Yoon Kye-sang meets his match in Day of Kidnapping

The upcoming black comedy Day of Kidnapping (based off the novel of the same name) has dropped a new teaser showcasing a strange partnership between a hapless kidnapper and a precocious prodigy. Playing the not-quite-criminally-minded Kim Myung-joon is Yoon Kye-sang (Kiss Sixth Sense), and by his side is his victim-turned-daughter Choi Ro-hee played by Yoo-na (Green Mothers’ Club).

The teaser starts off with a literal bang as Myung-joon runs away from an exploding car. He laughs heartily while Ro-hee sighs at his thoughtlessness and reprimands him for leaving behind his escape vehicle. The text on the screen describes him as a heodang and binggu (a.k.a., a scatterbrained dummy), and there’s something a little awkward and clumsy about this wannabe kidnapper.

In contrast, Ro-hee stares down Myung-joon without an ounce of fear and confuses him with her linguistic prowess. She makes him sign a contract guaranteeing her safety, and from this brief glimpse, we see who’s the one truly in charge. (In case it wasn’t clear, it’s Ro-hee.) Unlike Myung-joon, she’s intelligent and clever — a genius on all accounts.

How exactly, then, are these polar opposites related? That’s the question the teaser poses, and Ro-hee answers with a forced laugh, “He is my dad.” However, the dynamic between them is a far cry from a loving father-daughter relationship as we see the unruly duo grate on each other’s nerves. Always on the receiving end, Myung-joon appears fed up with his pint-sized guest, but when Ro-hee catches him mid-tantrum, he stops. The teaser ends with Ro-hee poking Myung-joon’s face and asking if he really is her dad.

Directed by PD Park Yoo-young (A Model Family) and written by Kim Je-young (Cheese in the Trap, the film), ENA’s Day of Kidnapping is set to premiere on September 13 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot.

They have made the trailer look fun and games so I will see what we get closer to the drop but so far it looks like it will be an interesting watch.

I definitely have my eye on this one. Yoon Kye-sang is always fun and this looks like a kind of role that I haven't seen him in yet! And a young girl who is absolutely the one In Charge is a trope I can totally get behind.

Yoon Kye-sang was an early standout from my first years of watching K-dramas in 2015, and after 698 dramas I still have vivid scene memories of "Beyond the Clouds" and the very visceral "Last". He does intense so well that I can only imagine what he'll serve up in a comic kidnapping drama. I'm sat.
