News bites: April 22, 2024

  • Excuse me while I hold my breath for tvN’s The Midnight Romance in Hagwon, rapt under the spell of Wie Ha-joon (Gyeongseong Creature) in the latest posters – not that Jung Ryeo-won (May It Please the Court) isn’t bringing the pretty herself. With the premiere now just a few weeks away on May 11, the nights of love will be coming to our screens through the talented hands of PD Ahn Pan-seok (One Spring Night, Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food) and writer Park Kyung-hwa. [News1]

  • Character posters have dropped for SBS’s Connection, showcasing the many faces of detective Ji Sung (Adamas) and journalist Jeon Mi-do (Thirty-Nine). With the mysterious death of a mutual high school friend at the center of the crime-mystery, the series takes off on May 24 with always-a-prosecutor Kwon Yul (Longing for You) and chaebol Kim Kyung-nam (The One and Only) co-starring. [SBS]

  • LG’s U+ Mobile TV announced their cast for the new youth series Fragile, promising us a ~hyperreal~ dive into this generation, from dating to social media, and conflicting with adults. Gathering a fresh-faced group to heighten the feel of everyday students, our story stars Kim So-hee, Kim Eo-jin, Park Seung-jin, Kwon Hee-song, and Moon Ji-won among other rookies selected through an audition process. Production for the series has PD Ahn Ji-hoon at the helm. [Newsen]
  • In more casting news for Amazon Prime’s upcoming Butterfly, Kim Ji-hoon (Death’s Game) is the latest to confirm joining the lineup, headlined by Daniel Dae Kim and Reina Hardesty. Adapted from a graphic novel series by the same title, the six-episode spy-thriller also stars Park Hae-soo (Narco-Saints) and Kim Tae-hee (Lies Hidden in My Garden). [News1]

  • New character posters and an official teaser takes the stage for Netflix’s black comedy and suspense series The 8 Show. With our cast of eight led by Ryu Joon-yeol (Human Disqualification), Chun Woo-hee (Delightfully Deceitful), and Park Jung-min (Hellbound), the performance is set to begin on May 17. In the meantime, we can find a use for their bizarre 60 minute timer that I’m still scratching my head about. [Sports Donga]
  • Over on KBS, the promos continue with a new bundle stills of L (a.k.a. Kim Myung-soo)(Numbers) and Lee Yoo-young (Insider) in Dare to Love Me. With our clashing pair coming from what feels like different worlds, love will conquer the divide when the rom-com begins on May 13. Production has PD Jang Yang-ho directing with scripts by Park Yumi. [Newsen (1), (2)]

I really liked Jeon Mido in any role I’ve seen her in so far, so I’d watch CONNECTION for her if I’m in the mood for a crime drama (which I very seldomly are, TBH, but sometimes it hits me).

DARE TO LOVE ME stills look pretty. But I’m wary of this one - at least a little bit. Why do I have the feeling the ML’s character might be straight up unlikable? 🤔

Kinda dreading & wishing for May to come soon, so many dramas to choose from! 👏🥳☕️

I am most interested in Connection.

Jeon Mi Do looks so pretty in the posters. I only know her as Chae Song Hwa in HosPlaylist. Looking forward to see her in a new role.

Here for my favourite genre: So I will put Connection and Butterfly. I don't usually go for a teacher-student romance, but since they are all grown ups and they only enter the relationship once the guy left school, I might give it a shot, since I rarely watch romcoms.

I’m not logged into YouTube on this device, so when I went over to check out that AMAZING 60-minute timer thingy @tccolb linked for The 8 Show (Everyone go! How long did you last? How do you think they shot it? Why did they do it? Did it sell you on the show?), I ended up in a “stars of QoT” interview rabbit hole for quite…some…time. It is like they are trying to one-up each other at being charming!!

I recommend this entire experience to others.

What the what is that timer? I watched through the first round of each actor, then ff'd to the end. Loved the classical music tho.

I had to laugh at the top recommended video for me in the side bar, which was titled, "When people aren't supportive of your Korean learning." 😂 Every vid rec was related to Korean in some way, but nothing about QoT, which I'm not watching 🤪

LOL. "When people aren't supportive of your Korean learning," a.k.a. Many a Beanie's Homelife! 🤗🤔♥

I can't help but wonder what the actors were directed to do for that timer sequence!!! Aaaand, it makes me hope that The 8 Show ends up like a Korean "Clue: The Movie." I shall not get my hope, but hey, such is life!

I hope you used the 60 minute timer to limit your exposure to Kim Soo Hyun. I've read that staring too long at him can lead to eye damage or even blindness.

I just want to put a pin here to mark the fact that you've clearly set me up for a really good joke here that I, sadly, don't feel at liberty to tell. But in saying at least this, I hope you can tell it to/for yourself.

Authentic ob skene humor here on Dramabeans today.

I looked more into The 8 show and now I can't wait for it.
Oh, and The Midnight Romance in Hagwon for Wie Ha-joon if they keep it clean.

No. 2. SBS’s CONNECTION. Of the above dramas this is definitely the one I will watch if available. Back in my early days in kdramaland Ji Sung made a huge impression with SBS’s M/T drama DEFENDANT (2017) (Nielsen average nationwide rating: 21.69% with a range of 14.5% to 28.3%). With this ensemble cast I am getting a similar vibe. In CONNECTION we have one degrees of separation from DEFENDANT in both Ji Sung and Kim Kyung-nam. KKN is really coming up in roles and I couldn’t be happier. In DEFENDANT KKN played ML’s male secretary. If you are watching HIDE young actor Kim Min is giving a nice performance in one of these roles as Yoon Sook-goo. Now in CONNECTION KKN will be playing a chaebol! Kwon Yul continues to be a concern. I hope his role has some real meat to it.

My first Ji Sung series was 'Secret Love', a tense twisted ride spiralling downward into love in which his character stalks pitiful Hwang Jung Eun in dark-hearted revenge, but ends up falling for her instead. Then compare that intense role to his comedic multi-personalities in the dramedy 'Kill Me Heal Me' and you get a sense of the bandwidth his stellar acting talents operate on. Also liked 'Defendant' and 'The Devil Judge'. So 'Connection' will be a must for me. I trust his choices. 'Butterfly' tempts me because of the Spy-thriller aspect...and 'maybe' will try Midnight Romance in spite of the FL choice (just my quirky opinion but none if her characters left me wanting more.) For some reason I'm feeling like digging into my dramatic side rather as opposed to going on a romantic ride.

I think I misinterpreted what Soompi’ mentioned about “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon“. I can’t see it as ‘coming’ in my region’s Viki. Sigh.

Will any of the dramas be available for viewing in the USA? We're like the unwanted stepchild!

Tell me about it.
Let’s look at Viki US. Currently I am watching three dramas on Viki US from cable outfits: HIDE, LOVELY RUNNER and THE MIDNIGHT STUDIO. Thank you Viki for licensing dramas from the cable networks.
As of today Viki US’s “Coming Soon” list is a desert for the big three networks (KBS, SBS and MBC).
Only one upcoming kdrama is listed as coming soon and that is Zuho’s 6 episode UNDER THE GUN. All 6 episodes will be available on April 29. UDG is promoted as a “Viu Original”.

Correction. UDG= UNDER THE GUN or UNDER DA GUN.

The same with my region’s Viki under its “coming soon”. The dramas are overwhelmingly Chinese which aren’t my thing. I hope they license any/some of the good KDs coming out in May as well as JDs and Taiwanese ones.

Fragile sounds like it could be a longer version of the darker drama specials Nineteen otters and Everything and Nothing, maybe the youth version of Dear my friends.
