News bites: January 14, 2023

  • Seo In-gook (Cafe Minamdang) and Park So-dam (Record of Youth) are being paired for JTBC’s new fantasy Death’s Game. The webtoon adaptation will have an episodic format with Seo playing the main version of his character. The current plan is to have around eight other actors to portray his reincarnations throughout the drama. [Maeil Kyungje]

  • MBC confirmed that Namgoong Min (One Dollar Lawyer) and Ahn Eun-jin (The One and Only) have been signed for their upcoming sageuk Lovers. The Joseon-era romance will be airing towards the end of the year with scripts by Hwang Jin-young (Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People) and PD Kim Sung-yong (The Veil) at the helm. [MBC]

  • It’s a busy year for Ahn Eun-jin, who will also be starring in JTBC’s Bad Mom alongside Ra Mi-ran (Dr. Park’s Clinic) and Lee Do-hyun (The Glory). Releasing in the early half of 2023, the heartwarming comedy will have directing by PD Shin Na-yeon (Beyond Evil) and screenwriter Bae Se-young (Life Is Beautiful) penning the scripts. [JTBC]
  • Kim Jung-hyun (Mr. Queen) is already reviewing offers for his next drama and one contender is Second Favorite Person (roughly translated). In the meantime, a grim Kim will be reaping our screens starting January 27 in MBC’s fantasy Kokdu: Season of Deity. [Xports News]

  • There’s little time to rest between projects for Chae Jong-hyeop (Unlock the Boss) as well, who is now in talks to join Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) in Desert Island Diva. With production led by writer Park Hye-ryun (Start-Up) and PD Oh Choong-hwan (Big Mouth), filming will be commencing soon once casting has been finalized. [Sports Chosun]
  • WEi’s Kim Yo-han (School 2021) is on the casting table for The Sense, potentially joining Han Ye-ri (Hometown). Directed by PD Lee Jung-heum (Inspector Koo), the supernatural drama is still in the planning stages and the broadcaster has not yet been announced. [JTBC]
  • New stills have been released for tvN’s Our Blooming Youth, featuring our tragic hero Park Hyung-shik (Sountrack #1) as well as our brave heroine Jeon So-ni (Dr. Brain). The sageuk romance premieres next month on February 6, in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [News1 (1), (2)]

I want SIG to play every one of his reincarnations but alas. What a waste. Sigh.
And, once an actor catches ‘fire’, they seem to be everywhere. Exhibit one: Chae Jonghyop. Reminds me of how a few years ago, seemingly a movie couldn’t be made without Jessica Chastain being cast in it.

But luckily Jessica is deserving, unlike many of her overrated peers.

how did he even catch "fire"? all of his dramas had extremely low ratings. I like him but it is surprising that he still gets main lead roles.

I think it started with Nevertheless. Potato Boy became popular as a second lead and its been lead roles since. Love All Play > Unlock My Boss > Is it A Coincidence > Desert Island Diva. I’m surprised how he managed those major lead roles opposite Kim So Hyun and Park Eun Bin. Not that I’m complaining since he absolutely deserves it. Hope his upcoming dramas hit big.

Good for Ahn Eunjin. Loved her in Possessed and Hospital Playlist.

I read Death’s Game and it was an extremely frustrating experiences. I read till the end, it was like a car crash that you don't want to watch but can not take your eyes off. I hated the main lead, I hated the death and I hated the plot. Everything about that webtoon was unlikable and at its core it was extremely hopeless.

At this point, I am convinced SIG is hell bent on choosing dramas I would not like.

Lol, with all that said, do you plan on watching DEATH’s GAME?
Maybe take a peak?

1. Will watch SIG in anything even if it is trash, and he has had stinkers. I also happen to enjoy PSD.

2. NGM and AEJ, what an unexpected pairing. Will watch.

3. AEJ and RMR, will try.

4. KJH, he disappears, gets super busy, and then disappears again.

5.CJH has one of the best smiles in dramaland. Plus PEB, who will say no to that. Plus the premise somewhat reminds me of Shopping King Louis, in that one lead doesn't know anything, so the other lead has to take care of her.

I love Park Eun Bin. I love Chae Jong Hyeop. I love Park Hye Ryun. And 3 of them potentially in one drama. I must be careful I don’t want to jinx it.

No. 1. I wish SIG and PSD all the luck with DEATH’S GAME. With the right casting it might be an opportunity for some unknown actors to shine.

I hope SIG’s sageuk HANDWRITTEN (based on the novel of the same title) is still in the works. I can’t find out too much about HANDWRITTEN but I have seen it described as a sort of THE BOURNE IDENTITY set in JOSEON with SIG taking the Jason Bourne character.

No. 2. I am also looking forward to NGM and AEJ in the sageuk LOVERS.
NO. 7. OUR BLOOMING YOUTH is on Viki US’s “ Coming Soon” list so no availability angst and I will definitely be there.
It looks like 2023 will be a fairly good year for fusion type sageuks rather than straight historical sageuks like last year’s KING OF TEARS.

1. Seo In-gook AND Park So-dam?? Sign me up. The rotating list of actors can be interesting, but can the other incarnations keep up with SIG? I’d have him play every version, but with slight changes; however, I recognize that’s my fangirl brain speaking.

2. Namgoong Min and Ahn Eun-jin casting news can only be a good thing. While a part me will always grumble about the oversaturation of Joseon-set sageuks, there’s no way I’m missing this one. Namgoong Min back in his romance era!

3. As much as I want to cheer for Ahn Eun-jin and Lee Do-hyun, my real excitement is for the collaboration of Ra Mi-ran and Beyond Evil PD Shin Na-yeon. Now that’s a power duo.

4. It’s good to see him be so in demand. Kim Jung-hyun’s incredibly talented and it was a damn shame that ‘scandal’ hit him right as his popularity was soaring. I hope he gets that momentum back.

5. The writing will piss me off a hundred different ways, but man that will have some top notch acting with gorgeous visuals to match.

6. Kim Yo-han has yet to impress me in any of his dramas, so to see him keep getting high-profile roles is a bit baffling. Especially alongside an actress as prestigious as Han Ye-ri. Maybe he’ll finally break out of his bad acting shell? I certainly hope so because his stiffness and general lack of facial movement is unbearable.

7. I really want this to be good and more entirely carried by its YA vibes. Please have a good story!

*more THAN. it’s “more than entirely carried by its YA vibes.” Of course I noticed my typo immediately after I clicked post.

The moments after I noticed the mistake, but there was no way to stop the post from publishing was excruciating.

Darned typos. Super relatable. I really can't stand it when I make mistakes that I only catch after hitting send it publish. I wish Dramabeans had an edit button.

It would be nice to see Park So-dam again. Death's Game was offered to Kang Ha-neul. I guess he passed on it. I'm not familiar with the webtoon but the storyline sounds like Netflix's Russian Doll. It sounds interesting, though.

1 - Seo Inguk has no luck whatsoever with fantasy dramas, so I'd rather see him doing something else. Esp with 7 more actors for the same role - good luck with making viewers care, because I really doubt such format would work in a drama AT ALL.

4 - would've been better if we know at least something about this drama offer other than just the fact that it was made, but anyway I'm so happy that he keeps getting scripts again (and his long-awaited comeback show didn't even air yet).

5 - absurd premise was fun initially, but actor does nothing for me and I could never fathom what people like about this writer.

7 - so that annoying arrow did cause some real harm after all. This particular pics would've stir WAY more interest if he was shirtless btw - what a missed opportunity))) Another very pretty hanbok on FL. She doesn't look all that convincing as a boy, but then again, when k-actresses did...
