It’s been a while since I ugly cried watching a drama. I kept having to remind myself that these people are fictional characters and there was no need for me to bawl my eyes out over them. That’s what my brain said while my heart screamed, “But I’ve come to love them, their journey, and their aspirations. And they are gone now!”

And to watch these characters turned into ashes as blood dripped from their clothes was so heartbreaking. Because I watch them, I know them, and I love them. So, kudos to the writer for creating these charming, interesting, and wonderful characters that I wholeheartedly loved and rooted for.

No matter how sad it is I am on the side of loving this ending for them. Because that’s the reality. They were a part of the vanguard army. And even now, in our era, the front liners are the first to get sacrificed. For all of them to survive would be a fairytale.

In a sense, the fact that they all did not survive makes this drama more memorable for me. Because war is ugly. War is ruthless. And war kills people. And these people are not numbers. They are individuals. With loved and beloved ones. With beautiful lives and distinctive personalities. These characters died doing what they believed was right. They died protecting their ideals and loved ones. They died after living and doing their utmost.

Ning Yuan Zhou, you’re a unicorn. A perfect man that does not exist in this world. Thank you for protecting and watching over all my favourite characters.

I love you, drama! Thank you for the eye-cleansing scenarios.

I read online about the ending, and I’m scared 😱

**SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO PLAN TO WATCH**
I’m not new to endings where everyone dies— I actually don’t mind it if it’s done well, a la “One and Only”— but the reviews I read about the ending of this one seems pretty negative 😞 So I’m not sure if I’ll even bother to start

It is about a group of delegations from the state of Wu on a suicide mission. As a viewer, I didn’t expect to fall in love with all of them and their new teammate, but here I am 40 episodes later.
Everyone has their expectations for the ending. Some were disappointed, and some weren’t.

I wasn’t angry with the ending too. Narratively, it made sense. I mean they keep losing numbers each day without reinforcements. It’s a war. They tried holding out as much as they could. I feel proud even. And dang it, Ning Yuanzhou had the best ending. His dying scene reminded me of Baahubali and Maximus from Gladiator.

Yes, and I love Gladiator! Did it have a happy ending? No. Is it re-watchable? Heck, yes, just as I would with AJtL. The brotherhood and sisterhood with absolute loyalty to each other and their cause was quite moving. They stuck together till the very end. Their unique characteristics made me appreciate and cherish each one of them individually.
Li Yu Ning continues to improve as an actor. I would love to see more of him.

Okay, on paper, it makes sense, then, if from the get-go the viewer is told they’re all on a suicide mission. I don’t mind endings wherein major role players die, but I don’t like endings wherein all the ppl die but the reason is stupid and doesn’t make sense to the overall plot

I love this wuxia! I cried a whole river. I’ve never loved many characters in one drama before.
