Dream High 2 to audition cast via reality show

Dream High has announced the production of a sequel series, and that has everyone in a tizzy trying to either guess the new cast, or offer up their favorites for a fantasy version. Well, according to a KBS variety programming executive, they’re getting TWO shows in one (kaching!), because they’ll be holding a separate reality show covering auditions to find the new cast members.

Of course, not all of the cast will be selected via audition — I’m sure they’ve got idols lined up who’d dearly love that shot to break out into their acting careers — but those who make it through the reality program will get background roles. Which may even be better — imagine you’re a Dream High fan. Imagine your favorite idols get cast in the sequel. And then imagine that you get to play…their best friend. Or tormentor. Or rival, whatever.

This is quite possibly brilliant. It’s like the What’s Up auditions, juiced up and televised and turned into an entertainment property all its own. Well, the drama was known for its meta awareness and pop-culture referencing, so it only makes sense that that sequel go all-out in the meta department, yeah?

The reality auditions will be held in the latter half of the year, as they have another reality program in the works that will air first. KBS is also looking at production concepts for MC and comedian reality shows.

Dream High 2 is aiming to hit the airwaves in January 2012, co-produced again by Bae Yong-joon’s Keyeast and Park Jin-young’s JYP Entertainment. I have no interest in seeing Yonsama reprise his anemic cameo, but man oh man had they better bring back Park’s hysterically offbeat character. That dude was a scene-stealer if there ever was one. (Trivia! JYP named his character, Yang Jin-man, after the “Big 3” music-biz CEOs: There’s YG’s Yang Hyun-seok; his own name, Park Jin-young; and SM’s Lee Soo-man.) Both Bae and Park are in talks to serve as the judges for the reality program.

And a sequel? With a reality TV show on top? I'm in! Especially if the teachers are still going to be there and the original misfits make cameos!!

Why cant they just have some of cast from DH1 and just add more characters?? I only just got to like them!! I want them all: Jason and pilsook + their cuteness, jin guk + hotness, Sam dong and hye mi + their relationship and eun Jung as the "evil" dance teacher!! Gawd I even want the teachers!!! :)

what i want for the drama is to have the orginal cast make their camo. i mean i could say season2 is what happened between the flash forward so it would be cute to see the cast pop in an out. like our cute Milky couple could appear as guess teachers for the day or a student of season 2 can run into on the street.

I LOVED Dream High to death but I can understand that feeling. When people hype things up so much I can't force myself to watch it. That's why I rarely watch hyped Western films until years after they come out lol....still haven't watched Benjamin Button.

I guess to love it you would have to have watched it whilst it aired. Half the excitement is waiting a week to find out what happened.

Yes, it was pretty average (good-to-omg-stop-it-wooyoung kind of acting, predictable plot, cute ending) so I get what you mean. I ABSOLUTE FRIGGIN' loved it though. Like, rabidly loved it. So much so that I'm tracking down all T-ara vids for Eunjung and everything IU ever did. But my love for it stems from the fact that I imagined the three girls were having a secret relationship in the series

I think this is a "brilliant' move in the part of Keyeast, JYP Entertainment, and KBS, this format has made lots of $$$ for people like Simon Cowell (X Factor, etc), Tsunku (Morning Musume, Berryz Kobo), I think DH2 auditions and drama its about to Sky rocket, and made the producer a ton of cash!

Congrats! DH2!!!!!

So glad they're making a sequel, and even if it is idol-laden like the first one, I'll still watch it.

It really depends on when they hold auditions, though, since I'm only there from mid-August to Christmas...

ooh, that would be incredible! but then they'd have to bring back taecyeon in at least a minor role, since she's been harboring a childhood crush on him and we all know that fodder is too ripe for a kdrama to pass up.

Required fields are marked *

Whoa. I'd love that! After all, I shipped Hyesun-Taecyeon! Haha

And maybe, just maybe, through this sequel we'd be enlightened as to what really happened to the Misfits' post-Kirin lives just to even out the kinda ambiguous finale we got in the original.. not really bring them back, maybe cameos here and there, or references in the blog, news, etc.. Gawd.. that'd be too awesome!

Now, how do I contain this excitement? (:

It's interesting; there have always been sequels to some of the more light-hearted, "idol" variety dramas so It's cool to see that this is no different...

I cant wait to see what happens.

I've always wanted to see what actually went down during the What's Up auditions. (there were sooo many articles)
This looks like a good compensation haha. :D

It would be clever if they worked in the Dream High Universe meta -- a DH1 cast story line w/out necessarily having the cast readily present. I'd love to see an an ongoing K story line told through gossip and blogs, so that the DH2 cast can shine on their own, but the reality of the DH universe becomes parallel dimensionally speaking. For instance, videos of the original cast on YouTube, so they are separate but still observable... Perhaps DH2 could set three years in the future or so, allowing the original cast to be the hit group, but no longer attend the school...and we could see Hye Sun develop artistically, so that the character could have a long term story arch. This last thought reveals my feeling that combined with the reality show auditions and other brilliant tweaks Dream High could last a long long time, and hopefully maintain freshness (because its kept in a cool, dry place).

I understand that everyone wants their favourite characters reprising their roles, and continue to show their lives after the school. But the drama was about their journey, and they have reached their destination. I, for one, loved the drama for its concept. I think it's kinda fresh, plus their angst aren't exaggerated like other dramas, which makes it easy to watch. And the whole underdog formula really makes you root for them.

It would be great to see new people on the show, idols or not. The important thing is the journey they go through, and how their characters relate to one another in their journey. Fighting JYP! (And oh, so totally love JYP's idea for the Yang Jin Man name!)

I'm not sure if a Dream High 2 will be as exciting or interesting. Dream High was awesome mostly because it was really surprising. It had a ton of heart and even exposed a dark issue in celeb life. I don't want Dream High will be like Gokusen 2 and 3. Same story, different characters.

For all 'foreigners' who wish they can join the casts : GO FOR IT! heheh. K-pop nowadays is going global, and some of the idols are not Korean - so why not? I think JYPE already has that thought in mind too.

I agree if they bring back Hye Sung ( the girl who plays the teenage HS is a member of Idol group, right? ) as the link of DH1, and the original casts as cameo. Even though I love DH1's casts to bits I don't think I want them come back in DH2 more than as cameos. Let's start anew!

But I do really hope they keep the teachers! and Yang Jinman you're better still teaching at Kirin!!

Yea... but the non-Korean idols are still Asians ie. Orientals and fair-skinned. The Koreans will only accept this kind. The most "non-Korean" - to me - is Nick Khun. But boys who look like him seem to be a dime a dozen in Thai entertainment. I was at a music fest in Thailand recently and I'm amazed at the number of fair-skinned male entertainers they have. All very cute looking too. So, Nick Khun is really nothing special ... in this context.

omg Thai male actors! I completely agree about their looks; collectively, they all pretty much have the same features that make them a staid group of "handsome"

...but damn are they pretty.

Maybe this is just me, but sometimes they are prettier than their female counterparts as well >_<

"but khun is asian in the sense he is partially oriental cuz his mum is chinese?"

i always think of oriental as a "flavor" instead of an ethnicity or race.. so it sounds like he's oriental tasting to me. lol.

@vision, i actually think most Thai actors are darker skinned, but use a lot of whitening make up to give them the lighter complexion, whereas Khun is actually lighter skinned compared to other Thai males.

i can see an awesome storyline for DH2 were they to cast Park Eun Bin as Hyesung! Say, her sister is so famous, and she also wants to be an entertainer, but has always been known as "Hyemi's sister"....the angst ensues! Esp. since we know from DH1 that Hyesung also goes to Kirin!! I just love Park Eun Bin unconditionally so Im biased. But generally I like all KeyEast actors and JYP idols so any would be fine, I guess :D

I was hoping they'd film the drama in a warmer season, cuz spring or summer might be a nice touch to the sequel no? And we wouldn't have to see the actors' breath during scenes in inside settings. Oh well, still glad. I hope the idols cast for this sequel are experienced in acting, like ft island's hongki or t-ara's jiyeon. But then again, suzy, taec, wooyoung, and iu are all newbies and they pulled through pretty fine.

woohoooo,,,if the sequel can maintain the juiciness of the original, then Im so on board!!!

I also think that Park Eun Bin will reprise her role as adult Hye Sung because 1)she was so carefully placed in the finale as a Kirin-ers(possible teaser?) 2)the girl is a Keyeast artiste, and when i check their website, is one of the few teen actors they have there so for sure BYJ would want to propel her name up there, just like the case with KSH in DH1 3)PEB is a veteran child actress, so to say, it makes sense if they hand her the lead role as she has the chops to pull it off (her resume in dramawiki is longer than most older actors!)

And then we're talking abt the idol roles - i kinda hope DH2's cast can spread beyond JYP scope, i mean the rest of 2PM members are WAY too old for high school (heck, it was hard to suspend belief that Taec doesnt look 16 at all-_-), then there are 2AM's Jinwoon or 2PM's Chansung, but thats it. TBH not too excited abt them :P Aint it cool if someone from SHINee/BEAST/MBLAQ can act in here? Some members of those groups have proven they can act (at least) decently: Kikwang, Minho, Joon. Well, cant wait to hear who's cast!

Agreed. I want the idol cast to have some non-jyp idols but since jyp is co-producing it again, that's probably not gonna happen. And sooo agree about taec, I loled at seeing the birth year on his character profile thing, a 1993'er, so hard to believe xD . If it must be jyp idols, I think miss A's min, wg's lim and sohee, and 2am's jinwoon can pass for highschoolers, it hasn't been long since those idols graduated from highschool in real life.
