[Drama chat] For the love of hands

We all know that K-dramas do details well, especially when it comes to the actors/characters we are staring at for 16 hours straight. One such detail that always captures my attention? Hands. I look at them as much as I look at faces. I notice when they’re attractive and/or well kept — and also when they’ve been blatantly ignored. In dramas, I’m always surprised to see a knockout face with flawless skin matched up with frayed fingernails. And yet, it happens! (Which you wouldn’t expect when you consider all those closeups of handholding.)

But the frequency of the not-taken-care-of hand only increases my enthusiasm for lovely hands. Whether they’re the beautiful ones we’ve come to appreciate (ahem, Jinyoung!) or, more generally, if we’re noticing how they’re used to help tell the story when a hand moves into the frame (maybe touching someone’s face before a kiss) — hands are a detail I always look for.

Do you notice hands while you’re watching dramas?

Let the chatting begin!

Hands 💙💙 fingers 💙💙
Yes, definitely look at them. They can convey a lot. I like when certain scenes focus on hands. Like when it’s hesitating, pondering, supporting etc etc.
Hands with veins even better 😍

Absolutely! Kim Nam Gil's and Lee Jae Wook's hands are my faves. Jang Ki Yong also has pretty hands.😍

I also notice when there's something unusual about hands (not necessarily ugly or unkempt). For example: Ahn Hyo Seop's hands were very red in some scenes in Business Proposal, and Han So Hee has short thumb nails.

I read that his hands turn red when in an intimate scene it shows he is uncomfortable.. I don't know why lee jae wooks hands were both so red in Alchemy of souls..maybe it is for the same reason.

Yes! I notice hands IRL and in dramas. Having recently watched Crazy Love, I noticed Kim Jae-wook has masculine hands with nicely trimmed nails. I’ve always been turned off by a man with long nails. So Ji Sub also has beautiful hands.
There is an actress that appears in several dramas and she doesn’t take care of her nails. I’m sure she’s busy but I always think, gurl, someone on the set needs to hand you clippers and a fingernail file. 😬

In Our Blooming Youth, there is this scene where a soldier hands over a letter, by pushing it across a table using both his hands, palm down, to the Crown prince. The hands were so beautiful that they stood out. Park Hyung Sik has beautiful hands (he also makes them act which is impressive). Song Kang (Nevertheless) has very beautiful hands. I was also impressed by Lee Do-Hyun's long fingers and meticulously kept hands in both The Glory (there is a scene where he stitches, that is lovely) and The Good Bad mother. Choi Woo Shik's artist hands in Our Beloved summer was impressive. However, most actresses that I watched don't seem to take care of their hands at all, and many cases they are stubby, which is strange for artists who typically have long fingers (except Han Yo Joo, she has lovely well kept hands). Park Seo Joon also has lovely hands and he uses them very effectively as well.

Thank you. I shamelessly confess I pay way too close an attantion to anything that even breathes Park Hyung Sik haha! His hands are beautiful. Interestingly, he was all hands, very animated, in SWDBS while he sparingly, if at all, used them in OBY, but when he did he was very deliberate about it (like when he reaches out to Jay Yi in the pharmacy storage to assue her, beautiful use of hands).

He is a rare actor. Watch him in Heirs when Woo Bin muses what he lost - Hyung Sik looks downright stupid when he asks 'you lost your Mom's friend'? Of all the clips from Heirs, that one sticks out because it was so unexpectedly funny. Contrast that to his scenes with his Grandmother in Suits - understated depth of pain, loss and failure in that one scene at the end when he confesses to her he messed up. That scene alone made up for whatever else Suits lacked (the only time I didn't feel any chemistry between him and his female lead, though not for lack of trying). He is definitely way more than a pretty face. His hands got my attention way back in SWDBS - when he places his hands by Bong Soon's head on the wall and tells her he will protect her. More than Bo Young's pretty face, it was Hyung Sik's hands that drew my eyes. His makes liberal use of them, in a very different way from SWDBS, in Soundtrack#1.

Han Hye-jin had some well kept hands in Sacred Divorce. And, Sacred Divorce didn't fail to comment on the structure of Kim Sung-kyun's arms, or was it in my head? It was quite attractive, I must say.

I think My Liberation Notes gave us an unashamed view into the arms of two strong men - Lee Min-ki and Sohn Seok-ku. It wasn't something that was brought into focus, but dang it looked more attractive when it was sweated.

Kim Young-kwang's hands loudly pronouncing his viens as he was restrained in the hospital open space after Woo-joo's head injury. Damn, it was just it.

As per storytelling, a particular drama comes to mind. I think romantically, the hands make a statement. And there are actors who use thier hands to convey accepting or rejecting someone. Her Private Life used this one quite well. ML has trauma associated with handholding, and this was beautifully written into the romance. FL held ML's hands as an expression of thier love, like another confession different from the one that ends with a kiss. So when they had the ep 13-14 breakup and FL broke off ML's hands as he reached out to her...it really hurt to see his hands hanging out in space. I was lost in the midst of that poignant feeling of aloneness that Ryan Gold was thrown into. Her Private Life really used hands as a character here.

Hands and forearms can be very sexy!

I'm always kinda disapointed when the actor/actress looks beautiful/sexy/charismatic but his/her hands look like the child's ones.

There are a lot of actors/actresses who have great hands so I won't try to make a list.

There are some scenes that I liked :
- In Mr Sunshine, Ae-Shin's hanbock touched Dong-Mae's hand. The whole scene was beautifully filmed and YYK has manly hands.
- In Extraordinary You, the difference of height made Rowoon's hands so big. The scene of pottery was really cute and flirty.
- In Something in the Rain (Pretty Noona), Song Ye-Jin takes Jung Hae-In's hand under the table to let him know she's interested in him.
- In Healer, when Ji Chang-Wook and Park Min-Young's hands were touching when they both tried to pick up the pyjamas. It reminded her Healer's hand at the movie theater.
- In Season of Blossom, the students are on the roof top of the school, Seo Ji-Hoon takes So Joo-Yeon's hand.

It's all. For now :p

I am a pianist, so I can't help but look at people's hands. I agree about Kim Nam Gil, Lee Jae Wool, and So Ji Sub having beautiful hands.

A memorable scene involving hands comes from my favorite drama, Chuno. The ML (Jang Hyuk) says a heartfelt prayer in the temple, while the camera lingers on his hands. Just watching the hand gestures was enough to convince me that the character meant every word.

It's quite natural for us to look at hands because hand gestures are vital to communication, so we intuitively look. And in dramas or movies, the hands are made more prominent because some scenes intentionally focus on them to convey meaning. Here's an interesting TED Talk on the topic

https://youtu.be/cef35Fk7YD8

So yeah, it's surprising some hands aren't prepped for shots when there's so much thought put into shooting anything. My team creates photo and video content, and we're always very careful with hands.

I like hands, I like all type of hands, I think hands are awesome

Forgive me, my brain is mush so I am not able reference all my favourite scenes. But I’m definitely adding GOOD BAD MOTHER to the list of lovely hand scenes.

I loved Mi-joo’s passion for manicures. The villagers and particularly the women who worked tirelessly at their farms getting some well deserved self care from Mi-joo, was one those few wholesome moments in the drama.

In HOMETOWN CHA-CHA-CHA when Shin Min-a’s character is cashless and essentially broke for a day, the scene where she has to work gutting squid with older women who were masterful at the craft, again shows the amazing versatility of hands

INTEREST OF LOVE used the distance and closeness of hands to portray the distance and closeness of the relationships

Handholding whether it’s from familial love, platonic love or romantic love, when done right, always gets me.

Those intimate moments between a couple, or the sensation of touch to soothe and calm, whatever the reason, hands are definitely serotonin boost for me 😊

It's easy to recognise hands too. Han Suk-gyu and Kim Nam-gil have very distinctive hands. Jung Il-woo's are beautiful. Yoo Yeon-seok's hands evoke feelings (so do his wrists, biceps and deltoids) 😆, specially when he wraps his fingers around the sword hilt. Even Going Yoo.
Quite a few actors have attractive hands, I can't remember them all. The manlier the better

Oh, it's THE fetish, and a super common one, if that NSFW tag dedicated to it means something))) Maybe not the very first thing I personally notice in people in general and men in particular - that will always be eyes and voice - but surely in top5. Can't say I'm THAT picky in that regard, but bigger palms and long fingers with prominent knuckles are preferable. And visible veins, sorry not sorry))) Nails don't matter much, but I've noticed that most asian actors have a rather pretty long ones, which makes me forever jealous lol. Few days ago I've read someone describing certain actor's hands as "corpse pale and skeletal looking" - granted it was in fanfic so such gothic purple prose was deliberate - and after having a great laugh at this spot on description I had to admit that this is probably the type I'm the most into. Plus they look so mind-blowing in black and white photos - another thing I'm rather obsessed with. Ah, just thinking about it gives me the feels I certainly do not need this early in the morning, let alone on Monday...

List of actors with sexy hands I know would be too long, but I can name a drama that's like half dedicated to just OTP's hands conveying all that needs to be conveyed - FLOWER OF EVIL. If you saw it, you surely know what I'm talking about, and if you didn't yet then all of you hands lovers certainly should!

I've been putting off Flower of Evil, opted to go for The Glory instead. Typically, crime and thrillers are what I fed on for years, so have been taking a break. To be honest romance trumps all, but they went strangely absent in the last decade across the world. The last legit one was Avatar. If Tony Stark and Pepper Pots are the only couple giving the romance vibe in a decade, we are truly starved (who watches Pretty Woman every now and then to get that fix? anyone?). So when K-drama burst into the scene, well, I went off the grid for almost everything dark (who can not emit a sign of content when Joon Ho and Young Woo silently, awkwardly, adorably serenade.....). Which reminds me, Park Eun Bin and Kang Tae Oh have beatiful hands, and the way Eun Bin used her hands in Attn Woo is copy book artistic excellence. And of course that very funny scene of her eyeing Joon Ho's forearms to touch him to check her heart rate haha (it was borderline creepy but so innocent at the same time)! Or that briliant back hug scene when Joon Ho grasps her hands tightly to calm her down.

FOE is MUCH more romantic than whatever I've heard about THE GLORY - it is thriller, but it's a family melo/romance thriller, the genre that's been largely forgotten for ages now after its heyday in 80s and 90s (not to confuse with all the romcoms with "sudden" serial killer twist). Honestly, if it wasn't a TV kdrama, it'll probably be an erotic thriller even... Level of sensuality certainly fits the bill.

Ah, PRETTY WOMAN, my mom's fave movie... Not a big fan myself, unless we're talking about OST, but it's an iconic piece of cinema nonetheless. I'm more of a dark action fantasy romance kind of girl - to my family's endless "where the hell did THAT come from?" confusion)))

Yeah, ATTY WOO did a great job at hands scenes too. I didn't finish the show (writing went too preachy for my taste at some point), but it probably is the latest notable example from a modern kdrama pool. Sageuks are a league of their own, of course - hands and stares alone often do the most of swoony work there.

Romance is almost non existent in The Glory, and whatever little there is, it's unconvincing. After watching The Good bad mother, I am becoming convinced that Lee Do Hyun is not an actor who comfortably emotes romantic scenes (or he is newly in love and can't seem to get his emotions lined up for his female leads. Oh he kisses well and cries prettily though). I am yet to watch anything of Lee Joon Gi so will definitely give it a try. For romance, my fav is actually a Hindi movie - called 'Jab We met'. It's all melo, OTT, and has two beautiful looking leads who have sizzling chemistry but it also is outrageously funny and has one of the most outlandishly cute female leads of all time. Give it a watch.

Some actors really do struggle with romantic scenes - LJG being one of them actually lol. But FOE is an exception thanks to the right costar, good PD and idk, maybe he just matured over his 20+ years career? I love him for other reasons, so it was a nice surprise at the time.

Damn, it's been AGES since I watched anything Hindi... Not sure I'm ready, but I will write down your recommendation, thanks)))

1

@gikata: The only romance I have remotedly enjoyed coming out of Indian commercial cinema in the last 10 years was the 'Bahubali' series (they got the passion of the characters so very right in the second part, the first half of the first part sucks though, so you can FF it if you want, though some parts are mprtant to get the story progression right). However, a small Hindi film named 'Sir' blows it out of the park. It's heartachingly beautiful, very low on melo, and very high on actual content. Highly recommend.

2

honestly the only time i notice their hands is when its pure red due to the cold weather. I find this kinda funny as we all know that Korea is well-known for their cold climate hence the characters wearing about 1-2 layers of clothes causing our poor actors to freeze their arses off BUT still being able to pull off their role so well :')

Mmmm... I'm fond of holding hands shots - particularly the delicate Asian woman's hand in the large man's hand. I recall IU once complaining that her hands stopped growing before the rest of her, leaving her with little hands. The response (from someone off-camera) was that those are the types of hands than men most like to hold.

I usually don't notice hands that much, but I *have* noticed the face/hand contrast. It's not just some frayed nail ... sometimes the face looks like a teenager, 17-19 years old, but the hands look like those of a 35-year-old ... who has done all the dishwashing in a busy restaurant by hand for 20 years. They look dry, red, wrinkled. Just using cream after hand wash would already help a lot. Considering all the care put into faces and clothes, the maltreated hands are such a strange phenomenon.

I always find I'm drawn to looking at hands/fingers in general especially more so when it's a music related drama. As a piano player, ever since I could remember, I used to desperately wish for those long, delicate looking fingers that a lot of pianists seem to have.
