[Beanie Recs] The revelation that is Ong Sung-woo

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

I’m not even going to pretend I’m not just watching Strong Girl Nam-soon solely so I can stare at Ong Sung-woo. How did I not run into him in dramaland yet? Are there any other dramas of his you would recommend, or am I setting myself up for disaster?

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

At Eighteen was pretty cute. I don't remember well but overall it was a nice highschool romance.

More Than Friends was pretty bad, run away!

I didn't watch Would You Like a Cup of Coffee? but I think the comments about it were pretty positive.

For a moment I thought I had never seen any of OSW’s work and then recalled I did see and enjoy his performance in WOULD YOU LIKE A CUP OF COFFEE (2021) (Viki US).

Would You Like a Cup of Coffee is like a soothing balm on a sore throat.

Nothing really happens...but also, somehow, things do happen. Situations change and people change. There is love present on a number of different registers, none of which shouts High Drama.

It is one of my very favorites to re-watch when I would like to settle my emotions down.

More than Friends was not that bad... but it is more in the category of The Third Charm, Interest of Love and perhaps Nevertheless... with leads not always likeable... and sometimes (often) frustrating.

I loved The Third Charm and Interest of Love. I was happy with the fact Nevertheless gave us real college students but less with the toxic love relationship.

But More Than Friends was bad in every corners for me.

You can check the upcoming drama Goryeo Khitan War. He is playing the king's role

It's not him but Kim Dong-jun, who was in More than Friends too.

Weird. I know I have seen him. But I haven't seen any of his filmography.

He's a kpop idol and was in Wanna One, the group of the Mnet show Produce 101 season 2. There were Park Jihoon (Weak Hero Class 1, Hwang Min Hyun (My Lovely Liar) or Kang Daniel (Rookie Cop).

Thank you but I haven't seen those either. Maybe I'm really mistaking him for someone else.

I have seen him in the lead role in "Moment of 18," but I am not sure about his acting as it still feels green.

Maybe in the movie Seoul Vibe with Yoo Ah In?

Haven't seen that one either 😅

I watched it mainly for Yoo Ah-In, but even he couldn’t save it. Not even with Ko Kyoung-Pyo and Lee Kyu-Hyung backing him up.

He was really sweet in 'Moment of 18'. Also 'would you like a cup of coffee'. Both are def worth watching.
I dropped 'More than friends' as I didn't like his character.

I watched him in Would you like a cup of coffee?. That drama is a pure slice-of-life show. He plays a quiet young man who wants to become a barista starting as an apprentice in a little corner cafeteria in a working class neighbourhood.

He grabbed my attention but I have not watched any other drama starred by him yet. I want to watch Moment at Eighteen.

I have only watched him in Moment of Eighteen before SGNS. It's one of the better high school dramas. He was a bit green there, is more assured in SGNS.

According to Asian Wiki, he’s only been in four films and four dramas to date.

Films:
Starlight Is Falling
20th Century Girl
Life Is Beautiful
Seoul Vibe

Drama Series:
Strong Girl Nam-Soon
Would You Like a Cup of Coffee?
More Than Friends
At Eighteen

A pretty small sample size. I’ve seen him in Seoul Vibe and Would You Like a Cup of Coffee?, and can’t say he made much of an impression beyond a likeable personality and a pretty face. I’ll keep him on my radar.

Thank you for the filmography.
I have watched all of his dramas and none of his films. 😀

I find Asian Wiki indispensable. It’s so helpful in keeping characters straight, especially in shows with complicated plots. They make it even easier to identify individual characters by using the actors’ images from the drama itself, rather than a generic headshot.

Thank you for the pro-tip. Indeed that is very useful since some actors in-charachter may look dramatically different from what they do IRL and once we are able to identify them it is easier to research on Google. 😄

I didnt discover Ong Seung Woo in a drama but a variety. He was great in JTBC's Traveler S2 with Kang Ha Neul and Ahn Jae Hong as they backback across Argentina. I watched this during the pandemic, due to the restrictions it was my little way of appeasing the travel bug. Its worth a watch.

Shin Seungho - despite playing an abused rich boy who was both pitiful and prideful - acted Ong Sungwoo off the screen. Shin was a revelation to me even if I found his character suffocating and nerve-racking.

I really liked "Would You Like A Cup Of Coffee", the quiet, slice-of-life feel and life lessons imparted from relatable incidents makes it a good watch.
