[Beanie Recs] Vampires of dramaland

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

Questionable ending aside, I looooved Heartbeat and the whole vampire angle just made my day. I’m looking for another vampire-y drama but I suddenly realized that it’s one fantasy scenario that dramas haven’t done as much as you’d think. Any good drama recs for me?

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

There's only one major vampire for me. And that's Lee Dong-wook. Any other vampires come second. Taec-yeon with his latest stint in Heartbeat is this close to overthrowing him with the vampire looks. Lee Dong-wook still takes it though.

Other recommendations :
Blood.
Scholar Who Walks the Night. You'll be treated to a deliciously looking villain in person of Lee Soo-hyuk.
Orange Marmalade.
Vampire Prosecutor.

And then there is Kim Eun-sook's Kingdom.

Where can I watch a good quality version of Vampire Prosecutor? It's been on my list for ages, but all I can find is a very low def version.

Good drama recs? No, but if you're looking for vampire-y dramas and don't care if they're as bad as Heartbeat, then I recommend Blood, which was campy fun and Jung Hae-in was adorbs, and Orange Marmalade, but only watch the high school beginning and end and skip the sageuk middle.

Jung Hae-in you say? 😆 So now I can stop wondering why Blood keeps showing up in my recommendations… *adds to watchlist*

Blood was the first time that I had seen Jung Hae-in, and he triggered my "protect him at all costs" mode.

Ok, but is he worth suffering through Ahn Jae Hyun and Gu Hye Sun?

Depends on how much you love Jung Hae-in.

Scholar Who Walks The Night for Lee Soo-hyuk being a vampire villain in a silky bathrobe the plot. It's not perfect but it's got Lee Joongi as a vampire in a sageuk so.....

Having both LJK and LSH as vampires in a Sageuk makes it about as close to perfect as one can get, I think...

The romance was less than perfect.

Here come the C-dramas… 😝

Interestingly enough, while I know there are other Korean vampire dramas (@jerrykuvira’s on the case, but I’ve not seen them so cannot make recommendations)…none of them were really discussed while live-watching HeartBeat or used as comparisons. That’s at least a data point I can offer our Beanie requestor!

Prosecutor Vampire was pretty fun. But we are still waiting for the season 3.

Orange Marmelade was cute. It was more a highschool drama for me.

Bite Sisters was nice for the girls friendship.

Vampire Idols was so ridiculous that it was pretty fun.

Scholar who walks the night. Lee Soo-hyuk nailed his role as an evil vampire.

I remember so many YouTube videos of him, but I think I didn’t get to his scenes in drama itself as I dropped it before he appeared 😄

With all the white face makeup, half the kdramas look like vampire stories. But to answer the question, I enjoyed Vampire Prosecutor, which made me a Yeon Jung-hoon fan. I haven't watched any others beyond the first episode.

There're enough vampires in K drama land, but the only one I can manage to finish is Vampire Prosecutor. Like the rest, still waiting for season 3.

I'm not into vampire shows that much but I had to watch Vampire Prosecutor just for the title, and fortunately it turned out to be a good show.

Out of Competition Honorable Mention:
From the US: DARK SHADOWS (1966-1971). Afternoon soap opera starring the late, great Jonathan Frid as vampire Barnabas Collins. The original network (ABC) run of DS was 1225 episodes according to its Wikipedia page. Apparently it is available to view on a number of streaming outfits.

Dark Shadows! Great rec. I cut my teeth on that show. It had wonderfully cheesy, spooky music.

Dark Shadows !! Lol, a vampire soap opera (mid day airing). The show caught the attention of my self and my four elder siblings , we would gather around the tv and watch . What a trip down (fading) memory lane.

Are zombies fall into the same category with vampires? If so, Kingdom is the winner -- not that I watched many, but it's just so GOOD! I don't like fantasy, but the show is really intense which gets me stay seated and watch the whole time, plus the cast is great.

Heartbeat was one I'd recommend... until the ending. An ending for me can ruin the whole show. And that one did. For me, at least.

Vampire genre - I highly recomment Vampire Prosecutor and Scholar Who Walks the Night. Youn Jung Hoon was great in the first one, an oldie but a goodie. The latter has Lee Junki and Lee Soo Hyuk, nuff said.

For US show, we have Interview With The Vampire and the CW show, The Originals. These were not cute as Heartbeat but I still I liked these.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the spinoff Angel
Not a Kdrama. Sorry, not Sorry. It does share a lot of themes common with Kdramas though: Strong female lead(s), family, epic romance, sacrifice, slice of life, humor, and character development to name a few.
To tie things back to kdramas - once I completed the iconic Taiwan drama Someday or Oneday (which was so good that it's getting a Kdrama remake A Time Called You), I realized that I've seen this plot before. Then it dawned on me - Angel season 1 episode 8 "I Will Remember You" - probably one of the most memorable if not the most memorable episode of the series.

Angel got really good (the series, I mean). The finale Not Fade Away was amazing, the type of finale where you think, wait, why is this the finale?

Has anyone mentioned "Vampire Detective" (2015)? I'd recommend it...

Also, in the Zombie genre, just finished "Zombie Detective" for the 2nd time. Really good show! Choi Jin Hyuk is awesome in it!

so strange I just thought yesterday " I sghould finish watching Vampire detective!" but I cannot find any streaming source that will not crash my computer (not illegal, just running too slow).

but Zombie detective >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Vampire detective.

Um cant think of any besides already named but there are some evil spirits who suck souls or energy instead of blood. Like Bring it on, Ghost, the vet character I think? and um... the Mom in Arang and the Magistrate. I think there are more such? Soulsucking creatures? ah, tale of the nine tail. the CEO.

Google searched of "bloodsucking + kdrama" (HAHA) also turned up a miniseries called Vampire flower from 2014. And hello, Francesca, from 2005, a sitcom.
