Picked up #SuddenlyThisSummer over the weekend…

…and it’s so good; it hurts to know I really must prep myself for some real nasty angst later in the series. The thing I like about this C-Drama is the male lead isn’t perfect at everything he does. The subjects he’s struggling in happen to be what female lead excels at. They literally study together to get their marks up enough to get into university.

SPOILERS
I enjoyed He Luo’s character growth so much in their high school years. The determination she put to get into the university was truly remarkable. I’ve seen so many high school dramas that focused on main leads studying hard, but this drama will really make you feel like you’re with her in every step she takes to succeed. I might have teared up when she announced that she had made it in! TT____TT That was just a great success story.

My heart really broke with them with that plot twist that separated them. Mr. Smart guy didn’t make it into their first uni choice, but she did! TT_____TT

I’ve only got up to 11 episodes so far, and I`m really scared to like it a lot and be burned by whatever’s going to happen to He Luo and Zhang Yuan. I mean, yes, they’re 18, so young, and they have a whole life ahead of them. I know they can’t be happy at all times, and this long-distance relationship isn’t helping them, but I hope they get to stand the test of time.

Thank you @Ayaan for recommending! I wondered if you had finished this yet and your final thoughts on it! ^___^

Yes I finally got round to finishing the drama, it took a while because I needed a break during the angst period.. I think what I love most about the show is He Luo’s growth and her unwavering determination to see her goals through. It was very moving to see He Luo’s efforts had paid off and she had gotten into university. In dramas it seems that the female lead has to sacrifice her ambitions for love and I’m really glad that He Luo didnt do that and Zhang Yuan didn’t pressure her.

Because I watched this show shortly after A Love So Beautiful, I think I was expecting the more of the same storyline.
Suddenly this summer, I feel is quite realistic of a long distance relationship and the pressure of being in love at such a young age. I didnt realise until reading the translated novel of a love so beautiful , why romance at their age was so discouraged.

I could go on, but I think I will spoil the drama for you! Let me know what you think when you finish the show.
I do think the ending was the best thing for all the characters, the show could have ended 5 episodes earlier in my opinion.

      Thank you for your review!

I’m on ep 21 now and yep definitely starting to feel the angst now, and it’s most likely due to Zhang Yuan. I should have known that one lie from their high school, the one that got He Luo’s hopes up that they would go to same uni together, wouldn’t be the first and last. His lies build up, no matter how good his intentions were. It then becomes easier for him to lie over time. I really feel like he has lost his compass when he was left in town. It’s heartbreaking to see his impatience and impulse actions to be with He Luo. He’s obsessed with her it’s very unhealthy now. This was exactly what happened in their high school days leading to their final exam – He Luo didn’t get distracted, but Zhang Yuan was. We could blame the accident that happened on his wrist that he didn’t make it in to his first choice uni, but I know distraction and overconfidence got over his head. And him juggling between school and work is a deja Vu of what he did in high school. He’s gone way over his head again and wanting a shortcut to get to his goal. He has so much potential, but he keeps losing sight of what the priorities are. 💔

I love He Luo more as the story progresses because she is homesick but she gets her head in the game no matter what. Her determination in high school becomes her strongest point even as she’s just so strong and resilient. She cries over the fact that she’s missing Zhang Yuan so bad, but she strives so hard to keep their distance shorter in a more practical way.

Oh wells let’s see how much more I can stand Zhang Yuan’s stubbornness….😏

I think I stopped watching around then, it’s so frustrating to see Zhang yuan destroy their relationship because he didnt want He Luo to be hurt.
The issue is his lies and inability to own up to his mistakes or choices is what drew them apart.

I definitely think the pressure of having to provide for He luo or be the perfect guy affected him. Every time there is a set back, he just gives up and doesn’t ask for help.
I definitely think both of them need space to work out who they are individually.
