Rounding out the Boys Before Flowers cast

Kim So-eun (Yuki), Lee Shi-young (Sakurako)

Yeah, I know I’m posting a lot about Boys Before Flowers, but nothing else is getting me all that excited these days. Plus, it goes to show just how anticipated this drama is when we get news reporting not just on the leading actors, but even the very peripheral members of the cast.

So, with the main characters all lined up (the boy-men of Flower Four, main character Makino, beautiful model Shizuka, and tough older sister Tsubaki), now it’s time to turn our attentions to the rest.

Gu Hye-sun‘s (Makino) character’s best friend Ga-eul (meaning Autumn; Yuki in the manga) is 19-year-old new actress Kim So-eun — and yes, she will share a “fresh” and “dramatic” storyline with Kim Bum’s Soujiro (er, So Yi-jung).

Sakurako will be taken on by 24-year-old Lee Shi-young, who recently drew attention for her role as Yeon-hwa in the sageuk drama Kingdom of the Wind. I haven’t seen her act, but she definitely looks the part — fresh and innocent on the outside, but potentially “I will cut you” on the inside. Her character’s name is Oh Min-ji.

The Geum family

Of particular note are the members of main character Jan-di’s family. (By the way, it does appear that Gu’s character name has been changed from Yeon-woo to Jan-di, which means grass.)

First you have her father, played by actor Ahn Seok-hwan, now in his fourth drama collaboration with director Jeon Ki-sang. You probably recognize him as Jae Hee’s dad from Delightful Girl Chun-hyang and Witch Amusement, or from My Girl, or as the China-phile (is that a word?) minister in Hong Gil Dong. The dad operates a dry-cleaning store and the Geum family is staunchly middle-class (though closer to the lower end).

Mom is gonna get some Goong comparisons, since she’ll be played by Im Ye-jin, who played Yoon Eun-hye’s mom in that drama (which is funny since the Japanese Hanadan mom always reminded me of her).

Jan-di’s little bro is a precocious computer geek played by 13-year-old Park Ji-bin (My Man’s Woman, Yi San). (Sorry, that picture is probably a year or two old.)

The mean girls

Now that our big names have been doled out among the main cast, there are some new faces mixed in with the rest of the cast. These tertiary characters have been cast on the basis of their closeness to the original manga characters, as well as their ability to mesh well the principals.

The three mean girls at school who torment Jan-di (named Jin-hee, Seon-ja, Mi-sook) will be played by the trio above. From left to right, they are Kook Ji-yeon (who reminds me of Bin), Jang Ja-yeon, and Min Young-won (put on some clothes, woman).

Kook is a 24-year-old model, Jang is a 26-year-old model, and Min is an actress of indeterminate age who’s done an episode of Drama City and had a role in a 2003 drama Twenty Years Old.

Jan-di and Ga-eul work in a joohk (rice porridge) restaurant run by Kim Ki-bang (Lovers, Thank You, New Heart), at right. His role is a comic one, as his character believes he receives messages from aliens.

The drama began filming on November 5, and will travel abroad for its overseas shoots sometime mid-month. The 24-episode drama premieres at the end of December on KBS.

Here we have Jan-di (Gu Hye-sun) on her bike, and Jun-pyo (Lee Min-ho) sporting Tsukasa’s famous permed hair:

Boy, does he look the part! Kim Hyun-joong gives his Ji-hoo character Rui’s soft touch:

Kim Bum as So Yi-jung (Soujiro):

Kim Joon as Woo-bin (Akira):

Here is where I start to worry that the Korean version will mirror the Japanese one too closely… I hope they don’t take that path (and I have hope), because the comparisons are going to be inevitable anyway, and we don’t need to see an exact replica. Below, Ji-hoo parts with Han Chae-young’s glamorous character at the airport:

This time Ji-hoo talks with Jan-di while the rest of F4 wait nearby:

These may be hard to make out, but they are of Gu Hye-sun in her high school uniform. The Korean student who posted these on her blog today (Nov. 13) explains that she’d arrived at school in Daegu to find buses bearing the title “Boys Before Flowers” on the side. She texted her friends and took phone-cam photos while Gu Hye-sun shot her scene. Crew members joked that her uniform was obviously fake (re: the short length). The blogger said Gu was adorable and pretty, but her makeup was way too white.

Lee Min-ho wears the perm well, imo. The blogger who took the photos points out that the sunglassed and hatted man in the first pic is Director Jeon. Apparently Lee had come out to watch them shooting a scene he wasn’t in (allowing fans a closer look than expected), and the director eventually reminded him, “I told you not to come out before I called you.”

(Who’s excited now?)

I am so excited!! Though I hope they copy the storyline exactly. Since they've got more episodes, I really want to see them expand the Soujiro and Yuuki story, which they probably will since kdramas love their romance.

oh fark~~ now i'm way too much excited! everybody looks great!

i guessed right! Ahn Seok-hwan (who played a father in My Sassy Girl) will be Jandi's dad! haha i wished they got his wife at my sassy girl (and Madam Noh on Hong gildong) to play as the mother. they are farking hilarious. :D

KIM HYUN JOONG! look sizzling hot! *dies* he's way too perfect for the role. he has this certain prince-y look. *dies again*

lee minho looks a lot like jerry yan (dao ming zi from taiwan f4) it's because of that infamous permed hair. gahh~~

hope we wouldn't get disappointed with the acting and the story line. :DD

*even the store owner looks cute! ahaha dorks rulee.

North Korean pornography?!? WTF Conan LOL?

Anyhoo, oh happy day!!!!

Let's review the look of the cast:

Jun-Pyo/Doumyoji: Wow, I love the look. Doumyoji's curly hair has always looked ludicrous (there, the 80ish-ness of the manga is really obvious) when done live, but here it's just done right. Arrogant, stern, a little sad. I love it.
Ji-Hoo/Rui: OMG he's beautiful. I mean, Kim Hyun-joong has always been really pretty, but damn this bitch is BEAUTIFUL!!! Love the aloofness in the 2nd picture. That's Rui. Sigh. Can we have MakinoxRui?
Yi-jung/Sojiro: I really liked Soujiro in the J-drama, partially because Matsuda Shota has a fairly "Canto" vibe about him. But this is closer to how I imagined Sojiro from the manga.
Akira/Woo-Bin: Eh. This one is a miss for me.

Han Chae-young/Shizuka: I didn't like the J-drama version of Shizuka, and as you said, it looks like they're using the same interpretation. That said, the casting is so spot-on for that Shizuka that it's almost Han Chae Young playing Han Chae Young.

Lee Shi-young/Sakurako: Her part in Kingdom of the Wind is kinda typical, so I can't say how her Sakurako will be. I really hope they don't use the J-drama version of Sakurako here. She's a fun character, but her character, as originally conceived in the manga, can be re-interpreted into a lot more (and relevant given the popularity of plastic surgery among teenagers.)

hmmmm, I hope they really don't make this a wxact copy of the jdorama.
But everyone looks great especially Kim Hyun-joong but I'm still a little worried about his acting skills I mean Shun Oguri is just a great actor who really did a excellent job portraying Rui.
Am I just crazy or does Lee Min-ho look like Takuya Kimura in those pictures ???

Very beautiful cast... But I remembered I really hated that trio of girl b's in Hanadan. The whiny voices! Argh! Haha, I forgot Lee Min Ho had to get a perm. He doesn't look so bad but I guess I'll have to watch him in action lo love his hairdo. Right now I have to stifle a a laugh like when I first saw MatsuJun in a perm... XD

Kyaa! kim bum! Although for some reason I always think the actor that portrays Akira is Soujiro and vice versa.... I don't really like the style they chose for Kim Bum clothes though.

Hey, so a curly hairdo that isn't weird! I really want to watch this now.. and it has to be somewhat different right, since the setting is super different.

Lee Min-ho looks surprisingly adorable with that curly hair, but why such long bangs on Kim Bum? You don't cover up a beautiful face like that, silly production team!

OMG, I can't wait for this!! Everybody looks great. I'm afraid I have my hopes up too much because I absolutely loved HYD - especially Season 1, which I thought was perfect!

Kim Hyun-joong sure is a prettier Rui than his Japanese counterpart.

I wonder how long it will take me to call them by their Korean names and not Makino, Domyoji and Rui. :-)

Omg, I really do hope that they manage to pull this off, if not make it better :D
The boys are looking so pretty, heh.

I like them pulling in newbies for the supporting cast, and Yuki looks potentially compatible with KimBum :D

@Mimi
I love both the TW and Jap cast for Rui so far. Not loving HyunJoong, but he does look awfully Rui.

lol.. wow min ho does look like Doumyoji!!
and jihoo's look by hyunjoong is sooo nice..
and lastly i love kim bum's look... and of course im excited about his role.

from the jap versions, i really like rui and soujiro characters the best.
so im excited for them.
but im happy that doumyoji part is cast well.. appearance wise.

aaahhhh so excited.
i know there will be comparisons. i hope these guys will be able to accept the critique but also sort of the reality of it all. i hope they all do a good job and do it the best they can.

I couldn't handle watching the same story three times...not once...not twice...but three times!

Kim Bum looks SO adorable!!!!
I laughed my head off at the perm cuz I didn't think they would incorporate it into the Korean version...loll...i guess I was wrong...I absolutely despised Matsujun's perm in HYD...it looked like a small animal crawled onto his head and died...I guess JunPyo's perm is done a little more tastefully...
Loving the hair on Kim Hyun Joong, so careless but so handsome! He's REALLY skinny though...look at his waistline!!!
The F4 look really good! I wonder how Hye Sun is going to match up...

EVER.

"I laughed my head off at the perm cuz I didn’t think they would incorporate it into the Korean version…loll…i guess I was wrong…I absolutely despised Matsujun’s perm in HYD…it looked like a small animal crawled onto his head and died…"

Yeah, but Douymouji's curls are what they are; you can't really get around it. It also speaks to Kamio-sensei's fashion and pop influences really coming from the 80s (esp. in the sheer excess that you see in the story) when she started writing the manga. It's ironically a better fit now in 2005 or 2000.

Also -- and it could be the completely inappropriate heat today in SoCal warping my brain -- with the hair and the clothing choices, he looks a little bit like Leslie Cheung in Days of Being Wild.

"she’s a bit too old, and her face is too plastic…"

Goo Hye Sun is all natural, but she wears circle lenses, which enhances her ullzang look.

@kirara,

"but I can’t figure out who exactly who Lee Shi Young is…"

She is Prince Yeo-jin's girlfriend/Kim Hye Ri's slap doll in the show.

"Perm on boys is gonna be so in once this drama starts!"

I think perms are already in general (see Rain and Philosopher King Yonsama.) But I think Kim Hyun-joong's JE-style haircut will be the sensation, and it'll officially mark the beginning where SM/YG boy idols start adopting the Johnny Boy look.

So far, K-pop boy bands have been fairly successful in Japan, but mostly among housewives and such. (40-year old okasans and Big Bang? Yup.) THIS Rui will break into the Johnny fangirl audience. And if not, Taiwan will be HIS!

the first picture of Lee Min Ho is like looking at the very image of the real Tsukasa for me that is..the unapprochable and high-and-mighty "ORESAMA" look!
Kin Hyun Joong does look the part of RUi..oh that sad face! haha

well we can't help but compare it with the Jap version coz that one was successful enough that nobody would think of another version would come up again..

let's just wait...

hmm, although i would've liked to see some other actors in these roles, i don't necessarily think they're...well...UGLY. kim bum is so cute! :P

i'm starting to get more excited about this drama as well. i WAS against Kim Hyun Joong in the role of rui but seeing him on WGM and seeing these scene shots of him as the character has changed my mind. however, i still don't see Goo Hye Sun as makino. she's a good actress but i don't think she fits the role physically...i hope she proves me wrong! :) i have a feeling i might be more interested in the yuki/soujiro storyline in this series than the main characters! i just love me some kim bum!
