Murderous mafia games in Night Has Fallen

As darkness creeps across the night sky, a vote is cast under the moon’s watchful eye. Which unfortunate soul’s end is nigh, leaving the rest to hue and cry? Following after its cookie thriller, LG U+ is continuing its foray into drama production with the ensemble drama Night Has Fallen. In this psychological horror, a class of high school students on a school retreat soon find themselves stuck in the midst of a never-ending mafia game. Trapped by the curse that befell the training center, the students must engage in a cutthroat battle of wits in order to survive each night.

Drawing upon her exceptional critical thinking and observational skills, heroine Yoon-seo — played by Lee Jae-in (Racket Boys) — searches for an escape route. UP10TION’s Kim Woo-seok (Finland Papa) joins her as Joon-hee, the steadfast and dutiful class president. Joon-hee’s always able to maintain his composure even in the face of adversity, but his classmates’ deaths rattle him deeply, leading him to waver for the first time.

As for the rest of our class, we have Choi Ye-bin (It’s Beautiful Now) as Jung-won, the top student in the whole school. She may rank first in book smarts, but her popularity is quite the opposite. Jung-won’s individualistic independence keeps her apart from the rest, until the mafia game begins to teach her the value of cooperation. The same can’t be said for So-mi — played by Jung So-ri (Move to Heaven) — whose true colors start to show when the game doesn’t go her way.

The school bully Kyung-joon, played by Cha Woo-min (Weak Hero Class 1), is likely headed down the same path. His power-tripping tendencies are just one step away from disrupting the game and throwing a wrench into everyone’s strategies, adding a layer of unpredictability to a situation that’s already fraught with tension.

Conversely, though, the game may be a breath of fresh air for someone else. As Kyung-joon’s victim, the outcast Da-beom — played by Ahn Ji-ho (All of Us Are Dead) — has finally found himself on equal footing. Though Da-beom may appear to be a vulnerable pushover, he’s been suppressing his rage all this while, and the mafia game might just be a chance at catharsis.

It’s kill or be killed, and the innocent villagers must eliminate the mafia before any more blood is drawn. Will there be a doctor, trying to save others while flying under the radar? Will there be a detective, determined to sniff out the culprit at all costs? And will there be unexpected roles to throw the players into chaos? It isn’t yet clear what the rules of the game are, but I’m already wondering whether the mafia are students or some other supernatural force entirely.

Helmed by PD Im Dae-woong (Search), the 12-episode drama Night Has Fallen is slated to premiere on U+ Mobile TV later this year.

I feel darkness is creeping in to a lot of dramas at the moment and I expect this to be out in the shorter days longer nights season. Hopefully there will also be some lighter shows out at that time too.

There are variations in rules. There were a couple years in my early 20s when my friends and I would play this. It was a lot of fun and involved a lot of yelling...but being stuck inside a mafia game is a lot less fun!
