News bites: March 1, 2023

Chun Woo-hee, Kim Dong-wook

  • Casting has been confirmed for Chun Woo-hee (Be Melodramatic) and Kim Dong-wook (King of Pigs) in tvN’s new series Beneficial Fraud. With Chun playing a notorious con artist and Kim her sympathetic lawyer, the drama is currently slated for the Monday-Tuesday slot, premiering on May 29. Production is being led by writer Han Woo-joo and PD Lee Soo-hyun (Shooting Stars), who worked with Kim previously on Find Me in Your Memory. [News1]

  • Speaking of the busy Chun Woo-hee, the actress is also fielding an offer for the fantasy romance Although I Am Not a Hero, where she may be paired with Jang Ki-yong (Now We Are Breaking Up). Production is still in the planning stages with scripts by Joo Hwa-mi (Welcome, Introverted Boss) and PD Jo Hyun-tak (Snowdrop, SKY Castle) at the helm. [Star News]

  • Beckoning spring with blue skies and pretty pastel hanboks, SBS’s The Secret Romantic Guest House has released a new poster featuring our main quartet: Shin Ye-eun (The Glory), Ryeoun (Through the Darkness), Kang Hoon (Little Women), and Jung Geon-joo (Kiss Sixth Sense). The sageuk romance will be fluttering to our screens on March 20. [My Daily]
  • Over on KBS, promos have started trickling in for their next weekender The Real Deal Has Come and the newest poster features the leads, Baek Jin-hee (Happy to Die) and Ahn Jae-hyun (People With Flaws). With the tagline claiming that the baby is indeed theirs, the tropes are aplenty with a soon-to-be single mom, contract relationships, and the usual but fun family shenanigans. The family drama launches this month on March 25. [News1]

  • After teasing its Q2 slate what feels like forever ago, Netflix has dropped a teaser poster for Black Knight, with the completely unhelpful information: Coming Soon. The dystopic sci-fi series stars Kim Woo-bin (Our Blues), Song Seung-heon (Voice 4), Kang Yoo-seok (Payback) and Esom (Taxi Driver), and puts us in a world with no air, where delivery drivers risk their lives to get people the things they need to survive. [Xportsnews]
  • Casting continues for MBC’s upcoming sageuk Flower That Blooms at Night with Lee Ki-woo (Agency) now joining the lineup. Also starring Honey Lee (One the Woman) and Lee Jong-won (The Golden Spoon), the investigative comedy will be co-directed by PD Jang Tae-yoo (Lovers of the Red Sky, Hyena) and PD Choi Jung-in (On the Verge of Insanity), along with Lee Saem and Jung Myung-in penning the scripts. [Star News]
  • A new batch of posters have dropped for KBS’s Oasis, showcasing our angst-ridden trio: Jang Dong-yoon (Search), Seol In-ah (Business Proposal), and Choo Young-woo (Once Upon a Small Town). Written by Jung Hyung-soo (Kye Baek, Damo) with PD Han Hee (Goodbye Mr. Black, Empress Ki) directing, the period romance unfolds next week on March 6. [Newsen (1), (2)]

I wish KBS released its dramas! Kim Dong-wook's Run Into You should have been released already but they pushed it in May >_<

1. Oh! So he's actually her sympathetic lawyer🤣🤣🤣. This better have some comedy sprinkled abundantly in.

6. Lee Ki-woo. Owkay....

7. Seol In-ah is gorgeous in that dress.
Would they start at the timeline where the leads are looking like this😁?

3 - well, for one this poster succeeded in highlighting the personalities difference between FL's 3 suitors... Not that I'm going it watch it anyway)))

5 - even cooler poster here, but "World without air", really? Not with the terribly polluted one, but like totally without it? Hmmm... science isn't my forte but that sounds like a huge stretch. And wtf, Netflix, just give us a date or shut up for the time being!

7 - finally lead guys don't look like they're from anti-shower cult! And JDY has a decent hairstyle! Hell, everyone looks really good and that group poster has cool vibes to it. Suddenly show became much more tempting altogether...

I'll watch Oasis (gives me Girls Generation 1979 vibes) and Secret Romantic Guest House.
Probably when both are finished. I hope they are good :)

1. Love Chun Woo Hee, so very excited for this.
2. JKY's comeback, if CWH is in it, I will definitely check it out.
3. Still contemplating this
5. Excited for this.
6. Honey Lee is always a riot, so this will be fun.
7. Oasis looks angsty. Everytime I see JDY, I think wow he is so young, and then remember he is nearly 30, lol.

That is a great poster for No. 7 OASIS. The real life ages from top to bottom: 23, 27 and 30.It will be interesting to see what ages the writer makes the characters.

I'm happy to see one of Chungmuro's indie darlings with a well balance film and drama career. Chun Woo-hee and Kim Dong-wook ❤️.

world without air means also no water, no plants, no animals, and also no chance of starting the car unless it runs on nuclear. but since air collect warmth and without it the temperature would drop to something like -200, it is impossible to even get to a car. they havent really consulted a scientist on this? or is it a new type of machinery that can start in -200?
also, without athmosphere, we would constantly be bombed with meteorocks, asteroids etc. the constant shockwaves would even flattern Everest. we´d be a flat dry planet in the mercy of cosmic radiation, and it is impossible for any life to exist. Eeven if people built a fortress that is unpenetrable buy cosmic rays, and sun radiation, then going outside you´d die of radiation in 3 minutes.

Science fiction can quickly to science failure without proper world building.

I haven't been following the teasers too closely, but if Guest House can leave the place politics behind and have more of a slice of life vibe, it could make for a fun watch. Even if reverse harems are generally not my thing. Though I'm willing to bet imaginary money that at least one of our trio will be a secret heir to the throne or some such... Let's hope I'm wrong!

Still, I'm excited that between this and Joseon Lawyer, plus Flower that Blooms at Night, I'll have plenty of Sageuk to dive into in the coming months.

Black Knight has been on my watchlist since it was first announced, though I wish we'd get more than just a poster - though I'm all about that dystopian hellscape as a backdrop.

Ok I'll probably drop it early but I really hope The Real Deal Has Come is good! Even if it's just to read our beanie Lawyer's thoughts about it.

1. This is horrible information to put out there, but I would let Chun Woo-hee con me for sapphic reasons. I just think she’d look very hot doing it. If she catches me slipping, that’s on me!

2. Extremely happy about even more Chun Woo-hee, but not so sure about Jang Ki-yong. I sure hope he rejuvenated his acting skills during his military hiatus, otherwise it’d be a waste to pair him with such an acclaimed Chungmuro darling.

3. Gorgeous aesthetically. I need this to be lighthearted, romantic, and good. Please drama gods, let this be good. It’s true that nothing will replace Sungkyunkwan Scandal, but I need a worthy substitute for when I don’t want the guilt of pirating a show with a predator male lead (or the pain of rewatching YAI as the second lead).

4. Feels like it’s been forever since I’ve seen either actors on my screen. I hope this weekender finally sparks my lasting interest - something its predecessors failed spectacularly.

5. …How are they surviving… with no… air? I understand this is dystopian sci-fi, but no amount of fake science bullshit can compensate for the fundamental human act of breathing. I thought the initial pitch was heavily polluted air, which is plausible and depressingly prescient, but not no air. Eh, whatever, Kim Woo-bin’s back! And Esom too! Love them both, so where’s the freaking release date??!? I’ve been waiting for YEARS.

6. Honestly, Lee Ki-woo seems more leading man material for Honey Lee than Lee Jong-won to me, but I’m not judging since there’s zero information about the plot. Still, it’s shaping up to be a solid cast regardless.

7. I see they finally ditched the brownface, thank god for small mercies. Seol In-ah is beyond stunning, I can totally see why that’s a face that would break up friendships and start conflicts - even if I don’t usually care for the ‘beautiful woman sabotages manly man brotherhood’ trope; it feels vaguely misogynistic to me somehow.

No. 7. KBS’s OASIS. Severe availability angst as a US viewer. Episode one will be airing in four days on Monday, March 6 and I still know of no legal stream in the US.
MDL reports that it will be available on Wavve.
I just learned (I know I am slow) Wavve bought Kocowa in December 2022. Here is the article:
https://deadline.com/2022/12/south-korea-content-waave-kocowa-acquisition-kcontent-1235204956/

What does this all mean? Who knows.

Hopefully, we will be able to stream more kdrama in US. Kocowa has been a major disappointment.
