News bites: May 24, 2023

  • JTBC greeted us this week with more pretty posters of chaebol Junho (The Red Sleeve Cuff) and hotelier Yoon-ah (Big Mouth) in the upcoming rom-com King the Land. Launching on June 17, following Doctor Cha in the weekend slot, the posters’ tagline beckons us to check-in for a ~destined~ VVIP love story. [MBC]

  • Over on KBS, our half-vampire Taecyeon (Blind) and human housemate Won Ji-ahn (If You Wish Upon Me) are strapped into aprons for some yard work and cleaning in the newest stills for Heartbeat. As a halfling, I’m guessing our hero can do things that full vampires can’t – like being out in the day – but we’ll find out soon when the supernatural romance premieres on June 26. [News1]
  • According to reports, JTBC’s Miracle Brothers has been slated for the same week, aiming to broadcast on June 28 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot. The mystery-bromance stars Jung Woo (Mental Coach Jegal) and Bae Hyun-sung (Gaus Electronics), with production led by the duo behind Beautiful World, writer Kim Ji-woo and PD Park Chan-hong. [10 Asia]

  • A scrapbook-style poster has dropped for tvN’s See You in My 19th Life, collecting the past memories of our leads and melding them into the Shin Hye-sun (Mr. Queen) and Ahn Bo-hyun (Yumi’s Cells 2) of present day. Coming to our screens on June 17, the fantasy romance also stars Ha Yoon-kyung (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) and Ahn Dong-goo (The Law Cafe). [News1]
  • TV Chosun released a new poster as well, showcasing the main cast of the time-slip fantasy Lady Durian. Written by Im Sung-han (Love ft. Marriage and Divorce) with PD Shin Woo-chul (Melting Me Softly) directing, the ensemble cast includes Park Joo-mi (Love ft. Marriage and Divorce), Choi Myung-gil (Red Shoes), Kim Min-joon (Was It Love), Jeon No-min (Law Cafe), and Ji Young-san (Love ft. Marriage and Divorce) among others. [News1]

  • TVING is planning a new action series called Study Group and the lead role has been offered to Hwang Min-hyun (Alchemy of Souls). Based on a popular webtoon by the same title, the coming-of-age youth drama will have scripts penned by Eom Sun-ho with directing by filmmaker Lee Jang-hoon (Miracle). Still in the planning stages, filming is set to begin once casting has been finalized. [Sports Chosun]
  • In the meantime, we’ll be seeing Hwang Min-hyun this coming July in tvN’s My Lovely Liar (previously, Useless Lies). The rom-com’s main cast were featured this week in the first script reading stills, including Kim So-hyun (Love Alarm 2), Yoon Ji-on (Tomorrow), Seo Ji-hoon (Revenge of Others), and Lee Si-woo (The Fabulous). PD Nam Sung-woo (Love in Contract) is at the helm with writing by Seo Jung-eun (Let Me Be Your Knight). [News1]

I want to watch, in order from most to least excited, Heartbeat (please be campy with a heart-fluttering romance), See You in My 19th Life (please live up to the webtoon), My Lovely Liar (please let Kim So-hyun and Hwang Min-hyun have chemistry), and King the Land (please be a tropey rom-com with no serial killers).

Haha I agree with everything you said, including the order of excitement!! 😁

we should make a bingo sheet for King the Land, just to see how many tropes it'll tick off (including the infamous 'insert a random serial killer storyline into a romance drama' trope 😂)

I'm hoping for no serial killers, but I think we should start placing bets on what kind of trauma Junho will have. Abandonment? Abuse? Neglect? Kidnapping? Witnessed something awful?

Oooh yes - I'll tentatively put my money on abandonment via 'one of my parents (the really kind, wholesome one) passed away and my other parent (strict, distant, cold) married an Evil Woman'

Or Evil Man I should say, depending ofc on which parent they kill off in this scenario

3

I think it's got to be connected to his aversion for fake smiles - maybe he was forced to smile through really awful things as a kid? Or his parent was forced to and he forever has that fake smile/laughter etched in his memory?

6

Someone did! And then they did it again! (I like the first one better, but I would put ALL my money on "parents dead in car accident after spending birthday at amusement park.")

This. Is. Perfect.

(okay, but what is "forehead Junho"?)

I cannot tell about him specifically, but for his generation of idols open forehead hairstyles were/are kinda rare - and likely advised against for people with big ones - and always make waves within fandoms when it finally happens. I have such dude in my fave group too))) It got better once super thick bangs era was over...

We can cross off that square now since he's already showing his forehead in the poster.

omg I love this, apparently we're all sharing one brain cell across different platforms 😂

Yes to “tropey rom-com with no serial killers”.
One wants the tropes but one will also inevitably complaint about said tropes. So I solemnly swear not too complaint (too much) and be grateful for a good old murder-free romance.

I honestly can't decide if I'm more excited for Heartbeat, King the Land, or See You in My 19th Life. Hopefully it's a tropey June that doesn't take itself too seriously!

HEARTBEAT
I’m trying to not have my hopes up this time. Heavenly Idol was not heavenly or campy and I’m concerned, can kdramas do camp anymore?? Pls don’t tell me only the Hong Sisters can do camp, cause that’s a depressing reality.

KING THE LAND
The promos look so hallmarky but hey I’m trash so give me something shiny and silly so I can tune off my brain. I would laugh if Junho’s character is the serial killer tho and this show is instead a thriller. The switcheroo would be iconic. I legitimately have no expectations…
do your worst King The Land.

MY LOVELY LIAR
I like Kim So-hyun & Seo Ji-hoon. Guarantied to have SLS tho.

SEE YOU IN MY 19th LIFE
I like the cast, seems like the webtoon is popular. I’m the most hopeful about this one.

Linarrick: Do your worst, KTL
KTL: Challenge accepted!

I love it 🤣

Just feeling sorry for myself: If KTL is not a stinker at worst and a disappointment at best, I will throw a tiny party for myself as after the few weeks I’ve had, I deserve something good. But it won’t happen @linarrick.

I’m not the biggest Junho fan (tho I do think he is a good actor) so I’m not really bothered. I do feel for you since it’s always sucks when a fav is in a stinker. But hey we never know, kdramaland has always had surprise breakouts!

I was exaggerating. I try not to call myself a fan given the negative connotations but I like his acting.

Hell yeah! I love watching stuff that don't require energy or a lot of brain cells. LOL

1. They’re really dedicated to sticking to that low-budget Hallmark movie aesthetic, aren’t they? I guess those salaries took all of the budget.

2. Please be camp please be camp please be camp please be camp…

3. Another drama I haven’t heard a single thing about until now, which is odd considering the actors involved.

4. Just need Shin Hye-sun back on my screen already. It’s been too long!!

5. Wow, we’re just competing to see who has the worst poster or something. What in the low-budget monstrosity is that?

6. I guess Hwang Min-hyun is the next big rising star. Not complaining because I do like him, but I feel like he could be a tad green at times.

7. Preferred the original title (as usual). I just hope him and Kim So-hyun have good chemistry. Maybe that will finally soothe my anger about the wasted So-yi romance potential from Alchemy of Souls.
