I think it has a lot to do with how the show treats the person who is villain (has a trauma, is regarded as a piece of shit by everyone around) and how it treats a good guy who fucks up time to time (the perfect hero/ too good for this world).
When the narration is gaslighting the viewer and paints a very normal person as a perfect being, the viewers are put off by that character.
“Gaslighting is a technique that undermines a person’s perception of reality. When someone is gaslighting you, you may second-guess yourself” that is actually what I meant here. The drama showing you one thing and interpreting it differently to make you believe that this is exactly what you should feel.
Also, you wrote like three sentences and I commented on why that happens so often.
People find characters who are too good in the show and also shown as such boring anyway how do you explain that. Also my point is you shouldn’t use the word gaslighting like this.
I get what you are trying to say but I don’t think a character making a few mistakes makes them as bad as the villain. Sure you can like a character who is shitty to everyone over the so called perfect characters who are anything but that. But when a character isn’t perfect and the character is also not shown as perfect either and people still think their actions are comparable to someone who have done terrible things and complain basically asking for complex characters but then hating them for it anyway I can’t help but make a statement like that.
There’s only so many ‘terrible to everyone’ characters I can take cause I also don’t like it when a show tries too hard to make me like a shitty person either.

And suddenly words like complex, human, character development don’t mean anything.

I am not talking about that. Plus people complain if they are NOT perfect expecting them to be.
