True Beauty:
I can’t believe how quickly Ju Gyeong’s friends and classmates turned against her when they found out about her real face. Especially Suah. I don’t get why she’s mad at Ju Gyeong when she should be mad at these people who were bullying her. They act like it’s a crime to wear makeup and make it seem like she claimed to be a goddess because of her beauty when they were the ones who started calling her a goddess in the first place. Also, Kang Su Jin was so awesome in the beginning of the show and I’m so disappointed in her now.

Suah reaction is because she feel like JG did not trust her as a friend with her secrets. You gonna like her in next episode. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I got to that part and have half forgiven her. I still think she should’ve stood up for Ju Gyeong more when the whole school turned against her.

I’ve watched the first ep last night and I’m wondering if this will make me mad later because of the way characters act and the message it sends. On one hand it shows how absurd it is their obsession with this idea of what is to be pretty but on the other hand it has a brother blackmailing the FL as a joke, this was very bad taste so I’m thinking if it will go more toward this kind of thing.

The brother blackmailing her ends pretty quickly and he gets better.

I wasn’t sure if I would like it either at first but I’m really enjoying it. The main point of the show is that Ju Gyeong needs to learn to accept her own face and not feel like she always has to cover it up with makeup in order to be liked.

Thanks, it’s annoying when the family doesn’t understand what characters like her feel and I got the idea the family would remain indifferent and cruel. Also it gave me some bad memories from My ID is Gangnam Beauty because this idea that the character is to blame for the way society teaches people to think and value some standards as beauty is also not something I can agree so I don’t want her to learn that lesson. It’s like kdramas don’t want to challenge the norm so it’s easier to blame the individual, the bully, or worse, the victims, but without any discussion about how they were taught to act like that. It’s not about self esteem, it is about the cultural references, does the show go that way? If it’s just about telling her to learn to accept it then I get suspicious.

A lot of the show is about her trying to hide her real face from her friends because she’s worried they’ll treat her like the bullies at her old school. When her real face is revealed though, she has to learn to be comfortable in her own skin and confident whether she’s wearing makeup or not.

I think it’s a good message but I also liked Gangnam Beauty pretty well and it sounds like you didn’t. To me Gangnam Beauty was about the main character realizing that plastic surgery wouldn’t solve all her problems.

            Thanks!
I do understand why she should feel confident without makeup, not let society dictate what is beautiful, or if thinking herself to be plain should even make her insecure, however I also question why the no-makeup version should be considered her true face. Everybody wears all kinds of gadgets and outfits. Nobody goes around naked do they? And yet nobody needs to ever know what somebody’s belly look like to imagine they know them, why should faces be any different? It’s just a silly modern concept but it has a huge importance in society and there is a lot of prejudice in ksociety against plastic, which is complete hypocrisy because they also have such crazy standards for beauty.

That is one of the things I didn’t like in MIGB but I liked other things, maybe I’ll like this too.

I never thought of it that way! Comparing makeup to clothes is interesting. Maybe the difference is because everyone wears clothes but not everyone wears makeup? So those who don’t wear makeup may seem more honest or comfortable in their own skin. (Or in my case to lazy to care what I look like 😂)

It is ridiculous that women are expected to be beautiful but if they go to extreme measures to accomplish that (like plastic surgery or lots of makeup), society also frowns upon that. It’s like women need to be naturally beautiful.
