The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 3-4

The plot thickens as our heroine strikes a dangerous deal to protect her home, livelihood, and loved ones. Is she jumping in over her head? Perhaps, especially considering her new friends each have a secret agenda to pursue. But she’s not about to let a little (or a lot of) danger stop her — not when she has secrets of her own.

EPISODE 3-4

Despite his obvious skepticism of Dan-oh’s ability, Tae-hwa gives Dan-oh a month to find Lee Seol or forfeit Ihwawon. So Dan-oh starts seeking out former servants of Lee Seol’s family to try and rustle up a few clues. The first contact lives a day’s journey away, and though Dan-oh insists she’s fine to go alone, the boys tag along anyway. Well, Yoo-ha and Shi-yeol tag along — San follows secretly, using his previous run-in with the local bandits as leverage to secure safe passage for Dan-oh and her companions through the forest.

It doesn’t take long for Dan-oh to spot San lurking around town, however, and she teases him for worrying about her, which he firmly denies. This is becoming a pattern for them — San pretends he cares about nothing and no one, and Dan-oh gleefully takes every opportunity to notice when his actions betray that he is, in fact, a considerate person.

Anyway, according to the former servant, Lee Seol was adopted into a noble family to help conceal his identity, and he bears a distinctive red mole on his ankle. And wouldn’t you know it — the man’s description of the young prince could easily fit any of our three Flower Scholars.

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 3-4

Dan-oh reaches out to her own network of servants, tailors, and other workers to see if any have noticed a scholar with a red mole on his ankle (they haven’t). She’s not above checking her own guests’ ankles, either — seeing San napping in the sun, she can’t resist reaching to untie his ankle wrap. Of course, he catches her in the act, and both end up flustered at the sudden closeness and the absence of a satisfactory answer for why she was undressing him.

Dan-oh hasn’t told anyone about her task, and the Flower Scholars (minus San, who overheard her make the deal with Tae-hwa) are dying to know what she’s up to. So they do a little digging of their own and find out the truth, none seeming particularly thrilled with the idea.

Right around that time, Dan-oh receives a letter summoning her to a cabin deep in the bamboo forest and promising information about Lee Seol. There, she’s met with a sword to her throat… but it’s just San, trying to drive home his warning that she’s messing with something that could get her killed. But Dan-oh’s prepared to risk her life to protect Ihwawon — or, as she says, her family.

Though she claims “family” means her guests and livelihood, there’s definitely something else going on here. After the death of Tae-hwa’s son, Dan-oh’s family hid her sister, YOON HONG-JOO (Jo Hye-joo), in the annex to protect her from Tae-hwa’s demand that she follow her husband-to-be in death. And although the official story is that Hong-joo died of smallpox soon after, the “ghost” Shi-yeol encounters in the annex looks rather alive to me…

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 3-4

In any case, the Flower Scholars are as impressed by Dan-oh’s resolve as they are worried for her safety, so they all volunteer to help her find Lee Seol. Dan-oh’s out of contacts, however, so they need to get their hands on the official list of former slaves to Lee Seol’s family. Shi-yeol racks his brain and comes up with the self-proclaimed brilliant plan of bribing a gambling buddy to let them in while he’s on guard duty. It works, and Shi-yeol naps while Dan-oh and San search through record books.

San thinks he’s being sly stealing glances when Dan-oh isn’t looking, but she catches him with a big ol’ grin on his face, prompting another supercharged moment of closeness. As their allotted time runs out, San finds the book they’re looking for. He surreptitiously places it back on the shelf, but Dan-oh spots it anyway, much to his dismay.

The book’s list leads Dan-oh from one servant to another, and finally to a former servant-turned-gisaeng — none other than Hwa-ryung. She’s reluctant to give Dan-oh any answers, warning that looking for Lee Seol can and will make her the target of Lee Seol’s infamous bodyguard: the black-clad swordsman who gave Tae-hwa his scar, A.K.A. “the Watchman.” But, moved by Dan-oh’s plea that lives are at stake, Hwa-ryung offers one clue: Lee Seol possesses a valuable artifact marked with a dragon insignia.

Hwa-ryung isn’t the only one concerned about the Watchman. Tae-hwa, it turns out, isn’t all that interested in what happens to Lee Seol, except that if Lee Seol is in danger, the Watchman is sure to appear — and it’s the Watchman Tae-hwa wants to kill. Left State Minister SHIN WON-HO (Ahn Nae-sang) warns that the Watchman (or rather, Watchmen, as it appears there’s a whole group of secret swordsmen dedicated to protecting Lee Seol’s family) isn’t to be trifled with, but tells Tae-hwa he can do what he wants with the Watchman so long as he delivers Lee Seol alive.

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 3-4

Adjacent to all of the team action, each of our Flower Scholars pursues a personal goal of some kind as well. Yoo-ha and his fellows pick out a secret room, which they declare the perfect spot for planning a revolt. Then they busy themselves translating their prophecy book so common people can read it and join them.

Yoo-ha also has a run-in with his brother, the legitimate family heir, who couldn’t care less that his mother is gravely ill and upends his drink over Yoo-ha’s head for requesting that he visit her. The encounter reveals some sort of connection between Yoo-ha’s father and Hwa-ryung, which means there’s likely a connection between Yoo-ha and Lee Seol as well, though it’s unclear if Yoo-ha knows about it.

San, meanwhile, meets with the former Head Eunuch and warns him to leave town while he still can. In return, the Head Eunuch warns that San’s growing feelings for Dan-oh make her a dangerous liability to his mission. Their conversation makes it clear that San isn’t Lee Seol, but (probably) one of the Watchmen.

The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 3-4

They’re interrupted by the arrival of Tae-hwa and his men. As San flees, one of their arrows lands in his shoulder, but he escapes and patches himself up before heading back toward Ihwawon. He bumps into Dan-oh on the street, and when he passes out from blood loss, she bundles him into a passing palanquin to hide as Tae-hwa closes in.

So, if our missing prince isn’t San after all, who is he? Well, he’s been hiding in plain sight all this time, dropping little hints — sleeping in the dog house, making comments about how weird it would be if Lee Seol were among the Ihwawon guests — almost as if he wants someone to figure it out.

Lee Seol is Shi-yeol. Which is exactly who I’d hoped he’d be, even though I really didn’t think the show would actually go there! He’s also planning something, and I cannot wait to find out what.

I'm doomed now I'm only curious about Shi-yeol becoming King...

For the drama, I thought it was really sad that Dan-Oh never asked herself about the consequences if she finds Lee Seol. I understand she wants to save her sister but Shi-yeol reminded her she was working for the King now.

It's funny that San doesn't know that he has to protect Shi-yeol, I wonder if Shi-yeol knows.

"It's funny that San doesn't know that he has to protect Shi-yeol, I wonder if Shi-yeol knows".

I was thinking the same. It is as if they don't know each other. But how can San be a watchman if he doesn't know the person he has to protect?

Maybe he needs to pass his test before being in the secret?

I only hope he is not the same Watchman that appeared in the second episode. He should be older. It would make no sense.

I don't think he needs to. He's a watchman already. I think he needs to palace military exams to be able to qualify as the Lee Seol's personal bodyguard and also have unrestricted access to any part of the palace, amongst other reasons.

He didn't seem to know Shi-Yeol's identity. It's why I was talking about the test.

1

I think they all know. They're just not letting Dan-oh or the audience in on the secret.

And the eunuch? He watched Shi Yeol too when he went to the guesthouse looking for the Prince.
And he paid attention to their faces...

The Eunuch knows; he's just playing both sides to see who gives him a better deal. Remember what he said to San about Dan? "Does she know who you are?"

6

I don't know. When Shi-Yeol was frightened by the ghost and went in San's room, San wasn't acting like he should with his Prince but pretty casually.

But the prince was acting like he knew the watchman had to protect him.

@toomuchtv maybe Shi-Yeol knows but I don't think San knows.

Thanks for the recaps! I was looking forward to this so I can order my thoughts and tie up loose ends.
Our cute and funny Shi Yeol being the lost Prince has been a surprise for me.
Now I want to know what is the connection between Yoo-ha and Hwa-ryung.

This drama is really fast-paced and I'm enjoying it so far.

An ancient order of men sworn to protect the pure royals. Count me in on them. I do not want their identities unveiled, I do not want to meet them either. But I like it when a drama adds a shadowy air to the plot. And the fact that whoever is Queen Dowager is the only one who interacts with them but still doesn't know who they are except to supply thier funding makes thier existence all the more juicy.

Out of all the physical characteristics listed about Ok Jin, the upward edge lip smile was the deal breaker. Any of the F3 can have the remaining features but that one is too distinct. And yes, I wanted Shi-yeol to be Lee Seol.

I'm enjoying this.

Plot moves along nicely, seeming to reveal a lot early, only to make it clear that there is a lot more to understand in the tangled web of connections and competing (but complementary) agendas!

Dan oh seems to be a very skilled and determined investigator, so stopping her from discovering and revealing all should prove an interesting challenge.

I like all three of the young men, but especially our putative king, and it will be interesting to see what happens when they will discover each others identities/agendas.

I do actually wonder if San does know who Shi yeol is - there were quite a few disbelieving glances at his behaviour at various points (mind you), and maybe its the main reason he decided to stay on at Inhawon - but presumably he doesn't want to blow his cover?

Was there ever a reason to assume this was a thing ? From the beginning I saw more signals that her romantic interest lies with Kang San.

It was clear that Yooha likes her at least. I thought they would make it more of a love triangle dynamic with her showing interest to both but it's obviously not going that way.

In fact, when Yoo-ha was sweeping the petals, she seemed to watch him with loving eyes.

4

HAHA YES I knew it too. I knew it was him when he came out of that doghouse. A lot of signs pointed to him too. He even named the dog Bok-sil. And my senses told me it was him too, because it is one of those plots where the writer wanted everyone to think it was the two other guys, when the real deal was right under everyone's noses the entire time, behaving like a fool so he can stay undercover.

But Bok-shil is a common name for dogs in Korea. I thought it was a false clue XD

I thought it was Shi-yeol when he brought Dan-oh the dog. I was further convinced when he came out of the dog house. But what confirmed it for me is how his name appears in Viki's translation. Viki spells it "Si Yeol." If you switch out the first letters of his name (is that called a spoonerism?), his name is Yi Seoul or Lee Seoul.

My theory is that San is the son of the Watchman or one of the Watchmen, but I think it will pack a more dramatic punch if he's the son of THE Watchman, the one who killed Tae-hwa, aka Scarface's son. I also think Yoo-ha is the son of someone who supported Lee Seol's family.

All that being said, I would love to see the drama depart from the norm and pair Dan-oh with San. I like their blossoming relationship.

Now that you've pointed out that letter swap thing - brilliant spot by the way - I feel so stupid for not noticing 😂

Yes, I also think though that San might be one of the watchman - I wonder if anything in his fighting style might give it a way if he's got a similar flair to the dude who killed Tae-hwa (assuming that that watchman is San's dad).

Well that was a quick game of Guess Who? 😂 I don't want to say I knew it, because I definitely did not last week, but I had a feeling when I was watching episode 3 and they were really pushing San and Yoo-ha into the suspect spotlight with the whole ankle skit - felt like a really visible misdirect and then I suppose that feeling was confirmed in next episode!

Coincidentally, Shi-yeol stole my attention this week so I guess I'm now also setting up another campsite for more SLS. I think the specific scene that got to me was early on in ep 4 when he tries to convince Dan-oh not to go after the prince (lol) by herself. Also (especially in hindsight now that we know he is the prince) he reminds me a LOT of Byeon Woo-seok's character from Flower Crew Marriage Agency and also his character in Moonshine (is there a theme here???) - so I'm doomed because I spent the entirety of both those shows desperately hoping the FL would end up with his characters/s instead of the with the ML. There's something about 'prince pretending to be a jovial and superficial but actually being keenly observant and intelligent' that really does it for me apparently *sighs*.

I think the show has made it clear since the beginning that he is not a "contender" for Dan Oh's love :/
So the third in the triangle must be Yoo Ha.
Maybe because Kang Hoon and Shin Ye Eun seem to be good friends in real life (they even traveled to Spain XD) so they keep them as friends in fiction.

But between the sister and Shi Yeol... I hope there can be something.

That's true, ep 4 sort of drove that in when he gave Yoo-ha a heads up. Honestly the more I think about it, the better that is I guess, because I suppose I wanted SLs to 'get the girl' in other shows because I didn't want to see them so forlorn and wanted them to be the main lead basically 😂 At least if Shi-yeol isn't part of the love geometry - and since he's royalty - he'll actually get a proper arc and a chance to shine!!

And yes actually, they did seem to hint (or I'm really reading into it) the potential for a something-something between him and Dan-oh's unnie 👀 There's also the other girl, the aristocrat turned courtesan ?? I know she hasn't met the entire crew yet but I wonder if/when she does, what her role might be.

Also I didn't know they were friends irl and have travelled together :O That's so sweet!

Yes about San!! I'm not the only one yay hahaha I was lukewarm with him at first but he really is growing on me episode after episode.

I hope so too - for drama that's not super serious, I keep getting surprised at just how invested I am in almost every character!!

Thanks for the recap! I started watching this one this week. It started slow and I wasn't sure about it, but got more interesting. I liked the deft way the script writer made me think, "San is the prince. Wait. Maybe we're supposed to think he's the prince. No. Maybe she's faking us out? It's going to be the cute wastrel guy!" (Shi-yeol, but now I'm going to have to remember a new name!) and so on. I knew the super handsome, tall, gentle scholar (Yoon-ha) wasn't going to be the prince because he's way too princely. What surprised me was the reveal that the owner of the courtesan house is probably Yoon-ha's mother. Yes, mother, even though she looks like she's the same age, I'm calling it right now!

I really prefer dramas where I'm swept up with the emotions of the characters rather than ones where I'm trying to work out the intricacies of the mystery plot. Yet at the same time, I get hooked when there's something to figure out. It also provides more to discuss!

Carefully optimistic of the Lee Seol reveal- I would love it to be Shi Yeol but due to how early this was exposed it could be one big red herring. I hope it's not though!!!

Also, heres hoping there won't be a love line between him and Dan Oh, but I will be thrilled for him to have a relationship (platonic or otherwise) with the sister and play to her arc.

Yoo Ha's family life is.. rough. Also, he is probably the biological son of that inn manager lady. I kind of want to see them become a mother-son power dou (even though im not a huge fan of the bio parent ==== true parent narrative)

Not huge fan of San Kang. He comes off as very immature at best and outright rude, confusing jerk at worst.

Overall, I got hooked. I love love love mystery. And the light desposition of the drama makes it much easier to follow and brights up my week!

Enjoying this so far. Delighted that Shi Yeol is our Prince and the Watchman is the ML. Now, if we get Shi Yeol to bring the elder sister conundrum into the light in the next episodes I'll be happy, as we'll get the team together to protect the Prince and Dan Oh.
