Live Your Own Life: Episodes 28-29 (Drama Highlights)

And Hyo-shim is finally a free woman! She makes good on her promise to move out and takes the plunge. Co-dependency isn’t easy to shrug off, so she struggles to distance herself, but Hyo-sung volunteers as tribute and tells her to enjoy her independence while he handles their family. So that’s just what she does. With some help from Tae-ho, she gets her new apartment set up, and then she begins preparing to finish her university degree. Go, Hyo-shim!

The family basically devolves into madness without Hyo-shim. Only Ru-bi is having a grand time watching the chaos unfold as the family flails around throwing tantrums and trying to figure out how to survive on their own. Making everything more chaotic, Hyo-joon announces he’s done trying to pass the bar. Being a lawyer was his dad’s dream that his mom pushed on him, not his own. Well, that helps explain the decade of failing. It’s a little late to quit now, though, after ten years of his family supporting him for nothing in return. Mi-rim steps up and gets him to try the exam one last time instead of selfishly expecting his family to cater to his every whim.

Meanwhile, Sook-hyang is still in her kidnapping era, but it’s not going so well for her. Tae-hee, who has been confined to her room, escapes and reunites with Hyo-do. Then, Sook-hyang’s underlings botch halmeoni’s attempted kidnapping and almost get brought in by the police. Meanwhile, Tae-ho gets closer to the truth about halmeoni when he runs into one of the medical staff who oversaw her “care” while she was a hostage. She tells him in no uncertain terms that his grandmother was confined for three years and Sook-hyang was behind it all. It looks like a chaebol war is brewing.

I think this drama is finally taking off!! 🥳🎊
The going in circles and stagnation have finished and there is SPEED and tempo! There is also fun and cuteness... and drama... I love it. 😊
Fingers crossed it stays good! 🤞

Also, it's only last weekend and now that the tempo is there (and I use less and less my ff button)... ať least that's my impression.

Rubi's family analyses were spot on 😄 and she should follow her own suggestion and change her career plans.

Yay for Hyoshim and her university plans!!

I have actually noted that Ru-bi's talents would be even more suited to being a judge- and that she has the brains to get there.

Her talents would be wasted in medicine- and this is emphatically not a put down of any physician nor the practice of medicine.

Ru-bi appears to be the writer's spokesperson. As in - listen to Ru-bi - these are the characters I have created and this is their story. it's a good technique for summarizing the last 25+ episodes, especially for those that didn't pay much attention to the various brothers (or avoided any scene with the mother because of her screeching).

I don't know what I enjoyed the most - oldest oppa taking down HyoJun like a champ with the old hag flailing in the background, or TaeHo being all goofy and heart eyes for HyoShim 😄 Wish the showmakers had taken 10 episodes instead of 25 to build up the story, coz what we are getting now is delightful! I'm thoroughly enjoying watching HyoShim's whole family run around like headless chickens 🤣

HyoDo and TaeHee really looked like true lovers reuniting. HyoDo's feelings for her seemed sincere and it looked like his relief wasn't only for the wealth she represents. I guess we can say with confidence that Yeom is TaeHee's real father. When that secret comes out, it will be interesting to see how HyoDo reacts.

She may hate her mother - but she loves her brother and Tae Ho. And this would mean she's not related to Tae ho.

Do I care? No, it's Tae Ho who - but I'm glad that no matter what, she is Tae Min's sister. TM loves her and she loves him and if i was writing this drama, I would begin to sprinkle in more brother/sister moments, even if only by telephone.

Actually it is a good thing for her mom that this happened while Tae-min was on his honeymoon- imagine what would have gone down if She had still been locked up when he came home- and how would Anchor Lady have taken this as well? She actually saved her mother from utter humiliation by escaping. This really clinched it for me- her mom is an idiot.

Episode 28 was a step back as far as Grandma and the marriage of Tae-min and Su-gyeong. Grandma stupidly gets on the phone and tells TM’s mom to cancel the marriage because otherwise TM’s new Father-in-Law will take over Taesan. How does the marriage do this? The purpose of such a marriage is to form an alliance where each side can be assisted by the other without having to make a large financial investment and take over. Tae-min’s marriage is a perfect example of this: He gets to shut down publicity over what happened three years ago and also acquires future good PR for the company in the future without having to actually buy TV Live. Does writer-nim not understand this? Also, somehow Evil Henchman and four thugs appear where Grandma is within a minute of the call. Has Taesan secretly invented the Transporter from Star Trek? (If they have then whatever problems Taesan used to have are over) We have now had an ‘emergency wedding’ rather than the serious adult conversation which Ms. Choi purchased at a high price and now we have a fit of paranoia on the part of Grandma (and writer-nim) leading to her capture in a move which defies the laws of physics. Can you tell that Oldlawyer is not happy about these things?

Let me be very clear about the irrational thought attributed to Grandma. Unless Tae-min's family handed over a huge chunk of stock as a bride price for Ms. Choi this marriage does absolutely nothing to advance Chairman Choi's chances of taking over Taesan- and, if anything should reduce his reasons to want to.

As Grandma is re-captured we have a very interesting conversation between her and Mr. Yeom- who has been with her family a long time after being taken in by the family (together with Ms. Jang) and who says he has a lot of blood on his hands thanks to her. (Picture Oldlawyer with his skeptical eyebrows raised at these so interesting comments) Alas, next the police show up to spoil Mr. Yeom’s moment. Lady MacBeth was not pleased. But why does she see her daughter as someone she needs to get rid of? Even our Chairman thinks that marrying her into the other Chaebol group is senseless. In any case, our Maknaes are re-united, after Tae-hui’s mom provided Hyo-do with a very rough lesson. He should now understand that Tae-hui is not a free ticket to Easy Street.

These two ‘capture and escape’ moments were intended to re-set the story lines regarding Grandma and Tae-hui/Hyo-do. It may work for the macknaes but does not work for Grandma because it is based upon a false premise.

I think this was to show that Lady MacBeth is stupider than she thinks.
We don't know much about Taesan and TV Live and what actually went behind the wedding talks, but I somehow trust Grandma, who was leading Taesan for a long time, if she suggests that Sookhyang didn't think things through. (I also don't think that father of TV lady is without ambitions and would give his daughter for free.)

I agree that Chairman Choi would not sell his daughter for free. However, Tae-min would not buy her by selling the company to him with a large block of stock- that would be self-defeating- and you can bet that it was Tae-min who handled the negotiations. A promise of a large amount of ad revenue would be much more likely.

Arguably Shakespeare's Lady MacBeth was not that sharp either- and certainly did not think things through from the beginning.

I also think that Taemin is smarter than his mom... but... I wouldn't underestimate Chairman Choi either. Grandma issued warning and I think there may be a danger looming from Choi's side. Plus Taemin still may be an artist at heart. Rubi could be a better choice as the Taesan leader 😁😁

Perhaps the single most frustrating thing about Tae-min is that he is actually in a position to be the very greatest of all Artists: A Great Entrepreneur. Someone like Bill Gates. Henry Ford, or JP Morgan. The people are not motivated by greed, but a desire to create. Early in the Audrey Hepburn film SABRINA we are actually given a perfect description of what these people are really about as Linus Larrabee explains what drove him to take his families modest fortune and turn it into Real Money: “I create something new, something that never existed before”. But Linus is proud of the fact that his art (even if he never calls it that) has a benefit that other artists can never match: “ And men who never had a dime now have a dollar, and children who once ran barefoot now wear shoes”. Linus is not motivated by money but by the desire to create, although, like some other artists, he is unscrupulous about the means that he uses to do it (and from this comes the plot of the movie). The attitude of these men towards money may be simply summed up by the words of the great Oil Tycoon H.L. Hunt: “Money is just a way of keeping score.”

Rubi is very smart but even she does not have the potential of Tae-min because she does not have that creative spark.

If Tae-min is not living his own life it is simply that he does not see his situation clearly, just as he does not see the value of his wife. He thinks that he is still in chains when in fact the shackles have now been struck off.

0

I don't know @oldawyer, I think Taemin is leading Taesan from filial duty, but his heart and desires are elsewhere...

I also fear the world of chaebols and oligarchs is rather ruthless and Rubi may be a better fit...

3

I agree that at this moment he is doing what he is doing from filial devotion. He needs to step back and objectively see his situation for what it really is, and then pick up the entrepreneurial brush and palette and start creating something new.

I would put Steve Jobs in the true artist/enterprenuer category since his visions were design, function and user experience over price points and market share.

1

Steve Jobs is a perfect example of this, just as you said.

Henry Ford figured out how to take a luxury good (the automobile) and make it affordable and useful to a large number of people. Before him Carl Benz (in 1886) invented the automobile and, in order to raise cash to produce it named it for his banker's daughter: Mercedes.

Cornelius Vanderbuilt created a new way of organizing railroads and brought an ordered and economically efficient system to the utter chaos which had previously prevailed,

Bill Gates wanted to put a PC into every home.

1

Let me be very clear about the irrational thought attributed to Grandma. Unless Tae-min's family handed over a huge chunk of stock as a bride price for Ms. Choi this marriage does absolutely nothing to advance Chairman Choi's chances of taking over Taesan- and, if anything should reduce his reasons to want to.

Exact same reaction here - in real life, there is no way that the marriage means anything from a power standpoint (unless, as you say, the bride price). But i don't believe writer cares about that - there are many legal and/or business statements in this drama that are non-sensical and inserted only for some sort of character motivation.

OR, (and I swear that I will stop thinking about Su-kyung and her position in this drama but can't help myself), Su-kyung may believe that TV Live will stop any further investigation but Daddy Dearest has no plans to give up his leverage. That seemed to be what Grandmama meant - Chairman Choi cannot be trusted. Which, of course, flies in the face of his former claim to be a close friend of hers.

As for the interchange between Yeom and Grandmama, I still think chances are +50% that he either is - or will be - on her side in the fight against the Chairman and Dragon Mom. The way he finessed the order to end "the era of Choi Myeong Hee." The big revelation to me was that it was GRANDMAMA who pressured the police to end the investigation into the accident in Daegwallyeong Pass. She doesn't want the truth - whatever that may be - to be exposed. Can't wait for Tae Ho to find that out - probably around Episode 48 or so, lol.

Your points are very well made. Chairman Choi did not actually say that he was a friend to Grandma- he said that they had a special relationship. Perhaps she was his greatest enemy- which is extremely important in those cultures where the stature of a man is determined by the size of his enemies. Maybe 'Frenemies" of some sort?

I believe Grandma is right about this.

The story potential here really lies in our newest Mrs. Kang because if we know anything about her it is that she is ambitious in her own right and not simply her daddy's minion. Whatever would diminish her husband would diminish her as well. It is here, in their common interest, including dealing not only with her mother-in-law but also most certainly her father as well that our newlyweds may start to find common ground and learn to work together. They start as enemies but have to work together, becoming first partners and then, as they come to trust each other. a real love can ultimately bloom- but this is a long process which would likely take the entire remaining episodes (assuming that this is what the writer has in mind).

"a special relationship".

Okay, I missed that nuance at the time.

The story in your head (finding common ground and Su-kyung refusing to do Father Choi's bidding) is the only one I can think of that might work at this point - but as you said, w/only 20 episodes to go before end game, that doesn't leave much time for that change to begin evolve.

As you said below, a marriage or annulment would be catastrophic which is why I don't understand why the writer went this far. It really is the perfect set-up for the frenemies to lovers story but why leave such a small amount of time to build up to that point? All of the other couples have had far more screen time together to at least introduce the relationships.

(assuming that this is what the writer has in mind).

@oldawyer, sometimes I feel like you are Lucy to my Charlie Brown. Describe the potential good story arc and then pull up the football reminder that writer is in control, not us. 😂

Required fields are marked *

I was just about to tee up that football.....

One of the things I disliked about the timing of the wedding is just what you said- it would have been better if it were earlier in the drama. However, with the help of my fellow Beanies I have come to understand that the show has had to go through two course corrections which has now resulted in Ms. Choi being turned from a bit player into our now freshly minted new Mrs. Kang (with the actress recently getting a cover story in a magazine even).

The writer has done two previous Weekenders that I know of: FATHER I'LL TAKE CARE OF YOU and MOTHER OF MINE. The first was frankly mediocre but the second and later one is pretty good. At the very least this writer knows how to write a weekender but truly had an unforeseen and tragic problem crop up and seems to have been scrambling ever since, as has the excellent PD. So even the writer may not have always known where this was going but these most recent episodes strongly suggest that solid ground has been found to bring this show back together. However, that in turn means that some of the earlier 'clues' may no longer apply as you have essentially suggested.

At least, whatever the final form for this story, it seems to have come together and appears to finally be moving forward.

1

My theory for a while is that the TV CEO's push for marriage is a way to get inside information on the family to push them out of Taesan or at least take control of the Board. You can start a hostile takeover without owning shares. Corporate espionage can come from an unhappy marriage partner.

You may be right. If Ms. Choi were portrayed as simply being a spoiled and emptyheaded Chaebol daughter, I might even favor this idea.

But this show has suggested that she may be the one woman in this show who is just as smart- and even more ambitious- as Ru-bi. She would personally lose too much doing that IMHO (but not necessarily in the opinion of writer-nim?).

I see her making Tae-min's life miserable in some other way.

Tae-hui's mother does not understand that her daughter is not a tradition bound child who will do anything to keep the company from scandal or losses like TM. Tae-hui is the exact opposite so forcing her to marriage to a middle aged man for prestige and connections is a non-starter.

I don't even know how she imagines she could force a marriage. This isn't the Joseon era where a woman's consent is not required. How do you do it? Drug her and drag her to the altar? Have her new husband keep her a prisoner in his house after they are married? How long could he keep her locked up. I can't imagine a reasonable scenario without involving the groom, would would likely not want to go along with this.

As others have said, she is a scheming conniving evil witch, but not very smart. She went from a lowly bookkeeper to a Chabeol Madam and power has gotten to her head.

You are absolutely right about the 'forcing Tae-hui to marry' idea. She can threaten to cut off the credit cards, but Tae-hui has just proven that she can live without them.

But she is not just dumb- she in fact is just as panic stricken about the events of three years ago as her alcoholic wreck of a husband. She is acting irrationally. She might even see this as a way of getting her daughter to a sheltered place of safety before things blow up.

But to what a twist on what used to be- she cannot force her daughter to marry but she can force Taemin to do so.

i'm circling back on Daddy Choi and his plans for TaeSan Group. We agree that it doesn't make sense on it's face, but. . . While searching for a scene w/TM, I came across a phone call between Dragon Mom and Su-kyung and then went back in my notes and here's the sequence of events,

*Three months earlier: Daddy orders Su-kyung to dump her current boyfriend.
*Tae Min leave prison. Very soon thereafter, he is on the phone with someone, agreeing to meet and thanking him for the support.
* TaeSan stock price "soars" because of his release.
* Lunch w/two dads and eventually Su-kyung. Lots of thank you for Choi's support of TM. Choi: "I had to step in and lift him up"
* Various meals and meetings between TM and Su-kyung.
* Phone call (after the 1st TV investigative report) between Dragon Mom and SK, SK says: "I don't belong to Taesan yet. I'm my father's daughter. That's why I couldn't go against his will." [lol, but after that, Mom says "I'll kill [her] spirit by grabbing [her] hair."]

I don't know that this gets us closer to a rational reason why the marriage by itself would somehow allow Choi to take-over Taesan, but Grandmama apparently thinks he is corrupt enough/capable enough to do it. Perhaps he has been buying up TS stock for years. Shell companies? Maybe he controls financing (loans) that can be used as leverage. Maybe he's bought off some of the Directors/shareholders.  Actually, the method doesn't matter because i've learned that in kdrama land, rich people apparently have some magic power to do anything they wish, regardless of whether it's legal or even financially smart in the "real" world.

My primary thought is that the writer has indeed done the groundwork in showing that Daddy Choi may have had a plan all along, beginning with his very public support of TM while in prison.

1

Required fields are marked *

There is still no reason in all of this why a marriage would facilitate actually taking over Taesan- but a lot of reason to see that Chairman Choi has done his best to arrange for the very highest level of cooperation between the two Chaebol families including having a son-in-law who is deeply in Chairman Choi's debt. I would point out that it was not Chairman Choi who had him sent to prison, but it is Chairman Choi who saw to his immediate public re-habilitation.

Clearly Grandma sees the marriage itself as a danger but I do not see how, unless it is simply from too close an association with Chairman Choi. The truth is that I am still scratching my head over this.

Among these items I think that the most revealing may be SK's statement that "I don't belong to Taesan yet". But now she does. Mom plans to kill her spirit? Let her try. Actually, that might be the start of changing her relationship with TM.

I still believe TV CEO plan is a takeover. He is in the information business and information, rumor, speculation move markets. The media likes to build up then tear down public figures. SK inside Taesan gives him direct information that could be used later on to tank the Kang family or leverage control over the company.

Hyo-jun takes the departure of Hyoshim as his perfect excuse to give up on the Bar Exam. But he finally admits that he never wanted to be a lawyer in the first place and states that he is now going to be living his own life. He acknowledges that he has been a parasite for ten years but still does not seem to have any sense of responsibility for not having had the courage to stop sooner, before he had leeched off of his family for so long. However, we also got the truth about why his mother pushed him into the law: As a sort of revenge on Her husband whose ruin of her life actually began when he failed the Bar Exam and had to become a high school teacher. Question: Were bad mothers the theme of this past year?

But turns out that Mi-rim specializes in mean students- and that she misses him a lot. Also, she needs his skills as an acting coach.

The new story of Tae-min and Su-gyeong is also starting as they returned from their honeymoon. Tae-min is ignoring her and she is visibly unhappy. How can I put this politely? It looks like Tae-min is sticking to what he said, and that this marriage has not been consummated. If handled well this should be quite a story.

The one thing that these episodes did show us is that Tae-ho has now learned enough to be even more suspicious of Tae-min.

But we did get more of UEE smiling and Tae-ho smiling back. Which is a good thing.

The one thing that these episodes did show us is that Tae-ho has now learned enough to be even more suspicious of Tae-min.

And how did he learn this? Because writer created a fake marriage to raise his suspicions. Which is why I don't believe there will be a TM/Su-kyung story - she's a plot device. So, because of the wedding, he dons his best Chaebol Costume and sneaks into TM's office, looks at his calendar, threatens the reporter and then tries bribery, swaggers into the coffee shop and threatens the detective.

I've given up on the TM/Su-kyung story because I think the writer doesn't have the imagination to create something fun and meaningful with these two. They were fun to watch in the beginning, but not now. I posted my rant below. 😀

In K-dramas a Fake Marriage is clearly acknowledged as such by both parties going into it. It would completely alter Tae-min's character to even agree to such a thing and the first thing that writer-nim established about Su-kyung is that she wanted a "real marriage" (her exact words). It would turn the entire story upside down to suddenly make this a fake marriage.

Instead, what Tae-min proposed was essentially a sexless minimal marriage. Given the expressions we say on his bride's face he has so far enforced that.

The public impact on both Tae-min and Su-kyung of a divorce or annulment would be catastrophic and Grandma should know this, but she went totally irrational instead. I think that it was her momentary lapse into irrationality which was the almost deus ex machina plot device: It was to provide an opportunity for the conversation she had with Mr. Yeom. That is why it was a catch and release story arc which, as I noted, actually defied the laws of physics.

I don't think a divorce or annulment would hurt Choi's family at all while it would be bad for Taesan. Choi is the youngest daughter so her position is not as great as her older brothers. Choi could publicly claim she learned of all the "evil, criminal and shameful" activities of Evil MIL, Evil FIL and husband after the marriage.

I also think lost in the irrational plot lines is the fact that Taesan group is not performing well; that there is some board division; the reason Evil Mom wants to marry off her children like commodities to shore up the balance sheet.

It has only been a couple of weeks since we saw Ms. Choi transformed into a true 2FL: That was the moment when she stormed into TX Fitness because our FL's co-worker had stupidly posted embarrassing photos online without her permission- and they had gone viral to the great professional damage of Ms. Choi. Such photos posted five years earlier would have meant Ms. Choi resigning her position altogether.

Getting a divorce would be far worse for her. It would be career ending. It might not hurt her family but it certainly would hurt her- regardless of her explanation. She is ambitious in her own right and even likely in opposition to her father if need be. She already had the goods on Tae-min's family- she did not have to marry TM to get this information. She was willing to cover this story up if TM marries her. So he did.

It is precisely because she is both ambitious and because she has two older brothers who are in a stronger position than she that she is more likely to oppose her father, if need be, than support him. This is a truth dictated by the internal politics of her own family precisely because of those two older brothers. She has to secure her own power base that is not dependent upon the goodwill of her father- which is non-existent based upon Grandmother's description of him.

So, assuming she is rational or becomes rational (right now she is unhappy with everybody) her logical path is to help Tae-min even if she is furious with him at the moment (which she no doubt is).

1

Actually, now that TM is essentially running Taesan Group, they are doing much better. Can't remember which episode it was, but on the news they reported that the company had a big turn-around since his return.

My notes DO say that there are 3 subsidiaries and a market value of 900 billion dollars. That's in the realm of Facebook and Tesla, but less than Amazon.

0

Now that Kathyn51 mentioned it, she is right: Now that Tae-min is back Taeson is getting back on its feet as recently noted by an anchor who, for once, was a man, not Ms. Choi. This was in the last few episodes.

1

Minor correction - there are THIRTY SIX subsidiaries. not sure what that means in Korea, but in the US (and I worked for a Fortune 100), that meant A LOT of separate entities to keep track of - legally, financially, sales, profit/loss, and thousands of employees.

1

I feel the same way. There weren't many ways where she could have had a conversation with Mr. Yeom. They needed to introduce that information in the story. She being in hiding and he being bound to try to capture her, they weren't going to have a sit-down conversation in a cafe, which is the usual plot device for revealing crucial information to the audience. So a capture/release as you put it was the only solution, even if it made little sense.

I cannot think of anything else that might have worked.

1

I assume Grandma has Yeom's phone number. She could have called him after her demand to Evil Mom to cancel TM's wedding in order to stress the real threat to the family business since Yeom is the family "fixer."

I must be a bad person. I was happy to see Hyo Do get beaten up. I was ecstatic to see Hyo Jun getting beaten up.
Hyo Do cannot possibly grow if things just went his way and he lucked out by marrying an heiress.
Hyo Jun just seemed to see this as an opportunity to dump the bar exam.
I used to think the cousins’ grandma had some grand plan, but it doesn’t look like it at all.
This is likely to be an unpopular view, but I am not too fond of Tae Ho as the cute boyfriend. It seems forced and unreal. When he is dealing with his cousin and the family, he seems more relatable.

The writers seem to currently have him let loose with his puppy/cute personality only with people he is very fond of, so far it's his grandma (in flashbacks) and Hyo Shim. Tae Min also indicated in one of his "lectures" to Hyo Shim back in Ep 12 that people usually find Tae Ho easy to get along with because he is cute, social and fun, so he must have been like that when they were younger, before his parents were murdered and grandma kidnapped. Looks like we'll see more of the serious side from now on anyway.

Not pushing his chaebolness? What do you call handing his business card to the shop manager if not pushing his status and position? Dragging Hyo Shim to a furniture store that has ZERO relevance to what she desires or needs? It was all about HIM.

Oh well, Tae Ho has now clearly embraced his bi-polar stage. When he sneaked into TM's office, threatened the detective, and now (based on preview) plotting his revenge against TM - my reaction was FINALLY, Oh Se-gi (Ha Jun character in Crazy Love has arrived - and his downfall came for the same reasons - he blamed the wrong person.

I agree with you about not leveraging his Chaebol status, at least with HyoShim. If he had his way, he would have bought her own gym, and bought her a luxurious house to live in, just like his Aunt offered when she thought she was after her son.

But Taeho understands her and knows that would drive her away. So he swallows his opinion about the shabby apartment that she picked and supports her by helping her clean it and move in. He picks activities that she can relate to, like shopping for groceries. He only gave her the gifts that she asked for (the new appliances).

The furniture shopping was just his attempt to woo her with the not-so-subtle message that this will be your life once we marry. But he's not being pushy about it, but keeping the idea front and center.

I think she is starting to accept this idea of having a rich boyfriend demonstrated by her request for the new appliances.

Both beatings were merited. But the own given to Hyo-do was the most useful as a wake-up call because he now knows that there will be no something for nothing deal with Tae-hui- or anything else. Lady Macbeth may actually have finally gotten through to him. Will it be enough? I hope so. At least he has had to decide that Tae-hui herself is of value to him.

My theory is that the final test will be when she loses her status as Chaebol Heiress when it is discovered that her father isn't her father. Even if she is not completely disinherited, (that seems cruel), they will have little use for her husband. Tae-Hui seems intent on making her own way, so she would insist on his help. So he will have to give up his lifelong dream of a shortcut to success and will have to earn it.

Dragon Mom gotta do what Dragon Moms do. It now propels Tae Hee and Hyo Do's story arc forward - it had to be done.

Writers are giving big hints that Yeom is Tae Hee's father and that's okay with me. But from the beginning, he has been her "father figure". HE was the one she called demanding money - not her own father.

When she escaped the house, she looked at her drunken father for a few seconds - it was one of those times when i wished the writer would script in some "internal" thoughts. What was she thinking at that moment?

While writer is building redemption arcs for the Lee family men and even their mother, she is clearly abandoning Choi Su-kyung behind – I am so disappointed. “Slaughterhouse.” The marriage must be “cancelled” (annulled, I presume). Tae Min will never stay with her. TV Live will “eat alive” Taesan. The final insult – almost zero dialogue by the actress in the last 4-5 episodes. What was the point of the wedding?? I guess to raise suspicion in our “hero” Tae Ho? Why do I fear that Su-kyung is going to drug TM and try to get pregnant – will the writer really sink to that unimaginative level?

Speaking of which, is Tae Ho forgiven all sins because – grandmother died? Insulting Hyo Shim for 10 episodes, deceiving his cousin, sneaking into Tae Min’s office, threatening the detective, trying to bribe people (first pregnant lady and now the reporter). Has writer truly redeemed him at this point so that he can pursue his revenge plot and treat people so shabbily?

Meanwhile, I’m unclear if Grandmama’s back story is changing or simply expanding. All of a sudden, It seems that grandfather was never violent/cruel – he was merely “a roaring tiger”. She feels bad that she never asked her sons what they wanted to be – and they were “good” sons. Huh? I guess Episodes 1-12 – including the golf club head hits - never happened. The interchange with Yeom was interesting – I still think he’s on her side because every step he has taken w/r/t Tae Ho has been to shield him or delay Sook-hyang’s schemes. He’s walking a tightrope.

The most important info regarding Grandmama came from the detective – it was Grandmama that interfered with the accident investigation! She never planned to expose her son and DIL – she wanted it hushed up. So Tae Ho’s determination to expose the family black sheep is going to weaken Taesan Group publicly, thereby placing Tae Min and TS Group directly in TV Live’s cross-hairs – everything that Grandmama does NOT want. And this last story arc is one of the few reasons I’m still going to watch every weekend.

The other is Leo Hyo jun and Jeong Mi Rim – I really like the way they support each other, tenuous as it may be at this point. BTW, remember when Grandmama told Madame Seo to contact “attorney JEONG”. Coincidence?

Another post coming later re: my speculation on why the Grandparent and Daegwallyeong Pass stories may have changed.

You may be correct in the way the story has changed- and you have pointed out the inconsistencies which are the evidence of that. But one problem I have with this is why was it necessary for Grandma to be locked up?

There are several routes that writer-nim could take regarding Tae-min and his bride. What you fear might be one of them. The one thing that I am certain of is that neither of them sees this as a fake marriage. What they do from here with it is an open question.

Locking grandmother up? That one's easy - from the beginning, Grandmama was locked up because she opposed her son's elevation to the Chairmanship once her younger son died. According to Jang Sook Hyang, Advoisor Choi "controlled the great Taesan once."

I haven't taken good notes on some of the backstory with current Chairman and how many times he (or his wife?) committed fraud or other criminal activity [two are clear: the slush fund/scholarship fraud and whatever he did that forced TM to go to prison] but I believe there is a 3rd one?? Now that holidays are over I might find time to re-watch.

Early on, it was implied that Grandmama might have evidence that they were the cause of the accident - but recently, that seems less likely. But, write might revise history again. 😊

The third slush fund is the one they have created using Grandma's foundation. The plan is to have Tae Ho take the fall for it and go to prison for a long time. This would also take down Older Brother of course, not that they care, he would just be collateral damage.

TaeMin seems to know or suspect as he tried to order his cousin to close the foundation, but would not tell him the full truth. As usual, TaeMin keeps his thoughts to himself and refuses to let people in. This was one of the reasons he was so unsuccessful with HyoShim

Grandmother definitively does know what they are planning, as she tried to threaten them not to move against TaeHo in her first phone call to the Witch.

Hmm, the possible 3rd one I referred to (and perhaps my memory is bad) was something that happened right before the original Chairman (grandfather) died - perhaps the reason that Vice Chairman was going to take action??? I thought it was different from the older scholarship/slush fund, but could be wrong. i need to re-watch - I am rather obsessed with tiny details.

If I call correctly, Grandma and the missing director (the man who went to America for cancer treatment) once controlled the board. Grandma was an advisor (a title fitting a retired board member but major shareholder). She may have gotten that title as she had to give up or sell shares to pay the 50% inheritance tax on her husband's passing. It was the car accident that put Evil DIL in a position of power that she did not want Grandma to give the board any objections to the current chairman's appointment. Locking Grandma away and not having her speak to board members may have led some to believe she passively consented to the appointment.

I still have hopes for the story of TV Lady, that it starts next week(s)... don't crush it yet @kathryn51 ! 😫

As for Taeho (and I'm replying here to your other comment as well), I think you and I have just different point of view 😅
I see a boy in love who wants to be with his girl and who tries to take care about her and actually limits himself a lot. He is not taking her to steak dinners in posh restaurants, but eats curry in her small apartment. He is not arranging a spacey equipped apartment, but respects Hyoshim's choice (he only jokingly pushes for a bathroom mat because he is worried)... etc. He even CLEANS the bathroom!
Let's just say I see a lot of positive lately... and I'm happy to see both UEE and Ha Joon smiley and enjoying themselves 😊

Best way to keep up your hopes for TV lady is to read @oldawyer's comments. 😊

Re: Tae-ho. yes, yes, he loves Hyo Shim and he's ready to jump into a marriage - because he's lonely, he's been independent his whole life, and never had the experience of a family before. It's about him.

Meanwhile, she has never lived independently. She has never asked for his help - but he continues to push it on her. Going into her bedroom and sitting on the bed?? Making her lie down on the bed in the store? He may limit himself more than he wants to, but nevertheless he doesn't merely push boundaries, he crosses them - time and time again and bullies her (his fans would claim he "charms" her) into accepting things even after she initially rejects them.

And for those reasons (not to mention his hatred towards TM and family), he is not the right man for HS at this time when she is trying to strike out on her own. i guess the next 20+ episodes will explore this - they can't spend all of their scenes at the grocery store. 😊

1

Required fields are marked *

I just have to respectfully disagree

I think he truly loves her and has taken a lot of care not to be overbearing which is why he won her over. There was a conversation early on with her cousin about respecting her boundaries and not crushing her with the fact they are rich, showing he understood this cleary.

But yes, he is pushy, but I consider that this was necessary with her because she was so very shut down in the beginning. But HyoShim has a mind of her own, clearly demonstrated when she rejects TaeMin. If she accepts him, it's because she wants to.

He doesn't shower her with gifts but sticks to those she wants or needs. Like the winter coat. It was just a department store coat, not some exclusive designer brand. That was the only gift he pushed on her because he was worried about her being cold. I'll note that he didn't force the appliances on her, she asked for them. She is coming around to the fact that he is rich and she can ask for help.

He has to be a bit pushy because she needs it. She spent too long being her family's punching bag and needs to be reminded frequently to think of herself first.

Yes, he is lonely and wants a family but isn't that the reason all of us form relationships? I don't see it as a negative. She had the reverse issue. She was trapped within the confines of a family that suffocated her. So she wants her own family, on her own terms, and why not with TaeHo?

And the ONLY reason she found the courage to strike out on her own was through TaeHo's support and encouragement. She would still be in her's mother house otherwise. So I can't see how he is the wrong man for her when he is the reason she did strike out on her own.

The internal strife with the family is obviously something that will need to be resolved, and as you said there are 20 episodes left. I would also like to see them form more of a team. Right, she is like a cloud floating above it all, giddy about her new life. I don't wish for her to be burdened with TaeHo's issues, but then, if you are in a relationship, you have to be, by necessity. As you said, we can't have all the future scenes of them be in the grocery store.

I do respect your opinion, but in my estimation, it's contrary to how the writers are choosing to portray the relationship. At least at this point

Thank you for your respectful opinion.

if you read other comments, you will see that I am not alone in my dislike of Tae-ho's pushiness. I don't claim to be a feminist, but if Tae Ho is the ONLY reason she found the courage to strike out on her own, then that's the stuff of Cinderella fairy-tale. because it removes all agency from her and places it with one man.

But I think there were many reasons for her decision and Tae Ho was certainly a catalyst - including a very unprofessional modeling contract. He wants to be her "safety net" - which simply returns her to a co-dependent life. I don't think writer-nim plans that.

Her decision to go back to school, her decision to look for an apartment - she made those on her own. That's what SHE wants - to live an independent life. That's the title of the drama: "Hyo Shim's INDEPENDENT Life." Not Hyo Shim's romantic or love life. Not Hyo Shim's "new" life.

The reason I said he's not (currently) the right 'man" for her is that he's living a double - and very conflicting - life. Basking in love when with Hyo-Shim - and consumed with hate the minute he's not with her. Very unhealthy in my mind.

1

I really like what Kathryn51 has said here. I and others have described him as a "man-child" because in fact he has not fully matured and much of what we see is immaturity, but we forget that he is as damaged by his past as many other of the people in this drama and thus is living a double life.

0

At this point, I don't think TH is at the true love stage. His initial interest in HS was to poke TM. He went to the gym because it was TM's gym. He cleverly pushed himself to get HS his trainer because she was TM's trainer. He needed his attention to HS to distract TM. Later, he also needed HS to ease his loneliness but also tout something TM could never have.

In his head, he may be playing the Knight in Shiny Armor to get HS out of her family hellhole, but she just wanted some independence and not a clingy boyfriend. If he cared about her, he would have given her space, alone, to figure out what she wanted to next.

As I recall he originally objected to having HS as his trainer.

0

@oldawyer is correct - he was an absolute pr**k to her for the 1st 8-10 episodes. I don't recall when he signed up for the 100 lessons (thought it was before he knew that she was TM's trainer) but when she asked why he insisted on keeping her as his trainer, he said "You think I'd let you train TaeMin?'. So, indeed, it was a poke at TM.

1

He didn't know that TM went to that gym and was surprised, and initially objected to having HyoShim as trainer. He chose that gym because it was close to his office, the same reason TM did.

There was some competition over her, true, but I don't think this was even one of the reason he was interested

1

Let the self-pity party roll for those parasites who leeched off HS’s kind generosity. HJ giving up the bar exam to wallow in his own stupidity flushes his character down the show toilet. No redemption for him. Mom’s blame and gaslighting HS for the family misfortunes after moving out is psychotic, unhinged and a FF moment (her scenes are unwatchable).

But TH does not get a pass on his conduct towards HS. Taking her to furniture shop for their marital home when she is still putting up boundaries that he continues to violate is not normal behavior. TH obsessive, compulsive and clingy behavior should have any woman run for the hills. Even the furniture sales man can see TH is a nut case!

Grandma confirms our thoughts that the TV Group marriage is the Trojan horse to ruthlessly take over the family business; but Evil Mom thinks she can out wit them and take over the media company. Never gonna happen. TM’s honeymoon return was more sullen than him getting released from prison.

The quick resolution of Grandma’s capture made little plot sense.

When TH learns that his evil aunt locked up his grandmother for 3 years, instead of thinking of plan to confront her, he shows up at HS new place as a teary eyed man-child drunk. HS spent her adult life trying to remove herself from a wicked, selfish family life but now TH is unfairly pulling her into his nightmare.

Overall, this week was a whiny, self-indulgent tar pit of denial. Even HS is in denial about her ability to move out on her own - - TH has convinced her he was the reason should could make a clean break from her mother.

Tae-ho is still a man-child and he may cause a great deal of harm as a result, just as Kathryn51 has reminded us. I agree with her about the potential danger from Chairman Choi.

Plotwise Grandma's catch and release did not make any sense at all but was just a way to facilitate the conversation with Mr. Yeom and provide the audience with their past history- including that Mr. Yeom and our Evil Aunt/Mom were taken into the family's care at the same time and at an early age.

Well, the whole point of the show is how each member of HS's family learns to live their own independent life. However, I wish the turn-around had occurred just a few episodes earlier. Middle and younger brother have to earn their redemption - and they will - but I wish there were more episodes that explored their journey (together with their intended loves) than the repetitive selfishness (Hyo Jun) and stupidity (Hyo Do) of the first ~30 episodes.

Hyo Jun moving back home was a total and complete waste of 2 episodes - EXCEPT that we had the fun of the brother wrestling match and Jeong Mi-rim's tour de force with Mom.

I think Hyo-do and Hyo-jun needs to be beaten every week. We're getting started on their redemption arcs too late and that is the only way I can come out of this without feeling resentful that these selfish, unemployed guys get to be paired up with some awesome ladies who have drive and ambition.

Hyo-jun giving up studying for the bar was so frustrating, especially when he decided to give it up and moved back home with zero plans (not even plans to pursue directing) except to sleep in and ask his mom to cook for him. The mom hitting him has been her only positive moment so far.

Tae-ho is only likable because of Ha-jun and because he makes Hyo-shim smile her beautiful smile. Otherwise, I just find him suffocating at times. Hyo-shim moved into her own place for the first time. Let her decide what to buy and how to decorate.
