The 1st Blue Dragon Series Awards commence!

1st Blue Dragon Series Awards

Korea’s famous Blue Dragon Film Awards have expanded for the first time this year to reach miniseries, with the specific intention of focusing on streaming content.

On July 19, 2022 the 1st Blue Dragon Series Awards was held. Stars walked the red carpet looking too beautiful to be real, and all eyes were on the new world of media that streaming content in Korea is quickly opening up.

I might grumble a lot about how streaming content is radically changing the K-drama substance and format that we know and love so well, but also, it’s kind of exciting to see new avenues open up, and new talent on the horizon, all while some of our favorite actors and dramas are recognized with shiny trophies.

It's nice to see the red carpet looking more colourful than usual.

It's a WAVVE drama from 2021 also called Going to the Blue House (or something like that). Not sure about streaming rights...

I think I'll have to check out Political Fever by force now.

Lee Jung-jae. The award was waiting for him already☺️.

I'm confused as to what this awards show's purpose is. The Blue Dragon organization created another awards show that only focuses on niche streaming TV (???). Why not just create an awards show for all kdramas?

A good number of really great shows ain't reflected in the awards due to the airing platform. If not for awards like APAN awards, breakout tvchannels(not the big 4) wouldn't have a number of thier works recognized in the awards.
Streaming platform on another hand is a sorrier case.
And with the amount of cash pumped into production budget on streaming channels, they(the streaming platforms) deserve the homebased recognition.

The Baeksang Awards cover all TV, streaming or not. Is streaming really in such need of visibility and recognition that you need a separate awards show dedicated solely to streaming shows? Most of these winners already won at the Baeksangs.

Many award shows nowadays seem like filler content whose purpose is to hand out participation trophies.

Hmmmm. You're right with the Baeksang awards.

It basically is an award for all kdramas because it's not just limited to dramas airing on streaming services alone. As you can see, shows like Happiness and Through the Darkness got noms too because they were streamed as well as aired on television. Pretty much all kdramas are streamed somewhere in SK.

Like you said, the same dramas were nominated and/or won at the Baeksang's so it's not like good shows aren't being recognized because they are from a streaming service.

Geum Sae Rok is awsome in Youth of may, so glad at least she get nominated in this since Baeksang won't thinking of nominating her. Congrats to the winner

Highlight of this award show for me would be Kim Goeun winning that best actress for her wonderful portrayal of Kim Yumi. She deserves it so much. Totally teared up with her speech thanking all the prod team and her co-stars and when she mentioned Ahn Bohyun, the camera focused on him and he was actually tearing up too like a proud friend.

Hellbound's Kim Shin-rok strikes again! I still can't get that performance out of my mind, and clearly I'm not the only one.

Just noticed Lee Hak-joo's Best Supporting Actor award, which I'm also very pleased about. Actors (and, less commonly, actresses) do win awards for flamboyant villain roles. But no matter how good they are, they are seldom rewarded in that way for playing truly awful characters like Lee's presumptuous, amoral young aide/advisor in Political Fever aka Going to the Blue House Like This.

Very well deserved indeed! Her role in Hellbound is night and day from the strong detective she plays in Beyond Evil. Watching these two dramas one after another is some reckoning of her brilliance.

Through The Darkness is very good. I am going to re-watch it, again, haha! It's like a fine wine, getting better and better after sometime. Kim Nam Gil should have won but Lee Jung Jae is also awesome in Squid Games.

I am so glad Happiness has nominations, it was a demanding drama for actors. Everyone there deserves award for getting through that intensity. Kind of reminded me of theatric play with a lot of dialogue and constant focus you need to keep.
