Eugene talks about her new drama role

Creating Destiny [인연 만들기] is actress-singer Eugene‘s next project, and the star recently spoke out about the cheerful romantic comedy. She plays a lawyer-to-be who had grown up in Australia, who has a “Tom and Jerry-like” series of encounters with Ki Tae-young, the man with whom she is set up for an arranged marriage. (I presume “Tom and Jerry-like” means their relationship is antagonistic, rather than one always trying to kill the other, who always outsmarts him.)

The drama features many veteran actors like Ban Hyo-jung, Im Hyun-shik and Kang Nam-gil, and is as much about familial love as it is about romantic love. Eugene explained why she picked this project, saying, “When I read the script, the plot was incredibly refreshing. … I think this will be an original drama. If you consider that most of the dramas these days show young people falling in love and their parents opposing the match, this drama starts off the compete opposite.”

Eugene explained that it was easier getting into character because she is similar to her character; they both enjoy romantic manhwas and grew up overseas. They both also have bright and upbeat personalities, so acting the part is not terribly difficult.

Creating Destiny is scheduled for an October 10 premiere.

I’d be excited to watch this.

I just saw her in the drama Wonderful Life. I really liked it (what a surprise! I thought I’d hate it) and I’d be interested to see her in something new.

  2. Angela

Ooh, the relationship sounds a bit like Ranma/Akane from Ranma 1/2. I wonder if their parents will be constantly trying to push them together, while they constantly bicker and fight. Sounds like fun!! ^_^

  3. bluebunny

I’m exicited to see it!!! I’m fan of hers…I think she’s a sweet girl.

  4. lovin it

    where did eugene grow up?

  5. Biscuit

@Angela: Although the arranged marriage story is quite common, isn’t Ranma about a boy turning into a girl whenever he touches cold water….?

Well, at least Eugene is fluent in English. From her bio, it said she grew up in Guam.

I didn’t really like her last drama, 3 Dads and 1 Mom since it started to bore me during the end. I hope this romantic-comedy stays fun til the end ^^”’

  6. bamboo

She’s looking good & wow i love her outfit! I’m really a huge fan of Korean fashion, they’re so stylish! Love the colour combination on this one & the skirt, my style! Ooopps i’m sorry i took away the topic which is her new project, i’ll surely look f/ward to watching this as i liked her also in Wond. Life, Save the Last Dance and others. Thnx javabeans for this article!

  7. peanut butter

as pretty as always =] i just might watch this. i was a fan of s.e.s back in the day, but i never bothered to watch any of eugene’s dramas. she’s definitely as cute as a button though!

  8. ames4eva

yes I love her outfit too! lol, and hopefully I’ll get to watch this coz I’m liking the description of it :)

  9. Molly

Oooh I love her outfit too! :) This drama sounds a bit unorthodox – best of luck to her!

  10. 10 Kobe

Eugene is such a likable person sometimes I wonder whether she has any antis. I just can’t imagine it. Can’t wait for this, hope it does well.

  11. 11 Raina

She’s the only Korean actor I know who doesn’t speak English with an accent.

Loved her in “Really Really Like You”.
(Well, her country bumpkin accent was very annoying but it was a great
drama. One of the best I’ve seen.)

  12. 12 belleza

Her English is actually really sexy, kind of a low purr. She and Brian MC’d the Korean Music Festival the year I went, and they had good rapport.

“3 Dads and 1 Mom since it started to bore me during the end”

It was kinda fun guessing who might “win” in the end. For QOH/MFL fans, Yoon Sang Hyun plays her husband, though he’s only around for one episode. I recall they getting frisky on the show.

    @Kobe,

Yeah, I think her popularity among guys is up there among all-time members of K-pop girl groups. Kinda the perfect “girlfriend next door” type.

“It was kinda fun guessing who might “win” in the end.”

That’s why I just FF to the end, heh heh.

Even though it does seem impossible that she would have antis, I’m sure there are many jealous antis every now and than. But I don’t think she has many.

  14. 14 gallivanter

This sounds promising! I’ll tune in; I haven’t seen Eugene in anything before, but she seems quite likable.

  15. 15 reenna

sounds interesting. i can’t wait to see the drama…

  16. 16 Jeniper Mose

You are lucky Eugene no hicups in 3 dads & 1 mom , pretty gal !!.

  17. 17 Angela

@Biscuit: Yeah, that’s why I said the *relationship* sounds similar. It’s pretty obvious there won’t be any water-activated curses going on… ;)

This is totally random but Eugene actually filmed in Sydney and was filming at the house next to where my friend lives (The crew asked the residents of the houses in the area which are like massive almost mansion sized buldings but my friend’s house wasn’t chosen T_____T) and she took some photos. We spent AGES trying to figure out who she was (cause I only had low quality pics to look at and she’s not that into Korean culture) and at first a Korean friend of my friend said it was Sung Yuri and I was like NO WAY and then afterwards she asked the crew and they said it was Eugene :D End of story :D

^Two of the photos that she took :D

  19. 19 Kender

Wait, Ki Tae-young is the guy? o.o How did I miss that?! I liked him in Terroir before the script turned him insane. >O

This sounds kind of cute, actually. I might have to tune in once Tamra ends. (I don’t want it to end. ;_;)

  20. 20 robbo4

The girl who hooked me into Korean drama. She’s just about as naturally sweet and pretty as any female in the business. Speaking on behalf of the male population: If she has any antis, you can be certain that none of them are guys!

  21. 21 belleza

“If she has any antis, you can be certain that none of them are guys!”

Let’s put it this way. The reason why she has antis is because everybody’s boyfriend is still in love with her.

  22. 22 Hmmm....

When i see Eugene, i think of romantic comedies. This is good choice for her since she has lot of that sort of role playing under her belt. Hope this drama is good

  23. 23 Kobe

    @KC

Thanks for those pix! What area in Sydney was it and is that guy supposed to be her boyfriend in the drama?

@belleza (12): “Yeah, I think her popularity among guys is up there among all-time members of K-pop girl groups. Kinda the perfect “girlfriend next door” type.”

This makes me wonder who will be the girls turning into actresses from the new generation of girl groups? I would love to see Yuri because she’s just so damn HOT! But would love to see Tiffany too because of her excellent English. Imagine Eugene and Tiffany in the same drama fighting over Daniel Henney? We’ll have an entire Korean drama in English :D

  24. 24 robbo4

Throw in Jeong Ryeo Won and Han Ye Seul and maybe we could have a Korean drama with Korean subtitles!

  25. 25 belleza

“This makes me wonder who will be the girls turning into actresses from the new generation of girl groups? ”

Eugene is kinda the Drew Barrymore of Korean rom-com.. Like other Piscean Korean actresses — Ko Hyun Jung, Han Hyo Joo, Lee Na Young, (though not) Sung Yu Ri — she has that dreamy aura that brings out your inner child. She, like KHJ, is born to do “noona romance” dramas. I’m serious when I say she can achieve GREATNESS if they ever do My Name is S.E.S. :D

Closest fit to Eugene really is bubbly Yuri. And, yes, my brother’s in love with Yuri. Even his wife was like “Yeah, I can see why boys like her.” Of course, men are stupid. :D

YoonA from SNSD– this goes without saying
Seo In Young from Jewelry — she’s a HOOT in Style
So Hee from Wondergirls. — probably the Sung Yu Ri of this generation

  26. 26 Kobe

“Throw in Jeong Ryeo Won and Han Ye Seul and maybe we could have a Korean drama with Korean subtitles!”

Oh yes, forgot about her. I guess we could throw JRW into the mix with Eugene, Tiffany and Henney and we’d have 3 Mom’s and 1 Dad, in English, with Korean subs. Yep, now it’s the Koreans’ turn to wait for subs :D

“Closest fit to Eugene really is bubbly Yuri. And, yes, my brother’s in love with Yuri.”

The same brother who likes Song Hye Kyo? If he’s the one then tell him he’s got great taste in women! I don’t know what I would do if Yuri were to do a k-drama. I’d probably drool, faint then combust. Maybe not in that order either…

  27. 27 belleza

“If he’s the one then tell him he’s got great taste in women! ”

Oh I know. His wife looks like Han Hye Jin. (When watching Jumong, she was like “see, I have star quality!!)

In terms of Song Hye Kyo, he’s actually only seen Autumn Tale. First time he saw her, he was like “WHO is that?!?” On the other hand, he finds Kim Tae Hee kinda plain.

In my observations, the 3 most popular Korean actresses among Chinese BOYS are old Song Hye Kyo, Kim Tae Hee, and Eugene. (You may ask about Jeon Ji Hyun. Surprisingly no.) In Korea, Eugene is considered cute, Song Hye Kyo is “not thin enough”, and Kim Tae Hee is “natural beauty,” . In Taiwan, Eugene is considered truly beautiful. Song Hye Kyo is considered mind-numbingly beautiful (SHK is kinda in a league of her own among Chinese guys.) And Kim Tae Hee is considered “very pretty.”

I mean, this also works among the guys. Won Bin, Song Seung Heon, and Jang Dong Gun. There’s your big three in Taiwan.
