I Hear Your Voice: Episode 7

I don’t know if my heart can take much more of this. This show turns me into a nervous wreck, I tell you. Everything goes into full swing today—the crush, the budding romance, and the danger. Augh, the danger. If I could just put all the people I love in this world into a little bubble… okay, that would make for a boring show. But there would still be puppies and rainbows!

EPISODE 7: “Why is a sad premonition never wrong”

Hye-sung goes for a run early in the morning—too early, and in too remote an area for my liking. She chats on the phone with Mom cheerily, and ignores the strange feeling she gets that someone is behind her. Don’t ignore that. Why would you ignore that?

She keeps going toward the river, and then stops on a bridge to tie her shoelace… when a man runs up behind her, picks her up, and throws her over.

The outline is Min Joon-gook’s, but we never get a lingering shot of his face.

She lands with a splash and struggles to stay afloat, but she starts to sink. Mom panics on the other end of the line, screaming for Hye-sung to answer her. Suddenly someone else dives into the water to pull her up to the surface…

And then Mom wakes up in a cold sweat. Oh phew. It’s a dream. She wonders to herself: “What kind of dream is this vivid? Why did I have this dream…?”

As they head out to start their day, Hye-sung tells Su-ha about her mom’s series of dream premonitions and how they always come true. He doesn’t believe in that stuff, and calls it all coincidence. She pauses to ask why he’s not helping her carry her big files, and he just says without skipping a beat that his own bag is plenty heavy. Ha.

But when Hye-sung gets ready to leave on her bus, he reads her thoughts and sees that she’s worried about what her mom’s dream could mean. So he hops on her bus to take her all the way to work, and even carries her files for her.

She’s clearly happy about it, but also worries that he’s going to be late for school, and tells him that he doesn’t need to do all this, because Sung-bin told her that he’s felt indebted to her for ten years. She says she would’ve testified ten years ago regardless of him, so there’s no debt to repay.

He swears that that’s not it at all, so she asks why he’s doing all this for her. His eyes dart around nervously… Suddenly he notices an empty seat and points it out, and she runs over to claim it, forgetting that he never answered her question.

Kwan-woo catches up to them on the street just outside the office, and Hye-sung has this hilarious moment where she stops herself from turning around too eagerly, and coaches herself to go with a cool, aloof concept.

Su-ha watches with a frown as she compliments Kwan-woo on his new look (Sadness—I miss dorkypants. He was so cute.) and Kwan-woo asks if Su-ha was the dongseng she had to help yesterday when she ran off.

He treats Su-ha like a kid and tries to tell him to stop getting into trouble, but Su-ha just cuts him off and leaves with a curt goodbye. But he lingers to watch them, his lip curling up in horror as Kwan-woo gives her the chocolate he’s been carrying since yesterday and wipes away a smudge from the corner of her mouth.

They giggle and flirt and she feeds him a bite, and Su-ha looks down dejectedly at his own clothes: “I should’ve worn something other than my school uniform!” Aw.

Pretty the Paralegal drops a water bottle on Hye-sung’s desk to say that she’ll need it for her next client, who’s a repeat-offender that Lawyer Shin has defended before. He’s a grandpa who stole free newspapers—the catch being that he took a whole stack rather than just one, and this is the sixteenth time he’s done so.

Hye-sung meets him, and soon finds out why the water was needed. He’s so hard of hearing that she has to scream at the top of her lungs just so he’ll hear her, and she screams herself hoarse just to tell him that he needs to settle out of court. He’s stubborn on top of it all, and refuses.

She comes home that night frustrated and exhausted, and Su-ha just smiles and tells her to think at him instead of talking, which makes her day. She suddenly lights up and think-talks at him with animated gestures, as he listens to her case of the day. It’s adorable.

Joon-gook brings back the empty containers from Mom’s birthday food and thanks her sweetly. He catches a bit of her conversation with the neighbor ajumma about Hye-sung dating Kwan-woo on her own after all, and smiles to himself in his creepy killer way.

The phone tracker ajusshi keeps sending Joon-gook spam texts to try and trace his location, but so far he’s not biting. Su-ha urges him to hurry, because he’s running out of time.

Today he walks Hye-sung to work dressed in regular clothes (oh, puppy), and lies to her that it’s plainclothes day at school. She just absentmindedly wonders if there is such a thing.

He stops to take a call and then heads up to her office to drop off her mountain of files, and runs into Kwan-woo in the elevator. Kwan-woo greets him happily, and thanks him for dropping Hye-sung off again, “In this dangerous world.”

Kwan-woo pats him on the shoulder, and Su-ha shoves the hand away: “And why is that something you’re grateful for?” Ha. Kwan-woo takes issue with his word choice (he’s not being totally informal but he’s not being polite either) and asks how old he is.

Su-ha leans in: “I’m younger than you.” Kwan-woo laughs it off and says he was just asking because he has a pretty cousin in high school he could set him up with. Su-ha rolls his eyes: “I have someone I like.”

Kwan-woo: “Who?” Su-ha: “Why do I have to tell you?” Kwan-woo sighs that he’s felt this from the start, but he doesn’t think Su-ha likes him very much. Su-ha totally turns to look him right in the eye and say: “That’s right.” Hee.

Kwan-woo’s pretty quick on the uptake, and Su-ha catches him wondering in his head if it’s because he likes Hye-sung. Su-ha: “Yes.” Omo. It startles Kwan-woo, but Su-ha plays it off like he’s answering his last question, and points out Kwan-woo’s foot that’s stepping on his.

As they get to the office, they hear Hye-sung shout at someone to stop, and they both race down the hall. That ornery grandpa is back, and today he’s armed with a bucket of slop, and threatening to throw it at her.

He screams that she’s a trash lawyer, and tosses the bucket of trash to make his point… and Su-ha swoops in to shield her, falling into the cabinet behind them to break her fall. It was mostly lettuce in the bucket, but I love that he dove like it was a bullet.

The whole office erupts in a frenzy. Kwan-woo freaks out at Gramps, Lawyer Shin tells them not to call the police, and Hye-sung flips her lid once she sees that Su-ha is hurt.

Lawyer Shin takes Grandpa outside to talk him down, and Hye-sung and Su-ha come out just as he’s shouting about what a kind, good person Hye-sung is. She’s not having any of it and tells Lawyer Shin she’ll go by the letter of the law and report him.

Lawyer Shin counters that he’ll do the same then, and report her misconduct in the twin case—being in cahoots with a prosecutor could get her disbarred. She asks if he’s threatening her, but he says they can call it a “negotiation tactic.” She’s so stubborn that she’s about to tell him to go ahead, but thankfully Su-ha is there to step in.

He bows and says he won’t report Grandpa, and she snaps: “But you were hurt!” Aw. He points out that that makes him the victim, so he gets to decide. She stalks off angrily, and he catches up to say he’s genuinely sorry for not taking her side, and that he won’t do it again.

She stops being mad and tells him to go to school, and he just stands there making smiley faces at her until she smiles back. Gah.

The tension in the office starts to take a toll on Pretty the Paralegal, and he just sits at his desk on pins and needles, waiting for someone to erupt. A ringing phone throws the poor guy off his chair, and he delivers the news to Kwan-woo that he’s been assigned to Bucket Grandpa from now on.

Judge Kim and his entourage find Kwan-woo sitting outside the courthouse lost in thought, and he brags to his colleagues that he hand-picked Kwan-woo because he was so upright… as they watch him blow a gasket and kick a trashcan over screaming, “WHY ME?!” And then five seconds later he bends down to pick up all the trash. Ha.

Pretty the Paralegal gets stuck as the conduit between Hye-sung and Lawyer Shin like a child trying to volley a pair of bickering parents, and grabs Kwan-woo in relief when he rescues them all by coming back in with a sunny attitude.

He takes on the case and works tirelessly, taking it all in stride even when the plaintiff greets him with a bucket of cold water. These grandpas sure do like their buckets. Anyway, Kwan-woo is basically awesome and does the thankless thing, which is why he’s great.

Hye-sung complains to Su-ha at home though, thinking it’s disloyal of him when his colleague was attacked by Bucket Grandpa, and asks what Su-ha would do. He’s about to say he’d do the same, but takes it back and decides that he’s loyalty all the way. Heh. Way to kick a suitor when he’s down.

She pops open a bottle for Su-ha (I love the reversal now that he’s injured) and admits that she thought Kwan-woo was a teensy bit cool, but decides she was wrong about him. Su-ha smiles and suggests that maybe her mom’s dream was a premonition about the bucket of trash. If only.

Mom’s more concerned about Hye-sung’s first paycheck this week, and asks if she’s going to put it in her bank account thoughtlessly or bring her cash in person, with respect. Heh.

Hye-sung knows when she’s being bossed, and says she’ll come this weekend. Mom’s plan all along was to use the money to buy Hye-sung a car, and calls Joon-gook to ask him to pick up a few things in preparation for her daughter’s visit. Eeep.

This is what he’s been waiting for. He smiles and then heads out to the street. We see the view from a security camera aimed at Mom’s chicken shop… and watch as he passes by, and then the footage cuts out. Jeepers.

Hye-sung finds Kwan-woo asleep at his desk in the morning, and decides to confront him, and the beginning of her sentence cracks me up: “I wasn’t going to say anything because it seemed petty but…”

She asks if he isn’t mad at what that grandpa did to her and how he belittled all public defenders. His answer is intercut with his defense in court, as he shows the judge how many newspapers it takes for Grandpa to make his rent and eat (because he collects recyclables as his only source of income) and how few people read newspapers nowadays.

He tells Hye-sung that he’s working this hard because he’s mad at what happened to her, and he wants to show the defendant, “That we’re trying to see the world through the same eyes, that we truly understand. And I’m going to win that case, and then I’m going to ask that grandpa to apologize to you. That’s why I’m working this hard.” AW.

As she rides the subway to work with Su-ha the next morning, she thinks back to Kwan-woo’s defense in court, and envisions Grandpa going through the train and collecting thrown away newspapers, and how different things are now that all the passengers are on their smartphones. There isn’t a newspaper in sight, and she murmurs aloud, “He was right. That’s how it must’ve been.”

Su-ha asks what she’s talking about, and catches her thinking that she wants to help Kwan-woo. She quickly covers by saying that she feels bad because it was originally her case, but then thinks—what’s the point in lying when Su-ha can read her mind.

She starts to say: “I realized it recently, but honestly, Kwan-woo…” He cuts her off, not wanting to hear her say the words. “Stop.” He puts his headphones back on and turns away.

A lunch coupon for four gets Hye-sung reluctantly invited along to lunch today. They happen to find Do-yeon and Judge Kim already eating there and decide to make it an awkward party, and talk eventually turns to Grandpa’s case.

It turns into a pissing contest between Hye-sung and Do-yeon, with the food held hostage in the middle via lazy susan. The judge has to break it up just to get his hands on lunch, while Kwan-woo smiles at Hye-sung for sticking up for Grandpa.

Meanwhile, Su-ha comes upon Grandpa in the street and hears him wondering if the pastry stand nearby will sell him just one, because he’s only got 500 won to his name.

So he bounds up to ask Grandpa if he has 500 won, because he’s a few won short of buying a set of buns. Grandpa asks if he’ll share, and Su-ha promises to give him two out of three with a smile. So cute.

Hye-sung and Su-ha unpack the truckload of side dishes that Mom sent over, and she tries on a jacket that she sent. Su-ha: “Pretty.” Hye-sung: “Me?” Su-ha: “No, the jacket.” Heh.

She wallows over Grandpa’s case, sighing that there’s nothing to be done if he won’t try and settle with the newspaper owner. Su-ha says he saw Grandpa today (he tells her it was by coincidence, which I don’t buy) and that Grandpa tried to settle with the owner but got nowhere.

He says the two men are actually distant relatives, which they didn’t know until someone in the extended family passed away and they met at the funeral. But that gives Hye-sung an idea—there’s a loophole concerning criminal charges in cases of theft between relatives, which she might be able to use, with Su-ha’s help.

So he shows up to meet her the next day, and humona—he’s dressed in a suit. I’m gonna need a moment.

Her mouth hangs open as she just blurts syllables, and he reminds her that she was the one who told him to wear one. She says it really must be true that the suit makes the man, and says that she almost swooned. He loves it, but pretends not to care.

She explains that they need to get the newspaper owner to settle, but Su-ha reminds her that Kwan-woo already tried and got a bucket of water in the face. Hye-sung: “That’s why I need this [holds up umbrella, ha] and you.”

Then they sit all close and snuggly to strategize, but mostly they just giggle, while Su-ha steals glances at her. It kills me.

Meanwhile Kwan-woo’s out of ideas, and Grandpa prepares to face jail time. He consoles himself with the thought that at least he won’t have to worry about rent or food, which makes me want to cry.

Hye-sung goes to see the newspaper owner armed with umbrella and mind-reader, and they catch him in lie after lie, from having stormed into Grandpa’s house to threaten him, to placing illegal ads in his paper.

They scare him just enough for him to ask if they’re threatening him, and Hye-sung smirks, “Let’s just call it a negotiation tactic.” Heh.

They strut away with signed settlement in hand, and high-five in an explosion of cheese. She asks if he wants anything like she’s rewarding a puppy, and he says he wants to go to the aquarium because he’s never been. She realizes she’s never gone either, and they make plans to go after Grandpa’s trial.

Grandpa is moments away from being sentenced to a prison term, when Hye-sung storms into the courtroom like white knight, bearing settlement papers and proof of Grandpa’s relationship to the newspaper owner.

Kwan-woo bear-hugs her right then and there, in the middle of the courtroom. She’s so stunned that she doesn’t move a muscle while he finishes the case and gets Grandpa cleared.

He chases her outside, and catches up to her just as Su-ha spots them. He asks for a high-five, and when she complies, he holds on and plants a kiss on her hand. Ack. It’s so sweet, but Su-ha! His heart just hits the ground with a thud.

Kwan-woo: “Let’s date, you and me.” She gets flustered and can’t form words: “No-, wai-, wha-?” He says that he might be smiling, but he’s shaking on the inside, and asks her to hurry up and answer—does she dislike him?

Hye-sung stammers, “No, I like you…” At that, Su-ha turns and walks away, heartbroken.

Sung-bin sees him lying in the field at school. He thinks over all the signs that were there all along—that Hye-sung liked Kwan-woo. He takes out his Good Job Bear, and tosses it away in the grass. No!

Sung-bin picks it up and listens to it, realizing that he does like Hye-sung after all. Augh, the merry-go-round of heartbreak today.

Hye-sung comes out of work and calls Su-ha for the millionth time, but he’s not picking up. But Grandpa is waiting outside and grumps an apology at her, clearly having been sent to do so by Kwan-woo.

She just tells him to call his son already, because he’d be so sad to know how his father is living, but Gramps says that’s exactly why he doesn’t call—because it would break his heart. He turns to go and then comes back to put a little yogurt in her hand before walking away. That’s so sweet.

Joon-gook finally bites and clicks on a text, which starts tracing his phone signal. He returns to the chicken shop where Mom passes over some food she’s made in preparation for Hye-sung’s visit tomorrow.

But he just stares at her in this really detached way, and says he has something to tell her. “It’s quite a long story…” And then we see a wrench in his hand. Ohgodohgod.

Hye-sung calls Mom from the bus stop to tell her about Bucket Grandpa, but Mom’s tone of voice is scaring the crap out of me. She’s saying all the normal responses, but her voice sounds shaky. Like she’s trying to keep from crying.

Hye-sung asks if Mom isn’t hiding something from her, meaning the kind of stuff that Grandpa was keeping from his son for his own good, and Mom says no…

And then we cut to her tied up and bleeding in a corner, with Joon-gook holding a phone to her ear. Nooooooooooo.

She says she’s going to hang up, and Mom calls out to her to say one last thing, while looking up at Joon-gook: “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth—if we lived by that law, then all the people in the world would be blind.”

She says that anyone who’s bad to her is doing so because they’re jealous, and that she shouldn’t hate them. She tells her to pity them instead. Hye-sung just whines, thinking that Mom is taking Do-yeon’s side again.

Mom screams at her to listen: “Promise me—that you won’t waste your life on hating other people.” If she dies, I’m gonna punch something. Mom asks her again to promise, and she does. She finally notices the tone in Mom’s voice and asks if she’s sick, and Mom struggles to hold in her tears. It’s so heartbreaking and terrifying all at once.

She hangs up, and Joon-gook asks if that’s it, reminding her that those were her final words to her daughter. She steels herself and says those were her final words.

He starts to show his agitation, wondering why she didn’t cry for help. Mom asks if he thinks she’s stupid—she can see plainly what he’s trying to do, and won’t be used to lure her daughter. It gets to him, and he asks if she isn’t afraid, knowing what comes next. Mom: “I’m not afraid of you. I pity you.” Damn, I love her nerve.

She says his life spent hating someone must’ve been hell, and he turns it right around on her, saying that her daughter’s life will now be spent that way, hating the man who killed her mother.

Mom smiles at him like a boss: “She won’t live that way. I didn’t raise her to be like you.”

And then she laughs.

Su-ha FIIIIINALLY gets the text from his tracker, and when he reads the location it rings a bell. He runs out to Hye-sung, who’s just arriving home. He asks where her mom lives, and she confirms it’s the same area, right down to the street.

She wonders how he knows where her mom lives, and he says warily, “Because that’s where Min Joon-gook is right now.”

It doesn’t hit her yet what that means. She wonders blankly why he’d be there… And then the house phone rings. No. Please don’t be the police. Please don’t be the police.

Su-ha picks it up. Oh no, why do you have that look on your face?

Hye-sung starts to panic: “What was that call? WHAT WAS THAT CALL?!”

Hye-sung (in voiceover): “I knew it then—that the nightmare my mother had dreamt wasn’t over, but just beginning. And that the nightmare… was worse than I could ever imagine.”

COMMENTS

*huddles in corner, rocks back and forth*

Mom is going to be okay, right? Mom is going to be okay, RIGHT? Ohgodohgod, she’s not going to be okay. Okay, this will sound schizo, but as much as I hate this, I love it. This show is doing everything right in terms of pacing, and stakes, and making us care. Just when we’ve settled into the idea that the killer might spin his wheels like a villain in any other drama, he pulls the rug out from under us. I’m panicked, but it’s great.

I liked the grandpa case even if it was less complex, because it left a lot of room for the love triangle to swing back and forth in this episode. As much as my heart is with Su-ha, I’m excited that Kwan-woo is stepping up as a character and as a romantic rival. He’s doing everything right, and that makes the whole triangle more compelling.

It’s painfully obvious that Su-ha sees the barrier in front of him—Kwan-woo is a man and he’s still stuck in nebulous man-boy-land, and he knows it. And that—the watching her from a distance, knowing that he can’t compete with that—it just pangs my heart in the perfect way. I loved the setup of the hand-kissing scene too, from the fact that they’re both in suits (the gradual progression over the course of the episode from uniform to casual clothes to manly suit was such a great mini arc for Su-ha) but what he’s wearing on the outside doesn’t change things. He’s still playing dress-up, while Kwan-woo gets to confess.

I’m just going to sit in my corner until tomorrow comes. No matter what happens to Mom, I believe that they’d kill her off, so kudos, Show. I’m paralyzed until you tell me what happens. Man, I love that the tension only ever builds in this show. In the great words of Barney Stinson, “People think a good mix should rise and fall. But people are wrong. It should be all rise, baby!”

Yes! First, poor sh! :-( the hand kiss scene, my heart was breaking for him! Second....DO NOT KILL THE BEST MOM IN THE WORLD!!!!!

Interesting, school filming has ended? No more su-ha in school uniforms? ha
The previews for the next episode gave me the impression that there's going to be a time jump but you mentioning that just pretty much proves that.

And if you consider the synopsis..
Su-Ha is going to be teaming up with kwan-woo and hye sung in their cases so there's no way he can juggle that and going to school still.. That's a limit the writer is probably going to have to consider.

SH did mention in this ep that they r studying for exams, so uniform is not required. So after exams, come hi school graduation.

0

good point. maybe that explains why so far everything's pretty much 2012 in the drama?

0

@deedeenoona.

Interesting, hadn't noticed that everything was in 2012..

0

@ilikmangos yup! GF did mention it also in one of the recaps, i think one of last week's episodes. :)

0

Yup, if I remember correctly the camera showed a calendar, and the year was 2012.

0

Yes, that would make a lot of sense. The preview for tomorrow's episode showing Su Ha leaving Hye Sung at the aquarium would be a good segue to a time jump.

I could do with a time jump. I like how things have been moving along and I want them to keep it up.

The thought's occurred to me that the Jin-gook Arc might actually not go until episode 16 (I mean, what, are they going to go all slasher film on us or something?), and the time jump - at least a year, since it's 2012 in this drama - is to allow for university/jailtime/Hye-sung to be a decent lawyer without the mindreading sidekick, in some form or another. And as someone pointed out, the sypnosis did say Su-ha was going to team up with BOTH public defenders... althought having just finished GFB I'm gonna take anything a sypnosis says thought with a large pinch of salt from now on.

0

@Nanaki:

I'm dying to see how Su-ha gets over his jealousy to help Kwan-woo. Show, no more heartbroken Su-ha please, my heart can't take it! ;n;

Haha, I totally get your point. GFB's ending killed the show for me. I was watching it mainly for Sung Joon (oh, the pretty! <3) and to see how Kang-chi avoided letting his fear get the better of him (as per what Wol-ryung told him), but noooooo, the writer just had to ruin what was already a mediocre show for me. *sighs*

0

@haruko - PLEASE LET THERE BE A TIME JUMP. (after we resolve the whole DID HE KILL MOM question!)

I really want SuHa to have an actual shot at winning HyeSung's heart. Lord knows from the Hong Sister's Big how uncomfies Koreans can get over a high school boy/30-something woman romance.

My heart's really tearing in 2. This is the first time since Best Love that I shipped both lead's in earnest. And, what's more, it's never felt this intense before. I really want her to be with both, to the point where I have this terrible horrible hope that she hooks up with one, he dies, and she ends up with the other dude. That way she gets to be with both and the dead guy gets to die a noble, honorable death protecting her from Sociopath Min Joon Gook.

@deedeenoona -- wow, incredible catch!

I'm also really hoping that something Hye Sung did lead to the horrible death of Min Joon Gook's family, hence his crazy vendetta against a teenager who testified against a guy who killed a 6 year old's father in front of him.

Why?

Because it wouldn't be satisfying for Min Joon Gook to be Crazy Killer Guy w/ a chip on his shoulder. His back story BETTER pay off. ::makes a fist:: Writers, I have faith in you!

@Kristine -- not sure if we're allowed to discuss previews here, but what I do appreciate is that it's cut in a way that we still don't know 100% sure what exactly happened with The Moms.

Heart Clutching Moments:
* When SuHa showed up in a suit and tries to play off that he doesn't care that she got momentarily swoony.
* Cha Byun's Big Moment In Court and his heart to heart w/ Hye Sung in regards to his anger
* SuHa pooling his moneys together with grandpa to get him the egg bread without having to put his pride on the line for it
* Cha Byun kissing the back of Hye Sung's hand so incredibly tenderly before making his earnest, nerve wracking confession
***IN FRONT OF SUHA.
* Min Joon Gook showing up with a wrench
* Mommy begging Hye Sung not to waste her life hating people.
* Mommy telling MJG to basically screw himself, her daughter's not gonna end up a frakked up person like him
* SuHa realizing MJG is by HS's Mommy's chicken house.
* SuHa-picking-up-the-phone-cliffhanger

Too much. This episode was too much. I'm so glad that it's only episode 7. I CAN'T WAIT TIL TOMORROW. No, seriously, I'm Googling around for wormholes so that I may watch eppy 8 already.

Does anyone have any idea what the tapping of her high heels might signify or be related to?

I think she has done that before but this time itt was such a big sustained gesture I wonder what it was about.

Oh yes I'm also wondering about that little detail. Anyone?

0

@yumi -- for me, I thought it was the director's symbolic allusion to what Min Joon Gook was doing to The Moms in an attempt to create some tension and unease within the viewer, ie, while Hye Sung is carrying on like all is well with the world, The Moms on the other side is being struck by the wrench in the manner that Hye Sung is striking the bottom of her shoe against the bench.

It's a way of communicating violence without having to directly show it.

Shows and films sometimes do this for either artistic reasons or due to rules laid out by, say, the FCC (in America), wherein which network television can only show a certain level of graphic violence.

Think about a scene in a television show when a man raises his hand to strike his wife and then it cuts to a shot of a kid smacking some ants on a sidewalk with a newspaper.

For IHYV, I can only guess that that was what it was trying to do! It worked on me! But maybe they could have executed it better, since it created some confusion.

P.S. I wonder if there's going to be some kind of case with one of Suha's friends again before the possible. They took the time to point how that he might have astigmatism/couldn't see SuHa on the field.

1

Wow, i also wondered about that. I keptthinking...is this like a superstition in Korea?

0

I half-wondered if she had a stiletto hidden in it (a stiletto in a stiletto, see?), or some kind of Chekhov's gun otherwise. I mean, it HAS to be, it was such a deliberate, prolonged shot.

0

No, seriously, I’m Googling around for wormholes so that I may watch eppy 8 already. LOL. You and me both. :)

All evil moms and especially mother in laws since the beginning of drama time should be sacrificed for this mom.

I'm going to put my money on it being a flashback, that mom will be with us for many more eps. At least that's my hope.

Why Kill her? to adhere to Aristotle criteria for the most effective tragic plot.

Such a course [the failure of worthless people] might indeed play upon our humane feelings, but it would not arouse either pity or fear [his criteria for tragedy]; for our pity is awakened by undeserved misfortune, and our fear by that of someone just like ourselves--pity for the undeserving sufferer and fear for the man like ourselves--so that the situation in question would have nothing in it either pitiful or fearful. True...but I think this show is pulling off the dark storyline mixed with RomCom far better than others. If Mom dies I can't believe how horrible that would be -- basically it's saying -- well not saying but the guilt on hye-sung would be incredible. Just because she testified against a murderer who was about to kill another person in cold blood, she has to be threatened and then have her own mother killed as well? Hopefully the killer is just trying to use Mom as bait to get Hye Sung there but somehow Soo Ha and Hye Sung figure out some great plan to rescue Mom and put killer in jail for the rest of his life and beyond.

Loved the episode, loved the recap.

Lee Bo-Young has gone from one great role (Seo-Young) to another (Hye-Sung). Lucky [well prepared] actor.

Kim Hae-Suk is just amazing as Hye-Sung's mother. Of course she is a goner--the only decent mother in k-drama right now so she can't be long for this k-drama world.

Love this--Hye-sung tells Su-ha about her mom’s series of dream premonitions and how they always come true. He doesn’t believe in that stuff, and calls it all coincidence.--because of course reading minds is normal and clairvoyance is not.

The rapport between Hye-sung and Su-Ha was amazing in this episode. I love seeing the way they care for and take care of each other without making a fuss, as if it were meant to be.

Kwan Joo must be the most publicly expressive man on K-drama. Most couples date for 16 episode before they dare touch in private, much less in public. I think that bear hug he gave Hye-Sung in court will put him on Deo-Yeon's radar and activate her second lead status.

Kwan-Joo is decency personified. His diligence is so sweet, and I love thinking that he utilizes what he learned as a police man in the way he practices law.

I loved watching Kwan-Joo's interactions with Su-ha.

I feel like Min Joo-Kook will fake his own death and cause Su-ha to be convicted on circumstantial and planted evidence.

I've been refreshing like mad for the recaps.. OMG! Now I can't wait for the next episode. I almost cried when I saw the blood on Hye-sung's mom's face.. And she still had the guts to laugh in the killer's face even though she knew he was going to kill her. She wins Best Mom of all time.. hands down!

And Su-Ha.. I'm in denial. He's going to get the girl in the end right? RIGHT? Well.. time skip means there's still a chance that could happen. But they could have done it without making Hye-Sung an orphan :'(

0

Required fields are marked *

It's episode 7... her romance with Dorky Lawyer is totally happening, which is much too early in typical drama narratives to be the final pairing.

So I think Su-ha stands a good chance, he just needs to graduate and mature so that Hye-sung actually starts seeing him not as the man-boy but that the man.

I really hope that's the way it's going to be! I think we're good in terms of the story arch, everything girlfriday said is very true – Su-ha is in that no-man's land at the moment, he can't compete with Kwan-woo at the moment, but he does have an amazing rapport with Hye-sung already and they obviously care for each other deeply already.

Kwan-soo is all wonderful (his approach to the grandpa case was very sweet), but I'm cheering Su-ha all the way. Even if both Kwan-soo and Su-ha would be good matches for Hye-sung. But I guess we could argue that Su-ha and Hye-sung are connected by fate? (Wahhhh... I never say these kind of things... but I need an argument why they will end up together!)

I worry about the timing though. Yes their relationship is happening early but mom's death is most likely going to put a hamper on the romance. I don't know how much we can trust our romance rule-book for this. Plus given how little I expected Show to be able to kill the mom, who knows what they'll do? (I must be schizo too, I love what the Show is doing plot-wise because it's painful in the right way)

I really hope its SH-HS in the end. To be the honest, although KW is fine (I'm actually starting to like him), I can't see any chemistry between him and HS. Like their romance is fine on paper, but on-screen, it has no sparks. And I'm not saying this b/c I'm on a different ship...I usually give credit to chemistry even if the person's the second lead.

It's definitely to say.... although K dramas seem to stick more closely to these "rules" than J ones. We'll see what happens with the mom, the killing is unexpected since they normally don't go all the way (think School 2013 and 'almost' suicide).

'Like their romance is fine on paper, but on-screen, it has no sparks'
- this. You totally put a finger on that feeling. The reason HS-SH is so much more compelling is because it feels so much realer (is that a word? XD). With Kwan-woo, I really like HIM, but as for the romance, I'm not feeling it. It is more like he's the crush, and Su-ha is the real deal.

Oh my word so much from this episode!

I literally just finished watching so first and foremost I am left reeling for Mom! Please oh please, watching her with Min Joon Kook being the most awesome mom and person was alternately awe inspiring and terrifying. I'm not even kidding when I say that I was crying and cringing and cheering all at once. Literally jumped when he was walking towards her menacingly *shudders* GF has it right, regardless of the outcome I believe she really COULD be killed by him.

Ok, breathe. Got that out of my system. There were a lot of great moments in this one, and far be it from me not to admit that I"m wrong: Kwan Woo really stepped it up in not only the call Hye Sung out when she's wrong area, but really lived up to his words. Man, he is the epitome of actions speaking louder than words to me right now. Plus, how great was it to see him genuinely frustrated and challenged and then just come back stronger?

On the converse, poor Soo Ha...you could really see that the situation between KW/HS is taking its toll. He's now trying to be opposite of KW while she seemed frustrated with him and lost some of his own ability to call her out and go along with what she wants. I know this isn't really him and I have faith that he's going to come back strong as well, but so heartbreaking in the mean time.

Finally, just have to say, when she saw him in the suit and said (per Viki translation) "I almost fell for you," oh my goodness, I was like don't mess with his (and my) heart! And my favorite moment of the episode, their think-talk conversation. So stinkin' cute!

girlfriday, I look forward to your recaps as much as the show itself, especially for this one! So thank you for always being timely and spot-on with your insightful comments.

Almost halfway through, and the show is consistent in giving equal parts comedy, romance, and suspense. The stellar cast elevates this show even more, with their superb acting and great chemistry: Su Ha and Hye-sung's chemistry is so palpable, we can watch them all day interact without speaking. But Lawyer Cha is also becoming emboldened, good for him! Mother is the best K-drama mom, regardless if they kill her off or not, she's already made such an impact on this show. Even the villain is so creepy in a three-dimensional way, rather than a one-dimensional caricature.

LOVE IT. I will hold out hope it will stay like this until the finale, and that Lee Jong Suk will finally get the girl in the end!

I am very sad about the Mom. It is terrible when they make us love someone like that and then kill them off. Sigh... I feel terrible. But the preview made me feel worse. It almost appears like lawyer Cha has to defend him and that clearly wont help any budding romance though I was not really feeling the romance. It also appeared Su Ha is saying good bye (though I know it won't be). I can imagine how it would be like for our lead.. Mom gone, romantic interest is supposed to defend the murderer and the person she feels closest to is saying good bye... All this is speculation based on preview but I do feel like "huddling in the corner and rocking back and forth". Thank you for the recaps. Glad I found you.

Dammit, I knew something was wrong with Mom. Her voice sounded way too calm on the phone. When Su Ha was confirming the chicken shop's address with Hye Sung, I was screaming, "Let's go! Let's run! No time for talking!" Is it the hospital or police on the other line? At least this cliffhanger was in an odd-numbered episode, so we won't have to wait a week to find out what happens.

I find it unrealistic how fast Hye Sung and Kwan Woo's feelings are developing for each other. I'm still not onboard that ship. While everything between Su Ha and Hye Sung this episode was cute, cute, and more cute. Their silent conversation to save her hoarse voice -- cute. Their roles reversed in opening bottles -- so cute. Their strategizing while sitting thisclose with him in a hot suit -- so, so cute. Mama still doesn't know her daughter is living with a boy? However, I'm rather disappointed how Hye Sung is not a competent lawyer without Su Ha running interference. She needs to learn how not to depend on him to solve her cases, and that may only happen when he leaves her.

Thanks for the recap, girlfriday!

Watching this show is akin to self torture, in a good(?) way. You hate the baiting with the thrill and tenterhooks, but yet come for more of it having now been hook to the line.

How the villain gets all the upperhand irritates to no ends, especially how he only got 10 years for murder(they gave him manslaughter?) and how there's no tagging (parole?) or any witness protection. To kill off Mum will not bring any closure for me later on other than he be tortured and killed off by her daughter or Su Ha. And Su Ha is no match for him, no matter the esp he has.

Romance wise, I'm on Kwan-woo's side, though I much prefer less romance and more cases and plots in this show.

The parole thing bugs me too. But I'm not really sure how parole works. Do they just leave the person-on-parole alone until he is sent to the police again for doing something wicked? Or do they actively track him, from where he lives to what he does everyday? Although the latter option would be ideal, the former seems to be more realistic, especially if the number of newly released criminals is high... And if we are to go by the standard of Korean cops shown in this show alone... The former is definitely what happens. -_-lll

It just occurred to me that these could all have been prevented if HyeSung had just gone to visit her mother (with SuHa in tow of course) and called the police earlier. Therefore, the takeaway from this episode is: VISIT YOUR MOTHERS PEOPLE. and THE POLICE NEED TO STEP UP THEIR GAME.

"Watching this show is akin to self torture, in a good way."
Can I quote you omg this is such an apt description of how I feel right now.
My brain's telling me to root for Kwan-woo. I can see why he's good for Hye-sung (He's such a earnest and good-natured lawyer that you can't help but to root for) but my heart says Su-ha all the way. I'd be fine with either way 'cause both guys are good for Hye-sung in their own ways (which is a first for me since I usually only root for one pairing in a show).
I really loved the harabuji plot in this show. I'm a sucker for healtfelt stories especially when it involves grandpas and grandmas living under pityful conditions. I JUST CANNOT STAY AWAY FROM THOSE.
So I really loved how Kwan-woo defended the harabuji in the court (In fact, I really loved most of the speeches that he's put up, because they were insightful and profound, which allows us to take a look from the defendant''s perspective).
THIS SHOW, IT BREAKS OUR HEART IN A GOOD WAY.

I posted this before but it seems to have disappeared.

-Our villain is psychopathiclly smart.
-he want to punish Hye-Sung by stripping her everyone she loves.
-murder mother-one body blow.
-Joon-Gook thinks Hye-Sung is in love with Lawyer Cha.
-Lawyer Cha is passionate about getting justice for underdogs.
-present himself as an underdog victimize by Su-ha, get Lawyer Cha to defend him stripping Hye-Sung of someone else she loves
- Accuse Suha, removing him from Hye-Sung's side
-Leaving her alone and isolated, then terrorize and kill her.

I think the is a reason the drama has set up Lawyer Cha as a hard working 'pure' straight arrow versus Hye-Sung who is willing to cut corners. That aspect of his character will be put to a test when he defends Joon-Gook.

yeah that was exactly what i was thinking too. that's why i had this thought of lawyer cha becoming shaken between his lover and "justice" for his client. it'll be one heck of a twist if lawyer cha turns his back - which can be possible.

For the kwan woo and hye sung relationship im glad that they are together, but im sad for su ha. If stupid jong gook didnt kidnap hye sung's mom this would have been a great episode for me. Cant wait for episode 8

BUT, BUT, I have to agree with you, GF. This is an awesome twist. Brilliantly done.

THE PREVIEW. Omg. This is actually the first time I saw a preview because I just NEEDED to know.

OMG, SU HA. :'( But I am SO sure, I just KNOW that he and Hye Sueng are going to end up together in the end. Some of the parts in this drama are so similar to Dream High.

And isn't it a Drama Golden rule that the heroine usually never ends up with the guy she falls for first. Like in Dream High.

PLEASE, show. Su Ha and Hye Sueng.

If there's a time jump, it would be an intentional plot point so that the OTP is more acceptable (especially to the ahjumma and ahjussi viewers who commands the tv remotes), i.e. no longer school boy jail bait. Will be quite a cop out in my opinion, and easy conclusion that Su Ha will get the girl in the end.

Seriously the love triangle and noona romance really cannot compete with the real meat of the storyline with the killer and the mom. The killer storyline blows everything out of the window for me. It's seriously frightening and good at the same time. I guess they didn't decide to draw out the "niceness" Min Joon Guk for much longer. As much as I like little dragging as possible, a part of me wished they did drag it on a bit longer because I don't know if my heart can take it if Hyesung's mom or any other mom in pain/danger.

It heartbreaking but also so strong of Hyesung's mom and her final words. So wise and resilient, even until the end.

For me this episode with the new client case of the grandpa was a bit slow for me and I did find myself a bit bored. Min Joon Guk really brought me back to the drama and keeps me invested as odd as that sounds.

Still need to comment on his eyes, Lawyer Cha why so sparkly???

Ugh can we just have her in coma or something? I don't want her to die.......

It's sad for Su Ha that he can't compete.. And the fact that he knows it is more heartbreaking! I'm all for a time jump, but I don't see how it'll be in the story. Another go around of Min Joon Gook out of jail is not fun at all. I trust the show won't do that (hopefully).

This episode had a lot going on in gelling the relationship between HS and SH despite it seeming to be about the grandpa case and set up for the Oma in distress with baddie and the wrench. The wrench was pretty blatant lol.

HS and SH have settled in very well together, and are very much in couple mode whether she realizes it or not; she's going home with him and is telling him about her day in the midst of domesticity.

I totally was waiting for ZZ Top to start playing in the background when SH busted out that totally fly suit.

I'm a little concerned that there has been little development on the mean girl/mean girls family/Hye Sung storyline. I mean really, the less I see of mean girls in dramas, I'm happy, but we need to see some movement on that plot bunny within the next two episodes or we could be looking at a hot mess of tying it up in the home stretch on this drama.

As much as I am enjoying the Hye Sung/Su Ha thing and the actors chemistry, I have to admit I'm not sure where this drama is going. Obviously a big theme is not letting bad things in life define you/not living life as a victim. So far Nerd Lawyer has not had a lot of screen time, and little character development, so really, how important is he? We are 7 episodes deep in a 16 episode show, and we do not know him very well. This episode shows he's way more intuitive and has reasons for his behavior he doesn't show to the world ...maybe? I mean I'm not down with that taking off your glasses and changing your socks makes you more cool and smarter and socially adept. That only works for Johnny Depp and Superman. I'm concerned about how the show is going to arc...are we going to get caught up in redeeming the baddie and the mean girl for the rest of the run and the cases and the love triangle bit and/or the HS/SH relationship will get lost in the shuffle? Yes, I know, all speculation. I do not mind a drama giving me something else to think about, I just don't want it derail or bog down when it's been rather charming.

Should not have read this at work. I've still got half the day before I can watch this (and freak out all over again). Why do you kill off all the good parents, WHY?! Mum's such a hero. I don't think many people could manage to be that strong in that situation.

Anyone think Joon-guk might have gotten pissed that Mum didn't bite so he's ringing Su-ha to manipulate some more agony out of them? And hasn't killed Mum yet? ARGH.

Gosh so GOOD. I was so sure Mom was a dead woman. And it's nice that we think her premonition was about Hyesung directly, but nooo

Su-ha on the other hand killed ME. We got happy, giddy, heartbroken, snarky all in one episode. The eye roll in the elevator was priceless, okay. And his face listening to Hyesung think-talk...like it's the happiest he's ever felt since he got his special gift.

Was I the only one who was worried during the scene where Sung-bin saw Su-ha from far and her classmate asked "you can see that?" and then he repeated the same thing to the other guy who came in? This drama does have a supernatural element so I got me thinking a little bit but maybe I'm just being paranoid over nothing and looking too much into a small detail.

Since two characters could see Su-ha [ans Su-ha was there] and one couldn't I'm assume the non-seer has bad eyesight.

It might be a set-up for him being a witness in court and his eye-witness testimony being thrown out.

That's what I think too! At first I thought it was just a little detail to emphasize SB's big crush on SH that she'd recognize him in a heartbeat but then it got weird when bad eyesight boy was still on the screen after SB ran off and he repeated the same thing to the other guy. Now my question is, what is he going to witness?

Thank you for the recaps! I always do the streaming and then read your recaps :)

I have to say that this episode kills me enough, ever since from the preview shows up.

I always love Sooha and Hyesung's interactions, of course. The telepathy conversation really rings on me because it is so touching and shows how great Sooha's attention for Hyesung. All this time, Sooha is always the one who stay beside Hyesung through the good and the bad, while Hyesung at first only attracted by Gwanwoo's appearance, even she falls for his personality more now.

When I read the comments of the preview video on SBS youtube, there are a lot of people who said that they won't watch again if Sooha doesn't end up with Hyesung. And so do I! LOL

I really wish mom won't die, because she doesn't do anything wrong :(

Oh, and I really love Sooha in suit (I have to admit that I did scream when he came out like that). And I'm happy he gets to go to the aquarium (finally) with Hyesung in the later episode. I think it will be a date, seeing (in the preview) how Hyesung and Sooha dressed up. I just hope Hyesung will understand Sooha's feelings soon

This show did a total 180 from being super happy to being super creepy and scary. Not mam Jjang! I love her!

I will admit this show is getting really annoying to watch with everyone fighting over who they want Hye Sung to end up with; there's nothing wrong with shipping, but please don't over do it, it's just a show. I had to turn the comments off on viki and I love the viki comments.

I really enjoyed this episode, but sometimes I feel like this drama jumps up and down and sometimes all over the place. Lee Jong Seok is too cute for words, and I love him for it. I love Oska too and Lee Bo Young. The evil guy is doing a superb job! Looking forward to tomorrow and hoping Mama Jjang will still be with us until the end.

I'm surprised this is only a 16 episode drama!

16 is usually the best number. Else they usually will do lots of flashbacks and filler plots just to fill it up to 20 and beyond. Unless it's weekends or dailies where the makjang can go 100 plus.

Im actually rather surprised we're already at the halfway mark for this show, and it still feels like we've just started a new journey with our characters. In this case, for Voice, 16 is perfect (that's hoping it doesn't run out of steam or the writer doesn't have writers block or take a whiff of whatever GFB's writer was on for the finale)

It completely slipped my mind that we were half-way through the show while watching. Their pacing is amazing so far. And yeah, I think 16 is the right number too. I hope the ratings don't cause them to extend unnecessarily. I'd rather have fewer but tight episodes than more but draggy episodes.

(p.s. ilikemangos, you're watching heartless city too, right? Is it 16 episodes? It surprised me that we were already at the end of 10.)

There's 20 episodes for cruel city so we're also at the halfway mark!

Oh yes i agree.
i think mainly all that fighting between who hye sung will end up with is because as of now the OTP could end up going either way. It's still a big question mark and who really gets the girl is not clearly defined compared to typical k-dramas.
I find viki comments to really add the experience -- be it funny, cute, or heartfelt. But i do agree with you that there's ALOT of fighting going on with the shipping -- to the point where people were bashing kwan-woo. that's where i was like haaales nah. Not my baby! And this is from someone who thinks su-ha is more compatible with hye sung. How can you hate or be biased with such a charming guy?! He's not even your typical boring nice second lead.

Agree with you on Kwan-woo! I'm shipping Su-ha/ Hye-sung 100%, but Kwan-woo is an interesting second lead, one that is worthwhile. He's not boring. He's not annoying. He is definitely suited to Hye-Sung.

I'm not a fan of love triangles, but at least this one has got something substantial to it! It makes a lot of sense why Hye-sung would be interested in Kwan-soo, but not Su-ha at this point, even if on an emotional level she's so much more intimate with Su-ha already. Su-ha's heartbreak is gut-wrenching, but necessary and will make it all the more worth it in the end.

I agree about the "shipping" issue.
I knew that people would be passionate about their OTP but was pretty surprised to see all the insults hurled at Oska on viki. Soured my experience too. :(

I absolutely love su-ha with HS, but Oska is great too! For once, he's not just that typical 2nd lead that just stands there for the girl and looks pretty and mopey all the time- at least he's proactive and upfront about his intentions!

Plus, I'm pretty sure Su-ha is the end game. We all know the deal with 1st and 2nd leads in the drama world. ;)

I could have sworn that it was Su Ha who jumped into the water in mom's dream mainly based on the hair and the outfit (looked like Su Ha's uniform) whoever jumped in was wearing. But now I think about it, maybe the frame wasn't totally right for it to be Su Ha. Hmm, now I wonder.

IDK. People keep saying it is ok and have nothing wrong between SH and HS couple being together... that his age is no problem. But then they end saying ''A time skip and he'll be legal and they can be together'' so, they being together is a problem for you. You can't accept 17 old (19 korean age) guy with an 28 old woman together, not without wishing for a time skip.

I don't think they fit, I prefer them as cute siblings solving crimes.... SH will get over his crush soon...

and everyone is happy :)

or this or, don't give any time skip, if people wan to ship it and you want to force us to accept them as a couple, end without time skips please, have the guts at least.

Well, an age difference of 10+ years can mean a lot and also mean very little depending on the age of the people involved.

Imagine:

1) A 7 year old kid and a 17 year old teenager. The 10 years in between them DOES mean a lot, since one is barely starting school and the other is already almost finishing high school.

2) A 17 year old kid and a 27 year old working adult. Again, the 10 years difference in experience is significant, given that one is still cocooned in his protective bubble of studenthood and the other is already out there in the dog eat dog world.

3) A 21 year old working adult and a 31 year old working adult. Now here's the thing. Both are working so they both have the same experiences more or less, meaning that they (hopefully) have more or less the same sense of maturity.

Most people's deal with huge age-gap couples is that the older one will have more experience in life and will usually have more power, leading to the older one potentially 'bullying' the more naive, defenseless, powerless younger one. In essence, they think that the power-balance will not be there, since both sides are very different in maturity and this is especially significant in cases 1 and 2 mentioned above.

However, if both sides are able to defend themselves, keep each other in check, know how to stand up for their rights and whatever, then what is age? Age will mean nothing then because they are both on the same level playing ground and both are able to think rationally (usually).

And that is why most people prefer that SuHa grow up more so that he can become more mature after having been exposed to the outside world before starting a relationship with HyeSung. Look at him right now, just episodes ago, he didn't understand what HyeSung meant by asking him not to kill and was prepared to throw his whole life away to kill Min JoonGuk. What adult does that?? (Don't talk to me about Melodramas. They are just whack.)

Relationships are usually less age-compatibility and are usually more maturity-compatibility. And the minds of students are usually less mature (because they are still developing) than the minds of adults.

I am not saying that HyeSung and SuHa cannot simply be self-made siblings. I'm just explaining why people can ship the SH-HS couple while wanting SH to become legal first. I mean, after all, we can't have one half of the couple entering jail for succumbing to jail-bait.

I think it's quite easy to ship them two given that SH is generally more mature than others his age and HS is (on the other hand) immature. See, maturity levels match. Also, SH is cute. *shrugs*

And add to that, if it's 31 and 41 the age difference has become meaningless.

But hey, I'm saying that as someone whose grandparents were 10 years apart (my grandma being the older one) and one of my good friends is happily married to a guy ~10 years older than her.

Agree.
We are asking Su-Ha to become older not so much because of the legal aspect but based more on maturity(That's my thought, anyhow). He's still in school so you expect someone with the lack of experience in life is not yet mature enough to be with a woman who's already a public defender and a lawyer for many years. But you could also argue that Su-Ha is actually more mature than Hye Sung is because he was stripped of his childhood and his father, and had to live by himself all the while hearing the thoughts and voices around him -- that warrants alot of insight and maturity i think.
I think people need to give more credit to su-ha instead of looking at his age and as a kid in a school uniform. That's just my 2 cents though...
