Although I’m Not a Hero hints at superpowered secrets

The first teaser for JTBC’s upcoming drama Although I’m Not a Hero is out, offering up a sneak peak into the lives of our titular not-hero and his extraordinary family. With their supernatural abilities, they have a lot on their plate, especially when an unexpected visitor comes knocking.

Intrigued by the rumors she’s heard, Do Da-hae — played by Chun Woo-hee (Delightfully Deceitful) — can’t resist gossiping about the mysterious Bok family to her friends. “That household harbors a secret,” Da-hae says, as mystical music plays. “Apparently, they’re a family with superpowers.” It’s such an outlandish notion that Da-hae can barely stifle her laughter, especially when she gets to the punchline. Supposedly, the Bok family lost their powers after developing ailments that their ordinary peers suffer from.

Da-hae’s curiosity winds up leading her right to the Bok family’s doorstep, though her intentions aren’t clear as of yet. Does she simply want to investigate the peculiar claims? Or does she have an ulterior motive in approaching them? Da-hae seems to have an inquisitive air about her, but given her skeptical snickering earlier, it seems like she’s leaning on the side of cynical doubt.

Except she’s about to be proven wrong. It may sound like a ridiculous tale to anyone who’s listening, but the Boks do indeed possess superpowers. Granny Go Du-shim (Island) sees the future in her dreams, and big sis Soo-hyun (Chimera) soars between skyscrapers in the cover of night. As for little sis Park So-yi (Revenant), the nature of her latent powers is yet unrevealed, but we get a glimpse of her eyes glowing a metallic blue.

With great power, though, comes great calamity. Between explosions, car crashes, and a case of near-drowning, it appears that these superpowers bring disaster in their wake. It’s no wonder that our former hero Bok Gwi-joo — played by Jang Ki-yong (Now, We Are Breaking Up) — has slipped into a state of depression, as evidenced by the bottles of alcohol strewn about his messy room. As the teaser closes on Gwi-joo squeezing his eyes shut in a fervent wish, Da-hae narrates, “Don’t you want to go back to those happy times?”

Directed by PD Jo Hyun-tak (Snowdrop) and written by Joo Hwa-mi (Welcome), with the content creation studio Gleline and writer Kang Eun-kyung (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3) overseeing production, Although I’m Not a Hero is slated for a May 4 premiere.

This will be my first drama or movie with Chun Woo-hee, I've heard great things. And the story sounds like a quirky fantasy-comedy, so I'm doubly hyped.

I second Be melodramatic is a great watch. It was my first ever rewatch and I loved it second time round. I was in great deal of pain last year and needed a distraction and it worked perfectly.

If you're brave, she was great in Han Gong-Ju.

We know so little about this story or the production going into its marketing cycle, but it's looking like that might be a good thing? I'm already surprised by the vibe.

I will be there for JTBC’s ALTHOUGH I AM NOT A HERO if available on a legal US stream. Fingers crossed for Viki!

Not mentioned in the above report but also in the cast is Choi Kwang-rok. A MDL article (March 24, 2024) reports that Choi Kwang-rok gained 30kg (66 lbs) for his role of “Noh Hyeong Tae, a member of the so-called Jjimjilbang fraud group”.
(Jjimjilbang are bathhouses in South Korea.). I am assuming (perhaps wrongly at this point) that Choi Kwang-rok will be playing a ‘heavy’ in more ways than one in HERO.
Here is the MDL article:

O/T. Along the lines of weight gain for roles most recently Jang Dong-yoon gained 14 kg (30 lbs) for his roles of ssireum wrestler Baek-doo.
He was amazing in that role but adding 60 lbs of weight for a role is something else.

Gosh I hope he has some good strategies and time to lose that before his next role.

Namgoong Min gained 30 pounds for Awaken too.
I saw an interview with Junho where he sheepishly confessed than NGM asked him for advice and he told him: Just eat 3 cheesecakes a day! And then was very embarrassed to find out that he needed to bulk up on muscles not fat! 😄😄

@midnight I was kinda sad for him because he worked so hard for this role but the drama wasn't really good...

I can understand JDY’s situation for an athlete’s role in FLOWER. How he managed get that extra weight in the right places amazed me (and also his ability to sprint with that extra weight).
In HERO (above) I guess I will have to wait (weight) and see what the necessity was for CKR to put on that much weight.

Waiting to hear more but it does sound like it will be one to watch. It does sound like a live action version of The Incredibles trying to blend into mundane life routines and suppress their powers. I wonder if they are the only ones or if it’s a world where super powers are rare but accepted as normal for some people but most people have never met someone in real life.

Maladjusted superheroes unable to manage their superpowers. Hmm. I think the FL will be the balance they need to adjust to their powers and thrive. Hwaiting gang!!

This looks intriguing from the little info available. I was disappointed to see that the working title has changed to the very vanilla The Atypical Family. Because I Am Not a Hero is both more evocative and closer to a literal translation.
