Love Rain holds initial script reading

Huh, script reading already? Love Rain isn’t scheduled to air till 2012, but the main cast convened recently for its first script reading, which included actors Jang Geun-seok, Yoon-ah, Kim Shi-hoo, Sohn Eun-seok, Hwang Bora, and Seo In-gook. (I use the term scheduled loosely; technically Love Rain isn’t scheduled at all, in that it doesn’t have a concrete timeslot, but producers are aiming to secure a broadcast slot for early next year.)

Regarding the drama’s story, Yoon PD said, “There were a lot of one-sided loves in the ’70s era, a time period that the actors haven’t experienced for themselves. It was also a happy time, and the script reflects a lot of the emotions and experience that still linger in my memory.” According to one production company source, “Veteran PD Yoon Suk-ho led the proceedings and explained everything in detail, not leaving out even the smallest thing.”

Yoon-ah, playing two roles as a university student in the 1970s and her plucky daughter in 2012, said, “The two characters have conflicting traits, so I felt the burden of playing both roles. But after working with the director, writer, and other actors I feel like we fit well together, which is reassuring.”

Sounds like Yoon PD has a very specific idea for what he wants to achieve, and I predict the drama will heavily bear his imprint: Scenic locales, a mood-enhancing soundtrack, a strong dose of sentimentality, and lots of melodramangst. In all the news about Yoon Suk-ho and his young cast, I hadn’t paid as much attention to the writer, but now that I remember that Oh Soo-yeon worked on Season Dramas Autumn Fairy Tale (scriptwriter) and Winter Sonata (initial writer), as well as the Cinderella story All About Eve and the extremely angsty A Star’s Lover, I’m feeling warier than ever. I love a good melodrama and I’m not averse to angst, but I hope Love Rain’s pure-love and fated-through-the-generations premise can convey youthful melodrama in a new way, rather than giving us Hallyu Dramas Redux.

I have high hopes for the green artists.
But for Yoona, ~sigh~ she is likable enough but her emotional range from You Are My Destiny and Cinderella man, leaves so much doubt in my heart that this drama is gonna be anything but bad.

cause I think its bad for a drama to be sole carried by only One Lead. Hope they somehow have chemistry, cause so far Yoona has zero chemistry with her leading men.

but will be praying and wishing that it will be okay cause I pretty much loved all of Yoon PD's seasonal dramas.

I also think this drama is going to tank (only due to YoonA's track record for dramas/acting), but who knows maybe by some drama miracle it'll turn out to be a hit. Jang Geun Seok is in it and he is always fantastic; if I watch Love Rain it will only be for him.

If we keep our expectations super low, then almost anything should be able to beat our initial feeling. All this talk about how particular Yoon PD is and I still don't get why YoonA is the leading lady or more like leading ladies.

Heh, and in that first picture of Jang Geun Suk, I initially thought it was YoonA. HA! I keep mistaking him for a woman.

Required fields are marked *

? She's headed two dramas, and You are My Destiny did very well in ratings. Her track record is no indication that this will tank.

Her acting, on the other hand, clearly leaves much to be desired. But I dunno.. there have been plenty of hits with mediocre/ bad actors. It's possible that this drama will do well. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it's not like an old Hallyu drama that goes overboard with the angst.

don't get me wrong, i like yoona, she was okay in you're my destiny...but isn't this story a bit heavy for a newbie...i'm sceptical, i hope it'll work! I have to say she's brave to take on the role/s...

Technically, she's not really a newbie at all. She doesn't have many dramas under her resume but one of her dramas was a hit. I'd say I'm not surprised she was able to snag (another) lead role.

That aside, she's still not a great actress and is kinda bland. Melos need to tug at your heart, so I have high expectations because I don't want to NOT watch it because of one person. Especially since theres JGS <3

That's a nice way of summarizing all the other negative comments about Yoona. :D

And is there room for one more to hide? I need to go WAY in the back, because I don't think that JGS has that much depth as an actor, either.

Seeing all of those perky, freshly-scrubbed faces around the table, they all look too pampered and young to really have something to lose. This looks and sounds ("I think we will fit well together!") like Dream High 2, not Winter Sonata 2.

OMG - this looks like it's going to come across like a dated Jackie Collins book - without the swearing and sex.

Has Yoon PD done anything since his quadruplet dramas? I can see him channeling the 70's - that's easy. The Beatles, bell-bottom pants, long, lanky boy-hair, Rain's wardrobe from Full House (eeek!) and the 70's are set to go. Easy.

It's bringing this drama up to now that might be problematic for him and writer-nim. Can he do "current"?
Is that why he's pushing all these young idols onto this leaky boat?

Hope it doesn't sink with all hands aboard.

Maybe that's the story twist - they fall in love and then find out they are twins, because the 70's couple had them and then each one took a child. And the parents try to split them up in the modern day story, but they do not want to be split up and they look so much alike so they trim their hair so it matches and then they switch places because JGS never got to spend time with his mommy and they decide to plot to bring their parents back together again---wait a second. I am describing The Parent Trap. Hayley Mills, where are you when we need you?!

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

To read a script.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

:) Yes... I should rephrase!

Is it like an introduction of the cast thing?
I thought most dramas don't have all their script at the beginning due to the live shoot system?
Or is it like a 'test the waters' thing, like an audition and if the actor doesn't work out at the script reading he/she gets replaced?
Some posters were expressing surprise that it's so early. Why's that?

Required fields are marked *

Yoona is not a great actor but she is not the only one in korean dramas that can not act at all. I do think jgs is a talented actor but even if he was paired with another great actress it does not always mean it will be great. It is pity.

I haven't seen enough of Yoona acting to judge, but I feel the PD or someone in charge wanted an idol (or two?) in their drama anyway. I think I remember reading they were considering TOP for JGS's role. I feel that for idols starting out acting (or having their first leading role), this is a pretty heavy project to take on. It worked in You're Beautiful bc yonghwa, hongki (I think that's his name) and uee were supporting characters and it was a rom com. I hope this turns out okay, storyline sounds interesting, but I guess we'll see
