News bites: February 8, 2024

  • The first script reading stills have dropped for MBC’s period-action Chief Detective 1958, led by Lee Je-hoon (Taxi Driver 2), Lee Dong-hwi (Big Bet), Choi Woo-sung (Melancholia), and Yoon Hyun-soo (A Good Day to Be a Dog). Slated to broadcast on weekends starting April, the star of the original 1970-80s series Choi Bool-am (Goodbye to Goodbye) will have a special cameo role in this new prequel. [MBC]

  • It’s been two years since Hyeri’s (May I Help You) last drama project and she’s currently considering a return to high school in TVING’s new mystery-thriller Friendly Competition. Based on a popular webtoon by the same title, the series is in the early stages and is also being touted as a “GL” drama – which stands for “Girl Love.” [Newsen]

  • Speaking of TVING and high school, a new poster has come out for Pyramid Game, where our transfer student Bona (Joseon Attorney) sits surrounded by the student hyena pack. Also starring Jang Da-ah, Ryu Da-in (Crash Course in Romance), and Kang Na-eon (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) among others in a fresh-faced ensemble lineup, the suspense-thriller premieres this month on February 29. [News1]
  • MBN’s Missing Crown Prince released another poster as well, focusing this time on the rom-com’s central love triangle between Suho (Behind Your Touch), Hong Ye-ji (Love Song for Illusion), and Minkyu (Maestra – Strings of Truth). Coming to our screens on March 9, production is being led by PD Kim Jin-man (Rebel – Thief Who Stole the People) along with Bossam – Steal the Fate writers, Kim Ji-soo and Park Chul. [Sports Chosun]

  • Bleak new character teasers have arrived for MBC’s revenge drama Wonderful World, raising the stakes and tragedy for our leads: Kim Nam-joo (Misty) and Cha Eun-woo (A Good Day to Be a Dog). Together with Kim Kang-woo (Artificial City) and Im Se-mi (The Worst of Evil), the series will be launching on March 1 in the weekend slot. [MBC]
  • On KBS’s Grabbed by the Collar (previously translated as Let’s Get Grabbed by the Collar), the newest stills feature Kim Haneul (Kill Heel) and Jang Seung-jo (Death’s Game) whose marriage has taken a sad turn. With a murder mystery at the center of our story – in addition to Kim’s ex-boyfriend and cop Yeon Woo-jin (Daily Dose of Sunshine) – the crime drama will be airing in the Monday-Tuesday slot next month. I also loved him in Taxi Driver and Where Stars Land was pretty fun, but I can't say I got super into his other projects after Signal. So I'm hoping for a wild comeback here!

1) I like the idea of this era. It will be investigation without phones, internet, surveillance camera, etc.

4) Between this poster and the last one, it looks like the production doesn't know what kind of drama they are doing.

6) I love the actors! Really excited to watch.
Kim Haneul was so lovely in the episode of House on Wheels 4.

Is it just me or Kim Haneul look very different? It is a good thing though, sometimes she looked like Lee Boyoung so much to the point where its hard for me to distinguish the two (fortunately Lee Boyoung always has her trademark short hair)

I did confuse her with Lee Bo-young. It wasn't that I didn't know both names or actresses, it was that I interchanged their names while mentioning a drama each one starred in.
I've gotten over that now and I can spot Lee Bo-young apart from Kim Han-uel from afar

For me, she looks the same as usual.

It's the bangs! She's had a signature side-part for decades that, as she got older, looked very old-fashioned in my eyes. The change in style suits her and she looks very pretty. (Though I still find her acting to be bland.)

She needs to leave her comfort zone a bit, like Kim Hee-Sun in Tomorrow. That being said, I read an article that said the older Korean actresses get, the more limited range of roles being offered to them (unlike older Korean actors which are still offered in a wide range of roles), so it's a bit hard too.

6. The happier they were, the less gorgeous they were.
As the marriage took a sad turn, they ended up more gorgeous. Is this the pre-separation glow?

Sidenote : with the description of Yeon Woo-jin's character, I hope they are not going My Happy Ending route with this cause it'll be an instant hot potato drop.

I’m loving Lee Je-hoon’s retro-inspired suit for his retro-inspired drama! So excited to see more from this one!

“Vestis virum facit”. (Clothes make the man.) Attributed to Erasmus (1466-1536) among a number.
LJH looks great in that suit.

I wondered why he wore the suit to the script reading. Are they already working on the show or was it a respect thing?

Maybe it was on the same day with a photoshoot session, because his hair was done too? Usually he dresses very casually for script reading.

The topmost picture for this post is the MOST ADORABLE THING EVER.

There's almost nothing I don't love about it...from the way it uses the genre of the "script shot" (I mean what IS that), to the way that both men are smiling, to the way that I can't get the word avuncular out of my head now...everything.

If available,
No. 1. MBC’s CHIEF DETECTIVE 1958. I am ready for Lee Je-hoon in the analog era. Probably will have to put up with the clacking of typewriters but that is ok. (I wonder if there will be typewriting rehearsal.) I love the one degree of separation to the original drama (MBC’s CHIEF INSPECTOR) (1971-1989) with the appearance of Choi Bool-am.
No. 6. KBS’s COLLAR. By adults, for adults. I will be there.
(For a very brief moment I thought Jang Seung-jo was holding a fishing rod.)

I honestly thought it was a fishing rod with the sea behind them it made sense. What is it? A selfie stick?
