I was reading that some people thought that the "Kiss" scene at the end of chapter seven was not a "Good" one, but what I really like about that scene was that there was no "Music" to enhance the mood, and the kiss was a good one IMHO, it was done not in the spree of the moment, but Seul even when she was drunk she was still in control of the situation is not like he took advantage of the situation since she kiss him first.
But I must say that I am a bit conflicted about kiss, because some body raise the question of whether it is appropriate to kiss some one while one party is drunk and the other is not.
I guess there is a fine line between taking advantage of somebody while that person is intoxicated, but I do not think that our main lead abuse his power when he kiss the Princess, at least it did not appear that way!!!!!

If they didn't like it silent in 7, it had music at start of 8.
Did anyone comment on their preference?

the silence made way for the "eeek!", the "wheee!" and the "aargh!" in the viewers' heads.

i've watched the kiss scenes so many times now with and w/o music. both works for me! So enchanted w/ this couple, still can't help squeeling with glee each time i see it. hehehe

0

I'd have to agree. :) I also think having the scene be silent helped to keep the viewer focused on the action - reinforced by the extreme close-ups of the leads. Then when they kissed, the camera pulled away, like we were giving them privacy. I thought that was very effective in selling how hot a kiss it was, we can't even look at it too long (though not as hot as the train station one in Coffee House, imho).

That being said, I hate Hae Young this week; no, LOATHE him. Did not know I could have that level of fury at a drama lead. I was completely enraged by his actions, even if I get them, but he made her cry and got her mom to turn against her. That's not cold - that's arctic. I also wished she had clocked him but good, or even nicked him with a carving knife (I'm a bit bloodthirsty, lol). Those little poundings she gave him didn't seem to be enough for the level of harm he inflicted on her. Making me lose my only family? Yeah, even if I stole your fortune, there's no right. I wanted to deck him so bad. I know I will go back to loving him soon, but if I were there...he'd be laid out flat on the ground. Just saying.

and the strings of "OMG!"s...

i thought the silence worked well in that scene. also, given how badly the show has been using their scores so far (e.g. daddy-hit-by-car + light/sweet BGM=WTF ) i was glad they didn't add any music to it.

What I have been reading is people complaining how there is no emotional buildup to the kiss scene, and my face is just like, ....... REALLY?? WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING???

It's been building up since episode 1. It's only appropriate that they kiss now. Because in this moment, Haeyoung, I guess takes advantage of the fact that Seol is drunk, to let go of all the walls he's built up in front of his wall, because he knows it is wrong for him to be showing her his feelings, etc. This is the one moment that Haeyoung lets down his guard and just goes with his feeling. And then you get the beginnings of angst galore, etc.

But really... NO BUILDUP??? Idk, I totally saw it coming.

Required fields are marked *

what really ruined it for me (though not totally) is the lean-to-kiss multiple replay like it's some awesome action sequence. they do that when they flip cars in chases. in this case, I was one the one flippin'. :(

did not like that one, too...much better if they panned out but still up close or like a 360 degree view on the two, how do u call it? but when the camera pulled away to give a full view of the two of them on the stairs...seems like a nice touch.

0

that's called "trying to make the cameraman trip on the stairs." :) just kidding. Yeah, the 360. That would be a good treatment of the scene before the zoom out. You get a good look at the actors' emotions that way. And it is a better way of prolonging the kissing scene rather than the multi-lean-over-replay which makes you wanna scream "kiss already!" than gasping for the suspense.

0

haha! was thinking of the cameraman tripping in the stairs, too, hehe. difficult shot to maneuver, i guess ;-) but that would have made the scene more fluid and not as jarring as how they've done it ;-) blame the stairs, i guess ;-)

0

FIGHTING!!! :D

the kiss, i felt like the build had definitely been there, and in that sense it had been a long time coming (well, as long as you can feel 7 episodes in LOL)--- so i think it really would've happened drunk or not. they were both pretty much gunning for it. ......although you wouldn't have been able to tell, gven how dispassionate it came off looking in the final cut. O_O ..i was like, really? that's the result of your zekshual tenshun?!?! that's IT?!!

I think to me the "Silent" represented the "Calm Before The Storm", specially for our main lead since there was a reason why he took Seul away from the castle, but overall I really like the kiss, I think it fits whit in the chaotic story line of conflicted interest, the ones that want the Monarchy and those who don't!!!

0

Required fields are marked *

ooh, i like the way you read that bit-- the manifestation of their conflicted interest would indeed be mirrored by a random and chaotic insertion of a kiss in the middle of all the hoopla they're currently engaged in (wow, can you tell i'm drafting my thesis. what's with the academic jargon, huh?well-- i think "hoopla" balanced it out nicely LOL)

Agreed. Not since Jang Nara have seen an actress give us a "Bright Girl" so full-bodied.

My Princess is the show Secret Garden could have been, if the latter wasn't so satisfied with its own star power.

Hello everyone!
It is so nice and cozy here on the thread.

I have a K-drama clothes question.

Why why why do they go to bed fully clothed, jeweled and hair still up?

Am I supposed to believe that they have not completely ruined their $3000. suit, gouged their scalps from the hair pins, and awoke with imprints on their necks from diamond
earrings and necklaces?

Is it because we cannot even imagine them with their clothes off for one second before putting pjs on? Is it because there just isn't anywhere for them to change?
Why can't we see them walking into another room with clothes on and then a quick cut to them in PJs crawling into bed?
I started of list of drams that this happend in, but gave up, since it is in every single one...

Hello all,
I've only started posting in the recaps for SG and MP recently, but as my kdrama addiction is escalating it's been great to come here and learn I'm not the only one who is afflicted : )

As for the pyjamas: I think it was only in The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry where I spotted a main character wearing PJs. Can't think of any other instances.

MNKSS. Sam Soon wears pajamas a lot. But she's, y'know, Sam Soonish. :) I can't think of a scene where Sam Shik wears pjs though. Actually let's not talk about Hyun Bin's wardrobe in that drama. I'm currently rewatching it, and as much as I love the show, OMG his outfits are so cringeworthy.

That's one thing about Kdrama: it's the male leads who are more likely to look back at themselves in five years time and think, 'was I conscious when I agreed to wear that?'

Required fields are marked *

So true. Although I was pretty close to poking my eyes out at some of Mae Ri's outfits in MSOAN.

0

Didn't the contemporary audience LOVE his style?

Although, with all that flourescent stuff, we did see a hint of things to come for Joo Won.

0

Required fields are marked *

Probably, but that's kind of my point: the clothes all seem achingly contemporary and will date quickly.

Then again, I am more bothered by the hundreds of innocent rodents they had to butcher to dress the cast of SG.

0

WIN!

But I'm more upset with the "Strangled by the Red String" trope in most kdramas. Basically, you have two pretty people together who have NOTHING in common, except for their "love" or whatever for each other. Ok. But what do they talk about when they're not talking about their opposing parents? What?

0

Required fields are marked *

How pretty they are, of course. I'm starting to learn this from MP.

0

Required fields are marked *

What bothers me about this is that during shipping wars, people start bringing up the whole, "they are too similar" crap like that's a bad thing. Of course, you don't want a clone but surely someone with similar interests or sensibilities or even backgrounds is not a bad thing at all. In fact, it's often the key to a successful relationship.

Being similar is good for a relationship in real life, for sure, but it sure makes for a boring drama. ;)

hello, ladies and (very few) gentlemen! (any gentlemen hiding out there?:P )

happy happy friday. although i'm stuck at home writing a draft of my thesis, i still sneak in a little time to indulge my (latest) falling prey to the Second Lead Syndrome (AGAIN!) !!!!!

i love you, Jungwoo!!! even with your Indiana-jones-in-the-city outfits.... all i need is your smile, and my day is totally made!!! :D :D :D

apart from you, however, i must admit, im liking the seol-HY pairing, because i think none of them think it can actually work out, and it makes them very cavalier about revealing their true feelings. like a really twisted version of doing whatever the hell you want because there will be no real-world consequences for your actions. DUN DUN DUN-- can you believe He Young actually TOLD Seol that he was one of the things she was giving up by being a princess? it's so tantamount to actually saying, "you have me. that's not the issue here. YES i like you, and you like me, I KNOW. "!!!! oh, the angst! that line kills me!
i can't wait until they figure out that it CAN happen, and THEN i'm so totally there for the ensuing passive aggressive courtship. ....well, i think that's pretty much where we are now, eh? :P

also-- my heart's kind of confused about rooting for Hyemi-Jingook or Hyemi-Samdong, but i know one thing for sure---- SUSHI AND CHIPMUNK FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
i wonder how her confession will go next week?!?! can't waaaait! is it next week yet??

and REALLY REALLY OT-- but did anyone catch the latest epi of Bones??? THAT LAST LOOK OF BOOTH TO BRENNAN KILLED ME!!!!!! AAAH!!! <3 <3 <3 knew it! .....the days of B<3B are upon us!!!! :D

Too much Hannah recently.... but that last look does soothe me quite a bit.. it's like the writer make her looks so nice to make the viewer like her but it's just make it looks like to a fake personality... Argh! Why are they so afraid to make B&B a couple? So many things to write about :(

0

Required fields are marked *

I actually like Hannah but I can't understand why Booth would date her and vice versa. There is no chemistry between them.

the Bones x Booth thing is like a catch-22 for me. I'm super frustrated that they're not together, but once they get together, there's no longer the sizzle of being-close-but-not-close-enough. There was this really popular show in the 1980s -Moonlighting- with the will-they-won't-they sexual tension and after the characters consummated their relationship, popularity declined.

Anyways, the HY and Seol pairing does remind me a bit of Booth and Bones. Both make great lovers (when we get them there), but both will also make great friends and it's that extra layer that makes me like the Seol x HY pairing (though I'm pissed at HY this week

Jung-woo makes me smile like moron and act just like Seol when she's crushing on him.

Yes! I can't take side either when it comes to HM-JG or HM-SD pairing. All signs kinda point towards HM-JG pairing, what with the childhood memories, deeper connection, and it seems that HM will fall for JG in episode 8. And usually, when the main girl falls, she falls HARD & could nvr seems to have a change of heart Buuuttt I still can't watch a heartbroken SD. Can we just clone HM to keep those two boys happy??

Oh, and yeasss to CHIPMUNK & PHIL SOOK!! =D

Hi, I'm knew to the thread, and only k-drama addict for a few months, but its really hit me hard...I've been reading the thread for awhile, though (longtime fan, first time caller-well almost)...ANYWAY, I've been having an argument w/ my housemate regarding the Booth, Brennan, Hannah relationship for awhile. I really like Hannah, and I think the story needs a slow Brennan-Booth rebuild...because of her, but also to keep the story going, since when they get together there will be no more FBI partnership and ipso facto no more show, which would be...bad. For me anyway...

As to Hye-mi: that girl is clueless. Sushi-Chipmunk fighting, though. I particularly want her to win lots, and find a spine. Same for SD and JS--but they are all in high school, so they really just need to survive w/o horrendous scars and solid friendships, that would make me so happy.

Me too! I got frustrated and quit at the beginning of the third season. That's one of the negatives about the long-running american tv shows, they have to keep the main couple apart until the end (usually) and they don't know when that will be, so they keep dragging it on, introducing more obstacles/rivals/issues, until finally you're wondering what on earth brought them together in the first place.

That's one of the reasons I prefer kdramas :)

I think more than beaten down, she's easily influenced, escpecially when she's feeling vulnerable. She is a follower, so when she lost Hye-mi as a compass she turned to her teacher, who advised her basically that she has to become a ruthless bitch to survive. Not... the best advice to give a teenager.

I hope she grows a backbone and does something to redeem herself, even if her friendship with Hye-mi is unsalvageable.

@Izzie

Yes, you are right about the antidote to combat the Second Lead Syndrome not going commercial. Initially, we projected enormous returns, but our finance department underestimated the fervency of the fangirls, especially those affected by the JSV or Jae Shin Virus. *carefully Does Not look at Izzie*

They absolutely refused to take their meds, and almost rioted. Who am I kidding? Forget almost, the rioted full scale. Mothers and ahjumas, halmonims and young girls took to the streets, to demonstrate. They refused to go to work or school, and there were fights over conflicting claims of "Mine."

With civilization on the brink of collapse, we regretfuly had to pull our product from the market. *sigh* And we spent so much money on R&D too. :(

Happy Friday Beanie Family! Oh man, all I have to do is survive 6 hours of work today. *sigh* At least it's not a full day. Anyways, haven't started watching any of the 2011 dramas yet, although Dream High is definitely on my to watch list, for now the recaps will do until I'm ready to sit down and have a full on marathon. I might follow Paradise Ranch if there won't be any further recaps because I need to know about those darn kids and whatever the hell happened that caused them to split.

Anyways, I've really gotten myself into trouble with Qualifications of a Man (Q of Men?) because I got hooked and I'm trying not to watch all the episodes I can get my hands on in one go. Like any variety show, it takes getting used to. Once you do, you fall in love with the cast and their oddities. HAHAHA. Sometimes you get tired with how repetitive some episodes are because sometimes you hear the same thing (as in the Choir/Harmony and the Band mission). But in the end, you laugh, you cheer them on, and you even cry for the ups and downs, and the sad goodbyes. Hopefully, With JJ down with Runaway: Plan B, we can see more from him and hopefully he will have a chance to really develop a character for the show, especially since they are one man down (let that be a lesson kids, drugs will ruin you). I will be catching up with Strong Heart soon enough because I hear it is really good, but right now I'm way behind on 1N2D, and it's sad that that show too lost one cast and has had (or will?) have to say good bye to another one of their own. Why is it I've become more of a variety show addict than a drama addict? Because Running Man is also another one I enjoy (thank you isubs for your hard work) and I can't wait until episode 26 is subbed, when they go to manhwa land and dress up. Soooooo cute with Bo Kyung as guest.

Well, off to work. Take care dear Beanies. HWAITING jb and fri!

And, yes, I will bring up THE. HEAD. TILT. thing that SSH does to emote, which he did all the time especially in East of Eden, anger and frustration scenes. Yeah. Hate it. Still hate it.

Also, since you reminded me of East of Eden yet again, I am STILL flaming PISSED how they threw away Lee Dahae, this PERFECT PLOT PIECE AND CHARACTER to give way to the STUPID love story between SSH and Lee Yeonhee that I thought was childish bla bla bla I HATED IT.

As a relatively new kdrama fan, I have to ask: Is Korean society *really* so extremely prudish when it comes to nakedness, kissing, touching and sex?

Kdramas seem to suggest that a couple is expected to barely hold hands until they're safely married. Sometimes couples that have been together for years seem to do nothing more than give each other a quick peck on the cheek from time to time.

And nakedness is evidently such a huge thing, almost like Victorian England; even divorced women are shocked at seeing a guy's bare chest, or even shoulder - even her own boyfriend's!

Someone who asks for a kiss is immediatelycalled a pervert... in fact pretty much everyone is called a pervert unless they are completely sexless.

Drama convention or actual social ideal??

I don't know about korea. But Yes, parents have a lot of say in marriage in Asian Society. Religion, Social Status, Education Background............. the list goes on. And if you are not married by late 20's... "sigh"

P.S I would never choose a guy over my family either. It is considered bad luck.

Actually, they kinda do. I can't speak for Korea or other Asian countries outside of India, but there are countries in which this is common. Marriage is a family affair for a lot of people (I'm not saying all), and arranged marriages are not out of the norm either. Also, in India, being a widow (or divorced) basically means you're a widow for life, especially if you've been married for quite sometime. There are definitely exceptions, and things are changing, but its still "taboo" to have more than one marriage.

I think these TV shows do not represent real life in K.
These things happen in most "classic" romance.

What I mean by that is there are certain rules you have to follow in order to maintain the interest and keep the audience.

Did you know that the Rules of Romance include
1..The first man the heroine meets is the one she ends up with.
2..No kissing until the last page.

I love to use The Office as an example of why Rules of Romance exist. When Jim and Pam were NOT a couple, the show was at its best. When they fell in love and everyone knew, I lost interest.

ummm it depends on the cultures of each country or even state really....I'm Indian and we do share the same 'ideals' as the korean...maybe even stricter....its just that everyone from our culture sticks to it...and religiously follows these ideals... so when ur born into and brought up in such a situation where 'skinship'[as they call it in korea] is minimal...you tend to follow it as well.

When your from a more western culture.....you might find it odd and even irritating that it takes so LONG to move forward in a relationship....but thats just how it is.....its a big step for us...when it might be even irrelevant to you'll.
Eg Holding hands!

Kdramas are heavily "censored" by the Korean government. Note the current government policy of promoting birthrates, so it seems that every woman of child-bearing age is now getting pregnant on kdramas. To get a more realistic view of korean society, please watch korean movies which are not nearly as censored.

The last K-movie I watched was Kiss Me Kill Me. Can I just pretend that SamSoon and My Princess are the reality, rather than that?

0

Required fields are marked *

First of all, someone mentioned Korean censorship. That is definitely very very strong here, so very little skinship is seen on TV at all. But I don't think the barely hold hands thing is valid anymore, I feel? That's a little extreme.. and I haven't seen dramas imply things like that for a while.....

Second of all, Asian culture is very conservative in nature. You need to understand that this conservative culture has been put in place by Confucian values, etc.

Yes, families put great thought into marriage. In Asian culture, the family is everything. That is why a lot of couples ultimately do not stand in the face of opposing families, because that is just an Asian value or a Confucian value. The divorcee or widow is because it represents that the woman isn't pure - I know, it is rather chauvenistic, but also I feel like in China, being a divorcee or a widow, especially with a child, means that the man himself will not be able to have his own child, you know?

Anyway I'm sort of having a brain fart today so nothing's coming out very coherently today. But this is some of the reason behind this. Asian culture is heavily rooted in Confucian values and that is not going to change even with modernization, etc.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Although, that rule only applies to the main couple in their relationship with each other. It seems that in many dramas (not just Asian dramas) the male is often enjoying a steady stream of women until he meets the lead female, with whom he proceeds with caution. And, of course, he always had a sexual relationship with the ex who he pines over.
I can't speak to the social convention of it, but dramatically speaking there's no tension when everyone gets what they want right away.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

"...there’s no tension when everyone gets what they want right away."

that's why it is called tension :-) there is a source of stress or sign of struggle...without which there is no drama, anticipation, excitement, reason for being, goal, etc...

if everyone got what they wanted at first episode, then there is no more story to tell.

i remember the quintessential romance novel, pride and prejudice, our lovely liz and brooding darcy...they got to 'fess up only towards the end and they did not even get to kiss (in the latest film adaptation starring hunk matthew and sexy kiera, the kiss was even added only in the US version of the film only as an afterthought ;-)

but this story stood through the test of time, became the yardstick by which all other rom novels are measured and darcy, well he became female-dom's ideal man :-) .

which brings us back to the tension. i think that's why kdramas are hugely popular now. the moment they go the western way of easy-to-get, quick-fix solutions to life...then it would be downhill for them, too.

same applies in real life, i guess. we tire easily on things we did not take much effort to attain or build. beautiful things especially relationships take some time to unfold....we love the waiting time, yeah! :-)

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

"if everyone got what they wanted at first episode, then there is no more story to tell."
-that's what I was trying to say, but not as well. :) I was pointing out that the tension is the story.

The tension is what I like about K-dramas. Some of the (in dramas at least) social conventions mirror P&P era England, and so the stories play out the same. Those "rules" are needed to keep the tension. There's of course the internal conflict keeping a couple apart (where they hate each other, or think they do) and the external conflict, like parental opposition, socioeconomic disparity (the rich can't marry the poor), meddling exes, etc. In a 16+ episode drama, you need a healthy mix of those factors. So.....wait, what am I talking about now?

oh, and LOVED Matthew MacFadyan as Darcy, but I always skip the kiss at the end. A post-tension kiss is sort of wasteful. Plus, I don't like to think of MM kissing anyone else.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

The tension is THE story. I'd say a definite YES on that.

Even in real life, we need a good amount of stress, the good kind, which is called EUSTRESS. This is when we aim for a goal and stretch our hearts, minds and bodies to its very limits to attain that goal, like in our work, in sports, or academics, or maybe searching and discovering something that would be beneficial to ppl or the society. The bad kind of stress is called DISTRESS. This is when there is depression, loss of hope, too much stress resulting to breakdown of mental, emotional and physical functions. In kdrama, a healthy dose of makjang with positive response from the lead actors is great and necessary. But too much negative, where everyone is just crying their hearts out at every turn and for no good reason and no solution is in sight, is just plain distressing. We dont need the drama if it will not make the characters a better person in the end. Redeeming value is important to legitimize the extent of the heavy drama that we can tolerate, hehe. In most kdramas I find that there is heart and soul...healthy eustress I would consider. In many western tv or films, this is already lacking. Just technology sometimes and fluff that is not healthy at all, like too much sex, no rules and pluralism. sad.

P&P stood the test of time because the rules are still there, as you mentioned. the sensibilities are intact. human dignity is given importance.

and yes, i love Matthew, too. ;-) agree, the kiss is not necessary. the one in my imagination was way way better, haha!

0

I'm sure it's just kdrama conventions and partly because the broadcast stations do try to push some social agenda on how people should *ideally* be like, especially in romantic comedies that may be watched by younger people. But then how else are actresses/wives of actors able to get pregnant before they even walk down the aisle?

korean movies are a whole other thing. I am positive I saw an actor's naked white butt before in a korean movie.

The one things that's been bothering me a lot about Dream High is why are they freezing the actors?
Is not one else distracted by how you can always see their breath? I know they may be shooting in an open set, but it makes it less believable when you can see the breaths of students supposedly in an expensive indoor school.
You'd think that with all these pop idols and movie stars involved, they'd at least bother to construct an indoor set or set up some heaters, etc.

If heaters are too noisy they should bring in radiant ones that don't have fans. Or those braziers that they have at outdoor weddings. I find the icy breaths disturbing too, to the point I can't concentrate on what's actually happening in the drama - I just start worrying about the actors!

I worry about them too, especially when their breath-clouds get huge. It was below freezing in the city where I live this week that I was wearing 2 layers of everything underneath my huge puffy coat and some of my breath clouds were as big as some of the actors. And omg, those girls are wearing skirts! I wonder how the heating system works in South Korea. My school is perfectly able to stay reasonably warm without loud radiator fan noises.

I wonder if some actors deliberately lose weight before shooting a winter drama so they can wear 2 layers of clothing without looking bulky.

I think these two episodes will be more like the special episode. I am just hoping they show more NG's, some scenes on the dinner party, and hopefully the whole SG teams reunites to give us more insights of what happened during shooting.

I heard something funny this morning, apparently the calcium pill "Oskal 500D" rose to popularity and saw sales increase thanks to being mentioned a couple of times on the drama. Compare to other companies which paid stagering amounts of money to have an ad slot, they did not spend a single penny on Product Placement and just got lucky, and this I find funny for some reason.

I love everything about Dream High! I adore the beautiful cinematography (the atmospheric mood lighting style really draws me in), the realistic dialogues, the adorably flawed characters, the tight pacing, the energy, the cohesive intelligent writing, the OST and most of all the beautiful insight to the human condition.

When this drama ends there will still be one question that will resonate within you-" what is your dream?" It is Dream High's ability to throw back that question to a wide spectrum and types of viewers that makes it so unforgettable and successful in terms of impact. It may be a drama about high school idol wannabes but it transcends the teenybopper market. Haven't seen a drama as inspiring as Dream High for a long, long time.
It makes You are Beautiful look like kindergarten.

That's what I've been wondering about, and what has stopped me from giving this drama a go. Glee is about as much teenage angst as I can handle right now.

I'm currently keeping up with Dream High, My Princess and Paradise Ranch (though I'm still trying to bring myself to watch the second ep after the just so-so start).

And I think I'm addicted to Dream High. Why why why did they have to show the preview for Episode 8 at the end of Episode 7, it's just making me more anxious for it. I'm re-watching clips of the performances from Episode 7, to hopefully successfully keep me from going insane (LOVE THE PIL-SOOK/JASON/JIN-GOOK/BAEKHEE ONE).

ep 7. he wants to have her as simple girl instead of being princess. because of her he lost his father and fortune. But they do have feeling for each other
is that why he said to her that let go being pricess
and come back with her family and to him??????

I understood it as HIS issue of wanting her to stop and MAYBE she would be with him. He has never really had her.

The words kinduv slipped out against his will.

Which is why Seul was so shocked after he said it, and he had to do the door lean.

door lean [n. compound] A Kdrama phenomenon which occurs after the lead character admits a supressed truth. The force of the words leaving the body drives the hero back, and he is unable to support himself without the aid of a sold surface.

Cool! Im amazed with how the Korean wave has reached out far and wide in all parts of the world. Not surprising though. Been to Korea and had a glimpse of their culture and history. It's steeped in sacrifice and love for their country -- that's why their stories have depth of character, heart and soul... even the fluffy, sweet varieties like MP. You can always get something you can chew your teeth on.

Happy Friday~~~!

I checked out New Gisaeng Story on a whim the other day.. It's interesting, but a bit slow and a bit odd and I really don't know how I feel about it.

Oddly, I'm already completely on board with the main couple even though they've barely interacted and the guy's kind of an ass (but so very pretty) and I can't stop staring at the main girl's plastic nose. And the extreme number of rookie actors is completely throwing me off because I'm so used to recognizing people left and right. (There are a few people I recognize, like Dae-woong's friend from MGIAG and Yeohwa's father from King Geunchogo.)

There's some makjang nonsense already -- one of the girls has THREE mothers and only knows about one, and the main couple are from polar opposite ends of the class spectrum -- that might get annoying, but I plan on continuing to watch at least into this coming weekend. I dunno how long it'll hold my attention, though.

Whut? I'm not the only one on the planet watching this? Niceness.

I'm liking the show, I'm liking it a lot, but not loving it.

I'm on-board with the couple too. I feel they have chemistry together and adored their little bonding scene over 'Andre'.
I'm actually surprised as to how much I like the actor Sung Hoon. I do see the little nuances and a sensitivity and boy-next-doorness, which oh so subtly sets him apart from evvvery chaebol-type in every Daily-Weekend drama, everrr!

And it's so old-fashioned! The hairpin! Awwww! And he sighed! *clutches heart and dies a little*
I'm also unable to forget the score that plays in the scene he first sees her.
But the moment he veers Kim Min-joon-wards I'm checking out.

I think the veteran actors are great! But a little pissed off that Im Hyuk is playing an... well, Idiot. But maybe I'll grow to love him as I did in other roles.

Also strangely looking forward to Sa-ran meeting mother #3, the head cook.

What did you think of the voulez-voulez chick? Her perpetually glum face is so weird, considering what she gets up to, but she's weird in a totally good way.

Aww, Kim Ho-chang?! <3
He'll always remain Taejunaaah to me, aka. the guy Song Joong-ki kissed -- right on the lips. (O, I haz video evidence.)

Y'know, I say I don't know how I feel about it, but I've been rewatching scenes all day, and visiting the Soompi thread, and the official site, and watching the trailer again, and editing subs so my buddy xiaoSxin can watch it, and I typed up this long-ish post.. Obviously I like it much more than I'd thought. XD

I like Sung Hoon too, he's pretty. (I'm shallow haha.) I literally squeed myself into a puddle when he was fantasizing about getting Saran's number on the ski slope. He's so suave in his head, it's adorable. And when he and Saran were unable to sleep because they were thinking about each other it was SO CUTE. Also, his hate-hate relationship with poor Andre.. XD

Also! At the sogaeting, she put that barrette on the table because she KNEW Damo would recognize it, and he KNEW she knew he would. And the speed with which he grabbed it is basically proof that he's interested, so even though the girls played dirty and set him up with Rara, both he and Saran know the other is at least a little interested. (And the mild flirting during the drinking game was adorable.)

I foresee conflict coming with Damo's doctor friend though, the one who likes Saran. And obviously Rara's gonna be a brat 'cause she wants Damo and, well, is a brat.

One thing I really wanna know is what the deal is with Mom 3. Moms 1 and 2 I get, but how does Mom 3 fit in? Is she the real birth mother who gave her baby up, and then Mom 2 gave the baby to Mom 1? Was she a surrogate who got unusually attached? Was she Dad 's mistress and gave up her baby to him, only to have him give it to his brother? Then why does Mom 2 care? WHAT IS GOING ON?

And I dunno if it's just me, but I've been giggling like a loon at everyone's names. Damo = the drama with HJW; Saran = Saran Wrap; Rara = lalala~ ♪; Gongjoo = princess; Cha Rari (Rara's mom) = that line from Tim's song 그대여 ("웃는 것 조차 힘든 날엔 차라리 소리 내 울어요")..

Voulez-voulez? I don't speak French, I have no idea who you're talking about. D: Do you mean Gong-joo, Saran's stepsister? i.e. the girl from the opening scene in ep 1? She seems quirky, I kinda like her. If nothing else she'll be an interesting character.

Yesssss, Kim Ho-chang. He's a cutie, I love his huge grin. ♥

Oh I concur. You kow what it is? It's got its set of negatives, but on the whole it's SO alluring. I'm wanting moar! Moar Damo!
Did I forget to mention the part about him being lethally pretty? D'oh! Yeah, he makes me giddy.
Yes! Her sneaky way of flirting.
The writer seems to know what she's doing with the OTP. Saran has kind of got all the makings of a gisaeng (since we know the drama's headed there anyway) and that means she also knows how to lure in the men in her own subtle ways. (Bringin' the boys to the yard!)

I feel bad for the doctor, he seems like such a nice guy. Rara seems a harmless brat now but yeah I can totally see her throwing bitchfits over Damo in future.

Yes, that's the girl, the one in the opening scene, ditto!
The characters are all a bit underdeveloped yet but yeah, let's buckle up, it's a looooooooong ride.

Required fields are marked *

Lethally pretty indeed. I've been calling him Pretty Boy when I spazz about it on twitter (I'm notorious for my running commentaries when I'm watching dramas haha). I'm excited for him and Saran to interact together more.

Rara, though, is totally gonna be a bitch later, she's so self-absorbed. Like the way she dragged all the other girls away from the resort when her filling fell out, not even letting them eat first because she couldn't eat. And the way she jealously asked one of the girls if Saran was pretty after that one gisaeng lady gave Saran her card, as if it had never occurred to her that any of her friends could be considered pretty. I like her now, but I know she's going to be horribly loathsome later.

But I love all the girls in the group. Saran's lovely (even with her plastic nose) and has a quiet calm that balances out her friends; Rara's a brat, but she's kind of funny for now; Ahmi seems down-to-earth and reminds me of Moon Chae-won; and the fourth girl (Joo-ah? Can't remember her name and I'm too lazy to look it up) is a kinda spunky and good-humored. And then of course I love the boys, they're adorbs. ♥

I'm not familiar with the writer (looked her up, and I've never seen any of her previous dramas), but the Soompi talk is that all her leading ladies are like Saran, poor-yet-dignified and preternaturally gorgeous, and her leading men are manly in every sense of the word. That could get old fast, but I feel like it would work well in this modern-day gisaeng world she's created.

And yeah, her characters are underdeveloped right now, but I can forgive that since we have 50 eps or so to go. But if I don't get some more characterization in the next few eps I'm gonna be annoyed.

In the meantime, yayyyyyyyy for a new episode tomorrow! The good thing about starting it so late in the week is that I don't have to wait long for my next fix haha.

0

Aaaargh! There are two many characters to remember let alone make a note of their names hehe!
But did you say Rara's mother's called Rari? OMO!
The whiny annoying one?

You were right about the plot being slow, if they continue at this pace it'll become excruuuutiating.

I've not watched any of Im Soo-han's dramas either but she appears to be well-known and liked, and like you say recycling the same characters. But I'm definitely with you on how well the characters fit the gisaeng theme.
I also like Damo, he's a chaebol, juust a bit arrogant but one who DOESN'T have issues for once. So the family's a bit abnormal, like his sibling rivalry against a dog but there's no birth secret, the daddy issues are relatively harmless, his mother isn't a wailing banshee... oh we know he WILL have issues, but all those will come later.

Anyways... yay for new episodes! The ones that will likely make or break whatever love I have for the show...

0

I made a point to remember the girls, since I'm sure they'll be showing up later. The only boys I remember are Damo (apparently named after a singer, which explains that joke Saran made about his name that I didn't get) and Oh Jin-am, the doctor who likes Saran.

Yeah, Rari. Not the whiny one, the classier one, the one Rara actually calls Mom. XD

I'm super excited, actually.. This is what happens when I allow myself to obsess. ><

@19 Alex

Hello and welcome to open thread! As an avid re-reader of Dramabeans posts (it's all so interesting!!), she had discussed the appearance of more sex in the media in this post:

http://www.dramabeans.com/2007/08/the-sex-and-the-city-effect/

I think there are quite a few dramas that don't treat sex as such a big deal, you just have to look for them. The article mentions Coffee Prince, Romance Hunter and Hyena. Of those I've only watched CP and I have to say it was handled very tastefully in that series. It just seemed like a natural progression between Eun Chan and Han Gyul. The skinship between the older couple, in the sense that their relationship was in the more mature stages, was very befitting for them at that stage.

Also, thank you for the friendly welcome. :-)

I have seen some dramas in which sex wasn't such a big deal (Kim Sam Soon, Soulmate - though I've only seen some eps of it -, and Dal Ja's Spring).

Lately, there have just been so many odd attacks of "OMG I inadvertently saw a guy's naked shoulder OMG OMG I am shocked!!!" and "how can I get her to (gasp!) touch my hand without seeming like a pervert?" and "we've been a couple for months but if he tries to kiss me I act shocked and call him a pervert".

Initially I just thought the occasional odd prudishness was a kdrama convention, or played for laughs. I guess that's what it is, mostly. :-)

Hi! Happy Friday! I return to school on Monday. Im excited but at the same time, vacations are over. Less k-drama time. I’m going to be almost all day in school. The good part is that I have a laptop and my school gives me free internet (yay!), and in my free time I can catch up with kdramas, Dramabeans…and homework (believe me, there will be free time, is the way I made my schedule).

Hey Javabeans, this are old news, old old news, but I just discover that Playful Kiss had special episodes. I was watching a clip from Dream High (ok,ok, I was watching the Genie clip for the tenth time) and I don’t know how I ended on a fanvid about the specials. I didn’t watch Playful Kiss, I just read the recaps. The reason why mention it it’s because in one of them he is using the messy perm again! I also think that he looks better with the perm. The perm is a little less messy, but messy at the end. Maybe you already watched it, but just a comment.

Happy weekend!

I finished It's OK Daddy's Girl, and it was LOVELY!!!! True,it's more of a family drama, but it was heartwarming and I like how the main characters are smart and kind and realistic and have common sense.

I finished Secret Garden too...I read the recaps of te finale before actually watching it, but that didn't take away from the experience. Although I don't fully like Ra Im, I did like practically everything else. Loved Oska, Taesun, Seul, and of course JooWon!

As for My Princes it is perfect! I love my romantic comedies (as attested by the fact that I've seen My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Personal Taste, Oh My Lady! , The Man Who Wouldn't Marry, You're Beautiful, etc. etc.)
and this drama fits the bill. Cute couple, nice plot, mostly sunny, but a bit of drama. the acting is actually pretty solid, and I'm sooo gonna keep watching this drama.

As for Dream High, a busy week has kept me from watching it, but drama marathon weekend starts now, and I'm definitely catching up on all the episodes. The drama did NOT appeal to me at first, because it was idol-filled and high-school-themed, but after reading the recaps, I might be missing out on something....

My last day in Europe, the last night in Paris.
It has been a great experience, since this is my first time visiting Europe.
Definitely will come back sometime in the future, and explore more! I want to go to UK, Germany, Netherlands, etc!

Okay. Feeling rather drained. Nice for it to be the weekend. Alas!

Anyone watching Taisetsu na whatever oshiete kureta subete bla bla I am mixing all the Japanese together because the title is so freaking long. I have suspicions that psychotic/bipolar girl could be.... a man who had a sex change?! I seriously doubt Shuuji and psychotic girl did anything. And on second thought what if this was all a plot with his brother, the one who spitefully ripped up the wedding invitation?

Onto cheerier things... where are the Chinese wuxia girls? I remember there were some here... :( I started rewatching Count of Mt. Deer (Lu Ding Ji), the 1998 version, for probably the fifth time in my life. Yeah. Still brings me LOLs to this day... LOL.

ALSO. Finally. Australian Open. Sad that Nadal was injured during the game, but totally respect that he played through the entire game (I WAS ROOTING FOR HIM TO WIN!!!). Also... Federer, why did you lose. WHY.

FRUSTRATION. Thank god it's Friday.

You calling for me? Chinese wuxia girls. LOL. That's a nice way of putting it - rather than ockoala and mookie span the hell out of OT for 2 months last year spazzing about wuxia dramas.

You're watching the Jordan Chan version of DoMD? Not my favorite. At all.

I'm 100% a 1984 DoMD fangirl - still the best adaptation of a Louis Cha wuxia novel I have ever seen.

Young Tony Leung and Young Andy Lau created the first ever bromance on network television. Every bromance on any drama since then have to bow three times to these two guys.

Wei Xiao Bao had seven wives because he could not be with his true love - Emperor Kangxi. That is my story and I'm sticking to it.

Sometimes when I watch DoMD, I get this urge to pee, because I'm laughing too hard. Ah, good times. :-D

Both men at their utmost youthful peak. Before the hit their middle age prime, back when they were youngsters, but Tony could still out-act anyone in the room.

Young Tony and Andy in DoMD 1984

http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae145/ockoala/Tony%20Leung/andytony1.jpg

Andy was Emperor Kangxi, Tony was Wei Xiaoboa, the world's most irascible scoundrel - and they were BFFs 4evar!

They met up again so infamously in 2000's Infernal Affairs.

IMO, the best movie to come out of HK.

http://i966.photobucket.com/albums/ae145/ockoala/Tony%20Leung/tonyandy3.jpg

They chemistry in that last scene on the rooftop was still imcomparable. They are my first and ultimate acting bromance in the entertainment industry.

0

Hhhm, my proof reading ability seems to have evaporated? Sorry for the litter of typos in the post above.

Just wanted to say that in the picture on the lower right hand corner the young Tony/Andy pic, the girl on Tony's left is in fact Carina Lau, now his wifey.

She played one of his 7 wifeys in DoMD. TBH, none of the wifeys had any real chemistry with Tony. He saved it all for Andy. :-P

LOL that one is a very great bromance version, but I really like Jordan Chan's comedic timing. I like the lots of LOLs this version brings. Plus I think part of it is because I really grew up with the Jordan Chan version.

I will not go into the HORRID version that was the most recent Huang Xiaoming version where I wanted to punch the director because he ruined DoMD for me.

I almost felt like rewatching Smiling Wanderer for probably the fourth time... That book is tied as my favorite with Semi-gods and Demi-gods and both I've watched the adaptations many times.... Maybe I will when I'm feeling more serious. But it seems like right now I'm really up for comedy....

The only redeeming thing about the 2008 Huang Xiaoming version of DoMD (renamed The Royal Tramp in English) was the kids section.

Best kids acting I have ever seen from that little boy playing little Wei Xiaobao. Little Kangxi was alright, but little Xiaobao blew me away. Cute, precocious, and spot on comedic timing and acting.

Everything else was a disaster. Except all 7 wives were actually all pretty, as opposed to a couple pretty ones and the rest are all quite unattractive, which defeats the purpose of him getting 7 hot wives.

Smiling Proud Wanderer is my fave book, and Chow Yun Fat's 1984 version remains my fave adaptation.

I am really torn about Demi-Gods and Semi-devils, because it's a masterful book, but got you get your gut torn out when only two of the three leads gets a happy ending, and the one shafted gets shafted six-ways to Sunday in each portion of the book, I wanted to create a chart for "the million ways to torture and inflict mention and physical anguish on Xiao Feng."

Anyways, enjoy your watch! I do agree that it's easiest to love whichever adaptation you grew up with. Does that mean you also love LoCH 1994 and RoCH 1995 more than its 80s classics?

(haha hope codes come out right...)

So true. Back to my lifelong fangirling of JinYung. His novels are just sooo out of this world good, ANY adaptation of it is decent and entertaining enough a watch, and pawns all the shiteous scripts they are making dramas out of last decades.

This is quite sad, really.

I dig the nick Chinese wuxia girls and I'll squeeze myself in as one. *wave and hughughug twinnie*

I fear 4 the OTers shivering and humming their Redrum at the thought of me waving my JinYong novels/dramas along with my 'I'm bacckkkkk!' muahahaha XDD

DoMD have just so many genres weaved in I'm not sure if we should label it wuxia tbh. It can very well be the mother of all the HK Gamblers, Gangsters movies. Comedy, roflmao funny. Bromance that beats all bromance [ very off tangent sidenote (because I saw 10 min of it unintentionally last nite) : Dong Yi, so u think King loving some servant girl is EPIC?! how bout King loving platonically his eunuch whom he finds out is not a eunuch and he's not gay, (not) eunuch may assassinate him, spies for his antagonists, they cant both live, yet they LURVE each other more than they love their mothers?!]. Pairings, 7 of them (and many more flings). if that rocks ur boat, we even have a lot of kinky pink stuff if they really do it true to novel. Then political intrigue, court conspiracies....o and wuxia you name it, it's there, marvelously done.

The bromance btn KangXi and WXB is dearest to me fr everything I love in DoMD, because imo that's the core of getting all the wheels spinning throughout the epic and I judged adaptations mostly on that. Needless to say, nth will EVER touch Andy+Tony in DoMD84 (yesyesyes, THE best adaptation of LC novel ever) True, u can see the styrofoam mountains and skies, it's 80s hideous makeup on every face and questionable taste in beauty. Despite it all, it's just the best of the best even as a stand alone drama in terms of writing, directing, acting. (and there's the Leslie theme song!!!! I miss Leslie *sob*)

Jordan Chan is truest to the novel WXB in looks, but he is completely void of that intangible charisma a Tony Leung has which is most crucial in the casting of the character if u r going to put it on a screen. It's not really handsomeness, we've never heard of ppl wanna PS a Tony Leung's nose/chin. I need to be charmed off my socks when he's doing everything a lowly pervie scum will do without much of a conscience yet fully conscious in front of my very eyes. It's more disconcerting to see it, than read about it in the novel, for me.

I do agree DoMD98's slapstick is funny, but I cant in the love of wuxia reduce DoMD to gags. I need to fall in love with WXB like any one of his wifeys so I don't think all of them r nuts and retarded or else I'll throw things through most of the drama. I need that love also to not doubt if KangXi and all the big shots have lobotomies. It's like a Forrest Gump, u need to love THE Forrest Gump to follow it thro. In the case of this slimy sleazy WXB, it's even a much higher obstacle to overcome of coz. JY did that marvelously in the novel, DoMD98, not.

I'd rather watch the Dicky Cheung one for laughs because that one didnt even pretend to be true to anything written in the novel. It's so remote fr it I'm 100% sure I'm watching sth else fr the get go and it works on that level, laughs and all.

And DoMD is truly the JY ode to Hong Kong, his home sweet home. What's so off with the JZJ/HXM one is the complete obliteration of the wry, HK style comedy, those clever dirty play on Cantonese. I'm not sure if the mainland reader even get all that fr the novel, let alone the dour dull ZJZ making yet another of his 'true to paper and ink and treebark' adaptation with no heart and soul.

Can I just say WORD.

Or do I need to wuxia-spam OT again with you? I gladly would do that, you know?

But my sister wants me to finish Hot Gimmick so that I can discuss with her.

Seriously, I have to finish a manga for discussion. It's sad, we have no life.

Anyways, been sneak watching LoCH1983 teehee. SO FRAKING GOOD STILL. This is my pimp post of the day.

I second "WORD." I am mainly just rewatching DoMD'98 for laughs since I need major comedy in my life at this point, so that's why I stuck with the '98 version.

Okay, here is a tough question. I know Jin Yong is awesome and everything, but... if you had to choose a least favorite novel, which one would you choose?

I think there are a few that are less developed, i.e. Yuan Yang Dao, etc. that are shorter stories, but I feel like since they are not fully developed enough, I can't be justified to really call it a least favorite since I just can't say that much about it. But... right now my least favorite is leaning towards Shu Jian En Chou Lu (Book & Sword). I think it's because the main character totally kills it for me.

0

Hot Gimmick is a hot mess. Don't read the last one. Only read the alternate ending that some kind soul wrote, because otherwise you will want to burn the entire set, because really... tell me when you're done reading so I can get in on this conversation.

0

clichique, are you watching love buffet? I actually like it! Taiwanese dramas can get so annoying with an overly "cute" lead girl who overdoes it on the cute, so much so I want to puke. But this girl is funny, and I like Calvin (I must be the only one cos everybody else seems to be rooting for Aaron). Aaron's so sour he tires me. Calvin's all sunshiny goodness. Ok if you haven't watched it, got 3 words for you: This. You. Forget. (Gosh, writing the 3 words gives me goosebumps...HY! I LOVE YOU!)

Oh.. for some reason I thought it had Rainie Yang and for me, any TW drama with her is a deal breaker (I just cannot deal with her at all... period. And she always chooses characters I can't get behind... well, not always, but still, many of her past characters totally ruined her for me).

BUT turns out I am wrong. Maybe I will watch it. IDK, TW dramas are REALLY, REALLY hit or miss with me. And they definitely overdo the cute. It pisses me off like none other. Oh and their girls almost never have a backbone. Pisses me off more (omg so much rage... I need to take up yoga again). I hate seeing wet lettuces, and I always see them here. ALWAYS.

Read the synopsis... it is exactly like the manga Parfait Tic. Oh, wait, it says it's based off of that. Oh. Big surprise. TW dramas, WHERE IS YOUR CREATIVITY. Oh wait, sorry, I'm watching TW dramas what am I talking about. Wait. Wait. Did they not even change their names?? Like the original manga character Daiya -> Daya. And Ichi -> Ah Yi (which means one or ichi in Japanese).

Although... I loved that manga. Except when they threw in crap and tore her away from Ichi because I liked Ichi more. Omg freaking dilemma... OKAY FINE I WILL WATCH. But if this TW drama disappoints me... oh wait, happened too many times I probably am used to it.

Sigh. I'm turning psychotic. I blame it on certain people. I see you, SSH. I see you. Stop looking at me like that, SSH, I know what you want to do, but I'm gonna pretend I'm not seeing anything. COVER MY EYES.

Happened to me twice while watchin MP. One's where Seol & Prof. Comfy McHottie ate ramen. I paused the video and dashed to the kitchen to prepare instant noodles. And the other time was when the chef prepared milk for Seol.

But when you say "diet" what comes to mind are the times when i almost skipped meals while engrossed watching k-dramas. My tummy knows how to 'sound the alarm' when hungry.

i discovered how to lose some of the fat while still enjoying the kdrama crack: oatmeal power shots! that will keep u up til yr next proper meal....which may take you another 20 hours if you are doing a marathon :-)

if you still have the strength to prep a meal: instead of meat, try fresh green salads (without the heavy dressing...just lemon and olive oil will do) and raw nuts eg peanuts which is high in resveratrol...anti-ageing stuff u can find from red wine. brown or red rice instead of the white variety, if you are a rice eater. complex carbohydrates like sweet potato is a nice a alternative. sardines are also good they say :-) fresh fruits are easy to pop in yr mouth when yr busy skimming and LOL through all the comments and posts in Dramabeans, ehehe!

Javabeans, Girlfriday... have you heard or read anything at all? I've been waiting for this drama since LAST YEAR. The last rumor was SBS for MArch 2011.

Do you think that this drama will get shelved like Birdie Buddy?

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. I can't imagine that to happen. I think I will have a meltdown.
