The Weibo Entertainment Hot Search trend says that “Joy of Life” S2 will premiere on May 15th. The drama’s official Weibo account also indicates that date, but I ain’t getting excited yet 🫣
Yea, it’s rare to see dramas getting an airing/streaming slot so soon after production wraps unless the cast is super popular or the drama is a really anticipated one— in which case, this drama has both of those things. The drama only wrapped filming last year (?), so kudos to the post-production team working so hard to finish things up and being able to get it through the censorship board to push the drama out so soon!
💯
The last I can remember a C-drama getting to air so fast after wrapping production was a modern one, titled, “Sunshine by My Side”:
Filming was from September 27, 2022 to February 7, 2023 and it premiered on September 1, 2023 (same year it wrapped filming). My guess is because it’s a modern drama and filming went really well and there was not much need for post-production (editing, CGI, noise editing, photo shopping, etc.), and the only real worry for the drama was getting passed by the censorship board
That’s interesting that they’re both so different and both made it to the finish line so quickly! I always enjoy your insights into the C-drama world, because I’m definitely not as familiar with it as with the K-drama world 😊
Thanks for the update. That is sooner than I thought. I started the 40 episode cdrama City of the City (iQIYI) which aired episode one on April 9. I hope I can finish it before JOL 2 begins.
How is “City of the City” ?? I’m seeing it appear more and more on my YT feed as a suggestion. It’s been a minute since I’ve opened the actual iQiYi app haha
I am enjoying CITY. I have watched 6 episodes and I only discovered it a few days ago. It has a MISAENG (2014) vibe for me. I really enjoyed young Bai Yu Fan in the historical mystery RIPE TOWN (2023) and the older Yu He Wei in the sci fi THREE-BODY (2023) both available on Viki US. It is set in the world of banking/finance and I hope there is enough material for 40 episodes.
Oooh another drama with the finance industry as the backdrop, nice! I’ve only tried one such drama and I couldn’t get into it— it got a little TOO technical and jargon-filled for my liking— but the current line-up of dramas with the finance industry as the backdrop (the other one I can think of is “War of Faith” (Republican Era financial industry, also on iQiYi) seems to be okay and more character focused, but I can’t really say, since I’m not watching either dramas 😅
