Cinderella’s Sister: Episode 14

Okay, I’m starting to sound like a broken record, I know. But while this episode is chock full of events, one of which, pictured above, is something we’ve been waiting seven thousand years for, none of them actually results in anything changing. At least not in the episode itself. Maybe things that happen here will show their effect down the road…but here’s the thing…there’s not THAT much road left to go. If we’re still taking one step forward, two steps back, I don’t know what on earth we’ve spent fourteen episodes establishing, if we could have just ended where we began. Needless to say, this is the episode that shattered what was left of my sanity, as you will witness below…

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Ki-hoon stands at his father’s bedside, and thankfully, he isn’t responsible for yet another father’s death, as Daddy Hong is alive and well. Darn it; the evil ones never die. With Ki-hoon, I’m starting to think that guilt might actually be a character trait rather than an emotion: What’s his deal? Oh, that dude? Yeah…he’s kind, emotionally stunted, and REALLY guilt-ridden. Like schooled-by-nuns kind of guilt.

He asks his father if he couldn’t just give it all up—the war, the family feud. He supposes that if Daddy Hong collapsed at Ki-hoon’s words, then maybe somewhere deep down, he wants a real relationship with his son, much like an Earth father might. I wouldn’t hold my breath; I’m pretty sure the man’s heart shriveled up sometime in the 80s. Ki-hoon says heartbreakingly, that if his father wanted, he could leave it all behind, and live in a tiny house where the two of them could go fishing. And if there’s a chance she’ll forgive him, he’d bring a certain stubborn skinny girl to be his daughter-in-law, so he could raise their child. Aw! Sadly, this is not that drama. Perhaps you are on the wrong channel?

In a move surprising to no one, Daddy Hong turns him down. He’ll keep his miserable millions, thanks. Curses! Nice try though, Ki-hoon. You get points for verbalizing your dream to marry Eun-jo and make babies, even if you’re constantly voicing these things TO THE WRONG person…but whatever. Daddy Hong agrees to be hands-off, but warns him that Ki-jung will not let him go so easily, and there’ll come a day when Ki-hoon will need his father’s help. Allegiance is a poor substitute for love; doubly so when it comes with such a giant string attached.

Kang-sook puts away Dae-sung’s diaries, lovingly caressing the last one that revealed his bottomless love for her. Hyo-sun comes into the room, wanting to lean on her mother for comfort. Kang-sook lets her, for just a second, and Hyo-sun tells her that she got rejected today. She seeks comfort, but Kang-sook gives her none, lost in her own reverie. Can we just stop to marvel at how good Lee Mi-sook looks in this scene?

Jang ajusshi has called Jung-woo out to fetch Eun-jo, after her fake/not-fake/maybe-unintentionally-not-fake-by-accident suicide attempt. Jang, hopefully scared straight for the last time, leaves, and Jung-woo sweetly hands him the money in his pockets, telling him to eat something. In case there’s some confusion about the money thing, my understanding is that the previous episode’s money was solicited by and paid to the thugs, who heard Jang loudmouth about Kang-sook’s money. He was just the kidnapped pawn, and therefore the truest sadsack, since his pathetic ass had to be ransomed by Eun-jo, the girl who hates him most in the world.

Eun-jo is shivering and nearly catatonic in the backseat, and Jung-woo dutifully takes her home. She shrugs off his help, wandering into the house on her own like a zombie, looking in on Mom with her trademark I’m-two-steps-from-crazy look on her face. But Mom’s still sitting in that same place, like a statue, frozen in her own emotional haze.

Eun-jo’s reaction after the suicide attempt makes me think that even if she did plan it as a scare tactic, something inside her stirred and broke in the moment. Because even though I think she had planned to play the role of her mother’s daughter, that very thing is also what she has feared most her whole life. And her agony at not being able to end her pain, even if she didn’t intend to die—that seemed real. What actually moved me more than anything else in that scene was her confession of wanting to kill Jang in his sleep. I could totally picture this drama veering into a horror/revenge plot that would be nine kinds of awesome and far more exciting than what we’re getting now.

Eun-jo goes to her room, where Hyo-sun is waiting; she asks if Eun-jo won’t play with her. Spoken like a true little sister. Eun-jo’s got the typical big sister look on her face, like you want me to what, after the day I’ve had? But Hyo-sun starts to tell her that she got rejected today by the guy she likes. Hm…who could that be? She tries to smile through the tears, but says that her heart feels like it’s tearing apart. Eun-jo lets out a big sigh, tears forming in her eyes. Is that…empathy? Sympathy? Joy? Perhaps all of the above is the complicated answer.

She calls out to Jung-woo from outside his room and Ki-hoon hears her from around the corner. He frowns, hearing her call for Jung-woo, but it turns out she’s calling Jung-woo to send out his roommate. Ha, the refusal to ever call Ki-hoon directly, let alone by name, is such an interesting quirk of hers.

They end up together…alone…in the woods! Omo! They are speaking words! To each other! If this ends up being a dream sequence I will hurl my beverage at you, Show.

Eun-jo rails into him for “dumping” Hyo-sun at a time like this, when she’s barely hanging on by a thread. She reminds him that he promised to take care of her, to look after her in Eun-jo’s place. She reiterates what she told her mother—the unbelievable goodness of that girl, who would rather have a sister and mother who hate her than have no one at all. “She had only one person in the world. Did that one person have to do that to her?” Ki-hoon listens quietly to her rant, then hurls his pent-up frustration at her.

Ki-hoon: Are you finished? With your over-stepping words? Do I have to accept her? A kid who has never been a woman to me, likes me, so I have to accept her by default? Am I not supposed to have a heart, or a mind? Why? Because I owe a debt to ajusshi? Should I accept her to repay a debt? Is that how you repay YOUR debts, you punk? Enough. Stop it. Do you mean what you said? Hand to heart, is it sincerely what you mean? Is that really what you want to say to me? If I say to you: ‘I was wrong. I’ll accept Hyo-sun.’ Then what will you do? Is that what you want to hear? Honestly? Is that how you really feel?!

Oh my goodness. Who are you and what have you done with Stoic Ki-hoon? Nevermind. Don’t answer. Let us never speak of him again. I feel like…this is gross…but I feel like I’ve been constipated for weeks and weeks….and then finally…the sweet release. Aahhhh.

I think the look on Eun-jo’s face pretty much says it all. But she shouts back: “What are my true feelings?” Ki-hoon: “You know them.” Eun-jo, challenging him: “What?!” Ki-hoon: “You…me…” Oooh, is it MadLibs? Love! Hate! Desire! Tears and Recriminations!

And then? He steps closer. KISS HER! Kiss her!

…And he grabs her wrist. Of course. He pulls her close, saying, “You just try and say those words to me again. If you say those words one more time…I’m up to my neck with the desire to give it all up. ‘Let’s just forget it all. Ajusshi’s grace, my debt, I’ll just throw it all away! All I need is you. If I just had you, I could brazenly forget all my debts…and live.” Ack! Do it! Run away! God, angry Ki-hoon is way hotter than martyr Ki-hoon. He asks her if she really wants him to be with Hyo-sun, tears streaming down his face. Eun-jo finally breaks her barrier and lets a tear fall. It’s tiny, but it’s enough. He grabs her in an embrace. My god, it feels like a century since they’ve had any physical contact.

He holds her tight, both of them crying. He says: “We can’t, Eun-jo ya. It’s already too late. We can’t. I know you don’t understand, but we can’t. I resent it like crazy, but we can’t.” ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? Are you trying to kill me, Show? Because it would be much easier to just cut open a vein. You CAN’T? Why can’t you? You’re standing there holding her right now! Why is it too late? You’re here right now…with the feelings…and the hugging…and the tears! Gah. I may have just snapped. Ladies and gentlemen, your recapper has just snapped. Does not compute. Does not compute. I need a drink.

Okay, I’m back. I may be just the shell of a former recapper, but that’s what happens when the story actually moves backward. Sanity is fragile, people. This show might just be the death of me. Eun-jo breaks away from his embrace, asking him to reconsider Hyo-sun. Really? You too? Was I the only one present for the outpouring of feelings? She adds: “If she gets any sadder, I don’t think I could handle it.” (Meaning the having to take care of her, not like she’d die of empathy or anything.)

The next morning Eun-jo leaves for Japan to do research with the super-special yeast-testing machine. She’s even sweet to Hyo-sun, promising to play with her when she gets back. They watch her go, and when Hyo-sun turns around to look up at Ki-hoon, he’s staring off at Eun-jo. Eun-jo does her own staring off in the car, as she flashes back to the scene we saw not eight minutes ago. Really, Show? Do you think I have the same short-term memory as your characters?

In a moment of much-needed comedy, a gaggle of ajummas come running up to the house searching for Kang-sook. Uh-oh. Auntie Priestess is looking for a smackdown. Don’t underestimate the power of the ajumma gang. She tries to kick Kang-sook out, for her alleged affair (which Hyo-sun’s uncle overheard last episode and spilled to said gang). Kang-sook decides to go with “Prove it!” ha, leading to a hair-pulling, knock-down drag-out fight, complete with broken vases and bleeding lips.

Afterwards, Kang-sook goes straight to the phone to call the other town elders, crying at the top of her lungs about how she was wrong. Nothing if not crafty, this one. She then confronts Hyo-sun’s uncle, challenging him that no one, save her dead husband returning from the grave, can kick her out of this house. She uses Jun-su, sole male heir to Gu Dae-sung, as leverage. And then she kicks him out. Again.

The rice company owner comes by, surprising Hyo-sun and Ki-hoon. He’s come to make sure the delivery arrives, as he’s decided to honor their request. Ki-hoon smiles at Hyo-sun, praising her for single-handedly getting it done. She looks at him quizzically, then tells him to stop it. Finally!

Hyo-sun: Don’t talk so sweetly to me. I’m not very smart, so it really, really confuses me. If I think about it, from the day you came here, till the day you officially rejected me…while you were scolding me for being childish, telling me not to lean on you…you were exactly as sweet to me as you’ve always been. Even if the world crumbles, the feeling that if I held onto you everything would be okay…you did that. You pushed me off the edge of a cliff…and then you’re being sweet to me again—you can’t do that.

Thank you! I might be starting to gain some shred of sanity back. I’ve been waiting forever for someone to stop this boy from confusing her; the fact that it came straight out of the horse’s mouth? Topped my expectations. She really is growing up nicely, and I’m glad that even if his rejection of her didn’t move Ki-hoon and Eun-jo forward (grumble, grumble), at least it’s moving Hyo-sun towards growth and change.

She sends Big Sis a text, and at the same time, she receives an email from Eun-jo. Both sisters have sent word to the other that they have succeeded. Could it be possible we’re moving towards a sister-wavelength? That would be fun to see. She’s sending the results to the lab, and she’s named the yeast “Dae-sung Ssakaro Myesis.” I have no idea what the last two words mean. I’m assuming they’re scientific words, which I’ve just transliterated. But the important part is that she named it after Dae-sung.

She runs into the house, looking for Mom, but then ends up in front of her father’s picture, telling him the good news. She tells him that “unni did it,” and that she named it, not after herself, but after Dad. She cries tears of joy, finally able to say that they accomplished something in her father’s name.

She meets with Dong-soo, chattering away about the news as he types, hardly betraying any interest. She asks if it’s okay that he’s doing yet another piece on Dae-sung Co. for his magazine. Dong-soo replies that it’s not for the magazine; it’s for his blog. He tells her (rather defensively) not to underestimate netizens and the power of the internet. Oh, you don’t have to tell us, Dong-soo.

He brags that his site has more readers than the magazine, throwing his numbers around…Dramabeans tromps all over his little site, but I’m not being petty, really. He sort of talks through her, instead of to her, which Hyo-sun totally notices. This guy is becoming increasingly strange…in a funny way. He was always kind of weird; I guess he’s just getting more screen time. Hyo-sun comes home to witness the power of the internet for herself, as she is greeted with her own little fanclub (ha) complete with bubbles to replicate her commercial.

The machine to recreate the yeast has been sent from Japan, so once Eun-jo comes back they can start manufacturing new makgulli with the new Dae-sung yeast. Meanwhile, Ki-jung is maneuvering to underbid Dae-sung Co. on its Japan deal, to try and win back the buyer that was stolen from Hong Ju.

Jung-woo asks Ki-hoon: “What if I just stabbed you, right now?” Ki-hoon doesn’t seem to care much, asking why he hasn’t yet taken one of many opportunities to do so. “It’s because of Eun-jo, right? Someone’s chubby little kid dongseng (little brother), Han Jung-woo.” Uh, I’d be careful or you might end up with a baseball bat to the head. That might be true for Eun-jo, but it’s not how Jung-woo sees things. Ki-hoon says that it’s the same for him (Isn’t Eun-jo the reason for everything, with these two?), and that once the winery gets over this hump, it doesn’t matter what happens to him. He adds with a smile that if Jung-woo will let him live until then, that’d be nice.

Hyo-sun checks in on Mom, who’s been drinking alone tonight. She sees her vulnerable, for the first time ever, opening up about her sadness and loneliness in the face of Dae-sung’s death. For Hyo-sun to see someone else in her family finally mourning the death of her father—something Eun-jo refused to let her see—it shatters a wall between them.

Mom quotes Dad’s journal entry about her, saying that she read it over and over until she was bleary-eyed. Hyo-sun bravely goes in for the hug. Mom asks wistfully, “Are you that man’s daughter? That stupid man’s daughter? If he was so afraid of life without me, why did he leave me to go on without him?” Hyo-sun reaches for Mom’s hand and puts it on her head, asking her through tears to please call her “my baby” just once. Mom caresses her hair, tears falling, as she complies, giving Hyo-sun the affection she so desperately needs.

Eun-jo returns from Japan, looking much worse for wear, but doesn’t listen to Jung-woo’s protests that they go to the hospital. They arrive at the winery just in time to hear the bad news. Ki-hoon’s just received a call from the Japanese buyer that they’re canceling the machine rental and the makgulli order. And in this drama, as javabeans so aptly noted, when Ki-hoon is on the phone, somebody always collapses. Who will it be this time? Is there anyone left? Eun-jo it is!

Ki-hoon picks her up, pushing Jung-woo out of the way to drive her to the hospital himself. She gets up and tries to argue that she’s fine, eliciting Shouty Ki-hoon to make an appearance. Meanwhile, Hyo-sun calls the Japanese buyer to find out the real story, and goes directly to the competitor who swooped up the deal from under her nose…Hong Ki-jung.

They meet, and Hyo-sun doesn’t get a word in edgewise before Ki-jung cuts her down to size, making her feel young, inexperienced, and naïve. Which, to be fair, are all true of her. He announces that he’s not interested in talking about fair play; he made a bid and won, and that’s that. He was hoping that the older sister would make an appearance—the one researching yeast—because he has something to say to her. But upon discovering that Hyo-sun is the younger sister, he dismisses her soundly.

That night Hyo-sun tells Ki-hoon that it was Hong Ju who snaked their deal. He freaks out and makes a slip: “How did you…find that out?” She asks if he knew too, not suspecting anything. She declares war on Ki-jung and swears to destroy him, prompting an even bigger freakout from Ki-hoon that she went to go meet the Big Bad Wolf himself.

Hyo-sun cleans up in Mom’s room while looking after Jun-su, and discovers Dad’s journals, happy to recognize his writing. Eun-jo and Mom return from the hospital, and Mom asks what Eun-jo thinks if they get kicked out of the house tomorrow. Eun-jo says the deal is more important, and if it fails, they’ll have to pack up anyway. Kang-sook surprisingly doesn’t freak out at this news.

Mom goes into her room to find Hyo-sun surrounded by all of Dad’s journals. Kang-sook looks at her in surprise, as Hyo-sun shakes with resolve, raising her eyes slowly up at her mother. Ooh, scary.

So, let me get this straight, Show. You FINALLY brought Eun-jo and Ki-hoon to an emotionally honest and vulnerable place, and then they decide to stay apart for reasons that make no sense to anyone anymore. And then you FINALLY give Hyo-sun the connection to her mother that she’s been craving for eight friggin years, and then you yank it away with Dad’s words? They were supposed to be words of forgiveness and understanding! So…now we’ve ended the episode exactly where we started. Gah!

Perhaps I am being unnecessarily critical, or particularly plot-mongery this week. But I think I’m just…(borrowing Ki-hoon’s phrase) up to my neck with the swirling circles of going-nowhere-ness. I see shiny moments of what could be…and then they get yanked away, so cruelly.

I really, really hope that Hyo-sun’s Eun-jo-inspired death glare means some significant CHANGE in the episodes to come. And that Ki-jung will start getting involved to really muck things up for our crew. Or dare I say it? I might even welcome CANCER. Seriously. Cancer. Don’t make me wish Cancer on you, Show.

I've been very close to literally banging my head against a wall in frustration over this drama. This episode almost put me there, but then I found some alcohol.

Your recaps are a nice balance of story summary and exasperation, tempered with humor. In my mind I have designated you the voice of reason. So, girlfriday and dramabeans, please don't stop recapping this drama. "One step forward, two steps backward" summarizes exactly how I feel about the story progression.

"What actually moved me more than anything else in that scene was her confession of wanting to kill Jang in his sleep. I could totally picture this drama veering into a horror/revenge plot that would be nine kinds of awesome and far more exciting than what we’re getting now."
Isn't CS supposed to be a story of revenge? Isn't that the tagline? And there's no revenge-like stuff going on. Don't get me wrong, I like the little character insight moments, especially with Hyo-sun and Kang-sook, and the sisterly moments between Eun-jo and Hyo-sun, but if this is a Cinderella story, I want some backstabbing crazy stuff going on.

Yeah, I'm about ready to give up anything ever happening between Eun-jo and Ki-hoon. Seriously, it's episode 14 so if they're in the woods alone, at night, it's about time for some physical contact besides hugging. I guess I can still dream.

I don't want to say CS is going nowhere, but it's only seemed to have one major breakthrough and that was Daesung's death which has had a significant impact on changing the characters. I'm hoping (praying) that with Hyo-sun becoming more capable and realizing that she's always looked down upon, and now with the fact that she found out her precious mother was cheating on Dae-sung and Dae-sung knew it that something is going to happen and I believe Hyo-sun will be the catalyst for it.

I actually like this ep a lot mostly due to the forest scene and the fact I can't get over the fact they finally touched!! See what deprivation does to you! I feel like I was starved for 14 episodes and I was.

Story wise we know the writer is stinking it up BUT the performances are really great and EJ and KH's chemistry is really insane. These people are so tortured but like in real life they are their own worst tormentors. It seems they can't break out of the cycle of what makes them them (the childhood insecurities, fear etc) to move to become happy upstanding citizens of the republic of korea.

My take on the deadly phone calls is this: Daesung and his dad are parallel foils of each other since both are forms of a father figure for him. KH may be able to induce both of them to have a heart attack but his symbolic father dies and gives him forgiveness and his real father doesn't die and just gives him more grief. Or maybe, just maybe he has uncontrollable mutant super powers like an xmen and can kill by transmitting his words over a cellular signal. KH becomes horrified by how much mightier his words are than the sword and he creates a special device to wear over his mouth that he can adjust so his words can have less sting on people's ears, hearts and brains. Years later he can finally be straightforward to people and talk to them one-on-one without being drunk, expressing his wants and desires in letters or dragging by the wrist into the forest for a little tête-à-tête.

Where was my chain of thought? oh yes at the hospital for the 10th time. I thought KH pleading with his dad to come away, live in a cabin, fish and raise his and EJ's bunnies to be so sweet and naive in a mice-and-men-meets-luke-skywalker way and yet so f*cking crazy. Does he not know he is addressing BB from City Hall? This little musing shows at heart who KH is which is a stunted boy. He still needs his dad's love and approval and wants people to do the right idealistic thing when the best thing for him is to divorce himself and run away from the parental toxicity. I'm not sure KH can ever grow to be a real man and finally put actions against his intent without the willingness to cut a few limbs off. So far he has been all words and no delivery ( though I still heart him.)

Anyway, if you view this show like a modern greek tragedy, where people are stuck in paralysis which leads to a domino of family loss and deaths it totally works . If you are viewing this as a typical kdrama with things needing to be resolved, people finding love and happiness blah blah blah-I think your gonna be disappointed and frustrated.

"Aw! Sadly, this is not that drama. Perhaps you are on the wrong channel?"

I've been feeling like that for the past 10 eps...but yet I keep coming back...
good thing I got other dramas to stop me from going nuts.

I pity everyone in this show.. it's like they are just doomed to running around in circles, something happens, but nothing happens.

I also interpreted the "it's too late" as in it's too late for KH to love anyone else (i.e. HS) but EJ... maybe i was hoping for a bit too much? The one thing I really appreciated this ep was HS teling KH to stop confusing her, instead of hanging on and not letting go...otherwise I will really want to strangle you, SHOW.

Thanks Girlfriday for helping me get through this. awesome recaps :)

CS was stated and emphasized as a melodrama beforehand, but somehow while watching CS and reading the reviews till now, i still don't find it as nice as Will it snow on Christmas. It is probably due to the character development. CS's character development is very slow!

I expected EJ to have a gradual character change but until now i still feel EJ didn't change much. As for Hyo Sun, i can feel she has grown up, its refreshing to see her standing up against Ki Hoon, who is once again misleading her. I can understand that he is trying to comfort her, because of EJ's words to treat Hyo Sun better, but doesn't Ki Hoon have common sense that there are so many other ways to support her? Aigoo...

Of course, it would have been nice if they both decided to run away, but honestly, these two have too much baggage. Debt, guilt, responsibilities ..all that jazz. I don't think they would be happy ..I mean, like truly happy. It's just not meant to be. Le sigh. This show can't possibly have a happy ending.

Bwahaha. I was thinking the same thing watching this show. Maybe Eun Jo keeps fainting because she has cancer. Then I was surprised by the surge of hopefulness inspired by the thought. Well if she really wants to die so much...
Yet I'm too far into the drama to stop now. You'll find me in front of the computer making incoherent noises of frustration.

Oh, and Ki Jung? Hot.

Speaking of cancer........is it really sad that when Eun-jo was coughing I was hoping that there would be blood and then.....some fatal disease?

Not that I hate her or anything...but it just seems like the only thing that can FINALLY pull these two together is gonna be cancer. Or, heaven forbid, someone else dying. I just want some progress...some action...some sign that these people are ALIVE with brains that FUNCTION LIKE NORMAL HUMAN BEINGS for crying out loud!

So.Frustrating.

-takes a deep, deep breath-

Thank for the recap =P Always helps me get through all the pain this drama brings me ^__________^

@kdlover

Oh yes! Why didn't Ki Hoon just grab her and kiss!!! I just feel they should have since this is a drama and can relieve our eyes too after all that crying! And I was also watched after PP too! Cos PP just had that touching kiss scene that had fans gone gaga over it. Including me... Haha.

Nevertheless, ratings for CS is still first in korea in the wed/thurs drama slot.

@ 23 J: I agree with you. The following is how I understood what KH said in that scene. (Those who don't understand Korean should know KH says "can't" without a specific subject.)

[I] can't [go to Hyo-sun], Eun-jo ya. It’s already too late. [I] can’t. I know you don’t understand [why I'm only saying this now], but [I] can’t [hold it in any more]. I resent [this whole situation] like crazy, but [I] just can’t [stop loving you / live without you].

I hate this writer but she sure is good at playing with words. Some of these dialogues are so simple, yet they imply so many things.

Here KH is finally confessing he still loves her and there's going to be no one else but her, but EJ can't accept it because of Hyo-sun so she rejects him again. I understand her but it's still frustrating. I hate how this writer uses guilt to torture the main characters. :(

Thanks girlfriday on your recap. You've once again hit the nail on the head!

I'll agree with everyone's comments, mostly.

Just saw the raw ep 15 and was hoping that this would be the time when KH-EJ profess their love for each other - a proper skinship moment - but alas, I was mistaken and they ended up on a worse situatIon I guess.

That's right, a few episodes to go and the plot gets more complicated instead of easing.

Will this be like the real Cinderella story that Cinderella has suffered up until the end, and it's only at the ending that she finally finds happiness with the Prince. I guess with the Cinderella story there were moments that she was happy but with EJ, she has been miserable from the beginning.

I was hoping that the writers would at least give her a break - and yes, I will even accept the walk in the park/ fairground, ice skating, bus ride, going to the movies scenes, which were normally used by korean dramas to show sweetness/ skinship between the leads.

I'll predict another sad Ep 16, as an overflow of Ep 15.

Whatever the outcome, I will continue watching CS. KeepIng my fingers crossed for the remaining episodes.

I feel like I was going round and round in circles watching this episode. Definitely not a good thing.

Hi,

Not sure if anyone else is with me on this part from Ki-Hoon when he said - 'We can't'.

I think he was referring to it's too late to go back to a time when they can let go of each other's feelings. In that throughout the show, they didn't know - but now that they do, it's therefore too late to retract. So they can't go back to that period of being ignorant of their feelings.

I didn't think he mean they can't be together. I think it was an offer of him trying to tell Eun Joo that he's even willing to let it all go and run away (as with her last request).

But definitely what's freaking frustrating is how both of them are not in sync with each other's emotional rollercoastering.

That is a major frustration. We had like so many eps of Eun Joo being all procupiney and Ki Hoon being so totally 'nice' to Hye Sun that it was as if we had the main leads all mixed up.

That said - I totally agree about the Kang Sook and Hye Sun dynamics. It's way too freaking ridiculous for the retraction of emotional outpouring in this manner. Some time to develop that dynamic of being at truce would be great.

Sheesh. This drama is worse than a drug. The stellar acting makes me continue watching. The drama drives me up the wall. To paraphrase Eun Joo - To watch, is pain. Not to watch, it also pains. ARGHS!!!!!!!

What I loved about this episode? The way that (with a little help from makeup of course), Moon did a great job of showing how tired Eun-jo was, not just physically of course, but down right emotionally and mentally (and spiritually?).... and Hyo-suns death glare in the end. Hyo-sun even got the "shaking with anger" thing down.

@girlfriday: You said that Eun-jo wants Ki-hoon to take care of Hyo-sun because otherwise she would be the one to be bothered/stuck with Hyo-sun (or something along those lines). But am I hoping too much to actually think that Eun-jo "cares" about her sister? I know, I know. She realized how similar Hyo-sun was to her father, and wanted to pay her debt to Daesung by caring for Hyo-sun. But in all this craziness of emotions, is it too much to hope that she may have developed some kind of.... feelings?.... actual concern?... awareness?... *insert appropriate word here* for Hyo-sun?

Anyways, what I didn't like (aside from what girlfriday mentioned) about this episode: Ki-hoon "shoving" Jung-woo to the side and telling him to "Move!"... Like I said, the kid feels like a little brother now; no one mess with him.

Also... Is it only me, or does anyone else think Ki-jung is... dare I say it?... HOT? I mean, who else is wondering what would have happened to this drama if Ki-jung was going to be paired with Eun-jo?... Yeah, yeah, whatever.... We'll leave it to the fanfiction authors out there.

Eventhough I am not as frustrated with the drama as you are GF, I can't help thinking that if they had limited the number of episodes to a normal 16 we wouldn't have this problem. It's like the story stalled somehwere during episode 8 or 9, and hasn't moved beyond that.

In a nutshell, I'm bored, but since I get much more bored doing absolutely nothing on Wednesdays and Thrusdays, I'll keep watching this show.

I don't expect a happy ending anymore. I can accept if someone dies, or all die.

Anyway, is it strange if I want Eun Jo ends up with Ki Jung, together they conquer the world of makgulli?

@73, oh I didn't read your comment before I typed mine - but yes, I also think he's hot..or cold but hot? :P anyway.. I also want they end up together, those two strong persons.... Ki Hoon nowadays is just to weak for her.

Thanks girlfriday for the recap.

I think either KH or EJ need to do CPR on either one to let viewers glued their eyes wide !. Looks like their love goes into whimper mode !!.
I am so glad HS told him (KH) off, go girl !!

well I could say I warned you..you could hear the waves of pathos and angst mixed with heavy melodrama coming ages ago, and now you upset that it just keeps coming..frankly I stopped watching as soon as the school years where done, and figured anyone still watching are those that like that sort of thing. If some of the new k-drama have been a hark back to the old comedy/romance days, then this one is most be a hark back to even older times, when the Melodrama and tears dramas where King.

Thanks a lot for the recap!! I've pretty much given up on watchingCS after episode 11 and just read you and JB's recaps.

I don't think I can subject myself to the slow death that is watching this drama.

"Oh my goodness. Who are you and what have you done with Stoic Ki-hoon? Nevermind. Don’t answer. Let us never speak of him again. I feel like…this is gross…but I feel like I’ve been constipated for weeks and weeks….and then finally…the sweet release. Aahhhh."

I'm sorry, but this one really made me laugh.

In every single detail, I agree with you girlfriday!

Finally...as in finally...

Although Episode 15 kinda pissed me off in a way, let's see how it'll go for you and Javabeans :)

Another awesome recap :)

I think Ki Jung should fall in love with Hyo Sun and hence he will change to be a nice guy, then can then combine their wine companies and rule the rice wine world.

Then Ki Hoon and Eun Jo can run away and live a simple life in a village - fishing and what not.

I hope Jung Woo meets another nice baseball fan girl or he becomes a successful baseball player! Yay!

Happy ending!!!

Thank you yet again for another GREAT recap GF! I have actually only watched 4 episodes of CS, but been faithfully reading the recaps as they are so enjoyable!!

As I am not a fan of melodrama, I think I will just stick reading your recaps, and not watching it. The ANGST, crying and frustruation, I don't think I will be able to handle it :D

HAHA! Props for the constipation line! I empathise!~ FULLY!

We should come up with a name for the friggin agony this drama succeeds in placing us through every week :( Agonizing yet something we just can't pull ourselves away from! How about the Cinderella Migraine for starters o.O

I've been reading your recaps WAY ahead of the KBS World showing over here. Gawd the plot is doing this push/pull thing but...but.... I'm already freaking hooked on this! Well done on this epi's recap though, it was hilarious.

Haha loved your recap as usual girlfriday!

I don't get it, isn't it about time SOMETHING happened? I mean, we're 14 episodes in and we're on the final-6 stretch so something HAS TO HAPPEN right. Unless it's all part of the writer's big plan to shock us with a super exciting final 6 (i hope!)

It's frustrating because the biggest plot turning point we're all waiitng for is KH's revelation that he was the big bad guy at first and the writers are giving us pointless episodes just to drag it out to 20 eps. I agree, they should've made it a 16-episode drama. As much as I love CJM and MGY, it's like watching a great show slowly fall apart.

But, even after saying all tht, I'm still watching so I still have hope for the final 6. If it ends badly, which is something too common amongst dramas, I reallly would've really wasted a lot of time -.- Well, I guess I'll just rewatch the first 4 eps over and over again then. Y'know, back when KH smiled, DS was alive, MGY still had her long hair. Haha.

girlfriday...i can't help myself saying this but...YOU HAVE AN AWESOME RECAP HERE! it is more satisfying than the story itself haha.

thank you very much for recaps. and i say in this one, i'm gonna give you an award. 2 thumbs up!

the only thing that made this read-able was your comments about the show. Seriously I wanted to give up the last ep but decided to give the show another chance. Now I really wanna give up.

But a part of me is saying......2 more episodes, just finish it already

@85

there is NO WAY KJ is going to fall for HS. she's too immature for him--evident how he didn't give her the time of day in this ep. she's not mature enough to handle him.. he's gonna eat her up and spit her out and then trample on all her pretty frilly dresses. that's just the HOTNESS vibe i get from KJ. now EJ.. he could totally fall in love with and make beautiful KJ/EJ babies.. and i think Daddy Hong would totally adore--in his own twisted way-- those grandchildren more than KH/EJ babies.

i LOVED this episode's KS/HS interactions.

another great recap, girlfriday!!! thanks!

I still have to watch Ep 15 with English subs?

Was Ep 16 shown already in Korea? For me this is the turning point. Now that everything will be out of the open - that is - will it be?

@ 40 Lahlita: I do very much agree that Eun-jo's most important, and therefore most fragile, issue is Trust. But I don't think it takes any agency away from her, for her to love Ki-hoon, or even kiss him (although this is not that show) under some illusion of who he might be. That's still her choice, and though Ki-hoon is choosing not to act on his feelings because of his Betrayal, I don't think that loving her makes him less righteous, as far as heroes go. It's meant to be a tragic love.

My frustration is that it's neither forbidden nor acted upon...leading to lots of unfulfilled dramatic tension. Don't get me wrong. I'm all about the angst. I'm not looking for flowers and puppies here. I just think that if you're going to go the way of the Big Reveal of Betrayal, then why not act upon the love, to up the angst factor?

Eun-jo's agency is an important issue that you bring up, and I think it's encouraging to see her as the mover and shaker of most things in this story, even if she is a reluctant participant in, well, Life. But I think her choices are very much her own, even if they are saddled with guilt and mommy issues. Ki-hoon's lack of honesty robs her of his love (because he's choosing the route of tortured and honorable, although I would prefer dishonorable and hot), but I don't think it strips her of her agency.

Also, for you and anyone else who's deemed ME the voice of reason...I feel for you and your loved ones. I take no responsibility for the mental health bills you will incur. I assure you they will be hefty.

I totally agree, it's time for some actions
everytime we move one step forward, we are going 3 steps back

there are only 6 ep to come, all the things I was hoping to happen is crushed, cause it won't be possible to do it in 6 ep

if it ends without any kind of progression but an open end , I will seriously be pissed out and commit a murder

so watch out writer, there are alot of fans waiting for a promising ending, don't you dare crush our hearts

@ 94 Girlfriday: Wowzers ... an entire response just for Lahlita? I don't even ... Ima frame this chit!

Reading what you've said, Girlfriday, I agree that Eun-jo's choices are very much her own. In that way, she does have agency as you define it. I totally agree with that, and I am thrilled that this Kdrama recognizes a woman's right and ability to effect the direction of her own life. However, and this may go more into the realm of an irrelevant philosophical inquiry, agency as I learned it is the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices. Eun-jo certainly has the independent bit down, but it's the *free* choice bit that stumps me. Is choice really free choice when you don't have all the information needed to formulate a more encompassing opinion? Is a poker game fair when your opponent has the hidden cards? A lab rat may know of Exit A and Exit B, and choose Exit B, but how much choice is there if the rat doesn't know that there is an Exit C? You can choose your next move, but it's a hollow choice borne of limited options and ignorance. And with that, I'll quit trying -- and failing -- to draw brilliant analogies to illustrate why for me agency is more than just having your choices be your own.

But Eun-jo makes her own choices and loves Ki-hoon under her own power. I'll give you that. I just think Ki-hoon is a dishonest, impotent poopy-head. As you mentioned, "Ki-hoon’s lack of honesty robs her of his love (because he’s choosing the route of tortured and honorable ..." She's robbed, and she has no power over that. He's robbed of her love as well because she has trust issues, mommy issues, Dae-sung issues, Hyo-sun issues. Issues, heavens! Neither can move forwad to a place of healthy love until things are let out on both ends, but I must admit I'm biased toward Eun-jo because Ki-hoon's lies by ommission and his infuriating inconsistency make me rage. Chase her, release her. Hug her, let her go. Beg her to come to you, tell her you're going away. Cry to her you love her and that she's all you need, reprimand her that she can't open people's hearts. What on earth???

Hopefully we'll get some movement going forward. I know thanking you is a broken record, but thanks so much to you and Javabeans, Girlfriday. I try to accept each drama for what it is, without expecting more than it can deliver. What's supremely gratifying is finding a community of intelligent, thoughtful people whose discussions run the gamut from hilarious comments ["am i the only one thinking we should rename this drama 'Yeasty Angst'?" - Moana], to in-depth analysis and witty commentary. You are good job! Thanks again. Looking forward to the recap for Episode 15, and even more to the recap for Episode 16!

Girlfriday, I like your recap, particularly your comments.

Scriptwriter is determined to give us more frustration. Maybe this is the way to induce us to continue to watch the show as we want to see the breakthrough in KH/EJ relationship.

But I guess there is no hope until the very last episode. Scriptwriter, you are so mean!

Girlfriday, I absolutely love your recaps.

I'm so frustrated with this drama too. Seriously it does wear a person down just following it weekly. I can only imagine what it does to its main actors, they seem to be losing lots of energy lately.

Overall, can't help but hang on. I need to know KH and EJ will have a happy ending. Scriptwriter, please be more nice to these two. They deserve some light and happiness, HS too! Ahhh...everyone in here deserve some happiness.
