UEE needs an Independent Life in new teaser

The first teaser and new poster for upcoming weekender Hyo-shim’s Independent Life just dropped, giving us a peek at our titular lead played by UEE (The Reason for Our Break Up) and the unglamorous family life pushing her to seek her own autonomy.

Hyo-shim is a skilled fitness trainer at her local gym, but, despite her top physical form, she’s bent under the weight of providing for her family. After her father walked out, it had been up to her to support her mother and three brothers. While this task might have been noble when she was younger, after years of thanklessly slaving for her family, she’s ready to finally live for herself.

Now exactly how bad could her family be, you may ask? Well, the teaser introduces us to each member of her chaotic family. We start with Hyo-shim’s mom, played by Yoon Mi-ra (Red Balloon). While she is quick to brag about her filial daughter to listeners, it’s also clear that she depends — almost too much — on Hyo-shim to fix her problems, such as when a spat involving her, a neighbor, and a pail of suspicious brown liquid ends up requiring the police.

Next up are her three brothers. The youngest brother, played by Kim Do-yeon (Strong Underdog), is an aimless twenty-something who spends money he doesn’t have on a convertible car, much to Hyo-shim’s fury. Not faring any better is her older brother, played by Seol Jung-hwan (Red Balloon), who’s been studying for the bar exam for several years and relies on Hyo-shim for allowance money. Finally, her oldest brother, played by Nam Sung-jin (The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won), has a wife who refuses to pay mom’s medical bills when she ends up in the hospital, passing the buck, once again, back to Hyo-shim.

So yeah, it’s pretty bad. But Hyo-shim is done swallowing her feelings, as seen in the last shot of the teaser, where she lands a punch on her youngest brother in a fighting ring. It’s time for her independent era to begin!

Written by Jo Jeong-seon (Mother of Mine) and directed by Kim Hyeong-il (The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won) Hyo-shim’s Independent Life will premiere on September 16, following the end of The Real Has Come.

I have a very bad track record of getting excited about a weekender but then always end up disappointed some time before episode 10. I would love, love, love it if this one was the exception. The director certainly gives me hope!

The PD is outstanding, but the writer concerns me, having written the weekender FATHER, I'LL TAKE CARE OF YOU, which was not the best.

UEE has previously been the star of a very successful weekender as the FL of OJAKKYO BROTHERS- which is one of the all-time best weekenders. She has been in many dramas since then- many of them very good. She has the chops to carry a show even if it is not well written- and with the help of an outstanding director I have confidence that she will do it.

Yes. To me she seems perfect for this type of role - a woman stop slaving for others and start living for herself. She has a knack for carrying the whole show. She has that look of having gone through a rough patch, but you can also sense it from her characters that she is not a give-up type of girls. That makes a great weekender FL character. Plus, she has a certain charm to her that always makes her characters endearing and easy to root for.

I think that she is a perfect fit for this role also- and also like how much healthier she looks now. Which is even important given that she portrays a fitness trainer. The fact that she has had to weather some real adversity means that she can bring her own life experience to the role- even if it was not the same challenge it still built character.

I already hate the brothers. Take out life insurance and hire ToD.

I hope that her brothers get their comeuppance in the course of the drama. I particularly wonder what the deal is with the oldest brother as it sounds like our FL is having to shoulder burdens that in Korean society would actually fall on him.

As for the middle brother- many people fail the bar exam. It is truly a test of both knowledge and character. I passed on the first try (twice, in two different states). Preparing was a lot of work and study but the test itself requires a truly disciplined approach towards time management and also thinking. The stress is tremendous. It would be interesting to see if this is part of the middle brother's story or if it will simply be presented as a background fact. It would be a bit of a shame if the story did not explore the reason the brother has failed because it would say so much about his character.
