Shin Ye-eun welcomes Joseon F3 in Flower Scholars’ Love Story

Did someone say hot Joseon scholars? In the new teaser for SBS’s upcoming sageuk drama Flower Scholars’ Love Story, we get a look into the life of a young housekeeper and her rowdy, but totally endearing, three guests.

Shin Ye-eun (Revenge of Others) stars as Yoon Dan-oh, the young manager of the Lee Hwawon boarding house for scholars. She’s scrappy, level-headed, and clearly not afraid to subvert a few gender expectations in the name of good business. Over the years, she’s hosted scholars from across the country, but it isn’t until she hosts a crop of three eye candy flower scholars (who we are definitely going to refer to as the “F3” here on out) that her business and her life begin to dramatically change.

The F3 in question are a trifecta of young and mega-attractive scholars played by up-and-coming actors. First off, we have Kang San — played by Ryeoun (Through the Darkness) — a stoic and determined student preparing to attend martial arts school. Following him we have Kim Shi-yeol — played by Kang Hoon (Little Women) — a cheeky prankster with a heart for justice. And finally, rounding out the three, we have our sensitive womanizing scholar Jung Yoo-ha — played by Jung Geon-joo (Kiss Sixth Sense). Together, these three musketeers and their landlord will learn to cohabitate and possibly uncover a mysterious connection from their past that ties them together.

The first teaser provides a little more context into the plot, and it’s already giving Sungkyunkwan Scandal (for all you older drama fans) levels of bromance and squee potential. We open on Dan-oh soliciting scholars to stay at Lee Hwawon, promising it to be the premiere lodging spot. Then we cut to scenes of her first two guests San and Shi-yeol having way too many bed-related fights to be comfortable and San asking Shi-yeol in the voiceover just how long he plans to stay.

We’re then shown scenes of Dan-oh thinking about a boy from her childhood and wondering aloud if he’s doing all right. In flashback, we’re shown that when the two met, the boy promised to tell her his name if they ever met again, but they were torn apart due to some tragic circumstances. Perhaps this boy is one of our scholars?

Finally, we end with scenes of our F3 scholars being individually smitten by Dan-oh, sneaking glances and sharing some sweet looks with our leading lady, while in the voiceover Yoo-ha tells Dan-oh that things have changed for him since he entered Lee Hwawon. When she asks him what exactly he means, he responds, “My heart.”

Written by Kwon Eum-mi (Woman with a Suitcase) and directed by Kim Jung-min (Queen: Love and War), Flower Scholars’ Love Story will premiere on SBS in March 2023.

This is a throw back and could be fun. I'm not a particular fan of the FL, but I'll give this a try.

Shin Ye-eun really surprised me with how terrifying she was in The Glory, so I now have renewed interest in her acting career. I hope this one is good for her, but I would like something less fluffy but also not all-out villainous next time!

I love Sungkyunkwan Scandal: Electric Boogaloo. Maybe this time, Kang Hoon won’t break my heart like Yoo Ah-in did. Maybe. Perhaps.

I am delusional.

Shin Ye-Eun has a talent to pick terrible dramas. So I'm kinda suspicious.

But it can be fun and light with the usual tragic past.

Jung Geon-Joo will face another Danoh! I hope their relationship will be as fun than in Extraordinary You.

I'm surprise to see Kang-Hoon in this one, he filmed Little Women and A Time Called You too.

I know only 2 dramas with Ryeoun Adult Trainee (with good kiss scenes) and Through the Darkness (his role was small).

Ryeoun acted as timid highschool boy in 18 Again and I find him very cute especially when he smiled shyly. So when I saw him in Adult Trainee I kinda got whiplash, he was so hot there.

She does which is a shame. It's already shown how at least one of these characters witnessed their entire family getting slaughtered at a very young age but willing to give this a try as it still seems on the light hearted side.

Thanks @jenzy you had me at F3. I was not going to comment for fear of having my words come back to haunt me but I am going to chance it. This could finally be the sageuk I have been desperately waiting to see; slice of life rom com that just happens to be in period dress with NO palace politics. There I have said it. Jebal, let it be so (rubs hands together on bended knees).

My very first thought when I finished reading was that I was going to tap out of this drama as soon as one of the scholars is revealed to secretly be the crown prince XD

Fingers crossed for no palace politics!

Stay tuned for my post on how I threw my phone/laptop across the room when it’s inevitably revealed that the ML is the long-lost geeenius son of the king.

speaking of said crown prince, he was in the weak Hero Class 1 and I just kept seeing him in Alchemy as the crown prince even though his role was vastly different.

Oh my! Let me help you up off your knees cause that is reserved only for poor, helpless help of rich chaebols or those drowning in debt in front of the seedy debt collectors! I will join you in hoping it is a good saeguk though.

🤣Thanks love, I have spent way too much time begging and pleading to no avail. I live in hope that 2023 is going to be the comeback year as K drama writers and the rest of the team regain focus, energy and their confidence they can reclaim the romance genre from the Chinese drama scene which has been reigning supreme in this genre over the last few years.

Well, this looks like all kinds of adorable. I do like the look of our actors here together. I’ve had my eye on Jung Geon-joo since he played the backstabbing best friend and opportunistic scholar opposite of Junho’s Crown Prince in Red Sleeve, and so looking forward to him getting more air time here with a more likable character. I don’t think I’ve seen Ryeoun in anything, but he’s pretty to look at. 😂 As long as the chemistry is good between the FL and her suitors, I’m probably going to love this.

Agreed with everything you said. Just a small correction, Kang Hoon was the backstabbing friend from Red Sleeve Cuff, not Jung Geon-joo. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself!

Also, I’ve seen Ryeoun in a few things and he’s alright. He hasn’t blown me away in anything, but his roles were pretty small so he didn’t really have the opportunity to show off yet. I recommend episodes 3-5 of Adult Trainee for his work.

Jung Geon-Joo played an excellent third lead (and chaotic BFF to Eun Dan-oh) in Extraordinary You, so hoping he’ll bring some of that energy here.

Hehe he is endearing in a double role of a hopeless second lead in a manhwa as well as a supportive BFF IRL . Also it's mind-blowing that he was in the running for Jang Nara's heart in Oh my Baby in what seems like ages ago; he is even now so young!

SBS’s FLOWER SCHOLARS’ LOVE STORY is also going under the title ROMANTIC GUEST HOUSE. Being an SBS production there is a possibility (no guarantee anymore) it may be available on Kocowa/Viki US.
This is a possibility for me. One hook is Director Kim Jung-min. He is an experienced sageuk Director having directed since 2018: TV Chosun’s GRAND PRINCE (2018), TV Chosun’s QUEEN: LOVE AND WAR (2019/20) and KBS’s ROYAL SECRET AGENT (2020/21). All were well received from what I recall. I watched and enjoyed GP and Q: L&W. I missed RSA.
There shouldn’t be any problem in the look of the drama.
The cast is quite attractive. I haven’t seen much of the four leads work. I did enjoy Kang Hoon’s dark performance in RED SLEEVE CUFF and last year Ryeoun’s performance in THROUGH THE DARKNESS. It was a small role but he handled it well. Shin Ye-eun is a blank slate. Jung Geon-joo appeared in the terrific THE THIRD CHARM (2018) but unfortunately I don’t recall him off the top of my head.

O/T. GRAND PRINCE brings back fond memories. It was my introduction to Yoon Shi-yoon. I really enjoyed it. It aired Mar.-May 2018 when Dramabeans was at a low point (to put it mildly) and those of us who wanted to comment had to resort to hijacking a GP News post for a place to hang out. It was fun but I am glad those days have come and gone. There was a ratings pledge from the 3 leads (YSY, Jin Se-yeon and Joo Sang-wook) that if the final episode reached a 5 percent rating they would give a group hug session. It did and they kept their promise on May 9, 2018. It was sweet. If you want to go back to pre pandemic days and check it out I have a YouTube video of it on my Fanwall.

Those free hugs were so lovely. The actress gave proper hugs with arm rubs and big smiles, the poor men were much more aware of maintaining appropriate distances.

I am glad you checked it out. Joo Sang-wook was by far the most uncomfortable with the deal but a good sport. Jin Se-yeon and Yoon Shi-yoon looked quite at ease. I get a kick at the end of the ajumma/halmoni with pocket book going across to get her hugs.
Things being the way they are I don’t think we will see that kind of thing for a long time .

I’m gonna cross my fingers and light candles to the Kdrama gods that this turns out to be as adorable and engaging as I’m hoping it will be. I will be so happy if it lives up to the Sungkyunkkwan Scandal vibe the trailer is giving off!
