the ending was really sweet not only as a nod to the original series having its main actor there. but also as a tribute to the actors who worked in the original and have already passed away. choi bool am speech was not only our chief detective talking with his old team, but also the actor himself talking with his co-stars from back then.

If LYN had a rabid fanbase equal in craziness and numbers to WHD's, I wouldn't bother to worry about him at all))) Thankfully, he doesn't, but it comes with a price of having to work a little harder to stay relevant. He has other things to rely on tho, as you said, so my comment above was not really a serious concern, but merely an observation of his fluctuating buzz as an actor. I find it unfortunate that he couldn't continue his hit streak directly with another memorable role in a big drama, esp since, unlike in WHD's case, it was 100% not his fault to have unimpressive post-blockbuster follow up. Honestly, I cannot wait for this "blast from the past" to be over so we can finally 100% move to his ML era where his performance would mostly determine result, not circumstances.

I feel very sorry for shimei, because what other options in life she has? She, like most people in their sect, is orphan with nowhere else to go (which is why I majorly side-eye "why didn't she just resist back then?" comments - yep, that would've surely work with the whole sect full of deadly men determined to make her marriage with shifu happen!), and ZBF, for all his faults, was and still is literally the best thing ever happen to her. From our progressive modern standpoint he's not all that, but for her? Clinging for dear life to him and their long lost rosy past is a very logical choice, whether she's doing it consciously or not.

MSD may not seem like a goner plot-wise, but look at it from propaganda perspective - he's not just a small person with conservative mindset like WJL or ZBF, he's a high ranking Qing official! A super close to imperial family one! AND despite all Liu Lin's revolutionary talks he adamantly refuses to accept or support the idea of a total regime change. Will censorship really let someone like him live? Doubt that.

[Drama Chat] K-drama add-ons

@sunnysaturdays If you do check it out, I'd just give it 3 or 4 episodes as the first two can be confusing and awkward (partly because of changes they had to make to the original novel to get the show pass the censorship board).

Someone commented this kind of frightened reaction was more common in J-dramas.

When harabeoji Younghan closed his eyes sitting at the cemetery I shuddered, thinking the show is ending with him passing away there!

@hacja you forget the very important point - in historical setting EVERYONE's lives sucked, not exclusively just women's, even tho they clearly had it worse for the most part. Once you start considering that the whole genre turns into horror you could never unsee it gets easier to appreciate even small victories and limited happiness leads could achieve. After all, who are we to say that OUR times now are so great and enlightened to look down on our ancestors experience? I wouldn't call love stories of my contemporaries I've seen with my own eyes all that grand, romantic or fulfilling either, honestly... Fiction is infinitely better in that regard because it IS fiction, modern or not. But costume shows still have prettier angst AND wardrobe...

Uncle Samsik (Drama Hangout)

by DB Staff

I'm not a fan of movies centered around this era in Korean history. Youth of May helped me to know that, Oasis gave a gentle nod. Nonetheless, I believe the fact that this isn't billed as a romance helped me to watch it so I'm not expecting one tragic love story anywhere.

I'm not a fan of any of the characters here. But I'm intrigued by what they all have to offer.

Kim San is definitely not the kind of politician you want to get into power because it is very easy for him to become corrupted. Why? He's fighting too hard. When someone like him changes ideals, I see them beyond saving.
I'd have preferred if he had Samsik's approach to matters. Be for both the people and don't forget to look out for yourself, judiciously.
I do enjoy this history class. And I look forward to Uncle Samsik defending himself this week.

I also don't understand the clout around Choo Intae. Yes he might be the sort of ideals the people need: peace. But peace isn't just the absence of war. It is the keeping calm of both yourself and those around you in times of chaos. So far so good, he's only after the "peace" of his skin whenever chaos arises. I thought the scruffle that arise during his speech necessitated his being moved to safety. But to look your daughter and mentee in the eye and drive off... it only dipped my doubts about him down more depths.

Politics is better off without people like San and Choo Intae. I look forward to how San turns out, especially how he opposed Minister Kang.

I'd like to give a shout out to Missing Crown Prince, which is holding its own amidst a solid bunch of weekend offerings. It's really a shame that the marketing (at least internationally) was so convoluted and shoddy, and that it got off to such a bad start, especially with the last minute delayed release. Although they may have put a little too much emphasis on the "artsiness" of this production, it's still an engaging story with some really good acting (especially Myung Se Bin as the Dowager Queen). I've been enjoying it each week, and I'm glad to see that its home audience is enjoying it too!
