[Cast Away] Secretly superpowered brothers

Don’t you just hate it when you’re short a few million dollars to produce a drama with your dream team of actors, writers, and directors? *pouts* Well, we found a way to scratch that itch!

Introducing the new Dramabeans community series Cast Away — where Beanies can advocate for their chosen actors and creatives in imaginary roles.

How it works: Each week, we’ll share a hypothetical K-drama plot with you. In the comments, discuss who you think is the perfect cast to play the roles in this imaginary show.

You can also go wild and introduce more characters, rename the show, pick your favorite director, etc. Who knows? Maybe our collective wishing will manifest fantasy casting into reality.

This week’s K-drama plot: Secretly superpowered brothers

Two brothers are abducted by aliens while hiking. The younger brother awakens to find all his memories gone. Instead, he has developed the ability to turn invisible — but only when he hums the national anthem. He uses his powers to enlist in the NIS and help catch a mysterious new supervillain who can read minds (but only when he wears mismatched socks)…

Look, we all know Hyung is the villain because we like our dramas funny, angsty, and bromantic. Who’s your dream drama-bros pairing? *cough*Lee Jong-seok and Kim Kwon*cough* There’s also space here for a mismatched-socks-crocheting villain’s sidekick and a harried NIS director who’s tired of hearing the national anthem, so cast away!

Feel free to request a plot line for future Cast Away posts. We’ll do our best (beep-boop!) to serve a fun twist on it.

This sounds like a no brainer that "Penthouse" writer/director can pull off with good ratings.

Do we also have a love triangle between the brothers and a girl who is a also an agent, but is a secret child of some high ranking official who usually ends up being the villain?

Kdrama titled The Surviving, Miraculous, Successful Superpower Bro Duo... Before the Hollywood Fame
Gong Yoo and Ha Do-kwon as the two hiking brothers who abducted by aliens. Gong was the younger brother who woke up and found all of his memories gone. Afterwards, he had a sister (played by Honey Lee) who was a famous veteran actress who found fame in Hollywood and also, he was half-American, half-Korean actor who about to get married. Gong was then first to enlist NIS and then, while Ha Do-kwon found alive safely after defeating alien from abduction, he joined Gong to catched a superpowers for a mysterious new female supervillainess (played by Jo Woo-ri) who had similar to Wonder Woman and then, when the two brothers had the most number of biggest weapons that all successfully attacked against her, both will received the heroic award after Gong's memories completely went back and then went on to becoming the first ever real-life superhero duo with superpower abilities who moving into Hollywood career (just like Gong's sister did).
The four supporting characters are Christian Lagahit as Filipino-American producer-director who was one of the people supported Gong and Do-kwon, Suzy Bae as Gong and Do-kwon's manager who also had a superpower abilities like two brothers did, Wi Ha-joon as restaurant owner who endorsing this two superpower brothers and Ra Mi-ran as the only mother for both of this two superpower brothers. Our PD/director and scriptwriter was Squid Game's Hwang Dong-hyuk.

I have read "superpowers" and "brothers" and my mind went immediately to Miraculous Brothers (2023), so I only can imagine the little brother as Bae Hyun-sung 😄

What about the older brother? He didn't get any superpower? He decided to never go out because he has PTS, so he, who used to love hiking and camping and going outdoors, now has to learn to be in his room using a computer (he is not familiar with new technologies) and ends up becoming friend with another girl who says she was abducted too and is also afraid of going out.

The hyung could be Kang Hoon.

Of course in my adaptation of the story Hyung is not the villain.
The villain is Kim Min Seok.

Originally, I thought that is a crazy idea. But then, I won't be surprised to see it coming to a real drama.
Let's see who can pull that chaos off. What about Kim Bum as the younger brother and Shin Sung-rok as the villainous Hyung?

Well I mean, I'd just go with every dream brother pairing I already have, whether the drama is my cup of tea or not (which means I won't be writing it, and I won't be pairing it with a writer or pd either), and whether they're a perfect fit or not... you know what, they'd all work anyway, I'm sure.

So thats, uhm,

Kwak Dong Yeon x Kwak Dong Yeon
Yeo Jin Goo x Kim Min Jae
Wi Ha Jun x Kim Kyung Nam

... and I had a newer duo recently and I've just forgotten it because I'm suffering from the worst case of brain fog right now NOOO

Wait, why is it funny?!?!! Lmao
I swear. I've talked about my dream (not dreamy, dream) pair up of YJG X KMJ as twins and how versatile they would be in like any genre, cos the twin archetype I pair them with would work in so many, for literally forEVER, multiple times on here too. No matter.
I'm glad my (previously less popular, now taking the lead in the polls) pair up is being received so well (cc: @isagc) 🤣🤣🤣

But honestly this drama idea doesn't tickle my fancy very much (sorry @mary, still love you xox): I just like twins and brothers.

If I have to be honest, maybe because I have never been impressed by KMJ's acting, and the thought of him standing wide-eyed while YJG acts his heart out is a bit... I don't know, funny but not in a good way... 🙈🙈

Again 🍎 ≠ 🍊

I love Kim Min-jae, I really really do and that is precisely why I won't cast him opposite Yeo Jin Goo. Both of them as twins ... that's a fever dream ... no, never.

📝😂🤣🤣
Well! Okay then!

To me, they have really similar facial features, and they typical excell at completely opposite roles, which is why *I* want them to play twins with juxtaposed personalities 😂

Ah, well ... okay then. I bow in deference to your better judgment my Queen.

Can I cast Lee Jong Suk and Woo Bin but 2012 version? I think this drama would work better with young energy.

NO, WAIT, I know my dream drama: Jang Geun Suk, Lee Hong Gi, Young Hwa, Lee Seung Gi.

—Superhero: Seung Gi (Hyun Jae)
—Villain: Hong Gi (Min Jae)
—Sidekick: Young Hwa (No Rae)
—Tired director: Geum Suk (director Cha)
—Hyeon Jae's sunbae: Kang Ki Young (this man is gonna be in every single one of my dramas. I'm Shin Won Ho PD and KKY oppa is Sung Dong Il 😂).

And Heechul gotta do a cameo to have the whole gang reunited. He can be a civilian in trouble or something. Maybe he gets caught in the crossfire between Hyun Jae and Min Jae.

OST part 1. FT Island
OST part 2. CNBlue
OST part 3. Duet: Geum Suk and Seung Gi
OST part 4. DAY6

LOL I love this!

Oh, and the roles specifications:
Seung Gi is a superhero because he saves people. But he doesn't act like a saint or anything, he's kinda annoying (but cute and funny) like his characters from YAS and Hwayugi.

Hong Gi gotta bring back the jerk from Bride of the Century but with the softness of the Hwayugi. AND after the big reveal, when he finds out SG is his hyeong, he starts acting like our cute and fun Jeremy (You're Beautiful). He loves his bro!!

Young Hwa can bring back to life the pretentious guy from You're Beautiful and the fun, but also kinda mean, character from Brain Works.

Geum Suk oppa... he doesn't need to act, he can be himself. That would be perfect for his character.

And Ki Young oppa can decide himself. I would ask him what does he want to do with his character. Take inspiration from his character in At 18 and make him a wise sunbae? Or take inspiration from Oh My Ghostess and make him mean but harmless (and hilarious)?

I know this is just my imagination but I get so excited LOL

Writers - Hong Sisters and Penthouse writer. Who else can pen this beautiful nonsense whilst defying logic and sense.
PD - Penthouse PD.
I can only think of duo villains - Gil Hae-yeon, Hero Jun-ho and Jo Jae-yeon as NIS deputy directors.
Our villains lackey - cameo lord Lee Jun-hyuk.

Our protagonist is NIS Director Jung Woong-in. NIS good guy lackey - Ha Do-kwon.

The NIS agent tasked with bringing in the superpowered kids...
Rookie Bae Hyun-sung and veteran Kim Seon-ho paired with powered villain Kang Hoon.

The superpowered guys to be brought in, both good guy and villain guy - Kang Hoon and Ha Joon 2. Plot twist, Ha Joon 2 is Gil Hae-yeon's son. He was mistaken by the alien abductor Yoon Kye-sang for Ha Joon 1 and has now been turned into a human alien thanks to a kiss by alien Jo Bo Ah. Cue to our triangle that's out to set confusion in our FLs love life.

At the NIS communications centre guiding our agents, we have Healer Ahjumma Kim Mi-kyung and Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim's Jin Kyung. Together, this team of women successfully guide our agents through the unfamiliar territory.

I love how you’re actually worried that this drama might actually come into existence with your dream brother duo…and you won’t get to enjoy it.

Any chance you could give us a 250-word-or-fewer-word summary of the brother drama you would like to see these two in? I’d looove to know!!

I don't know yet!

But I do imagine Rain as the explosive but extremely competent hyung, and Junho as the more reserved troublemaker.

I would like a Memories of Alhambra-type show... with things happening fast and spiralling out of hand, and the brothers saving the day in the end. But in a very non-cool way.

I want one of them to have a long-time girlfriend and the other one just starting a tentative relationship near the end. Yes, I'm greedy! I need brotherly love, old love, and new love, all at the same time!

I will notify you if I am hit with any more inspirations. 😌

Ok, Seo In-guk is the hyung in mine. You know he would rock those socks. Plus, I sort of believe that most of his characters can secretly read minds - he’s just got that look. And I think it’s Shin Jae-ha taking the role of the younger brother/NIS agent. Let him be a good guy for once!

Younger brother’s superior at the NIS has got to be Yoo Jung-ho, playing a character VERY similar to his Agent Kim from Crash Landing on You. I have spoken before of my desire for a spinoff show about his character from that drama and I’m not going to miss my chance to turn it into a full-blown fantasy. If Son Ye-jin wants to make a cameo wrangling twin girls in episode 7? I’m certainly not going to discourage her (or the idea that this is all in the same universe).

Oooh, I almost forgot: Kim Seul-gi as our villain’s sidekick/love interest for younger brother. Since none of these characters is going to end up as a villain at the end anyway and they’ll have to join forces against the actual Big Bad. She starts to get close to Shin Jae-ha to get info and ends up falling for him, obviously.

SQUEE!! Shin Jae-ha as the good guy for once! Yes, please.

I mean, with @jls943’s inspiration—and because I associate the two in character style, so they might as well play brothers—I’d pick Ahn Woo-yeon as the hyung, then, leaving space for Shin Jae-ha to be the spunky NIS agent.

Title of the drama? The Puppy Brothers.

They both survive in the end, of course, and their efforts actually begin peace talks that bring about the long-sought reunification…who said k-dramas can’t be uplifting!?

Brothers Kim Woo Bin and Hong Jong Hyun have a contentious relationship. After hiking to sort out the problems of their parents, Kim realizes Hong has lost all his memories. He cannot face his parents’ wrath at Hong’s condition so he hides out at his ex-girlfriend’s (Shin Min Ah) who is just starting a new relationship with immature, chaebol son Park Sun-Ho. Kim is upset with Park’s motivations toward his ex but everyone is stunned when Shin starts teaching Hong the national anthem in order to restore his memories. Park uses his connections to get rid of the brothers by dumping them off at the NIS because “it deals with a lot of crazy sh*t.”)

Choi Min-sik plays the head of NIS. He owes the Park family for his promotion. He assigns a nepo-baby political appointee with bizarre personality, Lee Yuri, to "babysit" Hong to see if his powers are useful (since she is a conspiracy nutcase), while Song Kang-ho (who was past over for promotion to NIS head) is in his office brooding until a super Villain criminal case is rumored to baffle the lead team (Jung Sung-il and Park So-Dam). Song worms his way into the investigation to regain his pride and reputation. The super villain is always one step ahead of the law as he cracks highly classified codes and passwords to steal millions of dollars in bank deposits, state defense secrets to sell on black market, and blackmail politicians and rich families.

Lee finds out that Hong has to keep humming in order to stay invisible, which a) is annoying and b) time limited due to his wheezy breathing. Other investigators tease her for being in charge of the Freak Show. In order to advance her career, Lee uses Hong to go around the office to spy on other investigators with awful results as Hong cannot remember clearly the information he learns. Lee keeps bringing Kim back to the NIS to try to improve Hong’s memory skills but that does not work. Kim wanders around NIS like an intern, making jokes to staff and being a nuisance.

Because of the huge pressure on national security, Song starts his own “team” to solve the case by taking the Freak Show under his wing. Slowly, Hong remembers bits and pieces of his life: his father could have been a party leader but refused to use highly damaging dirt on his rival; his mother’s very wealthy family went bankrupt during IMF; his brother was fired from a large national bank for unknown reasons; and the brothers fought over one girl in college (Shin Se-Kyung, who was traumatized by men who only saw her for her beauty and not her intelligence so she vowed to punish society for its misogyny.)

Lee meets SSK to get background on Hong, but she finds Shin highly suspicious as she has amassed great wealth from her beauty company to fund anti-society causes. Lee reports that she thinks SSK could be the super villain but Kim uncharacteristically laughs at that suggestion, claiming a “mere woman” could not be so brilliant.

The super villain is caught trying to destroy...

... SSK and the Park family. . . when Hong whispers into Song’s ear he knows the criminal then points at his brother, Kim. Kim got his super power during the same alien abduction. One is definitely Seo In Guk bc nobody can "enter" the characters skin like him. he truly becomes "another person".
LOL I did not even read the prompt and I thought mind reading.
Gong Yoo can read minds but Seo in Guk can turn invisible.
Or Seo In Guk + Rowoon
but mindreading + invisibility will somehow have to be combined on the greatest spy operation of history. except how to "listen" through someone elses´ invisible body? secret technology of course. so they need to unite and get an M. who is the true villain? someone developing a super-AI that would steal everyones´ identity and deem humans "a background noise". Humanity would lose power. they would need to find something A.I. cannot do without a physical human, and intervene.

some other pairings that would be good:

Lee Dong Wook reunion with Kim Beom because I cannot get enough of these two
Lee Soo Hyuk and Choi Woo Shik

Or maybe Choi Minho as the invible one cause invisibility doesnt mean you become smaller and when he is forced to hide in a place where he physically possibly couldnt fit, ouch. pressed in some wall crack well ok it is torture much. maybe his one arm could fit. Plus lee Dong Wook as mind reader "Why is this wall saying I can` t breathe?"

Younger Brother: Wie Ha-joon, because he looks cute and innocent but good at beating people up.
Hyung: Kim Young-kwang, because he's so good at "are you good or bad?" characters and angsty should be his middle name.

Here's the final scene if the genre is tragedy...

Li'l bro, standing all messy and bloody (but invisible) with gun in his hand pointing at Hyung, fallen on the floor with bloody and broken leg. Unfortunately, the crocheted striped green sock on his broken leg was dyed red with blood, matching it to the red sock on his other leg.

Suddenly a radio somewhere crackled playing the real national anthem. Something broke in Li'l Bro's brain and memory poured in to make him realise: all these time he was a brainwashed aliens' pawn (because they want to invade the world via KPop) and HE is the villain! (Yay for twists!)

Hyung suddenly saw Li'l Bro, clutching his head, materialised in front of him. Wasting no chance, he dragged his battered body, gritting his teeth and inching closer and closer to a gun...

Li'l Bro head flashed with memories of the good people he took down, then the memory of laughing together with his hyung on the fatal hike, then a childhood memory of Hyung singing happy birthday while he blew the candles on the cake...

Hyung grabbed the gun and took the shot.
Li'l Bro opened his eye, smiled with relief at his impending death and thought, "Thank you, Hyung." Which Hyung heard because there were green specks on his socks and he could still get random slivers of thought. He screamed, "No!" but helpless to stop the bullet rushing to Li'l Bro's head...

Blood spattered.

THE END

I read comments of Shin Jae-ha as the younger brother (@jls943) and Kang Hoon as the hyung (@IsaGC), but not together, so I wish to cast them together as my two brothers. I like the fact that Hyung can read minds, but I want our suspecting him of being the villain to only turn out to be a red herring. The real villain can be the NIS director played by Park Ho-san.
