Union reaches settlement with MBC

After a hairy several days, the union of broadcasting professionals has come to a settlement with MBC. The two sides spent the weekend in some frustrated talks regarding the union strike over unpaid drama wages, and for a brief while they were stuck at an impasse. Thankfully, on September 6 they concluded their negotiations and dramas can now resume filming.

KBS and SBS came to settlements with the union quickly enough to avoid having any of their dramas stopped. MBC took nearly a week longer, as it had much more outstanding payments than the other two stations; its total came to over 2 billion won (about $1.6 million). As a result, three of its dramas encountered production interruptions when its cast members refused to participate in shoots, per the union’s decision.

First was weekend drama Gloria, which stopped filming on September 2. Gloria resumed production on the 3rd after its production came to an agreement over its unpaid wages.

Dong Yi stopped filming on September 3 and was facing the possibility of not having new episodes to air this week, which had a lot of people at MBC sweating. With the conclusion of its strike, they will air new episodes — but just barely.

As of the weekend, Dong Yi hadn’t completed its shoots for the episodes scheduled to air on Monday and Tuesday. Given that they have only just resumed shooting at 11:30 am on Monday (the 6th) for its Monday night broadcast, one can only imagine how hurried the production must be. (In effect, they will have shot these two episodes in half the time they were counting on. Yeesh.)

One source said that despite the extreme time crunch, they are mobilizing “superhuman methods and cutting-edge equipment” to make broadcast hour at 10 pm. They’ll be making use of satellite broadcasting to transmit footage from the set directly to the broadcast station to minimize transit time, where the editor will then work on “real-time editing.” (Eep!)

Weekend drama Kim Suro halted production on September 4 and will resume filming on the 7th. With only three episodes remaining, it’s a relief that they won’t have to go off the air just before its big finish. Playful Kiss was able to avoid stopped production.

The poor Cast? I say the poor editors too. One wrong move on their part, and they'd be getting hate mail for some kind of imperfection or another. ACK! Well, at least people will be getting paid now.... Hopefully.

omg~!! yay..i'm so relieved as a Gloria fan.
the plots n relationships are really coming at interesting points n it would be a shame if it'd be stopped. gah love this drama, never fail to make me smile, cry, squeal n most importantly, root for most of the characters to succeed.
thank you mbc, finally...
n thanks for the news.

Great to see another Gloria fan here! This is the first drama this year that draws me in deeply. I love and feel for all the main characters and it's getting better and better. Gloria fighting!!

i know, rite? i've watched n liked a few other dramas this year, but not nearly as much as i love n addicted to Gloria. the setup n characters are quite the typical old skool kdrama style, but lately there are too many trendy/flashy/quirky dramas that none manage to quite impress me much anymore. Gloria on the other hand, is a low key typical drama with a huge heart. you can esily feel for the characters. n i like it that even the minor characters have their own stories/life. but rite now i'm definitely most excited about Jinjin n her new life after signing the contract. and all the 4 main characters are lovable that i don't mind who end up with who. n Eojin-Jinjoo make a super adorable couple. :)
sorry i spazzed too much. excited to find a fellow fan of this wonderful drama.

Totally agree with every word you said. We have quite a few of trendy enjoyable dramas but Gloria is leading understatemently in the 'heart' department! Love the two lead couples and also the real buddy friendship between DA and JJ, which is so rare between a man and a woman in Kdramas. All side characters and their own storylines really enrich the story. Hope more people will get to see what a good drama it is.

I'm actually not surprised that PK didn't stop production. Neither of the main leads is popular/strong enough as an actor to refuse to stop working; they're just too new to the entertainment (specifically drama) world. Hence, replaceable, if not now, then later. They can't risk angering the very people who brought them into this drama.

Yay, the strike is over.

Now let's get back to watching our favourite dramas.

Thanks to everyone's hard work on both the network and union's sides. I hope the actors don't overwork themselves in order to get the show in the can.

The last thing we need is actors dropping out due to exhaustion.

I hope they pay the hospital bills for the "real-time editor", that person is probably on a steady diet of trucker sized pep pills and pepto bismal.

Glad to see that things are settled and I hope that the big three will take away from this ordeal a proper lesson about paying their employees on a timely fashion.

Unfortunately I don't see them learning a thing from this.

good luck to dong yi and hope they make it on time!! that's got to be horrible...

i anticipate more scenes inside the living quarters, and plenty of talking scenes, instead of more complicated action scenes....
