Premiere Watch: My Lovely Boxer

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Sports, drama, human
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Our next sports drama lands on Monday, and I couldn’t be more ready. No one does sports dramas quite like K-dramas, as they’re particularly good at being character-driven affairs that make you root for the heroes even if you don’t understand the actual sports at hand (*ahem*). My Lovely Boxer takes the non-underdog approach, with Kim So-hye playing a boxing prodigy who rose to the top and then suddenly disappeared from the limelight. When cold-blooded sports agent Lee Sang-yub searches her out to bring her back to the ring, it’s for self-serving reasons… but how much do you want to bet by the end he’s in her corner more than anyone? Also starring WINNER’s Kim Jin-woo and Park Ji-hwan, this drama is currently on my to-watch list in the “possible hidden gem” category.

TL;DR: Sports drama with heart, featuring the boxing ring, Kim So-hye, and Lee Sang-yub

The writer, cast, etc don't scream "Must watch!" at me, but I'll give it a try anyway. AFTER Lovely Liar but possibly before I manage to finish this week's Counter 2.

I'm not confident in the writer to not include a love line between our agent and boxer.

That's my hesitation, too. I'll wait a while and see what happens - but the show could squeeze it in any time up to the end, unfortunately.

Yes, I am having flashbacks to Mental coach Jegal too😬

Um, well, I'm guessing y'all haven't seen the trailer then? Or did I misread it as there were no subs?

I'm more worried how our boxer will fare in the ring without any muscles. Or is it that they're worried she'd stop being lovely then?

One of the three trailers on Viki has English subtitles.

It is the utter lack of muscle tone for me. You are going to tell me she is the best, I need to believe it. Just like they did in bloodhounds, this is why I have no interest in this.

She has muscles, believe me. Boxers build muscle strength from repetition (like hitting the punching bag for years) not from weightlifting. Boxers are generally lean and not muscle bound.
I am a boxing fan and it doesn’t concern me in the least that she isn’t showing ‘muscles’.
I can tell from the trailers that Kim So-hye has been doing some serious training for this part.
I mentioned in another comment sometimes in sports dramas there is not that much ‘sports’. We will have to see. Presumably because she was away from the ring for three years (an eternity in sports) she will have a lot of training cut out for her to get back in shape. That is probably where a lot of the ‘sports’ stuff in the drama will occur. Just speculating.
I am a boxing fan and Lee Sang-yeob fan. That is why I will be watching.

One thing I have yet to figure out is what the actual age of her character will be. We know she left the sport for three years but at what age did she ‘retire’?

If the writer omit this aspect, it changes the plot of the original story. The drama is based on the book, and in it is their love story.

Watch the trailer if you have time in the few hours till it airs.

I did not know it was based on a book. I will not read it first as more often than not I end up complaining about the adaptation. 😀

I don't mind an adaptation changing a story, especially if it means changing problematic aspects. The power imbalance between coach and athlete bothers me, especially with the big difference in age and life experience implied by casting a (real-life) 24-year-old woman with a 40-year-old man. The show will have to work hard to convince me that it's not an exploitative relationship. I really like Lee Sang-yub and would like to see him as a romantic ML, but this may not be the right vehicle.

And I'm with @kafiyah-bello in wondering how those stick-like arms can pack enough of a punch to knock down a hamster, let alone the tall, muscular man in the preview.

Whoa. I didn't know that. That's a whole lot to digest.

I will watch it for LSH!

I don't mind a relaitonship between the leads if it's well written not like in Mental Coach Jengal...

But the biggest issue is KSH, she never looked athletic, but she will be perfect for the lovely side.

I like what you wrote and I hope you are right about the "possible hidden gem"! I like sports shows so hoping this will be just that.
