is an iconic scene where they are caught on television, head to toe in red taking part in a shamanic ceremony. Gives a whole new meaning to BFFs!

Another drama I liked is the friendship in True Beauty and My ID is Gangnam Beauty, the main female character has been bullied in the past and it's wonderful to see them make friends and embrace who they are.

In the same vein, I want to mention User Not Found, it's a webdrama about two girls in high school that are trying to hide their identity. The acting isn't the best but I thought they tried to do a good job at talking about the cliques at school.

Another drama, I wanted to talk about is Her Private Life, yes mainly for Ryan Gold ;)
One of the highlights of the drama was the lovely friendship between Deok-mi and Seon-joo.

I also enjoyed Your House Helper, Go back Couple and Oh my Ghost, Protect the boss for the amazing friendships!

Be Melodramatic!
Such a wonderful drama. 3 besties, loaded with a gay brother and a boy all in one place. Not a typical Kdrama, but done so beautifully.

Adding Because This Is My First Life, like some other beanies. I like it so much, too.

I love this list.
Search WWW, Age of Youth and Be Melo are the best.
I have Avengers on my watchlist.
And I dropped One and Only, but I liked the girls revenge from EP 1, they were funny.

Please don't date him (Their personalities and age were sooo different but they were a nice group of friends. And they were so funny).

You are my spring (best "becoming besties with your boyfriend's ex-wife" trope ever? And they were so supportive and honest and cute and funny! Love them).

Fight for my way (I love our girls. I love their mother-daughter relationship in the flashbacks of their childhood).

Into the Ring (I think a bunch of beanies have talked about this girlfriends, they were super supportive and cute).

Hi Bye Mama! (I just love the them so much 😭. Their relationship was so freaking beautiful and healing).

Bonus:;Mr Queen (Bong Hwan-ah is a guy I know, but he was on the Queen's body,so wtv, sue me🤣).

Ex-girlfriend's Club was a hoot. The way the girls unwillingly bond, while sometimes being selfish made such good comedy. And each of the guys playing supporting roles were so fun.
