Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Seasons of Blossom: My heart! Oh man. There was something about the dreamy, atmospheric way the flashbacks between Ha-min and So-mang were shot that I was absolutely entranced. I could watch long cuts of them doing nothing in the art room for hours. So, I really wasn’t as invested in the present-day ulzzang characters’ story was much as I was the past storyline. I guess I will grow to like it more as So-mang and Jae-min connect more, but basically I watched through all four mini episodes living for the flashbacks. In fact, I liked it so much now I’ve got my eye on this PD and I’m hoping he gets a bump in his resume because of this one. Oh, and Seo Ji-hoon should also get the accolades he deserves… but that goes without saying, since I think his top five fans of all time write for this site hehe.

It’s Beautiful Now: It had a good run aside that last minute cancer nonsense, which thankfully, was well resolved. I really enjoyed the drama, and looked forward to watching it every week. It’s the first weekender that held my interest since Once Again, and now that I’m back in that space, I’m looking forward to the next one.

Today’s Webtoon: My biggest takeaway from the show is actor Kim Do-hoon. He won me over with his portrayal of artist Shin, and I’m going to be on the lookout for his next project — minus The Law Cafe which I dropped. Generally, the drama was an okay watch, and that’s about it.

Once Upon a Small Town: Go away, Min! Go away, ajummas who interrupt with snacks when two people are inches away from kissing! Thank you for walking away, Officer Ahn, when two men were acting like petty little boys on your afternoon stroll. More female leads should follow your example.

Mental Coach Jegal: This drama will definitely take my emotions on a ride. One minute, I’m laughing at Jegal’s antics, and the next, I’m riled up at the corruption in the sports industry. Nothing annoyed me this week like the mothers signing the petition to bring Coach Oh back. What are they teaching their daughters? That it’s fine to get physically assaulted as long as they can compete and get medals? This is exactly why people like Coach Oh exist. They know they can get away with anything because of mums like these, and these corrupt overlords in the Olympics committee who believe that the end justifies the means. Ugh! He’s not even remorseful, and it’s obvious that people like him will never change. Tsk.

Youth MT: This is crazy hilarious, and these guys are a riot! Scaredy cat Hwang In-yup and bad at guessing games Park Seo-joon were fun to watch. But I’d like to see more of Chae Soo-bin, as she doesn’t seem to have much of a presence yet. Generally, it’s so nice to see these actors in their natural element, and I can’t wait for the remaining episodes.
PS: From the cast, I’m already making mental notes of pairings I’ll like to see in dramas. Ji Chang-wook has already worked with Kim Yoo-jung and Nara, so can he work with Chae Soo-bin next? I want to see her with Park Seo-joon as well. Then a Jin-young and Nara pairing will also be nice. I’m still undecided about who I want to pair Park Bo-gum with.
PPS: How much is the budget of this show?

The Golden Spoon: Nope. Not for me. And I’m disappointed because the premise sounded so good. I love stories about humble beginnings (and middles and ends) but this is too over the top. I have a similar problem with Little Women. Sigh. I’m in need of a good slice-of-life right now.

Love in Contract: I like it. I don’t get it. But I like it.

Healer
I now understand why this show is legendary amongst K drama fans and the beanies comments section was on fire. Looking forward to working my way through the highest comments section on the site. It has solid writing, acting and pacing throughout. I hope to finish the last two episodes today as I have a long distance rowing session lined up to deal with the anticipated action scenes.

This is the only show I have seen where the potential for noble idiocy was dealt with through conversation and everyone moved on.

Young Actors retreat❤️
Episode 4
I am really enjoying this mix of games and getting to know you activities. Inyeop is just the cutest thing, he is constantly thinking worst case scenario but gallantly does the task anyway. When he and Bogum were talking about how they bring the sunshine whenever they do outdoor shoots I had to agree but for completely different reasons😊

Once upon a time in a small town
I have enjoyed this sweet little drama and I am interested to see how they will choose to end this series. I look forward to seeing the actors in their future projects.

Seasons of Blossom
A great start to the series looking forward to seeing where they take this show.

The Golden spoon
Enjoying it so far.

One dollar lawyer
Enjoying it so far.

Love in Contract
This was supposed to be my Business Proposal no brainer rom com replacement and instead ended up being a blend of Sh**ing Stars (supposedly light drama with a randomly placed unnecessarily heavy storyline) with Find me in your memory (thriller elements alongside a potentially fated love story).

The Package
This slice of life with a holiday setting has been a joy to watch so far. It is very funny in parts and I am looking forward to getting to know the characters as they travel around France and reflect and grow as individuals.

Mental coach Jegal
This week we saw an updated version of the A-Team using their sporting excellence to dethrone the worst coach ever, which was a fun watch. However, the parents seem to be working undercover for the coach as they are all about the kudos of having a kid in the National team at any cost. They openly condone bullying and abuse as a right of passage that can be managed once you reach the other side.

Unicorn
I enjoy the funny side of this show but love how they raise really serious issues too.

If you wish upon me
Hanging on only for the bean of disappointment, so I just need it to end. If you deleted the gang storyline and kept the rest this has been a great show.

Completed:
Let me off the Earth
Enjoyed this school fantasy drama about the consequences for a 17 year old of re living his school days aged 17-19 thirty three times. The actors did well and the dilemmas were interesting and went beyond the usual bully issues.

Today’s webtoon
I earned the bean of disappointment with this one. I expected light hearted slice of life rom com and instead endured office politics, a stalker storyline, random fantasy elements, a poorly executed healing process and worst of all a half hearted romance which should have been excluded.

On hold:

Due to the number of new releases I have had to put the dramas I just started on the back burner. I expect some of the new ones will be dropped so I can pick them back up.

I'm so glad you're enjoying Healer! Your coping strategy is ingenious. Now I want to set up a screen somewhere near my rowing machine.

I might give The Package a whirl - I used to live in France and it would be fun to see familiar places from such an outsider's POV.

I am glad you like Healer :)

I'm also watching Young Actors' Retreat. It is a gem. It's a ray of sunshine among this year's very bleak drama crop. And I love these two, too! I'm warming up to Bo Gum, so much that I'm planning to watch Love in the Moonlight for the first time! As to Hwang In-hyeop, isn't he the cutest thing? He is HILARIOUS in that summer horror training. Poor little thing. I laughed till I cried and then I laughed again. SO FUN!

Can't believe the next ep will be aired on 30th Sep. I will probably need to wait another 2 more days for the subs to be ready. Time goes slowly now.

I decided to skip all the new thrillers and melodramas and stick to rom-coms only. Unfortunately, all the rom-coms I'm watching are full of murder and other crimes 😭.

COMPLETED
Big Mouth - This show hated its women. At least things ended well for Chang-ho, the only character the writer liked.

Today's Webtoon - Nice neat ending. Some of the office stuff was more realistic than I've generally seen in k-dramas. Needed less segues into stories that went nowhere.

The Good Detective S2 - Show spent too much time pretending Na-na was some sort of genius supervillain, when all she did was to payoff back-stabbing minions.

ONGOING
The Law Café - Loved Ep. 5 and the discussion around consent. Ep. 6 was troubling not least because it felt like they were endorsing arson as a solution to bullying.

Once Upon a Small Town - The parallel friendship stories in Ep. 7 were so cute that Eps. 8 and 9 with the clingy ex-girlfriend plotline (how many times have we seen this?!) were a real disappointment.

Good Job - Everybody act surprised about Sec. Kim 😱. This week was just chock-full of kisses in k-dramas, wasn't it?

STARTED
May It Please the Court - If you take the (murder-y?) ML out of this story, it just feels like you are re-watching Why Her?.

Love in Contract - FL and bestie are fun. ML is okay. As for the SML and chaebol family drama…🥱.

C-DRAMAS
Dropped Thousand Years for You. Really had expected more from this but it's tonally all over the place and makes me feel nothing.

Paused A Romance of the Little Forest because the FL's pathological lying is getting to me. Will wait for all episodes to be subbed and try again coz I like Vin Zhang.

Once Upon a Small Town: Somehow this is the only thing I’m watching live right now, but I’m not mad about it. Held my breath for basically the entire peach wine storage shed scene, in a good way.

Narco Saints: I’m sloooowly watching this with my partner. I really like the main character, and find him super interesting, but I’m slightly disappointed in the main baddie. He’s sort of been painted as a straight up psychopath (at least, that’s really the only way I can explain his actions in episode 2), which I find less interesting than if he had a more complicated or ambiguous backstory. But the scheming is fun, the not knowing if everyone is double crossing everyone else is engaging, and I would totally wear Park Hae-soo’s floral jacket.

Thirtynine: I actually started this last week, and just finished the last couple of episodes this week. I think this drama suffered from expectations. There were expectations about the plot, about the friendship of the three women, about the characters themselves. And if I step back and look at the whole thing with a critical eye, there are definitely things that could have been improved. But I honestly enjoyed the story as I was watching it. I know it was annoying for some people that the story focuses on terminal illness when they were hoping it would focus on issues that are more common for women that age to face, but I appreciated that it forced our characters to think about what they valued, what they were willing to accept, and what they wanted to change in their lives in the last year of their 30s. Maybe it would have been nice if the show had focused on all three friends equally, but what it lacked in evenness, it more than made up for in the depth of the relationship between Mi-jo and Chan-young, and once I was willing to accept what it was really about, it was easy for me to enjoy the episodes. It’s not a drama that I need to return to again and again, but the romances were cute, the friendships were fun, the family bonds between the women and each others’ parents were beautiful, and I really liked the exploration of what makes a family in the first place.

Never Give Up: Just started this, but totally loving it already! I am laughing out loud so often, and our two main characters are so great together, it makes me really excited to see their relationship grow.

Thirty nine would have been fine for me if it was about how friends support a friend to die well but telling her she had to be happy when it is truly everyone’s worst nightmare was too much. She ended up worrying how her best friend would cope with the loss rather than them worrying about how to help her with her endings. I think the get together was a wonderful idea and we should all do something similar at key points. The only advantage to those who have been given the heads up is that they can choose how to prepare the rest of us expect to have long lives and put off prep.

Oh, that's interesting, I didn't take it as Mi-jo telling Chan-young she had to be happy. I took it as her acceptance that Chan-young was not going to get treatment and her resolution to try to make the best of a truly nightmarish situation for all of them. I can see how you would have gotten that though. To me, it wasn't really about them supporting their dying friend, although that was part of it. It was more about each of them dealing with the situation in different ways, to the best of their abilities, and how it affected how they lived their lives.

I agree that Thirty Nine is underrated. Maybe you have to be in a certain head set or of a certain age for it. I thought it was a good portrayal of how three specific women/personalities deal with a grave situation. No one is perfect and everyone learns.

Love in Contract (Episode 1-2) - Mood: C-
Imagine a story where the narrative revolves around the unlikely friendship between three characters who don’t fit with societal norms: 1) Sang Eun’s anti-marriage attitude, 2) Gwang Nam’s homosexuality, 3) Ji Ho’s anti-social personality disorder. Sang Eun in this story is in concurrent long-term contract marriages with both guys and the trigger of the plot would then be Sang Eun’s decision to retire, leading to hijinks as 1) her parents frown upon divorce, 2) he’s got to come out to his homophobic family, 3) he’s gotten dependent on her to mask his lack of empathy. The plot then moves along, showing how the trio struggles yet thrives under societal discrimination. But instead we got this soapy love triangle: I’m glad Kim Jae Young’s gonna get lots of new fans due to his unrequited love? If only the writing could be better!

Big Mouth (Series review) - Mood progression: C / C / C- / C- / D+ / D+ / D / D-
Wow, what a disgraceful conclusion with so many narrative arcs just left open frivolously. Who was the elder’s son who is supposedly a serial killer? Did no one find out that Hye Jin was murdered? What was in the note that Jerry read, also did the swap matter? In a thriller where the writer even went to taunt the audience early on, this is just a self-implosion.

Today’s Webtoon (Series review) - Mood progression: C / C- / C- / D+ / D / D / D / D
Compared to the other shows that ended last week, I guess you could say this had the best ending relatively speaking, but that doesn’t really erase how messy the 1st half of the show was and how redundant the drama in the 2nd half was as well. I also realised after the ending credits that the writer didn’t even bother to give an arc for Yoo Mi and Doo Hee.

Blind (Episode 1-2) - Mood: C-
Secret child experiments, links to secret forces and an (adopted?) male lead who is potentially taking revenge on those who ruined his life? Smells like a boring political conspiracy! But the inclusion of the jury as significant characters does pique my interest particularly since our female lead Eun Ki is part of it: what would her potential link to the murders be?

Little Women (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D
What will now happen to the manservant that the Great Aunt had? The writer seemed to have forgotten about him but I think that it’s characters like him and Jong Ho that will reveal their claws in the 2nd half: if they don’t, it’s then a failure on the writing. Cliffhanger’s just boring unless In Joo’s the true murderer: imagine if the Singapore trip was her escape!

Once Upon a Small Town (Episode 7-9) - Mood: D-
This just goes from bad to worse with that stupid ex-girlfriend’s sexual assault. Yes, in 2022, we still have such scenes.

Today’s Webtoon - The finale episodes tasted better than the penultimate week. At the end can I say all is well that ends well?

Good Job - Stop sidelining my Director Hong. The way he discovered the real room of contemplation🤭😉😁.
Vice Chair Kang already seemed sketchy with his unusually meek behavior. So I’m not surprised.

Her Private Life Ep 11 – The identity reveal, and the discovery of another of Lee Seol’s work. Park Jin-ju understanding both sides, Deok-mi and Eun-gi, I liked her objectivity.

Little Women - In-hye impressed me the most this week.
In-kyung needs to fight strategically. Just see how Great Aunt Oh went to ask Jae-sang to stop interfering in her company's operations whilst giving him a jab. That's the strategy In-kyung needs to employ. Too bad she's Great Aunt Oh's student but it seems like she learnt nothing from her. I hope she is forced to recognize that she needs has to implement Aunt Oh's methods to appropriately match Jae-sang's moves.
I still don't trust Do-il. And In-joo was the proverbial beautiful goat that walked into the den of wolves with her eyes and senses intact.
The investigations about The Orchid Society is really speedy and is one of the things I'm enjoying about Little Women.

To the new additions May It Please The Court and, Love in Contract. Good choices I loved that I added to my watch-list. But the red herrings had better remain as such. Asides that, they really offered the good feeling. That dream sequence in Love in Contract😅, or May It Please The Court’s neck resetting 🤭.

The Empire is the last to be added into the fold.

Once Upon a Small Town It's my happy pill of the week. No murder, no bullying, no mystery, no stress just a beautiful countryside, lovely characters and a cute bunny!

The Law Cafe I don't specially root for the FL or the ML... And it's not a Law Café, it's just a normal law office in a café.

Mental Coach Jegal The show found its "cruising speed" and I like the different characters. They balance pretty well the antics of the No Medal Club and the serious parts.

Good Job 12 episodes is still too long...

Love in Contract What a weird show with boring characters.

The Golden Spoon I'm waiting for the next episode to see how will turn the swap between the male leads.

One Dollar Lawyer It was nothing original but NGM looked good.

Little Women I need to see the sisters team up together!

Young Actors Retreat It's nice to see the different actors interact.

Once Upon a small Town: So, we are in the final home stretch with this one. Ja Young obviously likes Ji Yul and vice versa. That being said logistically speaking I get why Ja Young hasn’t said anything. Ji Yul hasn’t said he will stay, so why bother, even if their obvious crushes on each other a child is pointing out. That being said I hope they resolve it in the next episode, so we can have an episode of them being cute together.

The Law Café: I continue to enjoy every piece of this mess of a drama. Episode 5, despite the drunken antics(getting sick of those as a plot device) was one of the best episodes on consent I have ever seen in kdrama. It was really well done and you can see the writer put thought into it. As for the bullying, it boggles the mind that no adult can do anything about that child being bullied. I don’t understand, it seems to be a consistent enough problem that kdramas always point it out, and kpop/kdrama stars get in trouble for it. So for why aren’t they finding ways for punishment. I care less about how they are going to get around it. What bothers me, is that both our barista and the kid were so desperate that literally no one around them had a better solution. Jung Ho, absent completely forgetting who the boy was, just gave advice to child who was clearly about to commit a crime, and just ignored it after the fact. The boy was terrified and traumatized. The barista was also traumatized and terrified, I don’t blame them.

Good Job: So we finally get a kiss, a birth secret, preferring the useless legitimate child over the illegitimate competent child, corporate takeover, and dramatic murder mystery maybe solved. MAKJANG is that you? What happened to rom com?

If you wish upon me: FOR WHY didn’t they stick to giving wishes and orphan children. What is happening? Talk about ruining a solid drama. Also why are we suddenly acting like Seok Jun didn’t help in pimping Joon Kyung. He should be forgiven because he was always by her side. WTAF. Also her trauma is not simply going to go away because she finds out her mother died protecting her. Her obsession with Gyro Rye isn’t going to disappear because Seok Joon is still there. There was so WTF%^%ry happening in these pass two episodes. The singular bright spot was learning the kids were okay with their aunt and that they just wanted to see him. The rest of the episode was a dumpster fire of bad proportions. As for his father, I just CANNOT.

Love in contract: The first episode was iffy. The second episode is much better. That being said I don’t understand where Gwang Nam’s boyfriend keeps disappearing to. Every time he talks about moving to Canada, I’m like but what about the boo? That being said I was curious what job they would pick for Ji Ho and I landed on medical investigator/examiner. Judge was guessed and I initially agreed with that except he kept saying that every verdict he made was bad for a person, that is why he wanted to be good for Sang Eun. He doesn’t...

Little Women: They killed the most interesting character. Will this smarten the sisters, especially In-ju, up? Probably not. I do like that while she’s using the Park family to get ahead, In-hye and Hyo-rin’s friendship appears real.

Love in Contract: I’m disappointed. This could have been a fun drama with a legitimate love triangle. Instead, the storylines are unnecessarily dark and the chemistry is lacking on all fronts. I think the SML is miscast. The character is a disaster but KJY looks like PMY’s younger brother, which isn’t helping matters. I’m a bit curious about Ji-ho but otherwise don’t have the inclination to stick around. I’ve always disagreed with the “PMY is typecast” arguments, but I am finally on the bandwagon.

May it Please the Court: I liked this until the last few minutes of Episode 2. I didn’t care for the twist with Lee Kyu-hyung’s character. He was fun as an eccentric lawyer, why add vigilante to the mix. Jung Ryeo-won has played this same kind of character one too many times, but she does it well. The best parts were when the two were together.

Good Job: Finally, a kiss.

Love in Contract : 1. PMY doesn’t have a wide range of acting, 2. She is good at her range. She plays it safe in my opinion, but she is good at what she is playing. I don’t think to watch her dramas back to back will be a good idea, cause it will become tedious for the viewers since characters she potrayed were kinda the same, but if once a while you need a sugar take from all those dark dramas around, PMY’s could be a good choice.

Adamas : another korean drama with unsettled ending. I don’t see any chance of second season, I don’t understand why they gave as a cliffhanger end note. But overall, it was an quite enjoyable ride.

Good Detective 2 : at first, I thought I like season 1 more, but at last, I think I love both seasons the same. And yes, I don’t mind with season 3. I really appreciate that this one is one in million police drama with a whole squad as main protagonist.

Little Women : This one is good and I have a feeling it’ll only get better. The writer must not ruin this or I will riot.

Blind : Disappointing premiere. Honestly. I love Eun Ji but the story is just meh. Maybe too early to judge, but, I don’t think I’ll survive 6 episodes.

@stranger, Wise, thanks for the mini review. I really had been looking forward to TGD 2 and was disappointed when it was not available to US viewers when it recently aired. When GOOD JOB ends next week, I will miss the show. Finally, there was a kiss.

Every weekend I look forward to LITTLE WOMEN. The story is just too compelling and great filming.

MAY IT PLEASE THE COURT is different from what I expected, but I will definitely watch the next episode.

My interest in IF YOU WISH UPON ME is waning. But there are only 2 episodes left.

I found the first two episodes of LOVE IN CONTRACT disappointing. I thought the plot was confusing and the characters not very appealing.

When I mentioned some time ago that I would like to have Seasons of Blossom as a kdrama, I didn't know I would get my wish so soon 🙂 I was unfortunately swamped with work this week and thus planned to check just the 1st episode before sleep... and suddenly I was 4 episodes later 😁 (sleep is overrated anyway 😆 ). I like it (despite some greenish acting) and I think they are reasonably managing to capture the webtoon... only... I wish for more cuteness from Bomi and Jinyoung (and shorter Jinyoung 😁😁), they were soooo cuuuuuute in the webtoon 😍 (especially Jinyoung's red ears 😁). Hamin and Somang are perfect.

Love in Contract - completely different from what I expected. But I like it so far (especially our Policeman from Chachacha as the best friend) and I'm curious where we are heading to. So far I'm pretty sure that all those murderer hints around Jiho are just red herrings and he is either an investigator or a pathologist.

One Dollar Namgoong Min - I enjoyed the first episode. 😎 The vibe reminds me of jdramas... and Chief Kim.

Still continuing with Love Between Fairy and Devil and I finished False Colours.

Planning to check Bickering Lawyers, Golden Spoon and the new weekender. Just need to bend Time 😁

Today's Webtoon: 7.0 Finale wasn't great, just a bit better than what we waded thru to get to it.

Big Letdown Mouth: 6.5

Law Cafe: 5.5 Let's just say Lee Se-Young acting drunk is not my favorite thing. If the drunk scene in day 5 had been in day 1 I would have been gone.

Once Upon a Small Town: 6.0 Day 7 - remind me never to ask these clowns for advice on dating/romance etc. Day 8 - Pomme! Day 9... Cosmetics PPL. At least it's almost over.

Good Job: 7.0 Day 9 - overdoing the cutesy and getting repetitious, especially the 2nd leads. Day 10 - the baddies are just bad. You don't need superhero vision to see the show sliding downhill.

Love in Contract: 6.5 800,000 fancy costumes and hair styles in contract? Started ok; 2nd half of day 2 was total misfire.

May It Please the Court: 7.7

Golden Spoon: 2.5 Tip of the day, make the grim and depressing part too grim and depressing and some of us might not make it to the big turnaround.

One Dollar Lawyer: 7.5

Seeing Jung Ryeo-won & Park Min-young both start new shows on the same day reminds me -- my first complete kdrama was Princess Jamyung, with those 2 as FL and 2FL, and JRW totally acted circles around PMY. The gap has narrowed a bit, but JRW is still winning so far this time. Back to Jamyung, PMY seemed really bad. Granted she was supposed to be playing a dim bulb, but she seemed more like an actual dim bulb than a good actress portraying one. She has improved, but she's not a favorite because she will never be able erase the negative first impression.

Jamyung was good enough to make me adjust my channel surfing to watch out for other Korean shows on the cable channels that carried them, but it wasn't really "good" in an absolute sense.

TODAY’S WEBTOON (Ep.15-16) The last two episodes felt like pouring a box of sugar into a cup of coffee. Everything wrapped up too nicely. The bubbly personality of Kim Se-Jeong can hold the lead position in a light drama but to sustain that positivity to the end is a grind. It happened in BUSINESS PROPOSAL and it happened here.

I have not read the source material or the Japanese version because I believe an adaptation should stand on its own. I think there were some major choice disappointments in the script. I would have swapped out the whole artist Shin arc for more interaction with Ma-Eum’s family members. The real tension, strong personalities, banter and life decisions were there as a resource that was undeveloped to its full potential. I also think the Pomme arc got a short-circuited to by the end a mere cameo. Artist’s Na’s relationship with his girlfriend had a bright and fun beginning in tune with he first episodes comedy element, but was set aside for boring office politics.

The work place decision making, rookie over-responsibilities and secrets from superiors were the most teeth grinding things to watch with the editors’ duties to be life coach babysitters than professionals.

Any romance elements were DOA, which is fine if you were going for a slice-of-office life show. But adding broken past relationships and uber shy non-confessions did not add any character development. It was clear from the beginning that Ma-Eum was not interested in anything except work. She really viewed webtoon co-workers as colleagues and not friends which makes sense since she wanted to earn a full time position on her talent.

In the end it was an average drama with no ground breaking story lines and more than few script stumbles along the way. The open end was OK but not OK if the producer is banking on a second season.

STOCK STRUCK (Ep. 11-12) The show ended nicely. The last two episodes weaved in the analogy that stocks, like relationships, have an ebb and flow, ups and downs, and when to invest and when to sell (quit). The little investment club members learned many valuable lessons (as did the viewers) but most importantly, have a plan to attain your dreams instead of waiting for fate to hand you a bad outcome. The character actors in supporting roles were very good and the story was straight forward, easy pace and provided above average entertainment value. It was a better than I expected and I would recommend it.

GOOD JOB (Episode 9-10): The obvious villain is getting more obvious while the rom-com gets more screen time through Jin-Mo and Ha-Nee’s blooming romance. When henchmen get a flicker of conscience but does nothing about it . . . until he is trapped in a corner and betrayed by his master. The birth secret was a surprise, but it did reinforce that a rotten apple does not fall far from the tree of life. The very serious tone of the ending portends an inner strength of Se-Ra corralling the runaway emotions of Seon-Woo...

MAY IT PLEASE THE COURT: Although I'm seriously over law dramas at the moment, this one grabbed me from the first episode and smart, bickering leads are my catnip, so I'll stick around. I like that the tone and style both feel and don't feel like a kdrama, and I also appreciate that the writing is snappy. The leads are great together, too, although the ML downing the two birth control pills expecting immediate and dire side effects was ridiculous.

LAW CAFE: I really like the leads as characters and actors, and sometimes this show surprises me with its nuanced presentation of its social causes of the week, so I'm still in. It's a complete fantasy with a few realistic moments here and there, and somehow, that works for me more often than it doesn't. KSG is criminally underused right now, though. It's almost like she got sick or something happened while filming to keep her away from the set.

SEASONS OF BLOSSOMS: I, too, was mesmerized by the flashbacks, which made the present-day story less compelling. I'm confused, too, as to the age and position of the FL. How old are teachers-in-training generally? Am I supposed to be rooting for her to hook up with the younger brother with whom I see no chemistry yet?

LITTLE WOMEN: I still find this to be a cut above everything else I'm watching. It's getting a little more makjang as it unfolds, and unless there's a twist coming, I'm disappointed that the creep running for mayor and his wife appear to be such cliched villains. And a secret society of power-hungry orchard lovers is silly. And yet . . . the writing remains clever and assured, Nam Ji-hoon in particular is impressing me with her work (although all the actors are compelling), and every time I think I know where it's going it doesn't quite get there. And the death of the aunt was so shocking! So there's no way I won't watch this all the way through.

I'm behind on Good Job, but will get back to it. Not sure about Small Town. I liked it ok, and sounds like we're just getting to the good stuff, but I haven't felt compelled to press play again yet.

Love in Contract: Intriguing, but it's one of those rom-com/black comedy/thriller mashups that sort of give you tonal whiplash. It sort of starts where the middle of a series would usually start for a rom-com, so you're wondering what the heck is going on. I like the roommate pairing of the FL and her friend and the pairing of the two MLs (nosy neighbor 2ML + extremely private ML is a great combo). Seems like the ML is a hitman?

It's Beautiful Now: Started it. The elders are all a complete delight and so is the friendship between Hyun-jae and Hae-joon. Unfortunately, I found the FL and her storyline a drag to watch.

I keep starting new cdramas..this week, I finally picked up
Love and Redemption (ep 1-9). Loving it. The fight/magic scenes are top notch, exciting, and visually stunning in their composition (despite some of them looking like it used older CGI tech) and they delivered such exciting scenes multiple times an episode. I get why people went crazy for Cheng Yi after it.

And it was ok.
Was it fun ? not really. Would I do it again ? I do not see the need.

Along with the premiere of Love in Contract (crazy but I’m here for it), I watched the Japanese show Fight Song, also a contract relationship. I highly recommend it. The characters actually felt like real people, and the story was as much about the FL dealing with a new health diagnosis (non terminal) as the romance. Resolving the romantic part was part of that process. Also, there is the most wonderful created family of adults, who sit around a bonfire at night and hang out. I so wanted to hang out with them. There is a bit of FL being a ( stubborn) noble idiot, and orphanage plot, but it’s done so well I didn’t mind.

My wife and I really like GOOD JOB, but episode eight had some serious plot problems. Like failing to call the police.

We are also loving ONCE UPON A SMALL TOWN.

We also like LAW CAFE not for the legal cases but the romance and in particular the two lead characters. It is a good sign when the first kiss occurs at the end of episode four. None of this wait until the drama is half over stuff.

Last weekend was the finale of the weekender IT'S BEAUTIFUL NOW, which I was finally able to watch on Viki. It was a decent show from beginning to end but not among my all-time favorites. I have said before that K-drama writers need a good editor, and this show was a case in point: The pacing was frequently off, and unnecessary digressions wasted time, like the story arc with Mi-rae’s greedy aunt who added zero to the basic story and was simply a timewaster. That timewaster should have been eliminated at the story board stage. A little judicious pruning would have resulted in better pacing and we could have seen a better, completer and more convincing story arc for the re-union of Soojae and Yoona.

The new weekender starts this weekend and will be available on Viki as THREE BOLD SIBLINGS.

My wife took time out from watching her beloved Chinese Costume dramas to watch WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING. She liked it. She has also really loved LITTLE WOMEN.

My wife’s favorite Chinese actress is Dilmurat Dilraba (or Ms. Beautiful per my wife). She finally got around to binge watching LOVE DESIGNER and enjoyed it, although she did find it a bit longer than necessary.

I continue to enjoy OJAKKYO BROTHERS.

I have also been enjoying a few more episodes of the J-drama MARRY ME, a wonderfully gentle story about love and family.

I am now six episodes into the C-drama CUTE PROGRAMMER. Nothing earthshaking but still pretty good.

This weekend my wife and I will start watching LOVE IN CONTRACT and also catch up on other shows.

I agree. The only caveats are the drama's frustrating treatment of Africa as a monolith (ML went to volunteer in a village in one of the African countries, but they never say which one...just "Africa"...at least the props dept had the sense to put Zambia on one of the props) and there was a tiny blip one week when it went a little dark, but overall, it was a light, enjoyable watch. They had a true ensemble cast and multiple likable couples that got generous screen times, which is the sort of thing that I love. And the drama had many combinations of fun character interactions which really made the show refreshing.

It took a few episodes of MENAL COACH for me to get on board, but now I am in. I like the no medals club - there must be scores of good athletes who never got the recognition they deserved, but still suffer all the physical pains received during their training. All the bullying is a bit tiresome, but then I remembered the headlines about the Russian figure skaters at the Winter Olympics and the coaching methods there.

GOOD JOB is doing what the other rom coms are not - light entertaining with a really cute couple.

LAW CAFE seems to be settling down into something watchable. The 'consent' arc and FL's embarrassment was done well.

Still on the fence with LOVE IN CONTRACT. I liked the cooking scenes (washing up not included in the contract!!) and the cat who hisses at its owner, but otherwise PMY is just doing the catwalk, showing off one stylish outfit after the other, but not much more. She has been doing this a lot in her recent dramas which is a bit disappointing - she can do much better.

Did not yet watch the second episode of BLIND, it was just a touch too gruesome, especially with the young boys at the start. Will maybe pick up again later.

Really enjoying NARCO SAINTS, also gruesome, but the dialogues are so good!

Vey sorry about the death of bad ass auntie in LITTLE WOMEN. The youngest sister might actually be a match for the horrible parents, she is a pretty tough nut and does not show her cards as openly as the middle sister or as naively as the oldest sister.

Lots of new shows to start, will take it slowly.

I really like the Amy character, too (I'm sorry I can't remember the Korean character names; they're Meg, Jo, Laurie, Amy, and Aunt March to me instead, lol). Of the three sisters, she's the most emotionally self-contained which is ironic, of course, because she's the youngest and theoretically the most immature. I also like that she and the daughter are true friends--that's one relationship I thought I had pegged as a rivalry, but it's not like that at all.

I finished two shows last weekends, and I wasn’t satisfied with both endings…
Today’s Webtoon Final
So all the artists stories were wrapped up nicely and positively, I loved the scenes with baby Mandu! And they are off to a bright future together, as expected. But what’s with the romance? Show just left us hanging in the air, I found that disappointing. It was hard to imagine that this clueless person is the same Kim Se Jeong from Business Proposal… which speaks for her acting, of course.
Big Mouth Final
Another set of twists and turns leave us with a good Big Mouse. The drama had been really great at keeping us guessing, up until Ep. 12 it was fantastic. LJS was wonderful, I had liked him at the beginning of my drama-watching career, found him just so-so later, here it was a joy to watch him acting. The reveal was underwhelming (I thought it was a fake for some time) and the show just wasn’t as gripping as before, and Big Mouse being this huge secret wasn’t convincing anymore. But the ending: I don’t even mind the tragic ending. But wrapping everything up in the last 12 minutes? Mi Ho being fine, walking around, being on TV and the next minute peacefully breathing her last breath? Choi Do Ha swimming in contaminated water (how did you get that there???), spitting blood and dying on the spot? This was so rushed that it spoiled my enjoyment and my perception of the whole drama, such a shame…
Tell me Your Wish (Ep. 14)
I loved the storyline of the grandma and her grandchildren and how her death was portrayed beautifully, also how Gyo Re panicked for the sake of the children. But then, I was scared of watching Ep.14. Why is everyone so scared of Gyo Re’s father but doing nothing about him? Of course they could have called the police, or at least talked among themselves about how to handle him. Instead, they all panic on their own… So we get a mafia showdown at the hospice – I hope this is handled swiftly in the next episode and we can get back to granting wishes.
Good Job
Looking forward to this every week!
Law Café
Also love this show! Hooray for an easy to watch, funny, romantic show every Monday.
Little Women
Is it okay if I watch this for the sets, the cinematography, Kim Go Eun and Wi Ha Joon?
Blind (Ep.2)
After half of the first episode I really questioned why Jung Eun Ji and Taecyon had chosen this drama. The violence and terror against children was almost unbearable to watch. Later I realized that nothing was actually shown, but the feelings were intense. So, the setup was painful, but the thriller starts to be fascinating.
Youth MT Ep.3
So fun to watch! I didn’t know I needed this, but it’s really entertaining.

Today, my friend and I will finish watching Tale of The Nine Tailed, just in time to start Golden Spoon directly afterwards, looking forward to Sung Jae! And, having finished the fantastic Taxi Driver, our next parallel watching project is Her Private Life. I thought I was tired of PMY in romantic comedies,...

Good Job: Too much plot, not enough caper-ing or costumes this week, but that was inevitable if they have to wrap this up next week. It’s still a fun watch.

Love In Contract: Now genuinely hoping this goes the “so bad it’s good” route.

Search Query: WWW: Part of my usual diet of 1-2 current dramas plus one older/classic at a time. I like the treatment of workplace issues, but the main couple is dull (except for the ep. 12 kiss in the office kitchen, holy hell that was hot). I’m also relieved to find that the treatment of adoption is less terrible than in most dramas. It’s really fun to read the recaps and beanie speculation from the first several episodes when no one here knew yet who Lee Jae-wook was. His drama-within-a-drama is indeed THE BEST.

If You Wish Upon Me: I dipped into the first episode and hopped back out. I can't stand gangster plots.

Planning to start One Dollar Lawyer, with maybe Jealousy Incarnate as my next oldie.

Start off the week with The Law Cafe. Middle of the week is Good Job and the weekend is Blind, Little Women, One Dollar Lawyer, and The Golden Spoon.

Oh, One Dollar Lawyer is the one that was just a fun time for me right out the gate. I love the credits, I like the lead character, and I look forward to the dynamics in store.

The Law Cafe is what I look forward to to start the week. For its flaws, I'm always waiting to see how Yuri and Jung Ho will resolve whatever issue or how Jung Ho will ridiculously try to cover his feeling while simultaneously being so obvious about them. He really is king of the mixed signals. And as always I love Yuri haha.

The Golden Spoon, I like it; I don't mind it but I also feel like it could get wonky and confusing especially if they're going to be doing love triangles.

Blind is... I know there's probably a better, more adequate word but I'm blanking on everything except weird haha. It's weird because I feel like it's predictable yet I have no clue what's actually happening haha
I feel like I should feel sympathy for the victims but then a part of me gets why they were chosen but at the same time, they were just innocent victims. I think the lead character is fun to watch.

30 but 17 - binged it over the weekend after reading the Jennifer-scene stealer discussion at another DB thread.

What a sweet and lovely show! Love that household to bits from the two brothers to their rowing friends and work mates, Jennifer and our female lead. I need some diversion from RL stress and this drama did the trick and more. Recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who hasn’t watched it yet.

Shin Hye-sun is seriously the actress of her generation. This drama just shows without a doubt only she can do Mr Queen - delivering both drama and comedy without losing a beat. Yang Se-Jong, despite a relatively short acting resume, can play nuance well. Looking forward to his post-military projects. Finally, Ahn Hyo-seop, he’s absolutely winning as the younger brother here but why his look is so different in Business Proposal. Did he fix his teeth or something? He looks not much different in this drama from the My Father Is Strange days but hardly resembling his Chaebol character in BP.

AHS gaining his weight and body mass since LoRS. Perhaps this is why he looks more mascular compared his previous work. Is just my speculation since I haven't get any chance to see his previous work apart from LoRS and BP.

Ahn Hyo Seop was quite young in 30 but 17 drama around 22 years and he was very lean then, so he seems quite different in his recent Business proposal drama.

I have watched all of his works since Queen of the rings short drama. The guy has come so far and feel so proud to see him with big roles.

Shin Hye-sun is one of my favorite actresses for a reason. For serious proof of her abilities watch ANGEL'S LAST MISSION where she turned a fundamentally flawed script into a very watchable show- and pulled a good performance out of M to do it.

My first SHin Hye-sun drama is Oh My Ghost as Cho Jung-suk’s younger sister on a wheelchair. Then, it’s Five Children in which she and Sung Hoon make the most adorable couple. But it is her turn as a determined but stubborn prosecutor to clear her father’s name in Forest of Secrets (Stranger) that marks her acting credence and versatile range. By the time of Mr Queen, I am a loyal follower.

Watched the last episodes of Adamas and Big mouth yesterday.
I swear both dramas really left me heartbroken and frustrating until the very end. Both dramas just had a kind of open ending where there was no proper closure to many subplots and there is very unlikely chance of both of these getting a second season, so the ending left be quite flabbergasted and angry.

1. ADAMAS- The show was intense to the next level. I wanted SIH to be ahead of Ares/Haesong more of the times, but some scenes were so frustrating to watch. They just barely got by. The drama started with so much mystery, so much power and had the potential to be even better, but the 2nd half of the season, it just went too much. Despite this, there were some very powerful scenes which just had me applauding , like Taesung pulling the trigger on chairman, Ms.Kwon stabbing the chairman to death, the last encounter between the twins and their biological dad etc. The whole cast was phenmonenal in their acting and that is the real saving grace of this drama. Such stellar cast. I wish we can get a season 2 because the ending is quite intriguing. So sad to see some baddies still alive, like Mr.Lee and Sun, quite hard to digest this.

2.BIGMOUTH - This drama was even worse. I was expecting Mi Ho to live and Changho to be dead at the end, as she really played a huge role in bringing out the truth, but it was quite unexpected that he still lived and continued to be Big mouse til the end. I felt so much injustice has been done to people in the drama, but there was little to no action of grand justice served to the real bad ones. Poor Hyejin died such wrongful death yet her husband was not charged for this. Even though they showed the ending of these 3 put into jail, there might be ways of them to weasel out with most backstabbing person Gong Ji Hoon who knows. Also, the innocent death row inmate died an even more unfair death. Once the identity of BM was found, the story really went more downhill.

Little Women - the writing is not as sharp as I expected from Mother screenwriter. Eldest sister has inconsistent characterisation (is she silly? is she ditzy? or purposefully vengeful? No idea). Middle sister character is consistent but I find her too self righteous. Wi Ha Jun acting is decent but he can’t pull off a complex character, so I don’t get a frisson of fear/excitement from his scenes, just…flat. The only 2 compelling characters are Great aunt (sigh but she died) and politician wife. The directing is good and the acting mostly top notch. I’ll continue watching since it’s just 12 eps

Golden Spoon - I was curious on netizens positive buzz, so decided to check this out. First 2 episodes were better than I expected. I normally steer clear of casting led by idols popularity but it’s darker than I expected. I watched ep 1 and thought - very good but will it fall apart on ep2? But ep2 was well fleshed out too. Let’s see,

Mother is a awesome drama. The original author is Japanese writer, Yuji Sakamoto.

The Korean adaption was pretty close to the original. Both versions are excellent, especially the child actresses, Mana Ashida and Heo Yool.

Another drama by Yuji Sakamoto is Women: My Life For My Children , for lighter fare he has Matrimonial Chaos, which also had a Korean remake, sadly, I can’t recommend it.

I was surprised to see Mother has 6 international remakes, China, Spain, France, South Korea,Thailand and Turkey.
I may try some of those if I can find them.

I have the same feeling about Wi Ha Joon’s acting, and actually posted a comment about that in the latest episode recap but then I deleted it (I wrote “it’s good acting but not stellar acting”), because I then thought maybe he’s never meant to be the bad guy but just has to act like one, then WHJ’s portrayal is understandable. Anyway, his facial expressions got better in episode 7 and 8.

I got so much actual korean thing going on with studying, library club and being intermediator that I dont feellike kdramas. I started watching Doctor Who instead and like, I want a series like that in Korea. All the characters live too shortly, but if it was 1 character played by different people it could work out.
I loved Matt Smith, a lot, but Peter Capaldi episodes are so well written and so hilarious, that there is buckwheat coming out of my nose.

Today’s webtoon (16): Goodbye show. It wasn’t the best show but I still enjoyed it a lot. I was happy that they left the romance open ended. Just like someone mentioned, I am going to take home Dong Hee’s words “ Just because I’ve woken up from a dream doesn’t mean I can’t dream again tomorrow”. The characters had their growth though I am most disappointed with the way the drama handled Artist shin’s trauma.

Good job (7-9): Loving everything about the show. Yet to watch ep 10.

Mental coach (3-4): Sad to see the extent of physical abuse in sports. This week’s episodes were good and Ga Eul’s skating scenes give me an adrenaline rush. Waiting to see how our coach FL tackles all the villains. Coach Oh’s smug was so annoying to watch that I felt like shoving a stick on his face…

Little women (7-8): The end !! Wow !!! This is the first time I liked In joo in the series. Its getting more dark and interesting now.

May it please the court (1-2): Another lawyer show but I liked it so far. FL is good and I wonder if the ML is actually a killer or its just a red herring.

Season of Blossoms (1-4): Liking it so far

Love in contract (1-2): Its okay but one more week to decide if I should invest my time in it. May be it can be my background drama once I finish marriage contract.

Golden spoon (1-2): Among the shows that premiered this week, I liked this one most. Mostly for the fact that it made me anxious for the next episode. The actors are doing a good job and the president is more dangerous than he looks. I liked how the ML seem more like a morally grey character. I wonder who will he be paired up with. Juhee or the other girl??

OLDER

Dear M (1-12): It was a light watch except for Ro sa. Its sad that she never came out of the villain shell. It might not be the best college drama but it was a good watch. Jae hyun’s acting was better than I expected.

Marriage contract (6-10): The separation trope started and the pace is slow. Past ep 5 I think I started enjoying it than the initial episodes. The dad is annoying and its so frustrating how he is jumping to conclusions.

Love in Contract - Instead of making me laugh, I feel like question marks started coming out of my head as confusion kept settling in. Not even the debt aka backstory made sense. The roommate and Jamie the Cat may be the only positive standouts.

Mental Coach Jegal - Don't want my expectations to get a run on me, but it feels like its been ages since I found myself sucked into a show. Hoping more karma comes to kick Coach Oh in both shins!

I’m bummed that the rom-coms airing are not pulling me in at all. Tried two eps of the vet story but nope. One eps of Love in Contract, kinda mehh..maybe i’ll give ep 2 a try later. Watched some clips of Law Cafe, not really that keen either.

Now i have on my to check out list,

Same on the rom com front. Nothing looks interesting for checking out for me. I know SK can do good rom coms, so I totally don’t understand why they don’t do it anymore, or do it properly like they once did. It seems like every show tries so hard to be complex and exciting all the time, but for me, just a simply good rom com that stays true to its genre is more than good enough..

I watched Young Actors’s Retreat and liked it a lot! Have you watched that one? I’m not sure if it’s better for binging all at once though.. cause now I’m suffering from waiting for its next ep and they only drop one each week. 😥

The only drama I’m looking forward to now is the one starring Ha Ji-won and Kang Ha-neul that is supposed to be aired sometime in October. Show, please be good!!!

I know right! Maybe rom com gets this bad rep so they’re trying to make it complex to be interesting. Honestly just Gimme a Business Proposal-ish drama n i’m a happy viewer.

I’m watching clips of YAR, planning to binge it later. Also looking forward to HJW n KHN drama, n there’s this romance k-movie coming out on Netflix soon starring Kim Yoo Jung.

Right. Also I’m looking forward to watching Sad Tropics starring BB. Haven’t heard of its release yet. My mom asked me about BB a while back, and I told her it was almost a year already that he disappeared from K ent.

Netflix Germany is only releasing Alchemy of Souls slowly, so it's still a current watch for us.
Life is still interfering and taking time out of my viewing schedule. Consequently, except the very short and very absurd cdrama Maid's revenge that made me laught for all the exclamation about ML (that is not so above better looking than the sea of beautiful oppas... he has large shoulders and a well defined 8 pack... I suppose the cocktail of he+the role+the cinematography was just right to excite the interest)
I had a cold this weekend, and settled on Once we get married as easy and fluffy watch. I'm on ep 16 and the MC has had more accidental than deliberate kisses, so it has delivered.
Love in contact on the contrary has not delivered the fun that I was expecting from a romcom. The silent ML to silence all silent ML is the first ML that is not presented sympatically. Aren't we supposed to feel something for him (other than beeing puzzled by his job) ?

There’s quiet and then there’s quiet right? 🤣 i find it hard to believe they’ve been meeting 3x weekly for 5 years and they still haven’t passed the very formal stranger-ish stage. Also wonder what’s the need for rings when they meet alone in his house.
