Shameless plugs and the power of memes

Here at Dramabeans, we’re not above the occasional shameless plug — and so that’s what this post is: a shameless plug for our recently refreshed Instagram channel. While we all still prefer the long-form content and safe space that is the Dramabeans website, sometimes we have ideas or jokes that are best expressed via that glorious 21st century art form: the meme. Yes, you’ll find many a meme on our channel, and we deliver them in the spirit of janky fan-made content. Because we’re fans, and we made ’em ourselves.

If you find yourself scrolling through “Outstagram” and would rather see something silly and K-drama-related than something that makes you want to run and hide, give us a follow! (And below, as bait, check out some of our recent favorite posts.)

I am glad you flagged this here as there are so many lurkers on the site who may not review the fan wall and so missed the recent beanie post about the joy of the recent Insta posts😍

I don't use social media but maybe I should start now. 😏

Sorry not sorry.

I try to be careful who I grant permissions to or permit to access my information, and I don't like to read long terms and conditions, OR agree to them without reading.

But there's no need to even think about reading Instagram's terms. They are a part of the notorious data gather/seller/leaker Meta/Facebook family. I am not on Facebook and I will never even consider agreeing to the Terms of any member of that family, or doing anything else that could be considered as giving them permission to gather info on me. Never.

So the time I could have spent reading Insta's terms & conditions can instead be spent on kdramas and Dramabeans. And one of the reasons I spend so much time here and it means so much to me is because I'm not on any other social-network sites.

THANK YOU. I often feel like a lone voice in the wilderness on this issue. I've grown weary of telling everyone I know "no, I'm not on Facebook/Insta/etc. and never will be" and having them look at me like I'm a pitiful Luddite. Yes, I know I'm "missing out." No, I don't care. Facebook and every platform related to it are and have always been primarily a tool for Mark Zuckerberg to collect personal information and do whatever he wants with it.

I recognize that DB and many, many other sites, people, and organizations I support or enjoy or want to engage with have no choice but to deal with the Facebook borg. As long as I have a choice, I won't.

Nope, not gonna do it either.
Today I had to drive a fair ways to a store hoping they had an item in stock because they didn’t answer their own “contact us” email and they don’t have a PHONE NUMBER. They told me they’d rather engage with customers on social media like Instagram. 🤢 I felt like it must be time for me to die but also that I will probably go ahead and pay shipping for this item from an out of town business in the future.

I totally understand what you guys are saying and good on you, but I think this actually kinda demonstrates why it’s a great idea for DB to be casting a wider net right now. All of us DB users are great and I love our loyalty, but this site is huge (so many years of posts!) and I think anything they can do to support this space and gain more of an audience is a win. I would hate for anything to happen to this site and doing just blogging without any meaningful presence elsewhere just doesn’t seem sustainable for a site like this IMO.

This community is great but it’s very small and tends to get a bit… one-sided. I think this will be a very good thing for DB and kdrama discussion as a whole.

Thanks @mindy for reminding us that there is plenty of scope for both types of presence and the potential benefits. We love this site and the wealth of knowledge and fun to be had here and there is a whole group of K drama lovers that are missing out by not being aware of its existence. It will be great if this brings even more new voices into the comments section. A lively comments section on dramas I am not watching can be so entertaining. I love the wealth of knowledge re the cultural, historical etc context that gets shared and the mentions of alternative watches to add to the watchlist.

Elinor, you are not alone. I don’t do Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, or any other social media. Not only for the privacy issues you mention, but also for the harm they inflict on individuals and society at large.

I do understand, however, that some people and businesses can’t properly function without social media, and that for some people it’s an effective way to connect with family, friends, and community. So I try to refrain from criticizing those who do, and to avoid “virtue signaling.”

I hope you don’t let anyone guilt you or shame you into falling down the social media rabbit hole. Stay strong!

I deleted all my Facebook and other Facebook-owned (instagram, whatsapp) accounts years ago, for many reasons (just go into your Facebook privacy settings and see the history of businesses uploading your info to Facebook, in my case a lot of realtors, which is why I don't go provide my name at open houses anymore).

I joined Mastodon a couple of months ago, and one nice feature of the "fediverse" is that there are servers set up for people with a common interest (fiction writing, non-fiction writing, book editing, tech, art, journalism...), but I haven't seen one yet for kdrama fans. It's not really necessary to have a special-interest server, but it helps people find each other and set up long running discussions. I'm on a big one called universeodon.com because I saw George Takei on it, but when I search for #kdrama not much shows up. It would be cool to see more of you guys there.

These are great! I'm glad to know about this other outlet for kdrama memes! I don't really like the fact that I'm on insta, but I still grudgingly am, so this will increase the positivity of my experience!

Lol this is exactly what I needed in my life... after Dramafever died I missed all their memes I'd find around.
