Live Your Own Life: Episodes 44-45 (Drama Highlights)

And the surprises keep coming. Mom finally learns Tae-ho is a chaebol and for once, her motherly instincts supersede her love of money – she’s adamantly against it, worried the chaebols will treat Hyo-shim poorly for her lowly background. Tae-ho is determined to win her over like he’s already won over the rest of the family and gets to work trying to charm his way into her good graces. It looks to be an uphill battle.

When Halmeoni hears that Hyo-shim’s mom disapproves of the marriage, she orders her son (Tae-min’s dad/bio uncle) to hold off on turning himself in for murdering his brother and sister-in-law – a family member doing time for fratricide is bound to ruin Tae-ho’s chances of marriage. Sick of being ordered around, her son shocks her by finding his spine. He accuses her need to control of being the root of their family problems and says she and Sook-hyang are a lot alike. (Bold statement, sir). Next thing you know, Halmeoni is wailing and he’s back to crying and apologizing.

Speaking of Sook-hyang, her villainy has finally driven everyone away, including the ever-loyal Mr. Yeom. When Tae-hee’s DNA test proves that she’s not Mr. Yeom’s daughter, he realizes Sook-hyang has been playing him all these years to keep him under her thumb. She never outright said Tae-hee was his daughter, but she heavily implied it for decades knowing it wasn’t true, which is all kinds of messed up. That’s enough to turn even the staunchest ally, and Mr. Yeom is no longer willing to take the fall for all Sook-hyang’s evil deeds. They both know Tae-min has been digging around, but it turns out Tae-hee is the one with crucial evidence on their biggest crime. On the night Tae-ho’s parents died, she heard Sook-hyang order Mr. Yeom to “take care of it” if her husband fails. Mr. Yeom then drove a rented Truck of Doom into the couple’s car, causing their deaths. Given the depths of villainy we’ve seen from Sook-hyang and her lackey, is anyone even surprised?

I'm indeed not surprised @quirkycase , I'm just sad for Taehee, uri hardworking girl, who suffers the most from all this. I'm glad that at least Taemin is there to take care of her. Btw, it is somehow hard to see Minion Yeom behind the wheel of ToD as the same smiling Fatherly Yeom in the delivery truck with Taehee during her pastry shop days.

Justice for Tae-hee!!! She's gonna be a divorced woman without parents in a hot minute. Where's her happiness gonna come from??

I second the motion- although her parents will not be dead, and she will be able to visit them in prison if she wants to. She will probably want to see her dad.

Because of what has happened Tae-hui will be free to seek her own happiness without regard to her family now. Sure, she will be divorced but she is young and pretty and now much wiser. In short, it is Tae-hui who will truly live her own life from now on.

So, the answer to your question is happiness for Tae-hui will come from how she lives her life from now on. Which is how it should be.

Its assumed that Jin Beom is her dad. It could be someone else.
I feel for Tae Hee.

2

I'm pretty sure he is.

2

Jin-beom's alleged 'infertility' was a myth created by Dragon Lady as part of controlling Mr. Yeom.

1

Oh no @oldawyer !!! Say it isn't so! If it's true that Dragon Mom always knew that Weepy Dad wasn't infertile...then they took Tae-min away from his parents for literally no reason!!

I am preferring the story where DM and WD tried and tried for kids but couldn't have them--so then they stole Tae-min--but as does happen, eventually they were able to conceive.

2

@attiton
There was a big reason.
Taemin was the firstborn in the family. A son. A HEIR!
(And there was an opportunity to do the switch.)
And Grandma wanted to put her first son JB back into the good grace of Grandfather by arranging the Crown Prince on Grandfather's return.

2

She is a capable girl, but given her criminal parents she will need Taemin's support to start any business or get any position in Taesan.

I just got this idea... is Taehee already mature enough to form a family with Golf Teacher and his Gifted Daughter?? He seems to be very kind... and Taehee could find a calm and loving harbour there.

Thanks for the weecap @quirkycase. That was the first time in 45 episodes that we witnessed Tae Min actually showing some proper brotherly affection towards Tae Hee (bar letting her use his credit card for a shopping spree in the early episodes, but that was juts $$$). I had been wondering for a while why he wasn't even in touch with her the whole time she was "in Paris". It also makes me wonder if he had shown her that kind of brotherly affection and care earlier on if she would have confided in him earlier, but then Tae Min v.1 would probably have continued to pull wool over his own eyes and refuse to believe it/proceed to cover it up, and Tae Hee likely knew that. Tae Min v.2 is a huge improvement on v.1, I must say. I'm not sure what to think about Tae Hee. I can only assume she was pretty young and immature when she overheard THAT command and felt extremely scared and isolated when she put two and two together. She wasn't that close to Tae Ho, but to watch him suffering all those years while she knew what had happened to his parents and grandma.....

I'm very glad Hyo Sung got his job back and is on chief investigator duty, which has a certain poetic justice. It was always clear to me that Tae Ho had no power in the company to reinstate him (he had to ask Tae Min to transfer Hyo Sung back to his department in the earlier episodes and had no power to do it himself) and he had to do it via Tae Min, who does hold power of that sort. I presume Hyo Sung will make Director by the the end of the series.

Now we just have to: 1) find out what HS' dad was up to (yawn!), 2) get evidence to lock up the baddies, 3) get TH and HS married before they turns 60.

One reason I still semi-admire the writer is that she throws out red herrings - but they seem so obvious that everyone jumps to immediately conclusions. So, while it was clear that Yeom had a special bond with Tae Hui and probably believed that he was her father - it didn't surprise anyone that Dragon Mom would manipulate Yeom just as she has manipulated everyone else. And really - is it any worse than Granny ripping a baby from his mother and using that leverage over Jin Bum and his wife all these years?? Not much difference to me.

Everyone thinks she will get a come-uppance (prison) but I think she's destined for the loony bin - whether an official one, or the villa, she'll live out her life surrounded by white coats, not prison guards.

Another prediction - Yeom will try to commit suicide, but Tae Hui will stop him - too many hints that her life is his reason for living.

Good points here- and in fact that is what Jin Bum was actually pointing out to Grandma when she came to his shoe shop. Grandma has a great deal to answer for. The only big difference between her and Dragon mom is that she actually acknowledges it- her efforts are now efforts to repair the damage.

I think it is more probable Evil Mom will flee the country and collect her off-shore embezzled funds.

As of 2021, Korea has entered into bilateral extradition treaties with 31 countries: Algeria, Argentina, Australia,
Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, France, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Mexico, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, South Africa, Spain, Vietnam, United Arab Emirates,

In terms of multilateral treaties, Korea acceded to the European Convention on Extradition, to which the 47 member states to the Council of Europe, Israel and South Africa are signatories.

That is only 80 countries. She still has a significant number to choose from.

However, even countries not bound by a treaty will often still entertain and honor an extradition request. The difference is that it becomes discretionary. Fighting such a request might eat up all or at least a significant chunk of her ill-gotten lucre.

Question for @wehl and @oldawyer.

if all of her money is in US shell companies, how easily could she pull it out and wire to another country? Or, perhaps the question is - how easy would it be for Taesan (Tae Min) to slap some sort of detainer on the accounts.

It would be fun if she fled to the US and then discovered she had no funds to live on. However, she conspired to commit murder so I don't think she escapes some sort of lock-up.

0

It is a complicated process to trace wires but it can be done. But pros money launder the wires by purchasing assets or taking out cash (non-traceable) then later putting the proceeds back into accounts in financial privacy heavy jurisdictions.

0

Welh has the right of it: It is more a matter of tracing and acting quick enough. Odd though it would seem this is why the use of Swiss bank accounts is now seldom seen in these dramas- while the Swiss are highly protective of account privacy when properly presented with evidence of wrongdoing the no one moves faster than the Swiss authorities. In the US it simply takes longer for the process to work. 'Slapping a Detainer" still involves a court filing, etc. In truth she could probably do this far quicker than even the speediest legal process.

The accident re-telling did nothing to exonerate Jin Bum, as his confession of intent and causation of the swerving of cars is enough for criminal liability since he contributed to the final Yeom truck collision by putting his brother’s vehicle in harm’s way.

Hee-Joo going to her MIL to beg her to get Hyo Sung’s job back was like giving a winning lottery ticket to a spendthrift. Hee-Joo used her inside information and against Hyo Sung’s wishes to tell this secret to the most greedy person in the family. It throws any work ethic of Sun-Soon out the window to add another wedge between HS and TH. It leads to another Mom meltdown, but Sun- Soon having another personality transplant: she did not cash her SIL golden ticket.

It is a footnote that the producers had no budget to hire Mirim’s parents so we are summarily TOLD what happened; and Hyo Jun is still in the failure mindset. We guess Mirim’s parents are against the marriage because of the physical violence, so what happens if both parental sides are against it? Nothing. This is a weekender.

TM visits Grandma after serious talk with Dad (Park conveniently present on the roof to make future confirmations). TM still thinks Dad is not a murderer (based on what?) Grandmother believes Evil DIL will use it to gain an advantage over TM (based on what?) Finally, the dash cam video! And, like much of the writing, a disappointment. We assumed it was from Jin Bum’s car. (Which leads to the question how even the small bit was recovered from a totally destroyed and incinerated vehicle. Add breaking the laws of physics and chemistry to the list of basic fails.) It makes no sense to “hide” the edited portion from us at this late stage of the show. The expert claims there was a loud thud before the car went into the ravine as well as bumping noises. The inference is that there was a third vehicle, but how can one rule out the noises as coming from Jin Bum’s car hitting first the barriers then crashing loudly into the guardrail? The final wild conclusion: the car was hit by a dump truck? We then see more video of the car coming to a stop by the road shoulder ( I hate the piece-meal approach to sharing information). Yeom telling TM that Grandma ordered him to break apart the brothers puts more blame on Grandmother which is probably deserved.

Evil Mom and Tae Hee’s homey lunch was delightful when Tae Hee tells mom she must be on edge these days. Tae Hee pushing mom’s buttons ending with a water slap: it is all the confirmation Tae Hee needs to find an exit plan from her “real” family. Alas, even that hope gets destroyed later on.

A real surprise is that Hyo Do did not screw up the chicken store (yet) because Hee-Joo is working with him. Couple PPL at HS’s apartment, sigh. HS asks why he is glum, but he withholds information (which is standard operating procedure for couples in this show.) ... narcissistic move to separate HS from her family and friends?) His excuse is that when he is in Korea, he sadly thinks of his dead parents. (But won’t he think about them overseas?)

Secret poet Pilip? Is the writer now using a random plot generator? And what ever happened to Rubi’s internet revenge posts against Taesan?

HS’ mom is still against HS marriage to TH even after Hyo Sung said he changed his mind about him. When Mom demanded HS to come over immediately, and TH tried to push his way in, she bluntly rebuffed him. By putting aside money, Mom puts together some common sense reasons why rich families are difficult families. The financial and cultural divide is something MS and TH have never discussed. If she marries into Taesan, she will lose control of her life. (Is Hyo Sung right that Mom really knows all the bad news about Taesan? Yes she does.) But HS seems rebellious when Mom correctly states that HS is immature despite financially supporting the family. Mom demands she hold off any wedding (but she is leaning towards disapproval.) Her life’s mission is not to have her children looked down upon by others.

Tae Hee gets the DNA results and she is .... shocked?! Yeom is not her father (Yeom has been played all along as some commentators have suspected). The Evil Mom’s betrayal comes after he testified to the prosecution that he was fully to blame and Evil Mom had nothing to do with it. At that moment, Yeom, the family fixer, was neutered by Sook Hyang. Episode 44 ends with another birth secret cliffhanger.

We must all be watching different versions of the drama. 😂 Hyo Shim most definitely agreed to marry him (when she visited him in prison) and the poor guy just watched a traumatic video of his parents last moments/being murdered, so was just deflecting her "what wrong" question when he asked where they should live/should we go to California. He didn't seem particularly serious about it, and was just understandably devastated that night. That was my take.

I try not to remember the scenes with Hyo Shim's mom (they are all awful) but I do recall her asking Hyo Shim to invite Tae Ho over again for a marriage talk (and that comes with pollock) before she found out he was a chaebol. Anyway, I think that whole scene of her interviewing him is meant to be cheeky/ironic and I applaud the man for lasting that long in her presence. I can't imagine anybody else managing her!

It is clear that Hyo-shim has agreed to marry him and I too am not sure how serious Tae-ho is about asking her to move to CA. I too think it was just an emotional reaction. In any case we all know that he needs to stay.

I frankly think that all of her children have had enough of Hyo-shim's mom. Her treatment of both Mi-rim and Tae-ho is simply too irrational to ignore. It certainly helps that Hyo-shim's Oppa knows Tae-ho well enough to know that Hyo-shim's mom does not know what she is talking about when opposing the marriage.

Episode 45 begins with Evil Mom denying or implying Yeom’s paternity of Tae Hee. She basically lied to him to get him on tight leash. Yeom can be angry about this, but if he was so smart he should have figured this out long ago. TM interrupts Tae Hee’s fight with mom. He will not abandon her.

Hyo Sung is hung up on the piano competition photograph. Is this his memory or his father’s memory with another family? He tells his wife the woman is someone he knew a long time ago (a teacher, perhaps?)

It is TM who reinstates Hyo Sung! (Maybe at the unseen suggestion of TH, but still . . .) The favor he asks is to dig up dirt on Yeom (again, TM has the means and connections to hire professional investigators. Why put Hyo Sung into a spy? Yes, I know this is how dramas work.) And Hee Joo gets it wrong; Mother did not call TH to ask for reinstatement.

The funniest insider joke was HS’ mom stating she should not be a consistent character.

Park Myung Soo cameo was another desperate attempt at ratings fail.

Once again, against the direct wishes of HS’ mom, TH barges in unannounced while Mother is dealing with another family issue. She is right that he does not value her words as an elder. TH claims that Mother “promised” to make him a dried pollock dish (but she never said that that I can recall). She does fairly press him on why a man of his class would want her daughter. The answer that she is “stunningly pretty” seems shallow as a giddy schoolboy crush. “You are a silly person with no substance,” Mother replies. She does lecture on the stereotypical rich man getting older and chasing younger women. TH does not deny it but says it depends on the person. And he says if he gets out of line, HS will beat him to a pulp. (Wow, what a fairy tale foundation for a marriage!) He white lies the statement that he never challenged her or talked back to her. She then directly asks him what he was in prison for . . . TH’s shocked expression said a lot. Mother knew and TH could not explain. Rooftop Grandmother telling everyone that she is TH’s grandson would only ire Mother more by chaebol secrets and deceptions. For once, Mother’s approach and reasons for being against HS’s marriage are logical and practical considerations based on facts and observation. TH was left with no actual rebuttal why they should get married.

Everyone but Mother loves the idea of TH as an in-law like mosquitoes like uncovered skin. HS is rightfully mad at TH coming to see Mother without telling her. But it is part of his pushy and impatient personality. He lit the gaslight match by saying he told her he’d come with or without her (again I don’t recall that exact language) especially since Mother directly told him NOT to visit. Mother is also right to tell HS to have TH eat and leave quickly (it is her house).

The Taesan clan has a hard time listening to what people tell them. Mr. Park clearly told Grandma that she was against TH’s marriage. But then she goes to Jin Bum...

1
5

Required fields are marked *

... to tell him not to go to the police right now because it could “mess up” TH’s marriage plans. Just like TH does not get that his weaseling into HS’ family’s graces is like a fox trying to sneak into a hen house irritates HS’ Mother to no end, Grandma apparently is clueless about all the Taesan bombs being detonated around her. Does she just assume a poor woman like Sun-Soon is ignorant of the Taesan mess? Yes, what mother would want their daughter to marry into such a quagmire? Jin Bum finally stands up to Grandma’s demand by stating that she favored his brother and undermined his decisions to make him look like a failure. He squarely blames everything on Grandma’s behavior including creating his Evil Wife. For the sake of “protecting the company,” she destroyed her own family.

Even though Yeom confessed, Evil Mom gets another interrogation. It is a weak threat that he will recant to the prosecutor. Evil Mom tries to buy him with the Noble Idiot card.

Oh No! TM brings said Tae Hee fried chicken from Hyo Do’s place! But Tae Hee had more on her mind that insensitive chicken: she overheard Mom giving Yeom the order to kill Jun Bum and his wife. We end with the full version of the accident which does not shift the blame one inch: Evil Mom, Yeom and Jin Bum all conspired to cause the accident with intent to harm/kill.

The biggest adult changeling this week was HS’ Mom, who between hysterics, made some logical and key points on her children’s life issues which seem to mount higher and higher than a Buffalo blizzard. The children and their in-laws became enthralled with TH after learning about his status and wealth. I wonder how much leech DNA is in Carrot’s genome. This week I did not find TH charming or funny (as what director/writer tried to convey). There is no romance in the couples just dunk and cover moments, week after week.

To me the key point made when Grandma visited Jin-bum to ask him to delay going to the police until TH is married is significant for showing us just how highly she values Hyo-shim and why Hyo-shim's mom may be right in the general sense that HS marrying into a Chaebol family would normally be disastrous, but that mom is also wrong to not recognize that there is an exception to every rule and that her daughter is that exception, just as Grandma recognizes. Grandma has come to see and know the person that Hyo-shim is and values that person as the one her grandson needs.

This is actually not a new plot idea. A Chaebol grandparent recognizing value in the 'commoner girl' is the very starting point of the wonderful romcom 1% OF SOMETHING (the remake of 1% OF ANYTHING). There the Chaebol Grandfather hand picks a reluctant Cinderella for his grandson- and all sort of fun starts from there.

Re: Granny. I don't believe she was doing it for Hyo Shim - she was doing it for Tae Ho, because he's in love with HS. She's willing to sacrifice her son - without waiting to hear from TM about the dash cam video - because from Day One it's always been about Tae Ho.

I truly despise her and I think she IS as bad as Dragon Mom because it DID start from her from their childhood as she favored Jun Bum over her eldest. Everything she did was for "Taesan" and she expects Tae Min to continue putting Taesan first.

I bet when TM tells her that he plans for Tae Ho to be Chairman, she will rant and rave at him as well. Always protecting her pet.

I knew it- the really big birth secret with Tae-hui was that she was NOT the daughter of Mr. Yeom. Her mother has been controlling Mr. Yeom by lying to him that she was (her lame excuse is to claim that she never actually said it in so many words, but it really does not matter at this point- her hold over him is shattered). Score another one for Tae-hui for having the brains, wit and courage to find out. Note to Tae-min: You may be stuck with running the company, but that load will be far lighter once you bring in your sister/cousin to help out- she is not only smart but has good business sense and has a real practical head on her shoulders. (Add Tae-ho’s help and things get even better for Tae-min, whose life would be even better still if went and got his wife back- but writer-nim is probably not up to pulling that off). It turns out that Tae-hui’s real father, the chairman, did not kill his brother after all. Instead, it was Mr. Yeom driving The White Dump Truck of Doom in an implausible scheme that in reality would be so complex as to be impossible to execute in practice (sort of like the Japanese Navy plan for the Battle of Leyte Gulf). But just because a plan is totally implausible would never stop this writer-nim from using it. In any case who knew that one of the people who needed liberating would be Mr. Yeom? Although going to prison for murder might not qualify as liberation.

Score another one for Tae-hui in being the witness who remembers her mom telling Mr. Yeom to do this. The slap she received from her mom was probably what finally motivated her to tell Tae-min.

Just a minor quibble here but what textile factory anywhere in the world uses dump trucks? (Supposedly the truck was borrowed from there.)

Which brings us to Hyo-shim. Her mom is (seemingly uncharacteristically) against her marriage to Tae-min. Her reason is actually rational: How would a Chaebol family treat her daughter? In order to marry the man she loves Hyo-shim will have to defy her mom. In truth, if our Lady MacBeth wannabe were to remain in charge of that Chaebol family Hyo-shim’s mom would be absolutely correct. But we know that in fact that will not remain the case and that Grandma will be coming back. Grandma not only approves of Hyo-shim but actually understands the value of what she brings to Grandma’s family: A peacemaker who can help to heal the many wounds which the Kang family has suffered. This Chaebol family will value Hyo-shim for the most rational reason possible. So, once again our idiotic and infantile mom has mis-judged the situation.

The slap she received from her mom was probably what finally motivated her to tell Tae-min.

I had a different take - I think she finally confessed when Tae Min told her that nothing had changed between them - she was still his sister. She had previously feared that he would throw her out if he found out that Yeom was her father (which she believed at one point).

Although Tae Hui provided the evidence required to prove intent, according to the preview Hyo-sung find Yeom's old cell phone - so perhaps that will be the real key, sparing Tae Hui the agony of testifying - and being grilled by defense attorney - in a trial. Not that I expect a trial - I've always believed that Dragon Mom will finally descend into a catatonic phase of insanity and end her life at the villa, surrounded by white coats.

They are very good at comedy. There were some major hints that they were falling for each other - she always turned the lights down low and he was always waiting for her with a silly excuse in his head.

Which is why I resent the fact that it was a drunken, one-night stand pregnancy that brought them together. Total lack of creativity.

On this writer's chessboard, Hyo Jun and Mi-rim are nothing more than plot device "pawns". Their story begins and ends with each other, no other real intersection with other characters. And Mi-rim's sudden transformation from trademark to criminal defense attorney (so that she could be the plot device to search for Dad) - and her mid-drama failure as an actress - tells me that in this particular case, writer-nim never had a long story arc for the two of them or she decided to trash it.

So mom knows Tae Ho is a chaebol. I was betting he would be treated well now.

I did feel the break after the almost impact in the dashcam video meant something else happened that we aren’t supposed to know yet.
I was so sure Tae Hui was Yeom’s daughter. Wonder whose she is now. Can’t believe it is Jin Beom. It was so jarring when Yeom suddenly started calling her noona. Not sure if I missed it before but did they suddenly decide on this twist?

Everytime Soon Huang slaps Tae Hui, I wonder why she doesn’t slap her right back. I want to. Lol

I agreed with what Jin Boem said. His mother is on a smaller scale as manipulative as his wife
It feels like the lead, Tae Ho is just fluff while Tae Min is carrying the load of the drama.

It feels like the lead, Tae Ho is just fluff while Tae Min is carrying the load of the drama.

There have always been two male leads in this drama and it is unfortunate that the first half was spent in romantic nonsense - many articles and previews tried to create a love triangle that simply was not believable to the viewer.

So, Tae Ho is the "romantic" male lead, but Tae Min has always been the "lead" in terms of leadership, sacrifice, devotion to family, devotion to a company and its thousands of employees. Regardless, I hate the writer for how he treated Su-kyung - it was unbelievably cruel and his "love" for Hyo Shim doesn't excuse it.

I admit that I was hoping Yeom wasn't the murderer. Lee Kwang Gi is a great actor.

I like this assessment of Tae-min as something more than a 'Second Lead" and it is certainly consistent with how this drama began- for a considerable period of time we knew far more about Tae-min than we did of Tae-ho. In fact, from the beginning it was clear that it was Tae-min who was the male counterpart to Hyo-shim while Tae-ho was actually different: Tae-ho was from the beginning already been living an independent life- indeed he has been doing so involuntarily and not by choice. Which is why Tae-min was frankly envious of him and indeed felt like he was almost owned by Tae-ho as a result. His life was not his own and he resented the difference between them. Of course, finding out who his real father is has changed that and now the two of them must redefine what their relationship will be with between themselves but also the company and what remains of their family.

The truth is that Tae-min is probably not able to simply walk away from the company but now he has a very solid claim on his younger brother to help him- and even on his sister/cousin as well (the sooner Tae-hui is brought up to speed the better). He may not get to be completely independent from the company but at least the load can be lighter now.

The idea that a drama could have two first male leads has been a unique feature of this drama. It is only possible because they actually serve different functions in this drama: TM is the male counterpart to HS while TH is the 'romantic' lead.

I think he called her Noona, because he was full of emotions.

"Noona" was just added as a way of emphasizing that Mr. Yeom's attachment to Dragon Lady long predated her involvement with her husband.

Tae-hui is in fact Jin-beom's daughter. The claim that he could not have a child was just one more lie by our Dragon Lady to get Mr. Yeom to believe that Tae-hui was his child.

Tae-hui does not slap back because Korean kids do not slap their parents

Where's our shipping war thread!?? I hereby start one!!

Frankly, I didn't even think we had a shipping war at anytime during this run, but @oldawyer says we did, so we did.

Despite Ha Joon's radiant smile, his simpering aegyo just doesn't do it for me and while Tae-min was definitely at a disadvantage in the first half of this drama by being a pushy so-and-so, he's pulled WAY in the lead for me now that he's had his comeuppance...just as a guy. though.

I think Hyo-shim should go and LIVE HER OWN LIFE without either of these men.

Wanna hear something funny? What actually started to change my mind about Tae-min was Hyo-shim's mom's whole speech about how Tae-ho didn't fit the mold of what handsome men "of her generation" looked like--and as I was listening to her, I realized that she was describing Tae-min!! And I also saw her point. He's an older type of handsome, and now that his character is much less of a jerk, I can see it easily.

Happiness for Tae-min! Tae-ho can be happy too, if he must...surfing alone in California. I mean, can you even imagine it??? Let's try. Malibu or Santa Monica? 🤣

In case you were wondering this makes you and Seonha TEAM SHAMAN aka "None of the Above". For much of this drama I have also been Team Shaman. I am now slightly more on the side of Tae-ho but not because of Tae-ho (because everything both of you have said makes total sense): Instead, it is because Hyo-shim has fallen in love with him and for no other reason. He is her choice and so be it. I simply hope that Tae-ho will grow to deserve her- and that will take a lot of growth.

Tae Ho can have Hyo Shim with my good wishes because I never warmed up to the character and I hated every scene with her and Tae Min. I also hope he's headed back to Cali, but pretty sure that's not the plan.

Tae Ho is still a man-child. Fluffy and cute when w/Hyo Shim and full of hate/revenge regarding the past when she's not with him. He is still living a bi-polar life (has he ever told Hyo Shim about his plans for revenge/"justice"??). I think that will be the message in the end - in order to have a happy life with Hyo Shim, he will need to let go of the past.

Correct. Bad pronouns - my apologies. I didn't warm up to HS.

I don't know if it was the writing (HS as doormat) or the actress (mooooommm/엄마/eommaaaaaaa) but it's clear to me that the weekend "heroine" prototype is unappealing to me,

Of all the series (relation)ships, I think most are sunken wrecks.

HS and TH. I never saw the real connection between the two. They are too different socially, financially and personality. HS was never given a chance to casually date men to find what she wants in life. HS gave in to TH because he was her support to leave the house to live her own life, but TH just replaced her mom as a needy, impatient and controlling person due to his traumatic loneliness. I don’t think they are compatible to stay together long term.

Hyo Sung and Hee Joo. He got married to leave the house, but he feels guilty about leaving HS the adult in a dysfunctional household. He was determined to raise his kids differently than his father, but his wife turned into an expensive helicopter mom. They stay together for their kids future and not their own.

Hyo Joon and Mirim. Another incompatible pair: he lacks the drive and confidence to succeed because he has been pampered his entire adult life. She is smart professionally but dumb socially. She works (we think because we don’t see it) at a major law firm. They never dated. They are forced by circumstance to be bickering roommates.

Hyo Do and Tae Hee. Thank goodness Tae Hee left this marriage of convenience because HD was constantly taking advantage of her work ethic and later attempt to tap into her wealthy status. HD is one of those guys who has “quick rich” ideas but no competence to find his easy life of leisure while Tae Hee is rich but does not want a life of leisure because she wants self-respect and self-esteem as her own person. They had no common personal goals to even consider a real relationship. Any ship of theirs sank at the dock.

Tae Min and Soo Kyung. Another ship that sank before it left the harbor. They could have been a power couple but their marriage started with end game resentment against each other. It was doomed to fail.

Jin Bum and Sook Hyang. A nuclear waste dump of a marriage. Her motivation was that of a golddigger who latched on to an insecure, drunken and foolish chaebol heir. Her toxic behavior of gaslighting JB into alcoholism and mental instability was abusive control. For JB this is not a marriage but a harsh prison.

Your description of Jin-beom's marriage could not be more spot on.

As for Tae-min and Soo-kyung- a writer with a better handle on romance could have made this story the greatest enemies to lovers story ever. But the reason for its failure was logical.

But Tae-hui did not leave her marriage with Hyo-do. On the contrary, it is Hyo-do who made the first truly responsible decision in his life and divorced her for her sake, recognizing that he was married to her for his own selfish reasons. It may have been the first time he actually made a tough decision for the sake of someone other than himself.

From those two, I think Hyoshim is better with jokester Taeho who makes her laugh and who she can scold than with Taemin who is way too serious and who in case of a problem would give her a silent treatment. I also can't imagine Taemin with a vacuum cleaner 😄😄
(he could do the curry though... maybe 😆).

Anyway I honestly don't care much anymore, Hyoshim seems to be happy with Taeho and love him, so be it.

Yeah, nah. His jokes are laaaaame, and she laughs because she thinks, eventually, he'll stop. But she's gonna spend the rest of her life trying to get him to tell her one, single, true thing. Hell on earth.

The only answer here is "no answer."

I don't know... she seems to like them, she seems to like HIM... he seems to like her curry... and he seems to be capable of handling her mom... I still think they can be happy together. And I think they have more chances to have a happy marriage than Hyoshim and Taemin.
But do I care deeply? Not really.
I care more about Taehee.
And Smexy Black Knight Taemin.

Remember 2 weeks ago we agreed that HS, Tae Hee and Mirim flee to Jeju to open a fried chicken restaurant/health club.

@welh640 RIGHT! 맞아! Gosh, my memory for happy endings has gone to the dogs!! What could be better than fried chicken and free weights???

I'm afraid Tae Min does nothing for me as he behaved abominable for the first 40 episodes. Even at his best, he was busy lecturing people, going on a monologue about himself (yawn). He is driven by one thing: duty, particularly filial duty and he only improved from his insufferable v.1 because his parents "changed", so we have v.2, which is much better but a bit too late for me. Someone like that would be awful to be romantically inclined with (as HS and SK can attest to). I'll take the emotionally intelligent, kind, caring, emphatic, jokey Tae Ho anytime. Anyway, I find him adorable, as Hyo Shim does.

Well, just wondering where is Hyo Shim's independence? She physically moved out but I don't see the independence part. Maybe it is a cultural thing. As for her mother, it is OK for her to mistreat Hyo Shim (she basically used her daughter as an ATM) but oooh a rich family will mistreat you. Well, can she be treated worse than her mother? Then she is questioning why ML likes her poor daughter basically showing that she does not value her daughter at all.
The writer could have explored Tae Min's marriage path, character development instead of this mother's tantrums.
Also, MiRim is not given any justice. She could have been the voice of reason for the mother and brothers.
I have a suspicion that the father has lost his memory kind of plot line so it was not his fault.

Yes, you are right to point out that mom is not only a totally infantile narcissist but a hypocrite of the first order. Unlike the more normal Chaebol family/'commoner' set-up this Chaebol family is far more likely to treasure Hyo-shim than mistreat her: That was fully demonstrated when Grandma went to her oldest son to ask him to hold off on turning himself in until after Tae-ho gets married. If she saw Hyo-shim as a cheap gold digger then she would not have done this. Instead, she sees Hyo-shim as someone that Tae-ho has to have in his life.

I agree that this may not look like 'independence' but what does independence mean? It means being in charge of one's life. Hyo-shim is choosing the direction of marrying into the Kang family against her mother's wishes. One of the most revealing things about these episodes is that we finally see that it was never really about money with her mom: It was about controlling Hyo-shim (And Hyo-jun- he is studying for the Bar at her commend). Once you understand the fundamental narcissism of the mom you can see that it drove the dysfunction in this family (and was probably the real reason that Dear Old Dad left in the first place).

The one thing that has been consistent in this show is that writer-nim is dependent on surprises to keep our interest. Amnesia? Why not.

The neglect of Tae-min and his marriage was a nearly criminal act by this writer. Had writer-nim followed through with that and reduced the mom's tantrum scenes this would have risen to being one of the best weekenders. Really, would anything having been wrong with also giving Tae-min a happy ending?

Mi-rim was also criminally neglected. Properly speaking she should be seen as adding an element to Hyo-shim's family that would be analogous, though different, to what Hyo-shim brings to the Chaebol family: Hyo-shim brings them heart, but just as you suggest Mi-rim brings to the Lee family a true voice of reason, which they desperately need after being dominated by their irrational mother for so long.

I'm still hoping for a happy ending for Tae Min. Not necessarily a romantic happy ending (doesn't look likely), but at least one where he actually gets to "live his own life" and find some happiness in whatever makes him tick.
