Jung Yumi fills out the Rooftop love triangle
by | January 20, 2012 | 29 Comments

Time-jumping fantasy romance drama Rooftop Prince now has its first love triangle with the casting of Jung Yumi, who recently wrapped up the melo weepfest Thousand Day Promise.

Ha, I guess that makes her the first actress to act with both Park brothers, what with Yoo-hwan in Promise and now Yoochun as the Joseon-era prince-out-of-water who finds himself in modern Korea. (Although I’m not sure she ever shared a scene with Yoo-hwan, come to think of it.)

I get an additional laugh out of this casting news because it comes just a day after her management issued a “What? This is the first we’re hearing of this news” statement when rumors of her involvement surfaced. I get the knee-jerk denial that comes when your big announcement gets bogarted by the press, but there are smoother ways to do it.

In Rooftop Prince, Jung Yumi plays a woman who’s skilled at playing the coy innocent, which should be a big change from her sweet, frank-to-a-fault character in Promise. She was often a frustrating doormat in that drama, but I had grudging respect for her overall goodness of character. Let’s see if she can turn that off and play the romantic spoiler here.

Rooftop Prince also stars Han Ji-min as the prince’s lost beloved in the past, as well as a modern woman who’s the spitting image of that princess in contemporary Korea. The drama will air on SBS beginning in March.

With all the upcoming dramas swimming in my head (LSG & HJW, YAIinFK, DH2, SU:FBB, etc), I got a little confused reading this and thought she was the lead until I read the last paragraph. *sigh* Another thing I got confused about was that I thought she was the Gye Choon-bin/QSS Jung Yumi that I know of. So now I know she’s the younger Jung Yumi or JY2. She should’ve used a stage name. ;)

I’m thinking of watching The King/Rooftop Prince and checking out first few episodes of FK for YAI even though i’m not sure if i’ll like it i’ll give it a try
      Skipping DH2
      What is SU:FBB?

Can’t really skip DH2 especially the first episode mostly because I like Kang Sora and I liked DH1. Plus, Kim Soo-hyun’s doing his cameo. ;)

I’m not sure about Rooftop Prince. March is kinda empty drama-wise, but school can get pretty busy and I’m not enticed by anything of that drama yet.

Ace, those are my thoughts exactly about DH2. I gotta watch it just for KSH’s cameo at the very least. Plus, it’s possible that the show will go on to be superb like the first season. And I also like Kang Sora because of Sunny. The new 4min trailer isn’t anything to write home about though.

wow….who would think this would come about of YAIinFK? hehe

I can can see her in that role.
I agree as to the Promise role – the doormat-martyr type although surprisingly sweet. BUT in one of the last episodes, when the baby was being sent to the grandparents, she accompanied – carried the baby and chatted with the daddy. She made an impression that she got everything back from SeoYeon and kinda took her place. I am not really sure whether it was intentional or maybe I was oversensitive, but her single expression seemed to be so triumphant that I was almost scared.
Hmm, am I going to give this drama a try? Until now the biggest incentive was … the rooftop. It brings back memories of my beloved (and first) kdrama – Attic Cat :)

LOL on the rooftop love :D

Why is it we like rooftop scenes…IDK why really. But my fave dramas all have a good amount of the Rooftop.
(MGIAG, Coffee Prince, City Hunter to name a few^^)

So true! I think it’s the feeling of freedom and romance you get by being so close to the open sky. Perfect for TV. :)

I liked it when I heard she was cast through Twitter :D

She’s adorable and though she was annoying in Promise, she gives off this something or other I can’t quite put my finger on that I like. LOL. We’ll see how she does. Hope she’ll do it justice.

But yeah, seriously, Management Companies! Be more smooth, why don’t ya?

I know, right? Wouldn’t it be less embarrassing to just stay silent for a day?

“Jung Yumi plays a woman who’s skilled at playing the coy innocent”

I haaaate those kind of characters. I’d rather her character be upfront and straightforward about what she wants(the guy) instead of playing innocent and pretending to be nice, omg those characters piss the hell out of me.

  7. malta

I hope she doesn’t have a lisp like in Thousand Days Promise…

  8. JD

She has a refreshing face. ^^ But I HATE her character description already -_- She better not come out as one-dimensional

  9. Laica

LOL at your tag “Jung Yumi 2″. I actually like her, she’s a decent actress and she also has a very likable screen presence. But her choice of stage name is unfortunate, because it always reminds me of the way more talented and charismatic Jung Yumi I saw first.

Still, she made a character I would normally want to stab with a fork sympathetic in TDP, so I hope she’ll make the similarly hateful “coy and innocent” second lead likeable too.

On a random note, “Rooftop Prince” is one of the best titles of a kdrama that I’ve heard in a while. Short, descriptive, sounds cool, and it has the contrast of the rooftop apartment with its association of being poor, with the title of royalty. Love it!

So excited for this drama – don’t disappoint me, Show!

she was one of my faves in “assorted gems.” sure she was a pushover in 1000 days promise, but she had more pluck in “AG.” she played a knocked up innocent most of the drama (sure, it’s a contradiction, in terms, but she grew as a woman over time/pregnancy, and their was a sassiness to her that was fun. she has good comedic timing, so it might add some fun. we shall see

I thought i heard news that Lee Tae Sung (Playful Kiss) also confirms as one of four leads.

I love Tae Sung but i hope he does not overshine Yoochun. Yoochun is my bais. I do have reservations of his acting like others but i think he has great potential. I just hope people will be more lienient towards him because he does tries his hardest.

Interesting. I kind of like the way the cast for this drama is shaping up.

I’m glad to see Jung Yumi’s career on an upward track.

I’ve only seen her in “Dong Yi” where she had a supporting role, but she, frankly, stole the scenes from Han Hyo joo.

  14. 14 dina

yuck, she old!!! the main lead IS 25…!

    • 14.1 bd

I’d hardly call being 27 (28 Korean age) old.

So a female can’t be a few years older than her male costar, unlike male stars who are regularly years (if not decades) older?

    • 14.2 Mei

Yuchun’s ex is now 31-32 so he likes them older, lol. By that standard 27 is fairly young.
