Ji Sung goes all in for Swallow the Sun

Actor Ji Sung (New Heart) is throwing himself into his next role, training intensely for upwards of nine hours every day.

This is for the new SBS drama Swallow the Sun [태양을 삼켜라], which has been casually referred to as the “All In sequel” because of the reteaming of director Yoo Chul-yong and writer Choi Wan-kyu, but it’s not really a proper sequel (think more along the lines of the Lovers “trilogy”). Still, even if it isn’t a follow-up to the wildly popular 2003 drama series All In (which starred then-couple Lee Byung-heon and Song Hye-gyo), the high-profile names involved makes this one of 2009’s more anticipated projects. Well, for most people, I suppose (not so much me).

Ji Sung started his training four months ago, which includes diving, weight training, boxing, and taekwondo. On top of that, since his character rides a motorcycle, he went out and bought his own bike to familiarize himself.

These photos come from the shoot that took place on the 17th; the scene involved illegal gambling and scuba diving, and the underwater filming spanned twelve hours.

Then, on the 26th, Ji Sung left for Johannesburg, South Africa, where he will spend the next two weeks filming. Following that, he heads to Las Vegas for some more overseas shoots.

In Swallow the Sun, his character was born out of wedlock and spent his childhood in an orphanage, growing up tough and stubborn amidst adverse circumstances. However, despite his harsh exterior, he changes with the love of a woman (of course), played here by Sung Yuri (Hong Gil Dong).

Swallow the Sun premieres on Wednesdays and Thursdays in July, and also stars Lee Wan (Insoon Is Pretty) and Yoo Oh-sung (Lump of Sugar).

I was in until I saw Sung Yuri......Can't hang with her. She was one of the main reasons I quit watching HGD, though I adore KJW.

I recently just caught up with the drama "New Heart" (thanks to DramaFever!), and I thought he did an excellent job in there. Hence, I'll be looking forward to his new role now. =]

Lol, I did not realize Ji Sung is cast in Swallow the Sun.

He's a good, solid actor. Haven't watched his last project-New Heart (not my type of drama) but I adore Ji Sung & Eugene in Save The Last Dance for Me. He was good in All In as well but Song Hyo's emotionless acting spoiled the show for me.

Looking forward to this drama.

I confess that I'm more looking forward to Iris, but Swallow the Sun looks like fun too. I know this is being called All In 2, but I just don't see evidence of the crazy production aspirations and location shooting of that show, which made it one of my favorite "popcorn K--dramas" of all time.

@#13 belleza

I was looking forward to Iris as well but wasn't sure when Kim Tae Hee joins the cast. I hope she will surprise us all with a good performance. It's been so long since her last drama project and she sounds determined to prove herself as a real actress this time.

Swallow the Sun will finish before Iris starts in September, won't it?

"Swallow the Sun will finish before Iris starts in September, won’t it?"

It's listed as such on wiki, BUT it also depends whether SBS intends to air Iris on their Mon/Tue or Wed/Thursday lineup. I think the September date is if it follows Swallow the Sun.

Also, Choi Wan Kyu has a hand in Iris as well, and since CWK will actually write for Swallow the Sun, there may be some shifting around the schedule. Given Ja Myung Go's ratings, they may try to shorten the run of the show. If that's so, Swallow gets pushed up.

SBS did a lot of this kind of shuffling last year, especially when Big Fish went down. Iljimae was shuffled around to run in 3 different seasons (as late as winter 2008) before it finally got aired in the spring.

"I was looking forward to Iris as well but wasn’t sure when Kim Tae Hee joins the cast. "

The thing is, this cast is freakishly, freakishly loaded. Iris is the very essence of the SBS superstar vehicle. Kim Seung Woo, Jung Joon Ho and Lee Byung Hun are all movie stars. Even if Kim Tae Hee can't carry her part, you got sexy Kim So Yeon who'll probably play the obligatory femme fatale. And THEN you got Spock I mean TOP to round the ish out.

Lee Byung Hun is notorious as a Russell Crowe-like tiger onset (though it's all about the work, and LBH has been SBS's go-to-guy to carry their uber-budget projects) Even GF-at-the-time Song Hye Kyo felt really intimidated by him when they were shooting. So if Kim Tae Hee is not up to snuff, she'll know it. :D

Kinda wished Hu Joon Ho was on this show though. Their chemistry together is undeniable.

I'm definitely looking forward to this drama. Ji Sung is a great actor and Yung Suri has shown a lot of improvement. Besides, both are physically blessed with good looks.

All In and Swallow the Sun have a lot of similarities. Interestingly Jisung played second lead in All In. And I find Jisung playing lead in Swallow the Sun much more interesting than Lee Byung Hun playing the lead in All In. Dunno why I've never felt the appeal of Lee Byung Hun.

Jisung was good in Save the Last Dance. It surprised me that he does macho stuff so well in Swallow the Sun. His chemistry with his leading ladies is not that great but he compensates with some really good acting and of course the sexy strides, great looks and love his really unique voice.
