Oasis: Episodes 11-12

Absence makes the love triangle grow stronger when one of our leads is out for the count. As another time jump comes our way, we’ve got new jobs, lingering heartache, and old animosities coming to the fore. And, at the center of it all, there’s a queen bee who’s pulling all the strings.

Oasis: Episodes 11-12

We ended last time with Doo-hak getting shot and falling off the docks and into the water. When we jump into the action this week, we learn that his body was never found, making everyone believe he’s dead. In the aftermath, three of his gang member friends go back to prison for their involvement in his escape (but, oddly, Jung-shin isn’t in any trouble, even though it was her plan).

We then skip ahead three years and see what everyone is up to. Cheol-woong is now buddy-buddy with his new dad, Choong-sung, and the two start working together when Cheol-woong is promoted inside the ANSP. He’s still hitting on Jung-shin every chance he gets with no signs of backing down — no matter how many times she rejects him.

And, make no mistake, Jung-shin is still rejecting him. She wants Cheol-woong in her life and still thinks fondly about their time together as teenagers with Doo-hak, but she doesn’t want to sully those memories. She has no intention of being more than friends.

Still, Cheol-woong tries to help her (with obvious ulterior motives) whenever she’s in a bind. One such bind arises when Jung-shin loses most of her shares in Geum-ok’s production company and sets out to start her own film studio. Cheol-woong uses his powerful position to help her get a loan, and also collects data on the Hong Kong neo-noir film industry to give her advice on what to import. (We’re approaching the early 90s in the timeline, so this reference to the popularity of HK films was a nice touch.)

The strange thing about Jung-shin losing all her company shares is that it seems Geum-ok willfully screwed her over. Knowing Geum-ok’s personality, it doesn’t make sense — until we find out that Yeo-jin has coerced Geum-ok into doing it. Yeo-jin wants Cheol-woong to get over Jung-shin and she thinks that if Jung-shin goes broke, he’ll move on, and then she can hook him up with a chaebol heiress. Unfortunately for her, Cheol-woong won’t give up so easily.

It’s one of many instances this week where we see Yeo-jin orchestrating things behind the scenes. I knew she was a strategist, but now she’s got her hands in everything. Geum-ok even points out that Yeo-jin should be a main character in a movie — making me realize that she’s taken a center stage in the story we’re watching.

In addition to interfering with Jung-shin’s life, Yeo-jin also paid Am-daek a pretty penny to stay away from Cheol-woong. Am-daek is having a rough time since losing her husband and son three years ago and it makes her want to be closer to Cheol-woong — since she thinks of him as her only son now. But whenever she goes near him, Yeo-jin threatens her (or slaps her across the face).

There’s even a moment where Am-daek, blackout drunk, tells Jung-shin that Cheol-woong is her son. Jung-shin is so shocked that she asks Am-daek about it later, but Am-daek convincingly denies it, saying she’s been drinking too much and losing her mind lately. More than once, Am-daek tells Jung-shin and Cheol-woong she wishes they were a couple — but Jung-shin asserts that she’s not over Doo-hak.

Jang Dong-yoon Oasis: Episodes 11-12

Lucky for Jung-shin, our boy Doo-hak is alive and well (and looking mighty handsome) in Japan. He’s gotten in with some gangsters there too — who pulled him out of the ocean and saved his life — but he’s itching to return to Korea. Finally, the head honcho in his new criminal organization gets him a passport with a phony name so he can travel home. The catch is that he has to run the guy’s business in Korea — which I’m pretty sure has him headed for more trouble.

When Doo-hak returns, he seeks out his friends from the gang, who are now out of prison and running a gukbap joint. Against their better judgment, Doo-hak wants to get his revenge by putting things back to the way they were before he left. He misses Jung-shin but can’t meet her just yet because, once the baddies find out he’s not dead, they’ll try to kill him again. His plan is to hit them head-on before they get the chance.

Choo Young-woo Oasis: Episodes 11-12

As Doo-hak gets the old gang back together to run a bunch of casinos, he sets his sights on finding out who was behind his father’s death — since he doesn’t believe it was an accident. We know, of course, that Man-ok poisoned Joong-ho and then sent him stumbling into the road to make his death look like a hit-and-run. But we also know that he had orders to do that. Man-ok has been Choong-sung’s right-hand man for a long time, which is what makes the animosity growing between Man-ok and Choong-sung’s newly formed family so interesting.

Yeo-jin has had Man-ok in her pocket since she found out he tortured Cheol-woong — and Man-ok took the sole blame for it. As part of his debt to her, he’s been brokering real estate deals, since everyone is still buying up land around redevelopment areas. When Yeo-jin gets an offer to go into business with someone else, she backs out on Man-ok, leaving him in a tough spot.

Jang Dong-yoon and Seol In-ah Oasis: Episodes 11-12 Jang Dong-yoon and Seol In-ah Oasis: Episodes 11-12

At the same time, Cheol-woong is trying to have Man-ok fired — although, Choong-sung only sends him to a regional office. While we’ve seen Man-ok be nothing but loyal to Choong-sung, it looks like a stand-off is coming, given the way Cheol-woong and Yeo-jin are annoying him. And Man-ok is not someone I would want to annoy.

We end this week with Doo-hak approaching Jung-shin in the street to let her know he’s alive. We get hugs, tears, and relief, as our pair reunites and we’re left to wonder how they’ll start picking up the pieces.

The one thing I’m really loving this week is a side story thrown in about Doo-hak’s mom, Am-daek, teamed up with his former boss, Poong-ho, in a real estate venture. And no, Poong-ho isn’t running a scam this time. He says he owes Doo-hak, and so he’s trying to help Am-daek, but I smell a romance brewing. And for some reason, nothing would make me happier.

Am-daek lived such a tough life because of Doo-hak’s dad that, not only did I feel relief when he was gone (sorry Dad), but I wanted her to live happily in his absence. This week Am-daek says, “It feels like my heart is punched full of holes and wind just blows through them.” It’s a lovely line, and it points to what Poong-ho tells her: her problem isn’t alcohol, it’s loneliness — and she needs to treat the cause. I’d really like to see these two pair up in more than just real estate, and see if they can treat that loneliness together.

Yes, yes I love Doo Hak's mom and his first boss pair. They both have similar vibe that it only feel right for them to be together.

On the other hand, I am frustrated with Jung Shin because I had hoped she would distance herself from Cheol Woong after he tried to shoot at Doo Hak, but nope, she keeps stringing him along despite knowing his feelings and is forcefully shoving the "three musketeers' friendship of the past" down his throat when he clearly mentioned he doesn't feel the same.

I love Doo Hak and his buddies to the point where the only thing I want from the finale is for them to stick together.

I also noticed that their hair and costume are becoming more modern in the last two episodes and I now understand that it is because they are closer to the 90's. Thank you @dramaddictally for including that info about 90's HK movie trend

I hope the finale isn't a tragic ending, with DH dying in JS's arms. I do like a "happy" ending so I'm also hoping that DH's gang makes it to the end together.

Yeah, I wish she would drop him completely. She still values their friendship, Idky! Isn't she uncomfortable after rejecting him so many times? He should be uncomfortable too. Ugh.

Cheol Woong is relentless in his pursuit of Jung Shin and if it were in a different setting where they had not been friends, he would be considered a stalker.

This is the 1980s and 1990s, so people saw things differently. In addition, stalking in the name of love is actually quite popular in Korean dramas. In many dramas, the male lead or female lead stalks their loved ones, stalks them for hours unnoticed, and according to the creators of these dramas, the viewer should consider this normal. Even here, Doo Hak has stalked Jung Shin many times without her realizing it. In the past, when he stood in front of her house, when he followed her down the street, when he helped her without her knowing. In Doo Hak episode 12, he followed what Jung Shin was doing many times. He was in front of her office, he was in front of the restaurant, he followed her in the car. It was all without her knowledge. Cheol Woong accidentally saw Jung Shin maybe twice without her knowing. Once when he was walking in the field, once when he came to Doo Hak's house. His interest in her is obvious to her that he wants her to be his girlfriend and tells her if he will do anything for her and from whom he has really innocent information. Like in this episode from Jung Shin's friend. There's no stalking involved since Jung Shin knows everything Cheol Woong does for her and doesn't mind. She's really okay with that, because if she doesn't like something, she says it straight, because that's the kind of person she is. She wants him in her life as a friend, even though she knows he loves her and she takes advantage of that love.

Thanks for the recaps, Dramaddictally!

Well, it was no surprise that Doo-hak was alive. What is surprising is that Choel-woong & Oh Man Ok didn't spend more time tracking him down. It seems like a repeating cycle when DH's friends once again fall into their gangster ways, but this is necessary to set up the "final conflict." And, it is disappointing that DH hasn't stepped in to reunite with Jong-Shin, but is just ghosting her again.

I agree with beanie emsel's comment that Jung Shin maintaining contact with Choel-Woong seems uncharacteristic, especially since he and his guys shot Doo-Hak. CW must have protected her from bing prosecuted for arranging Doo-Hak's escape. It was also surprising that she leaned on CW to get a business loan, despite CW constantly skirting her direct question about Doo-Hak committing murder. She was there when Doo-hak shouted out that he had served Choel-Woong's jail time. JS just seems to be too savvy to have the wool pulled over her eyes twice, the other time being when Doo-hak's mom told her that CW is her biological son--and maybe three times by getting indebted to CW for obtaining that business loan.

The new character, the woman who turned herself in to the prosecutor, seems as if she'll become more important in the upcoming episodes. Not sure where that arc is headed but it will help drive things forward into the 90s. Also like the hint of romance for DH's mom.

Of course, Yeo-jin is so busy pulling strings that she will eventually get caught in her own web of lies and deceit. I'm expecting lots of revenge and paybacks coming her way as part of the climax of this drama.

Still loving the leads and looking forward to next week's episodes.

Dramaddictally,thank you for the recap.

Yeo-jin was glaring daggers at Am-daek as Cheol-woong hugged her after his birthday meal. Good job by both actresses. The drama has a great cast. It would be nice if Am-daek and Poong-ho can comfort one another .
Doo-hak and the Pier of Non-Doom (in lieu of Cliff of Non Doom ) !
Getting the old gang back together again . They are trying to introduce another lady in Cheol-woong’s life. Please break the Eternal Love Triangle ! Doo-hak and Jung-shin deserve some quality time together.
Man-ok’s time might be running out. Somebody is going to avenge ahjussi’s death.

I’ve just started watching this and am getting slowly into it. Funnily enough, I had recently rewatched my favourite bits of the “The Tale of Nokdu” but the name of Jang Dongyoon had never stuck in my mind (ok, sue me!😂) so I was delighted to find out who played Doohak. And, I’m still trying to process how the actor playing Lady Kim so well could be in this. I know. There was a lot of make up, softening lenses and weight loss involved but he did such a wonderful job in transforming into Lady Kim.

And, please indulge me a bit more. I like “The Tale of Nokdu” because of the bickering main leads, their layered and wonderful performances, how sweet they could be together as well as the real MVP, Park Dayeon as Hwang Aengdu. She made me laugh so much and I just adore that performance: An always ravenous little comédienne who was the reincarnation of an old and cranky soul. What’s not to like?

Best parts of episode 11 were at the end with the reappearance of Doo-hak in Japan (JDY looking better than ever with a much better hair style) and the fight.
Best parts of episode 12 were the reappearance of Doo-hak’s gangster pals and enemies. Nice to see them all getting into the second act.

Heh, I knew you would mention the fight! This time, we got to see Doo Hak fight someone with a katana! Changed it up a little. XD

Man Ok is not so calm and collected anymore. He must have his own side goals and all of his money must have went somewhere. I doubt it was for his ill father or his family.

Finally we have a witness to Yeo Jin's true nature towards Am Daek. I'm hoping Poong Ho will inform Doo Hak of this! He is preparing his revenge against Cheol Woong and Choong Sung, but he needs to prepare for her too.

His old friends' restaurant name "Hotel Rice Soup" immediately cracked me up! It's a wonder that Young Pil didn't visit sooner. ;P The reunion between him and Kwang Tak was hilarious btw. I don't feel bad for Young Pil at all. Hope he doesn't try to betray them this time.

Props to Cheol Woong for going after Man Ok. At least he tried.
Didn't know he was going that far.

I'm glad Doo Hak didn't take too long to meet Jung Shin. <3 All the hugs he got from everyone were so sweet.

I see a possible ship forming with Am Daek and Poong Ho. Glad she has her own business away from Yeo Jin. I think they will move on that real estate that Yeo Jin delayed on buying.

The drama is doing a good job at showing the clothing & hairstyle changes over the years. Fun to see. ^^

I want the fall of Yeo-jin to come on the hands of Man-ok. She is too arrogant and I hate her role took center stage.

The reunion scene between Doo-hak and his friends was sentimental. They weren't sad they were going to prison as much as they were devastated by his death. I am happy they didn't drag it out and Jung-shin learned the truth. I want the revenge phase already.

These two episodes were pretty good and the drama does incorporate the frequent time jumps really well. Even Cheol-woong comes across as more grown up, he has his own mind as a prosecutor and remains attached and loyal to Do-haak's mother, even though he goes along with his 'father's' dealings.

Yeon-jin has made a huge mistake. Upsetting Man-Ok, who knows her real, ruthless personality best, can only backfire.

The moment of confrontation is approaching, which can be seen in more memories of the happy youth of the three main characters. Will those memories, what they felt then, be able to save them from doing things they will regret? Because while Doo Hak's revenge on the "bad guys" makes sense, the possible revenge on Cheol Woong makes no sense. He wasn't to blame for the events leading up to what happened 3 years ago. Actually, he and Doo Hak have the same enemies, for a decade, since their school days. So they should destroy Oh and Hwang together. Only Doo Hak and Cheol Woong need to know the truth. Then some kind of happy ending would be possible for all three of the main characters. Doo Hak should find out they are related at the right moment. Because if not, there will be a tragedy between Doo Hak and Cheol Woong, in addition fueled by mutual jealousy. In the 12th episode, Doo Hak's jealousy, after returning to the country, took on new colors, much more intense, which was fueled by all the meetings between Jung Shin and Cheol Woong, who were watched from a distance by Doo Hak.So Doo Hak waited a long time until he finally went to Jung Shim's house and showed himself to her. The scene of their reunion was touching, but there was also a kind of sadness and distance. It seems to me that 3 years of separation have built a distance between them that will overwhelm them. Their lives went in different directions. I doubt Jung Shin wants to see Doo Hak doing something illegal again. She wants a normal life and will demand it from Doo Hak if she decides to give him a new chance. One more thing that struck me about this scene? Why didn't Jung Shin kiss Doo Hak? If she doesn't do that at the beginning of the next episode, I'll start to wonder if her feelings for him are still a woman's love for a man, or love for a dear friend of hers.

Maybe she was so shocked about seeing him? I thought they were going to kiss after their embrace. Hopefully in the next episode.

Jung Shin keeps rejecting Cheol Woong, but there was a tiny moment that looked like she was falling for him. Her friend witnessed their mutual giddiness during the busy phone calls. It was probably more due to the big buzz and interest in her company. I really hope she isn't falling for him. Too messy!

I guess we'll find out in the next episode. Maybe, as is typical in dramas, there will be some new scenes of what happened between the moment of the phone calls at Jung Shin's office to the moment when she and Doo Hak meet in front of her house. She came home drunk, so she must have been celebrating after work: her, her friend, and Cheol Woong. Maybe this will shed light on what her friend was thinking. Maybe that happy scene with Jung Shin and Cheol Woong was needed for future episodes. Doo Hak will probably want Jung Shin to move away from Cheol Woong since he considers him the culprit of his misfortunes. I don't think Jung Shin takes it well. Cheol Woong has always been a good friend of hers who she loves, someone she feels comfortable with even though she knows his feelings and has admitted it's selfish of her to keep him around. Is there a possible scenario in the new episodes that Jung Shin currently feels something more than friendship for Cheol Woong? Theoretically yes, because the drama presented some scenes between Jung Shin and Cheol Woong in an ambiguous way. Just the fact that Doo Hak is jealous and there are scenes where he sees Jung Shin and Cheol Woong happy together and it hurts him means something. But it can also be a deliberate to confuse viewers.
