59th Baeksang Arts Awards: Nominees

I’m always torn on whether I actually like award shows or not. Sometimes it’s nice to see my favorite dramas, actors, etc. patted on the back for their beautiful work. But other times, I wish award shows would go away, because more than high ratings and/or critical acclaim, what makes a drama a winner for me is how much it affects me, how long it stays with me, and the message and memories it leaves behind.

My personal quandary aside, the Baeksang Arts Awards are well-respected, look across networks and production studios, and give us an interesting look at what’s seen as the most well-crafted and acted productions in TV and film. And, ngl, some noms on this list gave me a huge smile — and then a whole lot of mental gymnastics as I decided on my own personal winners, and then realistic predictions, for each category.

Below are some of the drama-related nominations for your enjoyment and discussion.

Imagine not nominating under the queen's umbrella for the best drama category. I watched the glory and to me it's trash, aside from making it uncomfortable nothing else unlike under the queen's umbrella. Hope Kim hye soo will get the best actress award.

Well, it looks like the last year’s dramas were not for me. I haven’t even begun most on the list, and the ones I have I dropped it at some point.

So judging from what I’ve heard so far about some actors’ and actresses’ acting, I would think that PEB would win the Best Actress. For Best Actor, the veteran one from Reborn Rich would probably take the award. For Supposting Actress, the one from The Glory might win in this category.

So they look across all networks and studios, and still couldn't find more than seven dramas for all their categories. I truly dislike these awards

Such a good point, this would be why a lot of comments have been made about awards globally only reinforce the status quo by ensuring recognition of the powerful.

I know that I'd really want Kang Ki-young as best supporting actor.

I was very worried that My Liberation Notes won't snag any nominations at the Baeksang since it aired at the early stages of the drama year but then it got 6 nominations. I don't want to jinx it so I'll end it here for my MLN comments. Nominations isn't enough even though it really means a lot to me. Winning a good number is.

And Little Women too. Though I'm pissed at the Uhm Ji-Won and Uhm Ki-joon snob. How did they not make the cut for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress? I just hope they're not thinking of giving the award to Choi Min-shik. To anyone who gets what I mean by the previous sentence, I'm not in any way critiquing the veteran for his role in Big Bet, it just seems contrived to me.

Baeksang Arts Awards is the equivalent of the Emmy Awards. Sometimes, I think it's fair, and sometimes not. I'm not sure what we are going to get this year.

I would say they are more of Golden Globes, as Beaksang only have 60 voting members. GG voting members only have about 100, though expanding after receiving flak in recent years.

And yes Baeksang voting members must probably be older in demographics. This reflect their nominations.

Despite some of their choices, I still tend to agree with many of them. Without them, I might not have known some of the dramas I prefer to watch.

Blue Dragon is Korea’s Oscar Awards. I don’t know what to compare Grand Bell to other than it’s the other film awards. I remember one year that the nominees were told that if they don’t show up to the award ceremony, they won’t be receiving the award if they win.

You are correct, Baeksang is similar to Golden Globe Awards . My mistakes, Emmy is a music award show. 😆

There are some dramatic snubs and questionable acting nominees for 2023.

The biggest effrontery for me is Lee Minki getting passed over for MLN while everyone else gets a nom. I found Kim Jiwon, Son Suku, and Lee El to be good in MLN, while Lee Minki was GREAT.

I'm utterly enraged at Lee Minki not being nominated, as to me MLN was all about Chang Hee. He was the core of the drama, the exact center the drama revolved around. And yes, SSK was good, but not even close to LMK.

This is a very reasonable list relative to some previously - and I have watched most of them except Anna and Casino. The only omissions to me are Lee Minki in My Liberation Notes and Uhm Ji-won in Little Women. Both are exceptional performances. LMK brings that sense of reality to MLN which could otherwise be an abstract drama not readily accessible to some viewers. And Little Women would not fly high without the deliciously devilish antagonist in UJW. I also wish the two fathers in Our Blues could get an honorable mention.

My personal picks for the drama category:

Best Drama - My Liberation Notes and Little Women. They are above the cut and show the world what Kdrama could achieve artistically whilst entertaining the mass audience. I like EAW a lot when it aired but it doesn’t stick after the drama is over and the episodic format could be an issue to the ‘stick’ factor. Our Blues is great but somehow it’s not as great as the writer’s Dear My Friends. I watched The Glory in one sitting. There are some good elements and character set-ups but when it’s finished, it’s over to me - nothing sticks or worth thinking again.

Best Actor - Lee Sung-min, period! I can’t recall my crying over the passing of a villain. Reborn Rich is not the same after he’s gone.

Best Actress - Park Eun-bin. Acknowledgement long overdue (and I hope KHS doesn’t mind the award going to a younger actress).

Best Supporting Actor - Kim Do-hyun (for it is an out of the kilter character) and Park Sung-joon (who is universally good in everything he does and be a main lead in the years to come). I think I like the character of Kang Ki-young in EAW better than his delivery.

Best Supporting Actress - Kim Shin-rok. It’s all about her range and how she delivers each role to the T. Her bratty princess-y character in Reborn Rich shows a very different side from many other characters she has played before.

Best New Actor - Joo Jong-hyuk. It’s an impressive turn. He delivers a character that we know and have met at various stages of our work life - it’s not likeable but you understand where he comes from and see his vulnerability. Grey characters are not easy to play and I hope the writer could have written this character with more nuances.

Best New Actress - Noh Yoon-seo. What a gem she is! I love her performances in both Our Blues as the struggling pregnant teenager and the clear-headed girl in Crash Course in Romance. A bright future ahead.

With you on Kim Shin-rok for Supporting Actress. She was extraordinary in RR. She made a character that was essentially pathetic become a layered, contradictory, infuriating person who held my interest for every second she was on screen.

It would be nice to see more different dramas in the nominations. It's always like that, the ratings/entries make the nominations.

I'm honestly just happy that extraordinary attorney woo and My liberation notes have high nominations, they're both one of the best dramas to me. The acting, dialogue and scenic directing was just so good. My liberation notes touching on sensitive topics without being too preachy about it and Extraordinary attorney woo featuring a diverse character and inviting the viewers to see things from her perspective. The other dramas are likewise also good.
I honestly think that baeksang art awards aren't partial to dramas with high ratings , popularity or whatever, because if that was the case Alchemy of souls on terms of popularity would literally be in all the categories, it's really one of the dramas that brought kdramas to an international base. And it terms of high ratings "Reborn rich" would be snagging a lot of nominations but it didn't. I recall 57th baeksang awards when "it's okay not to be okay" snagged 8 nominations and 3 wins ,I mean I loved that drama but I was surprised because it had relatively low ratings (not on IMDB but in terms of percentage viewership) so they might actually not be that biased , maybe there are elements in a drama or acting that appeals to them more than another.

Yes, unlike the drama awards of the 3 broadcasters where ratings rule, Baeksang is relatively quality based.

Aside for rating, buzz also become a consideration for Enter baeksang. For example is it's okay not to be okay. So it's abit naive if it's not to be their consideration. Alchemy of soul writers included in category despite of their uneven writing. So AOS is still included.

Aometimes baeksang awards nomination is enpredictable.

I would be happy with any nominations for best drama to win with the exception of the The Glory. It wasn't bad, but no match to the other dramas on that list.

A nice surprise were all the nominations for Anna, it was a good drama (with a nicely written ending!), sadly underrated and it was the first time I liked Suzy as an actress. I don't think any of the nominees should be winners, though.

For best actors I would like Sohn Seok-gu and Park Eun-bin to get the award.
Best supporting is a more difficult choice, but I would be happy for Kang Ki-young and Im Ji-yeon to win, she was really a great villain.

Moon Sang-min impressed me as crown prince and I really liked Non Yoon-seo, both in Our Blues and Crash Course in Romance. Both would be deserving winners for the New actor category.

I'm probably in a one-person minority here, but honestly I feel like last year's dramas and performances were entirely average, and they're all terribly lucky to be nominated here. In any other drama year, I feel like they'd not stand a chance. Maybe it was post-pandemic blues that the industry was still recovering from. Hoping '23 brings better stuff!

I tried several of these shows, and finished none, with the exception of Liberation Notes, which mostly had me aghast at how badly a perfectly fine cast, premise, and title could be ruined.

The solitary kdrama from last year I enjoyed was Bloody Heart, but I don't know if it was considered for nomination even because it was on a streaming network (?) - in any case, even if was considered and not nominated, I don't think it's brilliant enough to be award worthy, unless for cinematography and art direction or some such.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo was just another show that used autistic main character for #woke points but depended heavily on genius factor to make the said character a deserving member of society (I will forever hate the show for saying that Young Woo was the first person with autism to receive a law degree).

The Glory and Little Women were just fun shows to watch with mediocre writing.

My Liberation Notes had this pretentious writing that somehow deluded me into thinking it was profound for the better half of the show.

Big Bet was on a streaming network and it got a nomination. Kang Hanna, Jang Hyuk and Park Ji-yeon performed beyond extra and it's a disservice that even one of them didn't get even a nod in the nominations, talk less of Screenplay.

I haven't watched most of the dramas nominated, but I can only agree with you about Bloody Heart (although I enjoyed MLN and Our Blues a lot), and I'm a bit disappointed Kang Hanna didn't get a nomination for her role. I think she carried the whole drama on her shoulders (and yes, I am terribly Kang Hanna biased).

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

ok, I'm waiting for this post actually ... haha. There are some highs and lows from the nominations - let's start with the negatives first :

(-) :

- The biggest snub is where is Uhm Ji Won and Uhm Ki Joon for Best Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor? The absence of Uhm Ji Won would make the Supporting Actress an easy pick, Lim Ji Yeon is the absolute winner here.

- Also missing is Kim Hae Sook for Best Supporting Actress for UtQU. I really think there should be 3 villainess for best supporting actress which represented in Uhm Ji Won, Lim Ji Yeon, and Kim Hae Sook's characters. All actresses gave damn great performances. You can argue that Yoo Sun in Eve should also be considered to join the mix.

-No love for Call it Love and Love to Hate You? I guess these 2 dramas doesn't make much buzz in SK, aren't they.... (I noticed that Baeksang also about the buzz as well)

- I would like to see Kim Young Kwang nominated for either Somebody or Call it Love, sure Somebody is a controversial drama but his performance as psychopath there is nothing short of phenomenal.

- Still about Somebody; the lead girl in that drama (who's her name?) also deserve to be nominated in Best New Actress category. And so does Shin Ye Eun (The Glory), Go Youn Jung (Alchemy of Souls 2), and Jang Yoon Ju (Money Heist).

- Speaking of Alchemy of Souls, personally I disagree with Hong Sisters being nominated for best screenplay .... because of the letdown that is the 2nd season, I consider it to be one of their weaker works.

- The Glory receive waaay too many nominations (IMHO) just because it is the most "recently trending" series just before the awards. Our Blues should've receive more love (I would like to replace 2-3 Supporting Actor/ress noms with Our Blues performers, instead).

- Bloody Heart also deserve more love; the cinematography, the acting; of Jang Hyuk/Park Ji Yeon ... well ....

- How good is Anna? Haven't watched it, and I'm not a fan of Suzy so I guess there are still bias in my part here ...

The positives (+):

- Loves all the recognition for EAW. And it shows the strength of ENA compared to older cable TV networks

- Speaking about TV networks; the big old three (SBS-MBC-KBS) need to level up their game! They were doing fine last year, but completely decimated by both streaming networks and cable TVs this year ...

- My money is on Park Eun Bin winning best actress, although it is a very close race with Song Hye Kyo. But my gut tells me that Song Hye Kyo will win daesang instead, so the Best Actress trophy will be given to PEB.

- Best Director award should goes all the way to Kim Hee Won : she is one of the most talented PD out there! Loved all the haunting visuals, beautiful production design and cinematography of Little Women. In fact I can't wait to see her next work!

- My ultimate bias for best drama is MLN, but deep in my heart I want MLN to be this "under-the-radar drama that only those in the knows" know about .... yes I know it sounds absurd but I prized MLN that much so I that EAW to win this instead. Let EAW be the biggest winner for this year's Baeksang and make it a good showcase for the new TV network ENA. Park Hae Young and co already won before for My Ahjussi, as well ...

ooohh you're right! he's the PD behind dr. Romantic!!

Anyway after think about it again for a day, I got even more "snub lists" that I can think of :

- The King of Pigs was good but also snubbed? From what I've read it is one of the better bullying stories out there.
- Same goes for Jang Geun Seok's Bait

- Is Pachinko ineligible to compete in Baeksang? Does it considered as US production?

- Lastly, some recognition for these actor/ress which were snubbed in this season's Baeksang ... aside from those I mentioned earlier ... Lee Min Ki (MLN, very overdue for a recognition); Jung So Min (AoS, but she could make it next time with meatier roles I guess ... ), Jung Ryeo Won (MIPTC, she's so so so underrated!)

Best Drama : I can scratch The Glory out, but the rest four are equally good for me. Maybe Little Women and My Liberation Notes on top for me by a very slight margin.

Best Actor : Easily Lee Sung Min for the reason we know that he is a great actor, yet his performance in Reborn Rich was exceeded our expectations.

Best Actress : I know The Glory seems like a breaktrough acting for Song Hye Kyo, but to be honest, her perfomance is good but can be replaced. I can see another actress playing the role as good as she is playing it. I’m not very sure about Anna since I dropped the show, Kim Ji Won doing pretty well as Yeom Mi jung, but for me it’s Park Eun Bin. Her roles are difficult one. Even if she just do good it will be enough yet she can bring the best authentic character spotlessly as WYW. Couldn’t even imagine another actress playing as WYW.

Best Supporting Actor : All I can think is why Lee Min Ki isn’t one of the nominee for his role as Yeom Chang Hee. Shame.

Best Supporting Actress : Lim Ji Yeon.

Best New Actor : Have no opinion.

Best New Actress : Kim Hieora. Every scene she is in is a delight to watch. I love it when she is bantering with other characters. It seems like when she is acting she is not just bringing herself into the act but also can set the flow for another actors. It’s almost like they’re dancing because of her in her rhythm, but still looks like a team working together. I don’t know how to explain that, but it’s something like that.

Best Supporting Actress: Lee El

Your love for MLN is same as my love for MLN. If there were a couples award at the Baeksang, I'd like Lee Min-ki and Sohn Seok-ku to win the couples award.

As for Lee Min-ki not making the cut, I'm sure he was in their consideration but didn't make thr final cut. Lee Min-ki, Jang Hyuk or Eom Ki-joon should have gotten Choi Min-shik's slot. Or Lee Min-ki should have gotten a supporting actor nomination if the Best Actor slot was exhausted. But then, that'll mean that MLN got nominated in almost all the categories, they've got 7 already. IOTNBO got 8, so why deny MLN one more well deserved nomination. And if they really wanted to give a streaming site a nomination, we've got Bloody Heart's Jang Hyuk already.

I'll be on the lookout for the streaming site awards to see what they do. MPITC and Bloody Heart better get recognition there.

I think (and hope) that Lee Sung Min and Park Eun Bin will win. As to the drama, I have no preference, though I am rooting for the underdog, the little guy in the battle of networks : ENA for EAW. At least I enjoyed that drama. I think MLN and Our Blues are overrated, I watched 1 at 1.5x speed, while I dropped the other at ep 6.
