The first two hits of 2023, both lead by acclaimed veteran actresses, but worlds apart in terms of genre and Style.

Jeon Do-yeon is one of my all time faves, very happy to see her back on screen and in something cute, light and funny.

Lee Bo-young made her big comeback 11 years ago and she's been cranking out hits ever since, talk about consistency!

Dramas headlined by veteran actor and actresses are doing really well. Especially in the romcom genre, where it doesn't go beyond 5-7%.

It appears that both BRAIN WORKS and TROLLEY were pre-empted?

THREE BOLD SIBLINGS is finally gaining some traction, there was certainly more happening in this week's episodes. Perhaps some of the regular weekender crowd is coming back. The writer of the show has done some good work in the past and there are times when we see good examples of that talent in this show,

But the big surprise is the big numbers for CRASH COURSE IN ROMANCE.

Since Crash Course in Romance, which I'm very much enjoying, is nonetheless nothing original--a standard Korean rom-com, replete with a sinister subplot--the audience numbers must be a tribute to the two leads, who really are a pleasure to watch, especially in their scenes together. As @soyesterday says, I'm always happy to see veteran actresses at work. But WHY can't we see Agency here in the U.S., unless we are willing to brave the porn ads of illegal sites? Yet one more argument for an omnibus kdrama streaming service (not that it will ever happen!)

AdBlock works.

Thanks, I'll give it a try for this show. Not that it matters, but I want to publicly stress that I'm quite willing to pay for legitimate streaming access. But since I'm prevented from doing so with this show, and others, I'm forced to resort to these methods.

Of course, in the old days, I'd read about a limited release film that wasn't available to me and wouldn't be exercised about it--I'd write its title down for the future, when it might be available in the local second-run "art" movie theater, or later, be rentable as a DVD. Now I get really irritated: I want it NOW.

i used to subscribe to Hulu, then Viki, then DramaFever, now Netflix - but their offerings are sparse, and they are loading old dramas that weren't necessarily very good... so i still do basic Netflix, but i gotta have access to the others - and because of the plethora of cable networks running out of South Korea now, some dramas don't get loaded at all...

i'm on a mac, but i still use AdBlock and AdBlock Plus. it helps rid the nastygram popups and vile ads.

also, beware... not all d****c*** sites are "safe". i use the "dubyadubyadubya1 d*c* dot cr" one... good luck.

oh, i forgot the dot between the 1 and d***....

Completely agreed on the willingness to pay for legitimate content providers. I've even been checking the websites of the actual Korean TV networks to see if they're making this content available on their own websites.

@hacja I feel for you re an omnibus kdrama streaming service. All I can say is that if I was Bill Gates that service would already be up and running with the name DramaFever 2. No original programming only licensing of dramas. Alas unless I hit a big payoff lottery it won’t be happening.

For personal reasons several years ago now I forswore patronizing ‘alternate’ streaming sites (as I called them) or the dark side. The practical effect of that was to leave me in a holding pattern at episode 42 (of 50) of the great sageuk KBS’s JEONG JO JEON (2014). It is by far the longest kdrama I attempted and I would love to finish it legally someday lol.

Isn't that a theme of the Star War's trilogy? I seem to remember Emperor Palpatine whispering in Luke's ear "Join the dark side, and find out what happened in all the long running kdramas you never finished. You can even use the Force to skip a few episodes...muahahaha."

I also try to stay away from the Dark Side.

Crash Course in Romance has themes that resonate with the Korean audiences, such as a cut-throat education system, stressful academic system. Plus, it doesn't stand alone as a romcom, it has a murder mystery and a warm and touching family. On top of that, two of its main cast are veteran actors that are very much beloved by Koreans, playing an older couple, thus it makes different from your usual romcom that features twenty-something actors in a office/chaebol-based romcoms

Simple, Crash Course in Romance features a main couple, that isn't in their twenties or a couple who fall in love in the office. Plus, these are characters that we can identify with. The ordinary Joe and Jane. Bonus: The two actors are veteran and well-respected actors in Korea. Not your usual idols and twenty-something actors

Its such a treat to watch Jeon Do-yeon in this genre. She is still amazing as ever, regardless of ratings or whatever she is given to work with. Hail to the Queen!!!

She acted in Lovers in Prague before in 2005, which is a rom-com genre. It is nothing new for this amazing actress

So happy for Crash Course in Romance's rising numbers! It is totally bringing the COM in ROM COM! The humor has been good and not cringey or overdone. Body gags, one-liners, facial expressions! All of this has been fun and funny to watch. :)

Ouch, Kkokdu is not doing good... Well, it's expected given how fast, overpacked and overall crazy the first week was. Hope next ones will have a more even tone so more people tune in.

I'm still shocked that this wasn't meet with a backlash in SK tbh. Isn't it a very real (tho probably unintended) jab at korean language and naming tradition? Sadly, leads popularity - or lack of thereof - might be the reason why no one except us really cares(((

Despite being a huge fan of the male lead after Queen and CLOY, this just does not appeal, the FL is just too silly. I nearly got to the end of the first episode. I will follow the comments here and see if it improves.

He's most likely to have another drama soon (well, sooner than few years from now, maybe even later in 2023) so if this one ends up not working for you just wait a bit for the next one.
