Jung Yong-hwa quits Heirs citing difference of opinion

Huh, this is a surprise: Jung Yong-hwa has announced he is leaving the production of He Who Wears the Crown, Endure Its Weight: Heirs (which we’ll just call Heirs, since I think the full title is lame—look into taglines, show). Granted he’s already got a full-time job leading an idol band so it’s not like his schedule isn’t busy, but the reason being cited isn’t a packed agenda but a “difference of opinion with producers.”

I say it’s surprising because this drama is about as close as you get to a sure thing (at this stage, I mean, where we’re going purely based on past records and logline descriptions): We’ve got star writer Kim Eun-sook at the helm (having propelled slick, bantery shows like Secret Garden, A Gentleman’s Dignity, and On Air to ratings heights), and Lee Min-ho (Faith) and Park Shin-hye (Flower Boy Next Door) are signed on as the leads. True, Jung Yong-hwa’s role wasn’t the primary lead, but as the guy destined to be disappointed in love in a hot new trendy, he was primed to rake in the sympathy points.

However, according to his agency, Jung’s reps and the producers were unable to meet eye to eye on his character. It was Jung’s side that decided he would leave the show, though reportedly both sides were in mutual agreement.

I’ll be frank: I shed no tears over this news. I do like Jung Yong-hwa and CN Blue is a great poppy rock band whose songs are an instant pick-me-up. I think he can be dryly amusing, which we saw a bit of in You’ve Fallen For Me. On the other hand, he has very little dynamism to his acting, and he tends to feel flat in his line readings and emotions, so I don’t think he’s on par with either Lee Min-ho or Park Shin-hye. So if his departure means someone else gets the opportunity to really step it up and infuse some energy up in this hizzy, I’m all for it. Plus, yes, I think I can go a few more years before seeing Yong-hwa and Park Shin-hye paired together again. I know dramaland is a tiny world and repairings are hard to avoid at some point, but three times in three years is a bit much.

So instead, Jung Yong-hwa will focus on his upcoming world tour with CN Blue, then work on recording a new album with the band in the latter half of the year. He is also looking at different acting projects.

Heirs, meanwhile, is aiming for a fall premiere; October’s the tentative date.

Regardless of what fans are saying - most idols can't act.

I used to be an avid fan of K-drama, I used to respect it, until I was tortured watching K-idols's "trying hard acting" in 16 episodes. Then, I learned that I was not the only one as most of my friends have switched to Japanese dramas and I watched Rich Man, Poor Woman with merely 11 episodes and I like it.

The most recent K-drama I watched was Flower Boy Next Door but only until the 12th episode because the last four the script was dragging as though there was a different writer in the last four. But what glued me to FBND was the Yoon Shi Yoon and Park Shin Hye and others too.

I believe that K-drama industry must get their act together. The appeal of K-drama overseas is losing for reasons such as poor acting (tortuous in fact), casting (sometimes, the mother is too young to be cast as a mother and the actors ability are not at par with the role they are acting - another torture), script writing (they now lack artistry - most are dependent on a week-to-week viewership rating and I tend to perceive that there is really no tangible script, if there is it is limited to 5 episodes only) and in this digital age my choices are varied from almost every country. I switched off K-dramas, and I switched on other choices.

I have watched the Yong Hwa act. Compared with Hongki - an idol and also a talent of FNC - HongKi is way way way better than all the other talents of FNC, YH is a talented composer and musician, that's where his talent is - in terms of voice, Hongki is also way better. For idols, they have to look at themselves realistically and accept their strengths and weaknesses, same with their agencies who have to "mature" in this area.

This. Even less demanding audiences eventually get tired of the same old badly done, shallow, idol-filled and cliche-ridden works lacking any effort or creativity or originality and most of the times even basic coherence (live-filming ftw...). If Kdrama keeps going this way, people will look to other industries for something different and of higher quality.

While I don't plan to watch this series, I'll frankly be happy if Jung does not act again. He just doesn't have it. No talent, no skills. He is a good singer, song-writer etc, he should stick to that and his agency should realize that too. They are supposed to promote their idol and show all his best traits, not keep reminding people about how much he sucks at certain things.

I'm not saying Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye are award-worthy actors. Both are extremely flawed and still not consistent, frankly. So when even your leads are relatively weak, casting someone completely ill-equipped as a second lead just to make them look better is really really not a good idea. And it's generally not a good idea to cast actors who simply can't act. I don't care how pretty they look, if they can't flesh out a character, I'd rather stare at a pretty floor lamp. It evokes the same emotions from me. Sometimes, even more. I like lamps.

I agree that Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye are (big) award-worthy actors... yet but I don't think they are extremely flawed either
Though I agree they aren't that consistent and
They need real actors instead of idols

that's why watching old kdrama is more interesting than new drama, lately popularity is the main thing. If the main lead weak get strong actor for second lead is the best choice, i see Kim sung soo he almost always get second lead if the main is weak, Say you love me, full house, stained glass. He 's recognize for his acting not his popularity, yes i know he's old now

I guess 3 times is a not a charm for JYH and PSH. Badly handled all around. I wish him the best in his World Tour with CN Blue. I'm a fan of his music, but not his acting.

I heard that they changed it from a college to a high school based drama about rich chaebol students? Aren't Lee Min Ho and PSH a little too old to be portraying high schoolers again?

I'm just wondering if this is a good career move on JYH's part? He's not the greatest actor, so will this impact him getting future roles? He was lucky enough that they even wanted him as a second lead.

Anyway, there are a lot of young male actors who are extremely talented and can act the pants off of JYH. His loss, their gain. It will be interesting who will be cast in this roles after all this brouhaha.

The headline is not right. Yong Hwa did not quit, the production company and scriptwriter did not agree with the demands of FNC so the negotiation and potential contract agreement broke down. Therefore, Yong Hwa was not cast. He did not quit. They were shown the door.

Sorry, but you're wrong. You make it sound like they were in negotiation, and the negotiations broke down. Not true. A few weeks ago FNC released an official statement that Yong Hwa was cast in heirs -- that means he accepted the role. Every press release since yesterday has said he pulled out. If FNC officially said he was in, and now he's out, it means he pulled out. I like Yong Hwa, but let's call a spade a spade.

Get your facts straight too.

The negotiation broke down between FNC and the production team of Heirs. You can do a press release, but its different when contracts are drawn. Press release does not equate to agreement.

It has nothing to do with Yong Hwa - he is a talent of FNC who does the negotiation for them.

If the headline is correct - do you mean to say that Yong Hwa is now a indispensable talent in acting in Korean drama?

You, as a fan must help Yong Hwa maximize his talent, and his talent is not in acting but in making in composing and playing instruments. You'll help him if you encourage him to do his best in his talents, and if he thought he is such a great actor to influence the scriptwriter and call it quits if he doesn't get what he wants - then that shows arrogance.

Negotiation means discussion is still ongoing. The commitment was made for him to participate in the role (whether by him or the agency). You didn't address my main point, which was that his own agency announced he was doing the part. Meaning that part of negotiations was clearly over! I'm not saying he had a legal obligation to fulfill, since contracts were not signed yet, but that still does not imply ongoing negotiations.

"If the headline is correct – do you mean to say that Yong Hwa is now a indispensable talent in acting in Korean drama? " I'm not sure what this even means, but I never said that or implied it.

As a fan, I don't have any obligation but to act appropriately and not be nasty to other fans -- which *I* have not done. I'll buy his music if it's good, and I'll watch his dramas if I feel so inclined. Personally I think it's nice to branch out and try other areas, but if he doesn't want to, that's fine. I still maintain that saying you're going to do something and then going back on it isn't the best way to handle things. Maybe it had nothing to do with him, maybe it was all FNC - I don't know.

I'm done with this whole discussion after this comment. It's really sad how you can't say anything without some fans going all crazy on you. Idols are not saints, they're human beings too. Nothing wrong with admitting when they do something less than professional. So disappointing that you can't have a discussion with people about it in an adult fashion. Sometimes K-pop fan really earn their reputations.

As soon as I've seen that news, I'm itching to post/ let you guys know that he dropped the drama. I love Yong and I can count the ways he! :D I was relieved with that news for I know he will be bashed here. Yonghwa is awesome in variety but not in drama. I was willing to deny all criticisms that he will receive from that drama just to see him regularly on screen. Love is bearing the pain (borrowed from I Need Romance)
But this is good news for me! See you in Hong Kong CNBLUE!

I think it will prove to be a good move for him. In fact, I hope LMH pulls out too. The story is just so uninteresting although the writer has written big hits. Even if they act well enough, there is no breakthrough from a perspective of an actor. How long does one want to play a student? Just cast some younger but good actors so that it can be their breakout role. Yong-hwa and LMH should take roles that make people sit up and kill all criticism.

why some keep on prejudging?
what's wrong with a high school drama?
what do you know about the plot?
"Boys over flowers" is also a high school drama BUT the plot is very mind blowing!
the very first episodes were in high school but they did not show the boring classes and problems of students with their teachers and others of that kind!!

the plot is awesome, the drama "boys over flowers" was broadcast in 19 countries.

now when you check the profile of "boys over flowers" in dramawiki you can see that the genre is "high school" BUT THEY ONLY CARRIED THE AGE OF A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT. a lot of things happen in this drama apart from those boring ones at high school!!!

BUT I am wondering who will be selected,HOW ABOUT THE SECOND ACTRESS!!???
they have revealed so little about the drama,a die-hard and devoted MINOZ like can hardly wait.

I TOTALLY disagree with your opinion!!! Jung Yong Hwa is a great actor and has spark-filled emotion filled with his hard work. I'm sorry, but I think PSH doesn't belong there, in my opinion, she should get better roles with rookies. Lee Min Ho is too professional of an actor for her, maybe both. Still all of them are hardworking, beautiful idols. I don't think you should think so lowly of JYH, who are you to criticize and discriminate him, really go get a life. Thank You :) I hope you didn't take this the wrong way.

Minho is one of my few faves. Now, I recognized Yong Hwa from " You're So Beautiful". And I like him now. Hopefully, after his tour, He will have a new project.. Yong Hwa is awesome when he sings and OMG! When he is playing his guitar:-). Encore (rock).

I do however think that that this guy not being in this drama is good for him and good for the show.

I like him just fine, but I just didn't feel him with the other leads ALL COMBINED in this show, if that makes sense. The combination in my head didn't work.

I read all of the comments, and I agree with most of them. I'm a fan of CNBlue, but Yonghwa's company should've considered everything before releasing an official announcement. As much as I love Yonghwa's charisma and music, I also agree that his acting is not on par with Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye. I wish the best for him on his tour and upcoming schedule.
On another note, I'm extremely excited for this drama since it's Lee Min Ho's next drama after 'Faith'! ^^ The casting for the second lead will be a topic to discuss until he's casted; I love all the hype for unknown second lead! Hopefully his acting will be on par with the main pair and bring the ratings up during broadcast!
On the second lead casting, I don't think they'll cast any actor that has previously worked with Park Shin Hye or Lee Min Ho to avoid reminders of other dramas series.
If they decide to cast an idol, please let him be a decent actor.
